One thing I'm very thankful for this Thanksgiving is my 10 year bromance with the Car Wizard. I could not own these hoopties without him. My channel has always been pretty honest showing the good with the bad, but usually the bad only applies to the many stupid things I do, or the stupid things nameless BMW engineers have done over the years. In this instance, the Wizard made a doozy of a mistake, and I was really worried and upset about my dream car (and a huge investment). Clearly, though, I was being a bit of a drama queen here. The Car Wizard agreed to handle it immediately, and even said it was ok that we make this video on the subject before I even asked. I was conflicted about doing it, but knew would be a good, honest story about the ups and downs of car ownership. It's clear many of you think I rubbed Wizard's nose in it a little too much, and you are absolutely right. He is a great mechanic, and nobody is perfect, and I'm glad to see the thousands of nice comments showing you don't think less of him, because I don't. I also understand why some of you think less of me, being so upset about something that isn't life and death. I know many people would dream about having the problems I have, especially in this current turbulent world. I totally get it, and apologize to those I disappointed. I'm very fortunate to be where I am, and I'll never forget that it's because you all watch these stupid videos.
Well said Tyler, as I said in an earlier comment, in the long term the gearbox is probably toast, I would recommend that you and Wizard replace the gearbox while insurance will cover the cost, it will fail, (exactly what you were concerned about), later. It sucks and I feel your frustration, you were upset and it showed -- I guess that's being human. Keep-up the great contend.
Don’t think less of either of you and nobody should everyone is always upset in the moment and can always look back and point out how things can be done differently or better that’s why they say hindsight is 20/20 You had every right to be upset and wizard knows that and that is why he is handling it so professionally and is doing his best to make it right and that is what makes him a truly good and honorable mechanic and man in general Happy Turkey day to you Tyler and wizard 🧙♀️

Him and Wizard are both being good people about the situation and will get it handled.

Imagine if this had happened to someone outside of the YT car nut community. It probably wouldn't have been pick up until the gear box failed. So props to all of you guys for having each other's back. A special shout out to Ed for picking up on it and letting you know.
Stephen Johnson This is the real success story here. Trans is probably no worse for the wear, 100 miles with a different oil is probably nothing. Running it dry, or with coolant or something really dumb might be a different story.
This comment should be at the top if not also pinned. Very likely what happened. One of those innocent mistakes with huge consequences. I cannot have my attention divided when working on something relatively complex because of the terror of ruining a costly endeavor.
It can't be easy for him, he's a independent garage working on some very specialist cars without necessarily knowing them as well as the specialist would whilst having a camera pointing at him, you've got to cut the guy some slack for that.
@@nickmotsarsky4382 I love the wizard, but gear oil does not go into an automatic trans. That's a pretty big mistake. Mercedes has various documents for which fluids to use on various engines and transmissions. I think he just saw the fluid and assumed gear oil.

One of the reasons I follow these kind of channels is because they show you the right and the wrong. A mechanic even with a life experience can make mistakes. We're humans. We mess up, we make it right. Having a mechanic that acknowledges the error and corrects it speaks highly of him. Kudos to Car Wizard for this. Hats down to you my friend.
Issues will occasionally happen but you're lucky to have the Car Wizard. You're really lucky he will stand behind it, more than many mechanics would do.
The Wizard has helped you immensely with the all the hoopties on this channel. I feel bad for him, such a simple and honest mistake. Not a huge fan of the public shaming of him. I understand you want to tell the whole story but I think this entire thing could’ve been done a little more civilly.
@@jplandscaping5069 true. The heater core he did on that Land Rover this past summer he TOTALLY overcharged the customer for, and performed way more tear down on the dash than was needed. It was a rookie mistake. I thought Tyler was very measured though deep down he was seething. The problem is the wrong fluids may have started premature degradation that won't show up for some time, it was a bad mistake to make. Tyler told them specifically to be careful and double-check and they still fucked it up. The Wizard has got complacent, the money was too easy.
@@coyote5735 “rookie” mistake is the perfect term here. Mistakes happen everyday in all walks of life, but there’s no excuse for a “rookie mistake”....on a $200,000 car, especially when he had the EXACT procedures right in front of him. If this had happened at the dealership level or any other “professional, certified” Mercedes dealer, they WOULD be replacing that transmission. I imagine because of the “relationship” Tyler has with the “wizard”, Tyler will simply live with it for awhile....then dump the car. Of course, because of the public nature of RUclips, and if/when Tyler does sell this car to, he will be FORCED to disclose this “rookie mistake”, which will ultimately affect the sales price. At the end of the day, Tyler got fucked, and if it was me, I would sever my relationship with wizard for the high dollar maintenance needs, and maybe keep the wizard around for the projects.
BAd Luck Hoovie and bad luck Wizard. Well done to both of you for being grown up, honest and understanding. By being that way you both walk away with smiles and reputations intact!
I had a similar "we screwed up, but we'll fix it" issue with a local BMW shop a few years ago. In retrospect, it made me a more loyal customer. That said, given libel laws in the U.S., there's absolutely no way we'd ever see this video if all of the economics (including permission to "take blame on video") hadn't already been worked-out (in writing) beforehand. Thankfully, you've got two honorable parties who have mutual respect and a long working relationship--both in and out of public forums. As much as Messrs. Hoover and Long would like to cite this as a policy example for others, this outcome would be extremely exceptional (cussing or no cussing) for your average Joe attempting resolution of a negligent repair by your average repair shop. I wish this "exceptional context" was more explicitly highlighted in the video.
I don’t think he’s worried about the car he’ll be more worried about what reputation hit he gets out of this because a lot of people blame him for things that aren’t his fault on an old merc but this is a 6 figure car that it was definitely his fault (and magic Mike)
@@Big1_ it shows the reality of what really happens at a car shop even the master's mess up jobs! its all in how he goes about fixing the issue, no rep lost in my book!
Hopefully he didn't get his estimate from a youtube video too. I know my buddy had his replaced under warranty and it was a $16k bill here in California. We probably have the highest mechanic rate in the states so I highly doubt it'll be any more than that. Not sure where $30k came from.
If you look online, the transmission is ~$11k for a new one from Mercedes. You have to add fluids and labor, but figure that's another $3-4k.. Cheaper if the wizard is doing it.
Do I remember incorrectly? Wizard says this fluid goes here and that fluid goes here, and former Mercedes tech says you’re wrong and then he himself does it wrong. I don’t think it was a Wizard mistake! But as owner, he owns the problem.
I filled my CVT with gear oil in my 2013 Subaru Legacy. Only saving grace is that I never started it. Realized what I had done a soon as no oil came out of the fill check hole after adding an extra quart. Worst sinking feeling of any day working on cars since highschool. $800 and about 5 gallons of fluid flushes later at the dealership, I've put another 30k miles on the car.
