    I heard an interesting story about a woman that couldn't find her meter shut off. Specifically gas. Turns out all of them on her street were buried when the city put in a sidewalk and then claimed the homeowners were responsible for having it moved if they wanted to shut their gas off, including tearing up the sidewalk and putting it back.
    She just stopped paying her bill and when they threatened to shut her water off, she said "please do". After a few conversations the city admitted it was their responsibility and fixed all of the meter shut offs free of charge.

    Regarding the question "why not just shut the water off at the street?" one should note that your steet shutoff valve may not even work anymore. Mine is from 1972 and doesn't completely shut off the flow of water. If you complain to the city about it they tell you that you shouldn't be messing with their equipment anyway to scare you away from pushing the issue. I had an old main shut off valve fail underneath my house and I had to shut off the water at the street and was still getting soaked by the water getting past the main valve. Thank God the sharkbite worked without leaking. And before the sharkbite hating crowd comes a calling I already know the internet hates them spare me the comments!

    the only illegal thing i can think of is the local codes may say that you may not install on the city side of the water system.
    here in the united states we have a thing called a curb witch is where the town and homeowner responsibility ends.
    so it may be possible that you may have some exposed pipe in your house that may be on the home owner side that is still town property like the piece before the water meter so you may have to ask your town about where you can install it.

    • @thomasdalton1508

      Who owns piping varies by town in the USA some towns your responsible for the entire service line not just to meter/curb. That valve is best for places like a multi unit apartment complex/highrise, where a full building shut down for an emergency is a NO GO, or for maintenance work. Plus, if you turn off at the base level, you then have the down presure of all the other apartments above the one being worked on and that ammount of water and preasure in the line is crazy.... So this valve lets maintenance/super's isolate an apartement and turn off to just that unit/floor or, in an emergency where a leak is discovered, but cant find out where and there is no maintenance room, no way to tell what does what, etc... this can help turn off a floor/line in an emergency preventing a bad Blockout. I would say this is NOT for the every day DIY'er, but more designed to the maintenance industry/building super's.

    I have installed probably over a hundred of these. All the way from 1/2” to 3”, using three different brands (sorry, I don’t remember the name of the third.). I was in the engineering dept of a major Las Vegas strip property with well over 3000 rooms,casino, convention area, shops, and every thing else you would find in a mega resort.
    Like every other Vegas property, it was built on a super tight budget, and the cheapest materials were used.
    When we would have a waterline failure, a once or twice a week happening, we would attempt to turn off the water at the closest valve. More often than not, it wouldn’t hold. If we could, we would go to the next valve back and try that one but that was seldom an option as the further you go back, the more you shut down. Executives don’t like that obviously. So we would install one of these so we could make the repair.
    In my jurisdiction, they are allowed for temporary installation only, unless something has changed since I retired.
    That meant use the valve to make a emergency repair, then plan a shutdown of a large part of the system in the wee hours of the night and replace the valves behind it and cut the quick valve out and trash it.
    A typical 1/2 broken water line would usually require 2 to 4 valves to be replaced, and yes, we always replaced with high quality valves.
    One last note, while expensive, we didn’t pay any where near the prices quoted. A 1/2 was about 150.00 and a 3 inch was about a grand.

I also set up my homes so if I need to renovate any room I can bypass the existing water lines with farm grade hose and garden hose fittings. Do that right and if you need to your system can run off a temporary water heater sitting on a pallet outdoors so you can always shower and wash up.

    I had to pay a plumber the first time I had a faucet burst on me. I had only lived in my first house for a few months, and had no idea there was shut off at the water meter, or how to use it. Now I know, and was able to buy one of those water meter rods for it. I've had to turn off the water to fix a small leak since then, so it's definitely been beneficial. If I didn't have access to a shut off, I would definitely want one of these things.

      @SilverCymbal  11 месяцев назад +7

      Not sure where you live but in the east coast with older cities and towns often shut offs get buried and sometimes just forgotten. I think thats why these are so popular in the UK where the issue can be the same. When you move further south and to the westcoast you see much better developed areas where things like shut offs are much more standardized. I had family in Boston and they had a shut off under a floorboard in their living room that controlled 2 units. Thats my theory on it, but certainly may not be accurate but it definitely happens.

    • @chrisrichard298
      @chrisrichard298 11 месяцев назад +7

      The other issue, especially in the area Chris and I live in, is many, many buildings are OLD. The shutoffs, even assuming they exist, are so old, brittle, and poorly maintained that when you do finally need to shut your water off, you often can't. The valve may break, leak, or just not even turn. There is definitely value in this product if you face an old, crusty shut off valve that has no hope of working. Here in New England we usually have two shut off valves for a structure. One is the curb stop, located out by the street, that is 5-8 feet down in the ground and you need a special tool to operate it. This valve is primarily used by the municipality to shut off water in an emergency or if you fail to pay your bill. The second one is (usually) in the basement. That's the one you are supposed to use if you have to perform work on your system. Since no one touches these valves, often for decades at a time, they get corroded, caked with minerals, and the seals get dried out. The second you touch that old valve, you are committed. Exercising the valve occasionally definitely helps, but I don't know of anyone that has "Exercise Water Valves" penciled into their calendar. It's just not something you think about until you need it. Most newer buildings they install a ball valve instead of a gate or globe valve. Ball valves are MUCH more reliable, but many local building codes haven't really caught up. It was only a handful of years ago here in Manchester that they started to allow plastic sewer lines underground. Before that you had to use cast iron. What could possibly go wrong? Best advice, if you have an old globe or gate valve and it still works, shut if off, cut the line after it and install a ball valve while you still can. Then never touch that old valve again.

    • @bladeoflucatiel
      @bladeoflucatiel 11 месяцев назад

      The only reason is if you live in an old building and scheduling a shut off is out of the question. Even if your appartment has an individual shut off valve in some cases you still need the super "supervision".

      I suspect most everyone has a shutoff somewhere, but in the fullness of time they can be lost by being built into a renovation, or buried by landscaping or other dirt work. Even if you know where it is, older valves are frequently the gate style that fills up with crud, and is no longer fully able to shut things off.

      But then the business would take on the project of "how do we scale our current processes to make much more volume without impacting any of the characteristics of the product?".
      Its not that easy to change the amount of something that is being manufactured. Machines have max run-rates & tend to perform worse the harder you run them (and break down more - leading to stock-outs), material flows take up tons of space (faster production = more material handlers+forklifts, need more space , need new factories because most factories aim to operate close to full floor-plan wise for profitability). Stocking parts for mass-sales takes up EVEN MORE space & requires world class levels of warehouse management (you need special forklifts for high-density warehousing, should they buy those forklifts or a new building? How would they handle being in a new building? Move machines?). The experienced people involved in the processes have figured out small things over time only they know that they do to keep things running smoothly. The list goes on and on.
      It is in no way a simple feat to produce "more of something and sell it for less money". Its a monumental feat that 100's of thousands of people in factories & workshops spend their entire efforts on daily, just to make the progress you already witness in the products you see today.
      For the business, making THE SAME # of parts & INCREASING PRICE to help manage demand is MUCH MORE APPEALING & ACCOMPLISH-ABLE. Then "just selling more of them for less".
      They may be working on trying to "sell more for less", but that work tends to take 3-7 years, in my experience, depending on the resources mobilized for the project & the leadership of the project team.

    I'm cutting the pipe and shoving an open sharkbite valve in before spending 500 bucks. Or using a compression fitting instead of the sharkbite

      1st reasonable response yet. I've had sharkbite fitting in my house for over ten years now and not one single issue. Any plumber that says otherwise is a liar.

    Soo, as it is copper and commonly used for under 1000 PSI, I don't think the appliance it self is illegal. As you point out, it does give you an extra outlet.

    If I really would need a valve somewhere RIGHT NOW, then this would be a good option to have - simply because it works and that's always better than no option. But I would be highly hesitant to install that if there's any way around it. Because: WHAT IF THAT THING FAILS? I'd still have to close some valve that isn't there… but now FAST!
    that said: in those cases nobody cares about price too much

    This looks awfully similar to a saddle valve, which are not permitted by the plumbing code in many, many jurisdictions. This valve looks like it uses the same concept as a saddle valve, so, yes, it very well may be illegal. Check your local codes office.

    I had one of those saddle valves spontaneously start leaking at my wife's business. It wasn't even being used for anything (I think it was probably installed to provide water to a refrigerator). Fortunately it was caught before any damage was done but that was only by chance and it could have been running overnight.

    • @sewerrat7612
      @sewerrat7612 11 месяцев назад

      Sharkbite valves work better for home owners if using on copper remove insert and slide on with valve open so pressure doesn't blow it off then close. Perfer Hou just call a plumber though since in many areas insurance won't cover water damage from homeowners trying to correct piping if something goes wrong.

      Note the mentions of places with no interior water supply shutoffs but at the street (house/utility demarcation). This can be used to provide a whole house shutoff (or if wanted shutoffs elsewhere - maybe for supplies to the yard bibs/faucets) near the utility entrance or on the interior side of a water meter. Just needs a proper screw down while the water flowing remains in service. The main complaint appears to be the cost is as much or more as a plumber visit to solder one in for this one or an even more expensive competing brand.
