Right after Arthur shoots Murray in the face, he laughs. Not the impulsive cackle stemming from his mental affliction, but an honest to God genuine laugh. At that moment, Arthur Fleck was more sane than he had ever been before. When I realized that, my brain jumped ship and caught Oceanic Flight 815. If you know, you know.
One thing I liked about this depiction of the Joker was his awkwardness, like the awkward way he went for a third shot then turned away. Even when he went over the edge and fully invested in the killing he still maintained some of that awkwardness.
I'm never going to forget watching this in theaters, this scene made everyone gasp and jump. I remember feeling sick, because it felt real, especially the scenes leading into this, it really started putting you into Arthur's view and his world.
In the summit of the supreme irony, in 2024 Todd Phillips (it's my POV) tried to destroy Arthur with "Joker: Folie à Deux" because he realized how people loved a mentally ill who started a revolution against an upper-class that had the rest of the society under their feet. The result: the total exaltation of the first part and the total rejection (and eventually oblivion) of the second. Take care when you try destroy an idol of the people. Joker 2019 is unbeatable. Symbolism. How many mass casualty events due to folks like Joker.. every single one was bullied, ostracized marginalized and de-humanized by their society.. a mean and violent COLLECTIVE, on the daily, destroying people that are considered unwanted. I feel that speech and conclusion as a satisfying expression towards that end. Symbolism, indeed.
It's true tbh. Everybody can't be friends, but the short interactions people have with each other can effect a person's entire day. It doesn't take but a second to smile or send a friendly vibe. Yet, I'm a realist so I'm 99.9% positive this will never happen. 😢
No one is meant to idolize or champion Joker here. His actions are heinous and evil. However, the point of the film is to remind people that 99% of the time, evil people dont just become evil for no reason. Thats why this film is so good. Its a harsh reminder to not be so flippant about how you treat others, whether individually or as a collective. You never know what you might say or do that will be the final straw for someone else to lose it.
I think it's funny that all of these young generations assume we was going to say ''That's Life"....when if you really know the Joker, he wouldn't say that. He'd for sure say, "That's Entertainment!". Especially this Arthur Fleck version.
She's right. A lot of them expected the shooting and then they were surprised... shocked... anyway. I think it's because the shooting was more realistic than most tv and movie shootings. Or maybe folks expect him to brandish and threaten with the weapon to work up to using it.
We do these things they did to him or didn’t do to help him every day in every major city in America. They failed to avert the coming catastrophe. They failed to get him the help he needed and it’s tragic.
