    Got mine done recently. I understand how nerve-wrecking it is and I was nervous on the day of the procedure, but they do give you medicine to help you relax and numb the shit out of your eyes so I barely felt a thing. My doctor was so kind and gave me a stress ball and played relaxing music in the background which definitely helped, it's definitely worth it and you can immediately tell the difference the next day.

    I just did SMILE 5 days ago, could already watch TV the evening of the procedure and now I'm having perfect eyesight apart from glarings at night (which is a side-effect 100% of the time and slowly fades away). No dry eyes at all so far, didn't feel a thing during the surgery. For those who are hesitant, just check all the comments below and do yourself a favour and get the surgery. SMILE is an absolutely incredible technology. If you are a good candidate for SMILE, it really does not make sense to get LASIK, LASEK, or PRK IMO. Surgeons are always hesitant to use the word "better", but SMILE yields the great clinical outcomes of LASIK, but is less invasive, doesn't use a corneal flap that can potentially become dislodged if you get hit hard in the eye, has a more simple recovery, and it severs fewer nerve endings which means less issue with dry eyes post op. At least in my situation (someone with dry eye from MGD), SMILE was drastically better than other options. Anyone considering permanent vision correction should definitely consider it when weighing their options.

    Just got mine done on two days ago on Monday. The car ride home was noticeably better vision but of course it was blurry. Took my nap and woke up and most of the blurriness was gone. I was actually watching tv even before my nap the first hour and a half after surgery. Took my nap for 3 hours and was seeing really well. Had my 24hr post op appt yesterday, drove myself there. Vision is amazing, they said I am already seeing 20/16. It’s Wednesday now and just got off of a flight and never felt better. Can’t wait to see how much more it could even possibly improve to. I do feel like my eyes are slightly dry. But, they have always felt this way as I wore contacts for almost 2 decades and didn’t always change them as often as I should or take them out every night. After the surgery, your vision is cloudy and it will feel like you have an eyelash or something else in your eye, so it's an annoying feeling but nothing painful. The second day, my vision is already so much better. Not completely 20/20 yet, but pretty damn close. No pain or burning in the eyes whatsoever. Hi Doc, have you heard about the newer procedure called CLEAR? I believe it’s a more refined form of its predecessor SMILE. It’s also known as Corneal Lenticule Extraction for Advanced Refractive (CLEAR) Correction. I heard it’s the 4th generation vision correction technology. I’m not sure if it’s being used in the US as of this time.

    • @JohanKesti
      @JohanKesti 19 дней назад

      Was wondering as well about this. From what I can gather, CLEAR seems to be another marketing term for SMILE used by Ziemer (one of the laser manufacturers). There's a video on RUclips about how they do it: ruclips.net/video/PxP9Lk7GeZw/видео.html - seems very similar to SMILE.

    • @KS-mxh
      @KS-mxh 2 года назад +15

      I just did it 10 days ago at the time of this comment. Short answer: Yes… but no. Long answer: you still feel and have control to your eye muscle, it is not a complete paralysis per se… but they will have various eye drops that they use on you before the surgery, so your eyes will be “less responsive” if that makes sense, and during the surgery they will tape and force your eyelid open with a special tool so you wouldn’t be able to close your eyes even if you tried hard. Those are like the “safety switch” I guess. However when it comes down to the actual procedure, it is so fast that I doubt there is anyone couldn’t endure. Yes it is slightly uncomfortable when they move that tool around your eye, but it does not hurt at all, just uncomfortable, and that lasts like less than a minute. They also have a small light above you, which they ask you to look at to keep your eyes straight and keep you focus. The surgeon will also let you know what to do at what stage (ie. hold your eye still for 10-20 seconds, you can blink now, etc). All in all, it is fast and not hurting to the slightest. I was worried too but it was a less than 30 minutes visit to the hospital to get me (hopefully) life-time of glasses free experience.

However what I can tell you is I indeed have dry eyes after the surgery but it is very minor, by minor I mean it only takes a drop of eye drop to overcome. And the problem is more noticeable at night than day time so it wouldn't affect the daily activity too much. And if I use the eye drop as per instructed (4 times a day) some time i wouldn't feel the dry eyes at all. But you know sometimes I just forget and I might feel my eyes are tired and dry, that's when I know I need a drop of eye drop, and that will fix it for me.

      @rexhamiltonmd  Год назад +5

      HI Ben...Dr. H here. I know there are many who share your sentiment. Believe it or not, patients feel nothing! The eye is anesthetized so there is no sharp sensation. There is the sensation on the dissection portion that the eye is moving which is kind of weird. With regard to the eye moving, during the laser part (first part of video) the laser interface has control of the eye so it won't move. There is a small amount of pressure on the eye during the initial part of the laser portion...kind of like putting a contact lens in your eye. The entire process, for both eyes, takes 8 minutes.
      Honestly I debated about putting this video up for the exact reason you stated...it may scare folks off. On the flip side, a painless procedure that takes 8 minutes total for both eyes, is really appealing so I wanted folks to see it start to finish, unedited. Keep in mind as well that there are NO restrictions on post-operative day 1 because there is no flap. You can get in the UFC ring if you wanted to! Eye make up, swimming, sports, all fine on day one.
      Vision is a bit foggy typically for a few days but not enough to limit your activities.
      Hope to see everyone soon!

      @@rexhamiltonmd Hi Dr. Hamilton, thanks for the reply, didn't expect a response. Really appreciate it. I'm actually scheduled to do SMILE two days from now. I am a bit apprehensive though because 1) I have blepharitis, chronic pinkeye and also lots of staph stuff on my eyelids and 2) I am planning to experiment legally with psychedelic drugs a month or two after the surgery but am not sure how it'll affect the post-surgery healing. Also, 3), I tend to respond ineffectively to anesthetic eye drops, and can still feel sensations quite clearly. And 4), I'm worried because SMILE does not come with iris-tracking technology the way LASIK does, so if I move my eyeballs while the laser is zapping out the lenticule, I guess it means trouble?
      One thing I don't really understand is how SMILE is advertised as cutting less corneal nerves than LASIK, given how the entire lenticule looks like nerve-severing across the whole circle. But it was still an extremely informative video!
