      Yes this is true. He's laid back. I've noticed this approach gets me further in my job doing IT consulting. People are genuinely interested in how things work but are often intimidated when folks are impatient with them.

      @@funfun5656 I'm incredibly impatient, with myself because I should "know better" but on a jobsite recently 2 of the younger guys came up to me at different points and said "were you ever a teacher"? No why? "you have incredible amounts of patience when explaining how to do things and you put it so simply it's easy to understand.
      I also find that "pros" get too caught up in their own "Lingo" and lose it when people don't understand.

      it is funny but it actually makes sense too :) 100 for normal work conditions, 150 because watching means you got somebody around that is holding you up every now and then and 200 because that person is going to set you back in work hours where you alone would have done something in 2 hours top and with "help" you've done it in at least twice that time :)

    I am a fan of the channel, the work being done to restore all these treasures back to their original quality, and the honest critique on the manufacturers' blunders (to put it mildly). Being a proud owner of a 1992 VW Golf mk3 GTi myself, I think that this 1988 BMW 325ix is the best car in the collection, simply because of its unsurpassed quality of build, ease of maintenance, and low repair costs. A true gem!

      There's a guy like that at an independent Volvo shop I go to. He's the master tech and I swear he knows everything about every year and model Volvo. He's a really humble guy and he goes on our Volvo group forums and answers a lot of questions and gives advice. He's a great guy.

    My dad and i recently did the valve cover on my 2007 328i, and the N52 engine is much easier to work on than the N54 shown in that 535 in this video. However it was still very stressful and a lot of extra stuff before you can even access the valve cover. Especially with the valvetronic motor that goes into the valve cover that is extremely precise in its tolerances.

    I did change the timing belt on my 320 convertible three times. And I recommend for your first time: Remove all the front parts (Grill, radiator, bumper) to see everything you are doing. The shown "from the top method" is for people, who allready changed the belt once... And thake pictures and film everything when disassembling... ;)

    My son's work for huge tech firms in Seattle.
    They owned BMW's for years.
    M-3's, M-4s, M-5's.
    They all had to dump them.
    The cost of repairs was prodigious.
    Every time a service light went on it cost thousands.
    One designer son earns $200,000.00 plus a year and after he spent $40,000.00 in repairs on his M-3 ,after he spent $40,000.00 on the purchase price.
    He now drives a restored 1999 Honda Prelude,and a 1982 Delorean.
    He is perfectly happy finally.

      Agreed, 100PercentJake. European paint back then was fantastic. With decent maintenance, it is incredible. My Volvo is 31 years old, and the Ice Blue metallic still shines up like new.

      He doesn't sound Russian at all. Albanians pronounce the r like the English speakers do, which is an odd way to do it, so his accent is not very strong.

    Great video as always Hoovie! I'd recommend trading out the failure-prone hex head bolts to the updated torx style as well as lubricate the splines on the front driveshaft. It wouldn't be a bad Idea to give the car the "jack test" to make sure the viscous coupling in the transfer case is still working. Good luck!

      First thing you do when you buy a bmw if you plan on working on it is.....get a laptop and OBDII cable so you can download the BMW software tools. Its better than a carly. it has saved me thousands on my M3 and e46 touring.

      FYI harsh solvents actually will go into your hands, directly into your bloodstream. Awful for the vital organs. Liver, kidneys etc.
      We're talking professionals here, not weekenders. Longterm exposure.

    The Ridge Wallets are awesome!! I have used one for the last year and a half. Before I just carried a couple of loose cards in my front pocket. I hated the typical wallet size and shape. The Ridge Wallet is great and kinda fun to use especially when popping a card back into place.

    Wife had a 2016 X1 "M" model that would have cost around $10K in parts and labor for 3 years of problems if it weren't for the warranty. As soon as that was up - it went. This along with more than $500 to replace a battery (you can't do it yourself without the right battery "calibration" tool) was all it took for me to never look at another one. One and done.

    I've done all the work on my e60 with n62 engine. It has not been to bad and this is the first car I've really ever worked on myself. I'm over 300k miles now. I would hate to think of what it would have cost me if I was paying someone, but doing it myself hasnt been to much.

    I replaced the timing belt and water pump on my straight six Lexus by myself as well. Of course I didn’t have access to a repair shop, lift, specialized tools or a professional mechanic to do most of the work for me. Crawling around underneath my car in the driveway in the December wind and rain was fun. But it all came together in the end and was a good learning experience.

    Personally, I find the older M20 and M30 engines to be fun. They have tighter tolerances which makes older higher mileage engines run rougher, but I've never had a lot of trouble with them. Anything before 1995 is fun to work on.

    86/89 M20 engines were prone to the cylinder head bolts snapping off - not very common but BMW changed to Torx stretch bolts in late '89 for a reason and it is worth fitting them. You can replace the existing hex bolts one by one with Torx in a diagonal pattern, takes about an hour or so all in. I had two cars that did it, a 1987 E28 520i (no damage) and a 1989 325i when the camshaft lobe punched the bolt head through the centre coolant gallery. That made a mess.
