In my opinion, one of the things that set Super Megaforce up for total failure is the fact that it was Super Megaforce instead of its own season with a new team. Going from Megaforce's more general power set from Goseiger to the heavily pirate-themed Gokaiger made no damn sense. Them going from having their standard Ranger form, Ultra form, now a "Super Mega" mode, AND "Legendary Ranger" mode was just ridiculous. They would have been far better off just making it its own separate season.
And yeah, the writing is absolute garbage tier across all of Megaforce. Which is a shame, because I feel like the actors could have done better with material that didn't suck.

  • @jamesmcdavid1673
    @jamesmcdavid1673 2 года назад +824

    Yeah, Megaforce sucked big time.
Know what didn't suck? One of the shows that it's based on, Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger. It starts with all of the previous Super Sentai joining forces to fight off the Zangyack Empire before sacrificing their powers to repel Zangyack from Earth. The Gokaigers would eventually collect the Ranger Keys that the Sentai Powers were turned into, allowing them to transform into their predecessors, but to gain the ability to use the true power of the previous teams, they had to earn the approval of said teams.
Who are the Gokaigers? Five Space Pirates on a quest for the Greatest Treasure in the universe. They honestly didn't care about protecting Earth at first, but they didn't like the Zangyack, and their rule as pirates was that if they saw something they didn't like, they'd smash it. Eventually, those five would learn why their predecessors fought so hard to protect Earth.

That's why I dislike Super Megaforce the most, out of any PR season. Gokaiger was a great Super Sentai season (probably my favorite season ever).
It had a great cast of characters, the plot (while straightforward as most Sentai seasons are) made for great character development, the action scenes were hype, and the music was phenomenal (especially Gokaioh's theme). Super Megaforce ruined all of that.
It didn't have the fiery spirit that Gokaiger did, especially since you had so many Ranger actors not to return to the series for the season - while with Gokaiger, each moment a veteran Ranger was called for, that actor showed up.
Point is, Gokaiger while an anniversary season, has a lot going for it.

What makes Megaforce even more disappointing is the fact they ruined Gokaiger. I know you say you don't watch the sentai, but they took a Top 5 placer for the Sentai and dropped it down to bottom 5 for Power Rangers. Gokaiger introduced the same gimmick of transforming into all previous rangers, but they also had episodes dedicated to meeting, fighting with, protecting, or learning from those previous teams, and did them every 2 or 3 episodes throughout the season. Megaforce did 3 (the Jungle Fury Casey episode, which is almost one to one, then the WIld Force and RPM ones, that were zord only meet-ups)
But the main point I want to make is that Gokaiger had enough of its own thing that it would be good to great without the past powers gimmick. If you removed it from Megaforce though, there would be NOTHING left.

    • @mikedavies6979
      @mikedavies6979 2 года назад +5

That was along the lines of what I tried to say when I mentioned the cameo by Casey from Jungle Fury in my comment.
It was nice to not only see a student ascend to a master so long after we last saw him, but getting to see Casey exercise that wisdom and experience to teach these rangers without them ever knowing who he is until the end...
It gives the characters more development and plays on Nostalgia in just the right way, the problem comes when they only exist for an episode or two and don't carry those lessons for the series, as they never truly evolve and develop as characters because of this.

    • @PissedGrunty

@@mikedavies6979 The Casey episode was probably my favorite out of the season, but it was pretty much an exact copy of the Sentai episode with Geki Red. With that being said... you get what I mean though, using Nostalgia to amplify what is there and not completely outshine it as did in most every other episode... even the big ranger battle doesn't help because all they are doing is showing things we actually want to see and then reverting back to the dumpster fire bargain bucket downgrade that is Megaforce.

Linkara has a great breakdown of why Megaforce blows.
It essentially boils down to: a fan of the sentai in charge, a Japanese director from the sentai, poor oversight on Saban's part, and a lack of command in charge that left getting the Veteran actors back until the last month...
From what Linkara goes into, it sounds like SMF was ment to be Saban's big callback to its 20 years of Power Rangers; but instead turned into a disappointment for fans and Saban, resulting in Haim actually getting involved to salvage the next season... which might be why Dino and Ninja (or was it the other way round?) Seemed more like a love letter to Power Rangers, then MF and SMF ever were...

It made sense how he was a normal kid and wanted to use his intelligence to help the power rangers and ended up becoming one by accidentally discovering their secret by checking on rocky. The character was annoying and weird at times but also kind of great for what he’s supposed to be. Also made a lot of sense why he stayed on earth instead of going to space. IMO, Turbo is really overhated. Now I’m not saying it’s a great season, but I feel like it’s not as bad as people make it out to be. Turbo at least had a lot going for such as the 2nd half being decent, the 2nd team had development from T.J to Cassie, some episodes are actually fun, the introduction of the Phantom Ranger, and of course, the finale that really had raising the stakes. I would rather prefer watching the entirety of Turbo than Super Megaforce and Super Ninja Steel.

I honestly lost interest into mega force and super mega force seasons. Having the idea of using the ability to change into legendary rangers was an agreeable idea but your right that the way the show was set out just made it not any good. When I started watching turbo i had myself very confused from the first episode and ( I could be wrong) the most part of the episode must’ve taken place after the film “ Turbo a Power rangers movie”. I only thought about that because there were some cuts from the film that has been put in there.

I'd actually say that Turbo improved with the cast change. It was abrupt and poorly handled for sure but Turbo felt so weird in its first half with Tommy's sudden interest in cars and the brighter highschool vibe but they were graduating?
The first half of Turbo could't figure out how to naturally build the characters. Second Half was just bland but it gave us hints at characters that became much better in Space.

@@robertrogers074 Nothing inherently, it's how it was handled. Turbo already had a number of sudden plot shifts, so they're powered by cars and Tommy is suddenly interested in cars? The show never explains its sudden interest in racing or cars.
What we needed was a scene where Tommy wonders about what he'll do after highschool and sees people working at a garage so he starts working part time. Then you have a coworker bring up racing and the problem is fixed.
Bulk and Skull had a segway when they stopped being bullies and started being Jr Police. They talk about girls liking uniforms they see a program they sign up and the arc just flows.
Without establishing these things it reveals the artifical nature of the story. Tommy can be anything or have any interest at any point but the idea is that he's the character we've known for years. Dino Thunder can at least explain archeology as something that happened offscreen. Turbo hard cuts into Tommy's new interest the way it throws the Turbo powers at the viewers without explaining why Zeo isn't enough.
The new cast was nice BECAUSE it forced them to reintroduce things and clearly the writers learned as Turbo segways itself into Power Rangers In Space.
Can you imagine if Turbo ended without Divatox winning or them losing their powers and the next season just starts with them suddenly needing to be in Space and TJ starts building model Rockets? It'd just be strange.

I'll always defend Operation Overdrive. Whilst it's not the best show nor has the same impact as Dino Thunder, or even the original series, I think it had some good moments sprinkled in. I'd say its biggest flaw was how overcrowded the narrative was. Having to contend with four villain factions, whilst juggling who'll be the threat in each episode, and on top of that, shoving in these artifacts at the same time always was gonna wind up being a difficult task. I have a soft spot for the Fearcats, Kamdor and Moltor. Though, I could care less about the inclusion of Thrax, Miratrix and Flurious. (Wasted potential, if you ask me. Though, Flurious also went toe-to-toe with the rangers at the end, and I find his relationship with Norg funny. ) The Megazords this season were cool, and whilst the rangers were underdeveloped at best, I also think the team were still compelling. Tyzonn, in particular, had an amazing arc that mirrored Doggie's, and I loved watching him go from a stoic loner in search of the Fearcats to avenge his fallen people, to an active member of the team who could finally be happy again. Whilst Will, Ronny and Dax feel underwhelming, I'd say they had their moments too, especially Will. (Controversy aside.) The designs of the villains and monsters being based off old megazords was neat too.
I thought the lineup for Once a Ranger was still a worthy lineup. Even if it didn't include Jack, or anyone else that could've easily taken a spot. The music this season was also quite good. I liked how melancholic Tyzonn's theme started out, to how victorious it became overtime, especially when he destroys Crazar once and for all.
I even think the theme song is bareable. I've always had a soft spot for bad rap though. Even if the show wasn't all that good, at least it wasn't Megaforce.

The could have made Amal red zordon somehow, allowing his sport to return and collect all the powers with the pirate rangers and use them to finish of the second invasion, and getting zedd and Rita or past villains involved like super sentai did, they brought back the original villain of go ranger. They could have taken the footage from the big megazord battle and made it the season final. I have to agree with this list. Although thinking about Turbo, they actually did the best they could with what they had. The sentai was actually a self parody of the super sentai formula and Saban just adapted the thing, so it was probably for the best that they let the original rangers go. As for Megaforce and Super Megaforce... what a complete waste. The season had a tremendous potential to be the best of the show and they ruined it, in my opinion, because they tried to pack 2 seasons into one. Each sentai has around 48 to 52 episodes per season, aside from at least 3 movies.. and PR tried to compress all of that in 22 episodes.
They could have gone with Megaforce adapting only Tensou Sentai Goseiger and by the end of the season leave the audience with a cliffhanger (kinda like the ending of MMPR and starting of Zeo): the legendary battle. Imagine all previous ranger teams defending earth from the armada and sacrificing their powers to drive it away. They could have used a veteran ranger like Tommy Oliver as mentor. He would have learned about ranger keys (which could later use to create his master morpher) and send the rangers (the latest team from the previous season) on a quest to obtain the pirate keys, because that was Gokaiger's ability: they used "pirated" versions of previous ranger powers. Then just try and add as many cameos as possible to work as guides for the rangers and end it by returning the powers to the corresponding teams, with a last sight of Tommy morphing back into the green ranger (just as Akaranger was seen at the end of Gokaiger). It would have been great.

The megaforce & supermega force seasons are the only times that I've been tempted to try to find the Super Sentai version to see if was better. I'm heavily leaning towards trying to find them with an English dub.
The Super Mega Force suits are some of my favorite looking suits. (Though I'm not a fan of the trident the silver ranger uses.) With better acting and a story that took advantage of the pirate theme, it could have been a really interesting season. (Who knows, maybe someday a fan project might be done to re-make this season in this way. )
Once a ranger was one of my favorite episodes and it would be cool if they did a season of veteran rangers from different seasons working together like that for an entire season.

Turbo was definitely a big down fall for me, even as a young kid. I didnt actually mind Justin and as a kid I thought it was cool cause it was like "If he can be a power ranger then so can I!" But going from Zeo to Turbo just made no sense. How do you go from insane intergalactic zords and fighting a machine empire to... cars? Not to mention when the cast change happened (which I actually like the new cast and they shined really well 'in space') but that was the first major time we saw the rangers ACTUALLY lose. They had lost in the past, but only to immediately bounce right back. Where as this time there were new rangers who lost to one of the series worse villains, Divatox. It kind of felt like "Do these people even know what theyre doing? Why were the powers given to them?" But in the end I honestly feel like Turbo had to fail in order for In Space to shine. Which I still feel like In Space is arguably the best season of power rangers.

As a kid, watching power rangers, I thought lightspeed rescue was ok but couldnt grab my interest, and this was when it was airing when I was 5.
But then I got introduced to time force, and I LOVED it. In fact, it's my favorite PR series (2nd is in space). With wild force, as much as it doesnt get much of a positive reputation, I actually loved it. I loved the animal motif and animal spirit in gems.
However, when ninja storm came out, I just couldnt get into it. I felt like it tried to be too hip with the early 2000s x-games trend and I hated it. It made me stop watching power rangers until SPD and that series made me love power rangers again. I even liked mystic force because I remember watching it with my brother when it was airing.

For me, I can't really rank Megaforce/SMF as the worst. I've commented on this on other videos; but a lot of the reasons people tend to dislike it are not stuff they could have helped. But you're one of the few that cite very good reasons why it's not good.
But for me the worst is Overdrive. It comes down to the fact I can rewatch Megaforce, I've yet to fully get through a complete rewatch of Overdrive.
Megaforce is a weak series, but it has some good moments and good characters that manage to overcome all the negatives.
Overdrive doesn't. Overdrive has three characters I don't hate, outside of OAR, Spencer, Mack, and Furious. And the latter doesn't get enough screen time and what he has is shared by, imo, the absolute worst character in the entire franchise, Norg.
Megaforce doesn't have great characters, but at least they're rangers are actually a team, they want to do the right thing. They're occasionally interesting. The villains are mostly fun to watch. Overdrive has one awesome campy villain, one amazing snarky butler, and only one Ranger that actually deserves his powers, and one of the best crossovers in the franchise. Everything else just hurts to watch.
Between the two, I'd just rather have badly acted tolerable characters then well acted terrible characters.

And Mystic Force, if it didn't have a terrible Red ranger and awful arc it could have been a hit. the show is entirely about their leader even if he's just not interesting. and the only cool thing about it is Koragg. The samurai rangers didn't even have anything to do with real samurais. I only loved the part when Lauren Shiba took over as the red ranger and I wish it stayed that way forever. Dino Charge and Ninja Steel, i wish they're something like Dino Thunder and Ninja Storm but it's just not that good. They're kinda entertaining but eventually the tone of cheesiness was over done.

I personally believe Mystic Force had the most story driven plot in the series, and while it is bad you cannot deny it was at least interesting the first time through. Back to Red Ranger... there are episodes where he really does do a good job in his role, specifically the early episodes where he is starting to develop... but towards the end... he is honestly among the worst main characters in anything period. Dumb founded by everything and acting like a headless chicken all the time... but I honestly believe production had a lot of blame here, as you dont get from solid performance to "Oh my god just stop" without some outside influence.

I distinctly remember being underwhelmed while watching Megaforce & thinking it was a downgrade from Samurai, even as a kid, but without being able to properly articulate why.
When you said the acting lacked emotion, it clicked.
Samurai wasn’t perfect by any means & I think a good chunk of the criticisms are completely valid, but it was my introduction to the franchise & it’ll always have a special place in my heart for it. And that had to do with the performances.
Granted, the acting wasn’t going to win any awards, but you could tell the actors (by extension the writers & directors) were giving it all their all & clearly having fun.
Mikes’ occasionally annoying yet endearing charisma, Antonio & his introduction arc along with Jayden & Dekers’ dynamic being particular standouts for me. The characters in Megaforce didn’t invest me in the same way.
(Except for Robo Knight. He was cool.)
From what I’ve seen, the main cast seem like they’re pretty solid actors overall (especially Andrew Gray) but it’s been proven time & time again that even performances from the best actors around can suffer greatly from mediocre writing & direction.
It also didn’t help that this during the time in my life when I was REALLY into Adventure Time & Regular Show so I figured to give those two the time & attention I was giving to the Power Rangers franchise as whole.
I know I’m extremely late to the party & I’m sorry if I wrote a novel, but this video popped up in my recommended so I figured I’d give my own two cents. The comments have also inspired me to check out Gokaiger.

Do you think should hasbro erased super megaforce from power rangers canon and Make new gokaiger adaptation for power rangers 30th anniversary?
Super megaforce are so bad and gokaiger deserve better power rangers adaptation

I would say the worst season, or seasons in this case, would be the entire neo-saban era with the exception of Dino Charge. There was no character development at all, and it seemed like they wer just going through the motions. Yes Turbo wasn't the greatest, but I would still rate it better than the neo-saban era any day.

Yeah I've always thought the show started going downhill hard after RPM so I've only seen bits and pieces. Is Dino Charge actually good though? I always viewed it as a poor imitation of Dino Thunder but maybe I'll give it a shot

the reason turbo was so off the wall was because the japanese show was a joke show it was meant to be a parody

I was never a big fan of Power Rangers. When it came out, I was in middle school, but my younger cousins were huge fans of it. Toys, show, game (well, I did like the SNES game for it), etc. I would see the show sometimes when babysitting or when over at their place. Turbo is the only season, though, that I've seen all the way through. Just as cheesy as the other series before it and I mainly watched the show as a whole on occasion because I had a fangirl crush on Johnny Yong Boscht. lol That frog line from the movie was just too adorable. lol Too bad that Carlos guy replaced him in Turbo.
That aside, for Turbo, I thought it was kind of cool that they had an actual kid be a Power Ranger. I know I would've been stoked about it if I were that age at that time. When I was a kid, I actually did like seeing stuff with kids my age since usually they were relatable in some way. Who knows, maybe that's why I liked Sailor Moon back then. lol
Oh, and the origin for Turbo was that second movie. Rocky got hurt I think, and he was replaced with Justin. I remember the commercials for the movie and that part. Don't recall anything else...don't think I've ever seen it.
Super Sentai I hear is actually better. I have seen some of Zyuuranger and I did like some of it minus the cheesy monster fights. The thing that sticks in mind for me is the episode where the Blue and Pink rangers went bad. Billy and Kimberly had nothing on them. lol What'd they do, bully Bulk and Skull? lol Original, those two actually KILLED people.

Wouldn’t being a power ranger fan make you want to see or watch the original Sentai? You can find clips online and even get the seasons with English dubs. Gokaiger did the anniversary season so much better than Super Megaforce did

I would like to watch some Sentai series at some point though.

I am sad that I have to agree. Mega force and super mega force are only so high on my favorites because they were my first season and for reason liked it. It is pure nostalgia that keeps them alive for me. My favorites were Emma and Robo knight. Emma was actually decent as a ranger. She was kind but could hold her own. Troy was too bland, Noah would grow on me has he progressed in fighting but not one of my favorites. Part of Noah’s glow up was his relation to his sentai counterpart as a swordsman. Jake was the jokester, more so in super mega force due to his counterpart Sentai character being a klutz. Gia was too stand-offish. She had no issues, no troubles that were exclusively hers. She had no lesson because she was perfect in everything she did. Of course, you can’t hate robo knight. He was so cool. His whole lost memory and discovering how protecting humans are part of his mission is great. All in all, this series has place in my heart but that doesn’t stop me from admitting it was bad.

totally agree with the megaforce an super megaforce. They literally took one of the greatest sentai serie and just trashed it without respect. It should've been one of those things they should have considered. IMO although it wouldve been cool to see gokaiger in power ranger series, it just wasnt a good idea. The whole point of gokaiger was to reminisce and pay homage to the past 50+ years of the super sentai series. TBH the sentai series feels way more respected in japan than compared to USA respecting power rangers. They shouldve have skipped the gokaige just like they did with the train sentai.

I like your opinion and it's nice that you're only a Power Ranger fan, and doesn't watch the Super Sentai version, but your opinion makes even more sense if you watch the original Japanese one, in the Japanese version Goseigers (Megaforce) and Gokaigers (Super Megaforce) are different groups, one having a Angel gimmick, while the other having a pirate gimmick and sort of 'stealing', it makes absolutely no sense making both of them the same team, the turning into old power rangers was actually a good idea in the original, but executed poorly in the Power Rangers version, it's just pretty sad that they've botched it, since Goseiger and Gokaiger are REALLY GOOD seasons, and the Super Sentai battle is REALLY epic in the original

I don’t keep up with enough Power Rangers media to have any hugely negative opinions, but I tell ya, they knocked it outta the park with Power Rangers Dino Thunder. Incredible from start to finish IMO. It started airing right as I was entering teen hood and getting into that phase where I thought Power Rangers were dumb, but my little 4 year old step brother wanted to watch it. 2 episodes later and I’m hooked all over again, asking myself why I ever turned my back on the Rangers. Bought the complete series last month. The White Ranger design was so badass too. Excellent theme song that I still hum to this day. Just incredible.

So I’m one of the oddballs here, not only did I not mind Justin being a ranger but I actually liked the idea, mainly cause of how it represents us as kids wanting to be power rangers ourselves and seeing an actual kid, not the rangers getting turned young like in mighty morphin, was actually pretty cool. Plus pretty sure superhero comics beat them to the punch with young hero’s such as the side kicks like robin and kid flash, and of course from a tv media standpoint we had the big bad beetleborgs.
