I washed mine before unraveling, after I deconstructed I washed them in a mesh bag.

Before unraveling is a good idea. I bet it took ages to dry though! Lol I’m not that patient 😂

I dried it both times in dryer no issues. I dried undone ones also after unraveling in a pillow case.

    Wow! That’s brilliant.
But, please please please reconsider shipping items with dryer sheets. The fragrance makes me sick to my stomach, and I dread receiving anything that was stored that way. Once that fragrance attaches to the fabric, it’s almost impossible to remove.

@@lisascenic I don’t actually send them with dryer sheets. I hate the smell too and the fragrance does the same thing.
I think I was saying it as an idea if someone didn’t like the smell of them.
Or if it was an idea I had for myself, I very quickly nixed that idea upon further thinking on it lol.

Thanks for sharing - I've had two of these rugs for quite a few years and had no idea how to deconstruct them.

Oh my gosh! I have two of these in my stash from years ago when Gypsy weekend bags were popular. I didn’t realize that’s how they were made, or in your case come apart. 😂 Thanks for sharing.

Look up "boro," "sashiko," "visible mending" "slow stitch," "kantha" and "kawandi." You'll find some great projects that use scraps of materials and a simple running stitch to create beautiful clothes, accessories, quilts and more.

Sari strips are usually kind of expensive and difficult to come by. They are used in many different crafting and sewing projects. There has been a trend recently of people taking apart these rugs to have an instant and cheap stash of beautiful fabrics!
