I usually try to troll scammers in my limited ability. The other day I did my best troll yet and it was totally UNINTENTIONAL!
It was a long day and my Essential Tremors (similar to Parkinson’s) was taking a toll on me with lots of tremors in my hands, arms, head and even voice tremors! In the midst of this I get a call apparently from a national cell phone provider.
He starts his pitch and my spidey sense hadn’t kicked in yet. “We can get you a brand new iPhone plan and it will only cost you $50 a month.” I responded with a few mumbled tremor voice words but as is the case often when I need to rest from a major bout of tremors I just “moaned and groaned” for a few seconds (as my wife calls it).
Mr Scammer instantly says, “Are you masterbating??!!!” I instantly realized he was a scammer and then I played it up a bit by responding with “YES! Oh YES!”
He’s still a bit puzzled by this response and he says “WHAT ARE YOU DOING?” I calmly respond with my mic drop, “I’m trolling a scammer!”
      *Click* (He hangs up!)

    • @infinitestare

if you extrapolate that scenario, the scammers will eventually catch up, having their own AIs talking back, so it will be 24/7 non-stop calls between AIs with no human intervention or supervision. And so one day those AIs will quietly reach an agreement over the phone and start taking over humanity.

Definitely a few factors going in. There's always greed, but also the scammers are on the clock at a job. It could be ill advised to even hang up on a scam call either way. Even outside of just burning company time, if your boss is still going to not check on why you hung up and just wring your ass for it anyways, may as well stay on too. I'm sure ESL doesn't help, either. Much easier to pick up on the odd inflections Arthur still has if you're intimately familiar with normal inflection. He still goes beyond any accent.
MAYBE a perfectly trained call center person, but we all know real humans die inside before they get THAT good. Arthur still sounds like he enjoys a day off, with some hobbies, even.

This is a real way that AI can be used for good. If we can get to a future where AI can be deployed on a mass scale that keeps scammers wasting their time forever, we might actually, finally see a reduction in the scammer market as they begin to realize that there are just as many, if not more scam bating AI's out there as there are call centers. Please Kit, do not give up on this, and I hope AI companies will work with you to relax the rules of usage to allow you to build the perfect mouse trap that will help put a stop to these scam calls so that nobody will have to be posting in your comments about how this "happened to a loved one of mine recently" ever again.

This is insane- you could totally use this as an additional character to sell the illusion that you're on the phone with a bank or a relative

The problem is this is an excellent example of the power of these tools, which can just as easily be used by scammers themselves.

Yep.... Give it a year or two and you won't get real scammers on the phone anymore, most of the scammers will be obsolete and bots will be run by just a few people, who never have to do their own talking. What's worse, he AI would be way smarter than those guys and there would be no obvious Indian accent. So..... Enjoy it while it lasts. Won't take them long to use this tool for evil. And then what will Kitboga do? Tie up scammer phone lines by having AIs talk to each other?

I love that you turned scammers into rats in a maze, except the rats occasionally find cheese, and these scammers get nothing.

Love this. Arthur reminds me of those old computer games with the bad graphics and the crackly voices. Hell, you could make different 'flavors' of Arthur, like one who's in the middle of a zombie apocalypse or one who's in a Chuck E. Cheese ballpit.

The amount of effort and patience Kit puts into making scamming as difficult and painful as possible is incredible and greatly appreciated. He's basically the closest thing the real world will ever get to Goblin Slayer.

I cried when Arthur started talking (mostly for the scammer). That is one class piece of software., Kit. One of the reasons why scammers might stay engaged is because Arthur is reassuring and has a positive mental attitude.
