I came over from Kim's channel to see this wonderful project you are working on. I am also a textile and paper person but have never woven. I do sew, quilt, knit, crochet, bead, do all types of paper crafts, etc. I'm going to have to go and see if our Dollar Trees in Florida carry these rugs, you have me very curious now. Can't wait to see what you do next. Vicky
Hello and welcome! Ah you are a maker after my own heart and another Textile Birb! 💕💕💕😁. I have a theory that textiles and junk journalling has a LOT of overlap … far more than one imagines. I am curious to know if dollar tree carries them too. Do update if you can! I would love to see if there are variations in the make process.
Okay, I'm so ridiculously excited about chindi rugs now!! Which dollar store did you find these at? I'm not even going to wait for your answer, I'm totally leaving my house when I finish this comment to hit alll my dollaramas and great canadians. Sounds like you and I are birds of a feather (see what I did there, RedParrot? LOL). My 2 favourite crafts are papercrafting and textiles/fibres. And I'm super curious about how things work and how they're made too, not just in art, but also science. Thank you for the awesome video, I learned a lot! I do a lot of fibre/textile crafts, but weaving isn't one of them (yet), so your info was super interesting. I may jump on board #textilethursday someday, but not until I move and get to unpack my whole stash.
I AM SO HAPPY YOU ARE A BIRD LIKE ME! Dollarama. I checked Walmart today and no luck. YOU HAVE TO PLAY TEXTILE THURSDAY OMG!!!! Yessssss ! I have spent the morning taking apart the two rugs and washing them. Some notes … dusty as in dust bowl after a season of dust storms … not just a light hint of dust. This dustiness makes total sense for the manufacturing process. Also. I have hit (only) two bits of massive dye bleed. One was a green and the other a red. I do NOT need another rug but I think the holy grail of deconstruction would be a plump rug made with highly decorative fabric. I have a thin decorative and the plump rug is a lot of plain fabric. You must tell me how you get on. 💕💕💕
@@imagesbykim hahaha you’re lucky it’s currently freezing rain, that’s all I’m saying. 😂 You watch, your one dollarama in Sussex will have them while none of the dozen dollaramas in my area will. 😂
@@redparrot9489 more helpful info, thank you! I’m confident the rugs will arrive in my dollaramas soon, fingers crossed. I have a pretty extensive fabric stash. 😂. I can’t wait into I have enough room to display it all!

Well! I think I ought to check out @halfasscrafter since both you and Cindy speak so highly of her. 🥰💕🥰. Weirdly, my last trip to the dollar store included the chindi rug aisle. Nothing suitable. I learned a rag rug technique about a year ago - created a rug or two but, as we crafters do, set it aside and found paper to play with.... SO ---- while it may be whack-a doodle, I'm thinking I may want to do this........ Funny I was thinking it and then watched you talk about it. I'm here for the whack-a-doodle!!

Loved the video however please note that while $5 dollars is not a lot for Canadians or Americans it a lot money in India, it’s 415.25Rs. Indians *will* take exception to saying this is very little money as it’s being judge by western standards and can be considered extremely offensive. To westerners those are “scraps” however they are not treated as such in India and are generally part of a much larger process and are sold by weight. Also, Indians are highly industrious and creative and “scraps” are used in a variety of ways as nothing is ever thrown out. India recycles more than any other country in the world and has been for over 5 millennia, before _recycling_ was “cool”. A good anthropologists will caution people not to judge cultures by their own standards, it’s imperative that cultures are understood within the confines of its own culture.
Hi! New sub from Kim’s channel. Great video, i remember when all the junk journalers where out buying those rugs. I have a few in my home already, they are so tactile(?) im looking forward to catching up on more of your videos!
Hello and welcome! Thank you for subscribing. 😊💕 I can only imagine the initial wave of chindi excitement. It comes through in the videos I have watched - almost all from about a year or so ago. The rugs are so interesting and lots of textile variation. The idea might have petered out because of the effort required to undo, wash and neatly store. I have undone two now and I have much to report on this coming Thursday. 💕💕💕
Kim was right--this was SO interesting!! I tried taking apart a chindi type rug a couple of years ago but the material was VERY unsatisfying. Much of it was very heavy like hoodie material. As you said, not all chindi are created equal. I'll try again. I don't understand the gnome thing either. Just say no to gnomes. :D
Hello and welcome! It’s so nice to have you here. 💕 what a BUMMER experience to have hoodie material as the chindi weft material! As soon as I bought the second rug, I realized the level of variation that exists. Hoodie fleece is the third kind. It is well worth purchasing these “live” so one can inspect the make up of the material. I laughed out loud at just say no to gnomes. 💕💕💕🤣💕💕💕 Thank you for watching. 💕
Hi, I came over from Kim's channel to take a look at this "new to me" way of getting fabric for our projects. I do have a couple questions: first, what and how do you wash the material, in the washing machine or hand wash, and what detergent do you use? Secondly, can you use vintage rugs for this? I think I've seen some of the rugs and my old homeplace, could I use these, or would you recommend new ones. Oh, and my purpose would be to use in junk journaling. TIA.
Hello and welcome! Yes - that’s the expression - new to me! New to me too! You ask EXCELLENT questions! Would you mind if I answered these in this next textile Thursday? What a great question! I was around when the internet was born and it was the Wild West of having fun handles. I was signing up for something and needed a user name. I am not a fan of having unconstrained options. I looked around and saw a watercolour that I did that turned out decent. It was a redparrot.
