  • This 2010 Nissan Rogue has been having an intermittent leak in the EVAP system. Let's see if we can pinpoint the leak, and even fix the problem without going to the dealer for parts!

    At time interval 7:05 the vent solenoid is commanded ON so the valve is closed. Ivan then uses lung capacity to determine if the valve does seal. This is a "quick and dirty" test but the problem is that you are apply far more pressure to the valve than originally designed. Typically the evaporative system valve devices are intended to hold about 1 - 2 inches of vacuum. That equates to about 0.5 - 1.0 psi negative pressure. If more positive pressure builds up in the system, it is designed to open and prevent an over pressure condition in the fuel tank.
    A better test would be to seal the inlet side of the valve port which connects to the tank. Attach a hand held vacuum gauge and apply about 1 - 2 inches of vacuum. Command the purge solenoid ON to close the valve. Watch the vacuum gauge and if it holds for several minutes then it is good. In a sense you are doing a valve leak down test and that is what the ECM (electronic control module) is doing to verify the integrity and proper operation of the valve.

      A young, healthy, non smoker- blow into a gauge and find out. Using an aneroid barometer, equipped with a mouth inflation tube, maybe 2-3 inches on the scale where sea level atmospheric pressure is about 30 inches of mercury. I think a top figure for the average person would be about 1.5 psi.

      1.5psi seems to be a good number. Hey! That's what EVAP smoke machines are rated at! So the human blow test is actually perfect for EVAP components. That's cool!

    Very similiar to the toyota VSV valves. The toyota vsv's will create a ridge and actually get crusty and stuck. Moisture/water will make the piston/cyl crusty in cooler months. After replacing a few I now Fluid Film the internals on new ones and I've had no failures on the new ones yet.

    I've torn quite a few of them apart, the failure are mostly due to the plunger dragging in the hole, from the coil melting the plastic, or rust depending on design. of course sometimes the seal is worn/dirty and if they don't seal 100% you get the leak codes set, it will be back on for sure :)

    It's definitely worth a shot. I can't help but feel incredibly wasteful when an entire component needs to be chucked because of one issue that can often be solved with less than a few bucks in parts.

    If you can get some more time out of the old one you'll be ahead. I like trying to fix things on the cheap so I can but more tools. By the way, replacing the fuel pump on my 98 Chevy truck fixed the fuel pressure drop. I'll have a video late this week (if i get my computer back from the shop). Thanks for the support.

    Ivan I agree WD40 is an magic WaterDisplacing fluid, but it does not last long enough, so I use a silicon/teflonspray afterwards and that will last forever. Nice music by the way, regards.

    These plastic EVAP components are often revived by a soak in warm soapy water and use of a long bristle thin paint brush to gentle coax the dirt out from the internals. After drying I tend use silicon spray as a lubricant and a thin smear of silicon grease on the mating surfaces of gas tight seals; cotton ear buds are great at getting into difficult to reach places. Due to age or after minor collisions the carbon dust in the EVAP canister can come loose and effect the purge valve performance, but the repair is just the same as the vent valve.

    Those vent valves fail very often I work for Nissan. also your wife's truck may have a TSB that applies to it for the CVT transmission. Just check the CVT a and CVT b PID's in the transmission module. They should be 0. If not than there may be a CVT failure in your future.. The TSB is to replace either the trans or The Valve body and add an external grill mounted cooler. This may also be covered under warranty. The warranty on a lot of those I think may have been extended to 120k mi..
    If the CVT count is high let me know I'll see if I can get you a copy of the bulletin.

      Well at 182k miles she's got her money's worth out of this one! I always check the CVT fluid quality life with the scanner. It shows about 2/3 used...should I change it soon? Still looks clean on the dipstick.

      motoYam82 you can change it, sure won't hurt it. If you do change it use Nissan ns2 and set the fluid level using PID ATF temp count @ 160. It takes some time to get it to 160. I think the PID is "atf temp count" or "fluid temp count". Just make sure it's at 160 or very close to it when you set the fluid level on the dip stick this must be done right its very sensitive.. But the main thing to keep an eye on is the CVT A and CVT B PID's.. Those are over temperature indicators.
      At 182k miles shes doing good.

      I believe the Nissan recommended "CVT deterioration" number for fluid replacement is 200000 in the scan data not miles. But i usually just recommend it every 60k miles. Be sure to reset it when your done.

      200000? Wow! Right now it's only at 65000 and I was going to let it get to 100000, which at this rate would be 600k miles lmao

      Yeah.. Nissans recommended interval is nuts. I can't say I have seen any failures due to fluid neglect. So maybe it's plausible but My OCD won't allow me to run fluid that long.

    That "part 2 is coming" indicates it didn't work LOL.
    When I do stuff on my truck I feel so free to do whatever I want and do as many Mickey Mouses as I can. But I don't touch my wife's car, not even to change a tire, one tiny mistake and I'll have her bullying me for weeks. LOL!!!!!

    I used to change those all the time when I worked at the Nissan dealer. They have a high failure rate. That is the updated style though so not as bad. The old style had the solenoid in a plastic case and they would rust internally and swell up and crack LOL.

    Listen I have a suggestion for you to change direction a bit in shooting your great vids. Which will definitely boost your channel big time forward.
    There's something extremely important about fixing cars that nobody on RUclips has ever come across at least as professional as u.

    However, I noticed that you have thorough knowledge in wiring diagrams.
    But I tell you the truth, at least 90% of us as technicians don't know most of the symbols and arrows on those diagrams and what they mean. !!
    Thus, i strongly suggest that you start planning to shoot a 2-series special just on wiring diagrams.
    With plenty of examples of course, specially on SUV Ford, GM, and Japanese Lexus.
    Believe me such tutorial videos sky rocket views almost instantly.
    Just look after what information people need the most.
    Maaan I really love your work approach and thinking process. So I thought I should share this with u.
    Maaaan, I never missed any of your publications.
    Keep up the high spirit. We just love u

    Off topic question Ivan. Your Rogue with 185,000 miles, does it still have original CVT and engine? My buddy bought a 2012 2.5L with CVT and only 37k a couple of months ago and the CVT whines on 3,000 RPM's and up when passing on highway or on an steep incline. The fluid level, condition and smell seams good. Dealership said this is normal for the Whine, but my 2011 Altima with same engine and CVT at 60k is quiet as can be. No drivability issues or codes. With all the horror stories about CVT's on the Web I fear it could be early signs of failure and I want to make sure it's covered under the 2 years warranty we bought before it expires.       Oh yeah her Rogue sounds like a freaking chainsaw if you give it the beans, but it's been that way for a long time and isn't getting any worse as far as I can tell. Drives great and averages 28mpg summer/25mpg winter :)

      Awesome thanks Ivan. I wonder if it's because the rogue doesn't have a transmission cooler lines going through the radiator causing it to get hotter? My Altima has cooler lines that have a bypass through the radiator to help cool the fluid. So you have original engine and tranny in your still? Thanks!!

      Yeah all original drivetrain. I think the CVT is cooled by engine coolant if I'm not mistaken...should be a more effective way than just an oil cooler.

      My Rogue has whined since the day I got him, but it's not gotten one bit worse since. And he always fusses up any incline and 'ticks' when it's really, really cold outside until he warms up, but I think that's just how Rogues are! I bet your friend will really like his :)

    Hey Ivan, One time I tried that approach on a '98 accord which has a similar setup, then at the end realized that it was leaking on the housing cover not the pintle.

    Order your body panel clips off amazon, you can get a kit that has most every clip you will run across for 15-20$ that comes with the necessary tools to use with the body push pins.

    On a more serious note, I effin hate EVAP codes. I just finished up an Expedition that refused to pass the in-bay test even tho I had fixed it. Very frustrating trying to verify a fix like that. Dern Ferds!

    Hey bud, i replaced the selinoid like you were showing but now it is leaking out of the frame? There is a hose from the canister that go into the frame, smoke comes out of the hole in the frame rail, any idea, its a 2015 rogue

      Solenoid has to be commanded CLOSED during the smoke check :)

    You can buy a bag of 100 "push rivets" on eBay of a couple of buck. Get 3 or 4 sizes. You might want some "Christmas tree" plugs while you are shopping.

    What's the name of the part he's banging on at 5:26? It's like a dirt shield for the evaporator canister? I went to remove the solenoid and that part was so rusted that it literally fell off. Trying to find the name to buy it and replace it.

    Hello there. Do you happen to know how 2012 nissan rogue transmission cooler is connected? My comes from cooler into engine,not to a radiator. I wanted to flush the system but its not possible. Please let me know if you happen to have the answer . Thank you

    Anyone knows what voltage is applied on the Evap solenoid by the computer? Is it 12 volts or lower like say 5 volts. Would like to test the Evap solenoid off the vehicle.

      Foxelli rechargeable. It's great, but battery life is kind of short and takes a while to recharge. Definitely buy two or three to cycle them out!

    Had the same problem with my ex-wife's vent valve, cleaned it with gas and sent her and my ex-mother in law on their way......to heaven!!!

    This works on a small amount of vacuum drawing out- not high air pressure blowing in.

      Yes- the barometric pressure of around 12 psi (at sea level) is holding your guts in, and pushing on everything.

    Народ! Если у вас горит ошибка U1002 то проблема в этом клапане вентиляции абсорбера (это который свободно открытый) находится на самом абсорбере.
    Нашел эту инфу на американском сайте, и клапан оказался не рабочий, всегда открытый!
    И когда мотор хочет продуть абсорбер клапан не закрывается и всасывает лишний воздух с атмосферы.

      @@joshuamcmichael4121 That's great to hear. Thanks for sharing. I have a 2017 and I canceled my $2500 dollar extended warranty because I thought the tranny would probably quit after the warranty expired at 100K miles anyway. Anything else I could probably pay for out of pocket.
