- A playthrough of Interplay's 1992 cinematic action-adventure game for the Super Nintendo, Out of this World.
For those of you not in North America, it was called Another World in Europe and Outer World in Japan.
Out of this World was a pretty eye-opening game when it first released on the Amiga in 1991, doing things that were generally thought impossible at the time. Instead of then standard 2D graphics, OotW used bitmaps only for the backgrounds, and all of the animated objects are 3D, rendered in real-time with vectors and animated using rotoscoping techniques (as was seen in Mechner games like Prince of Persia and The Last Express). Though it looks a bit crude compared to modern stuff, full-screen cinematics in 3D running at a reasonably fast framerate were unheard of, and it was breathtaking in action. It still looks awfully good largely thanks to the strength and consistency of the art design.
It plays well too. The controls are very similar to Prince of Persia (as well as Ootw's spiritual successors Flashback and Heart of Darkness), in that they're extremely smooth and movements are well articulated, though to someone not familiar with this style, they might seem unresponsive or laggy. It doesn't take much time to adapt, though.
I should also mention that it's quite difficult. Sure, it's quick to run through like I do here in no time if you know it by heart, but as a kid I spent weeks playing and figuring stuff out before I got to the end. It's just as much a puzzle game as it is an action one, and the combo suits it well. It was critically acclaimed when it was new, and it's seen a number of releases and rereleases over the years, but the core game endures pretty well.
Even more impressive than the PC versions at the time (would you believe it came on a single floppy? And the Dos version only required 640k of memory!) was the 16-bit console ports. Granted, the SNES version's frame rate wasn't as smooth and you had fairly frequent load times, but this was faithfully smashed onto a 8mbit cartridge for a console with a fraction of the power that the target computers ran it with.
It's an acquired taste (duh, it's French), but this early 90s technological, cinematic tour-de-force is still an impressive piece of work that everyone should experience at least once.

I finally found it. The game that I remember playing as a kid, but never beat. I couldn't for the life of me remember what the game was called, I was just having weird memories of the first scenes of the game. I can't believe the long search is over.
Same man, it's crazy, i just remembered the cave part
@@Darkneo7 Our long search is over friend. Now, we shall know only peace
I got this game send by mail from my dad, at the time he was living in the USA, and I was at Guatemala, he said he found it at a yard sale, I was 7 with no english knowledge, me and my brother try for more than 7 years and the far we reach was at the cave when you are running from the water.
The passcode is XDDJ, that I'll never forget that stage haunted me for ever until the day I'do die
SAME!! i scrolled through every SNES game until I found the picture that looked familiar. I couldn't get never get past the very beginning it seems.
Me paso lo mismo, tengo 33 años y pense nunca encontrar este juego solo tenia memoria de imágenes, y por un review lo logre encontrar, increíble!!!
Out of this World really doesn't get as much credit as it deserves in the modern day. It's an incredible looking game on the SNES, and it was a truly innovative, visionary product of its time.
Nice one NC. I love this game and it's always great to see it getting another look. But then I even kinda like Heart of the Alien. Also, me gusta.
A feat of programming excellence, it was thought snes couldn't handle this game, but master programmer Rebecca heineman of interplay used tricks and techniques to pull it off without fx chip. Thats why there is loading screens
Concordo mas o que tem haver com Zangado? Kkk
it was brilliant. WAY ahead of its time.
Yeah, may not seem like it, but this is pretty impressive for the SNES.
5 year old me was not prepared for this game. Literally nightmare fuel for a little kid.
The worm with the tooth was messed up
why?
Same here, just watching my older cousin play this game one afternoon when I was 7 brought some many nightmares to me !
When I was 4 or 5 years old this game scared the shit out of me on the first sequence lmao.
HAVENT THOUGHT ABOUT THIS GAME IN 20 YEARS AND THEN SUDDENLY I HAVE A DREAM ABOUT IT.
me too

Same here 😮😮
There is currently the remaster of this game for almost all modern platforms.
Never beat it. Much needed closure. Thanks for this.
Girl, same
Same. I was young but never made it more then 3 minutes
@@jrm3682 that’s what she said
I beat it, took some getting used to with those levers near the end
I beat it off a single quarter. As always.
I remember renting this game from a video rental store in 1994. Stayed up all night playing it; couldn’t beat it. Then I pulled out the cover insert of the game cartridge and found that someone had written down all the cheat codes. 😂 Whoever you are you are the MVP.
this was always a surprise bonus back then. haha, i forgot about that happening!
My parents got me this game when I was a kid. It was pure nightmare fuel for me.
Now, I can actually appreciate what it was for it's time. Absolutely amazing game. Way ahead of it's time
Why nightmare fuel? For me was just frustrating and difficult. Never could beat it and ended up not playing it anymore
@@slavsterbater I was a pretty young kid. I was believe 5 when my parents first got me it. The leech things use to scare me a ton and they still give me the shivers xD
@@slavsterbater "Why nightmare fuel?" Lol. You can't take 5 steps in the game without risking a gruesome death of one form or another. When you're a kid that shit's scary.
I was like 14 when it came it, but I get how it could freak you out at 5. The deaths and faces of the aliens in that game were freaky. And the game was pretty dark.
@@P_uddles and don't forget the panther from level one
It's absolutely fascinating to see actual full on real time in-game cutscenes in a game this old.
Whoever wrote the musical score for this game is a brilliant composer. The music of this game is epic and still blows my mind.
Yes bro it's creative
Ironic in new version of anniversary they removed the music …
@@hernanperez5497 i cant imagine it without music
it's the soul of the game
@@hernanperez5497ye I bought couple days ago😂. Wasted $. Just gonna emulate snes version instead
@@hernanperez5497 It's not that they removed the music from the anniversary version, it's just that the original version don't have any music during the gameplay. The musics are exclusive to the console versions (SNES, Megadrive and Mega CD).
half an hour? goddamn, this game took me forever to beat!
I remember being absolutely stunned by the graphics in this game. Some of the rotoscoping looks awkward as far as the art style, but the animation is silky smooth and I think that's what was so impressive about it. The game play left a lot to be desired in my opinion. Not really a fan of the trial and error style of play these kind of games went for, but I can totally see the appeal. I just feel like a lot of care, attention to detail and passion went into developing this and it shows in the final build. I feel like this game inspired the first couple of Oddworld games.
Yes! Oddworld definitely was inspired by this. Those games were good too, but this one feels more "adult" and dark.
I felt relieved reading the comments and learning that everyone had nightmares of this game and not just me
The soundtrack was creepy n it still is and I’m 40 now
This game was completely different than anything I had played to that point. Awesome video
I know it might sound crazy, but Out of This World is in my top 10 games of ALL time. This is one of those super hard games that just won't let you stop, you just HAVE to keep going, and I did! I normally don't like overly difficult games, but once you figure out the patterns and what to do, it's an amazing experience. Kind of a double take moment when you see the naked aliens at the pool, too.
Easily agreed
Doesn’t sound crazy at all. Loved it too. Blew me away back in the day.
I remember playing this game at like 11 years old and being totally puzzled, yet infatuated with this. I didn't make it very far lol
I recognized what it was pretty quickly... just a cheesy "gotcha" game. It was nothing but random guesses until you stumbled on to the right ting to do.
Me too
how could someone do all this back in the day without dying of frustration all these puzzles without clues.
Back in the day we generation x had more patience. That and hours of replays!

All my childhood is coming back with this game, just that Im played it in PC
I'm glad this game was never near me when I was a kid. This is looks like the kind of game to burrow into your young subconscious and live rent-free for decades
I rented this game and the opening sequence was terrifying. I never got past the prison part lol
Man, I am sooo glad you posted this. My siblings and I never could get past the part when we first met the ape friend.

As a gamer for 23 years., i declare! This is the hardest game i had ever played..
Just recently played the PC version for the first time, and it honestly blew me away. I'm impressed by how well the visuals translate to the SNES.
I forgot about this game! Holy shit this game creeped the hell out of me when I was like 8. Wow, so happy AVGN made a reference to this on one of his vids lol
Such a masterpiece. Thanks for covering like every game ever on this NBC Handel, you're a legend!
yeah this game blew my mind with the cinematic scenes and gameplay. It was a real nice foreshadow for what was to come in the future.
I played this game back in the early 90's, on a Sega Genesis, always remembered the game, just not the title. Brings back a lot of memories. The emotional ending always stuck with me.
This is the most unknown/under rated game for SNES. I could never beat it as a kid. Thank you for this walk through!! I can now check beating this game off my bucket-list 😀
GREAT game. It’s unofficial sequel, made by the same people, Flashback, was a great game as well. Really two 16 bit classics that pushed the hardware. I had Out Of This World on the SNES and Flashback on the Sega Genesis. Just great times to be a gamer back in 1991-92.
This could be a movie.
I thought that when I played it all those years ago.
Masterpiece game. Thanks for playthrough.
This port has to be the best port I've ever played, plus the god damn soundtrack is so full of life, suspense and dread.
I have not play this game in 30 years miss playing this game I am 40 years old. Thank you for showing this game j Basham
快40了,但是第一次知道这个
Really impressive game for its time!
It certainly is! I can’t believe this is on SNES. It looks nothing like an SNES game!
Loved this game back in the day. It took me almost a year to comlete tough as a kid.
This game was ahead of it's time
Toda una obra de arte con los pixeles en esa época
SOME DAY THE CARTRIDGE OF THIS PROTOTYPE GAME WILL BE WORTH SOMETHING OF RIDICULOUS VALUE.
definitely the best port ever, mainly due to the soundtrack.
Played this for hours, couldn't go beyond minute 22...
loved this game as a kid. still love it, it withstood the test of time for sure. its so impressive the great job they did considering the limits of technology they faced at the time.
WoW serious Flashback...I remember play this as a kid ...
#Thxx for the memories
One of my best games.thank you.
Glad the 42 years-old me just watched this. I never did finish the game back then, and I think I rented it maybe 2 times rather than just one. Here's the fun part though, I clearly remember making it to the "arena" part with the tank vehicle thing, but I never for the life of me figured out what to do there and the game just ended there for me, always. I never actually how so close to the end of the game I was lol.
Anyway, thanks for this, brings me back good memories. The atmosphere and the sense of being 'lost' in an alien world is very well done for a SNES game, very few on the system had a similar atmosphere for me, save for the likes of Super Metroid and Link to the Past.
27 years later I finally found this game. I remember playing the steam tunnel level once and no one knew its name. My inner child is happy.
Epic! So emotional!
I was 11 or 12 when I played this, absolutely loved it. The music and sound effects really bring me back holy cow.
I've just uploaded a remastered version of the SNES intro theme from Another World to my channel. Come check it out.
If ever a game could use a modern remake, this would be one I'd love. Great game. Will never forget LFCK.
loved this game , I thought that pistol shield thing was so cool.
This was awesome back in the day. It reminded me of another game that, for me at the time, felt very similar. Had to do some searching but the game was called Flashback.
This game took me weeks and weeks (and playing "sick from school") as a kid to finally beat. I remember that first ride on the dragon...such nostalgia. I knew it was finally over the second I heard the music after that last teleport.
I've just uploaded a remastered version of the intro theme from Another World to my channel. Come check it out.
OMG!! Tks!! Fantastic this game!
I had this mixed up in my memory with flashback until today. Now looking at it, it's totally understandable.
This game is an early masterpiece by Eric Chahi.
I played it when I was a little kid, it was way ahead of its time.
They could make a movie out of this.
Such a hard brutal game. Loved playing it as a kid. Never got to beat It though.
Thanks So Much !

Apparently, shooting that chandelier allowed your alien friend to get free of that crawlspace he'd been trapped in...
...am I the only one who's slightly perplexed by that?
To be fair, I didnt even notice
Yeah, that didn’t make sense to me either.
Nothing made any sense in this game other than...hey do this one weird thing in order to get by something.
“Danoshita!!! Danoshita!!” [Tap on shoulder] “My Poobah!!” I can’t help but utter this at times.
Before Dark souls... There was "Out of this world"
obviously you never heard or played Super Ghouls n Ghost
@@THEREALGAMEMASTER-gz5xg holy crap, this was my comment a year ago. 😂
Anyway yes I've played ghouls n ghosts.. But what I was talking about is in terms of mobility and limitations and play styles . Ghouls and ghosts is a fast paced platformer hence to why you have a character who can jump, double jump, shoot projectiles at an instant. Yes granted it's a very difficult game, but the still style is different. Out of this world is slower paced. Your character has more realistic parameters when in comes to mobility. Your weapon can run out of ammo. You have to constantly slow yourself down to plan your next move. It's also not a typical side scroller like GnG. You have to explore maps and back track a lot as opposed to just scrolling right.
(There is a spin-off game from GnG called Demon's Crest in which you use Firebrand the demon from GnG. One of my top 5 SNES games. I suggest you check it out. It's really fun.)
@@THEREALGAMEMASTER-gz5xg , what about Chakan (Genesis)?
@@peterpedro5655 chakan was hard but nowhere near Hard as Super ghouls n Ghost
@@reddjustaguy1598 I already did I download the emulator its amazing game
This is the version I grew up with, I remember hearing the dev didn't like the music added in but I can't imagine the game without it myself, love everything about this game, it helped inspire me to make games myself, and also when I was a teenager I made a flash animation for Newgrounds called "Another Wario" and you can imagine what that was about 👀
This game's intro was waay ahead of it"s time
some of these animations is dope
my best friend found this for me omg i used to watch my dad play this all the time!!
@6:51 its been a lifelong ongoing joke between my siblings and I to say “abooshka abooshka! Abooshka! MY TUBAAA” LOL
This game blew my mind as a kid
One of my favorite snes games. Way ahead of its time
Years later I understand how special this game was. Edit: end is creepy as hell 😵💫
This game was hugely ahead of its time. It’s amazing what they could do on game cartridges.
Core memory activated I really didn’t understand this game all I remember was renting it from major video and playing till bedtime
i really love the string samples of the intro theme...
Loved this game
When I played it for the first time, I found it difficult at first to understand what to do, but eventually I managed to get to the end.
Now that I see it again, I didn't think it was short, only 30 minutes.
What you have just shown is impressive. I can't imagine how long it took to finish this game in less than thirty minutes, it's funny because I could never finish this game and you made it look too easy.
Who ever recorded this must of put some hours into it wow super solid I love it!
great memory unlocked
I beat this game in 4th grade, still proud haha! Great game! Very creative
This was the 1st game I ever bought for the super nintendo back in 1993 Back then I remember seeing the graphics for the 1st time blew my mind away as a 10 year old boy Good memories
Kind of reminds me of Kaizo games where it's a puzzle of finding out what the situation/devs asks you to do in what specific order to proceed. Although it does not allow any kind of flexibility in how you solve it, you do funnily enough feel immersed in becoming that protagonist who avoids doom by a small margin. Not a single line of dialogue spoken to each other but I know I can trust that big guy to help me out every time. Great duo
I remember feeling really accomplished when I finally beat this game as a teen!
I enjoyed so much playing this game as a kid. Well, as a teen actually. Didn’t remembered that it was so short!😅 Some of the scenes were a nightmare trying to figure out how to move forward
Great videoGame, innovative in its time. Awesome 👍
I have a book coming out October 20th called Hostile World that is heavily influenced by this game and a movie called Fire In The Sky. You should be able to find it on Amazon in October.
Nice. I'll keep a lookout for it.
Does anyone know if the music starting at 7:02 is specific to this port of the game? I recently picked up the 20th Anniversary version and no matter what music/sound option i go with, this awesome dramatic track is absent
This game confused me so much as a kid because your friend looked the same as the enemies, so i never knew who was gonna shoot me.
I rented this game a few times back in the day but never got far. It still animates really nice.
One of the hardest games ever made. But all us kids cried at the end, and decided to befriend any aliens we should meet.
this is art
Me and brother still say “alostop” this game was amazing. Like a movie
over 3 decades layer and he still is trying to get back home.
To this day I tap my friends in the shoulder and when they turn around I point forward and say, “mitesuwa!”
The SNES version is far superior to all other versions, even the 20th Anniversary edition.
What?
beter than the amiga?
@@oele Better than all of them. The reason I prefer it is because the SNES slowdown makes it more cinematic and it's got the amazing music when action occurs, no other version that I've seen has that music in it.
I prefer the Sega Cd version myself. Maybe thats just me.
Idk if gameplay wise if its the best port, but it does have my favorite version of the soundtrack. The piano work is sublime and perfectly suited to the atmosphere
This was a great game and still is.
Just played it for the first time yesterday and it aggravated tf outta me🥴😂
20 years later, I finally see the ending...I remember saying aloud "A FUCKING DRAGON?! THAT'S IT??!"
I always thought this game a was a fever dream I use to play it slot as a kid but no one in my family remembered this game or even knew the name I'm glad I got the chance to see this game to the end now at least
Funny how Nintendo censor alien girl butt crack but leave the violence intact
For a real treat play this game on the Sega CD. It looks and sounds better plus you get an extra game. Other than that this looks great on the SNES.
Was mind-blowing for a console-only kid. Everyone says how cryptic and difficult, but we managed to beat it as a Blockbuster rental over a weekend with no internet or guides, with trial and error.
Now that's impressive. I had the luxury of time. Those caverns almost made me quit a few times but i wanted to see more so I kept going!
My brother had this when I was little. I always tried to play it but couldn’t get past the second level. Still a lot of good memories trying to beat it though 😅
One of the best games ever!
