  • Recent studies have found potential cancer-causing materials in some of the components used with artificial turf. I want to make more of a case for why artificial turf isn’t the best solution as a replacement for natural grass.

It’s more dangerous to have real grass IF you put pesticides/weedkiller/fertilizer….. all of those have found links to cancer at extreme levels for golf courses and communities that surround them. Best option is to just let it grow wild.

No its still not as dangerious. The artifical turf has forever causing cancer chemicals in it that never breakdown for 200 years. There are natural pectesides that can be used on real turf grass

Artificial turf is actually not a safer playing surface than regular grass for athletics. I work in sports medicine, and it actually is more dangerous. Increases the risk for ligament injuries, and concussion. I’m sure the artificial turf companies promote it as safer but it isn’t at all. Great video Jimmy!

studies have found that radio waves cause cancer...have you stopped using your cell phone? the poison is in the dose...almost everything has toxic chemicals or substances that in large doses will cause cancer (pesticides in all fruit (organic or not), vaccines, etc.). so don't be a person that lacks critical thinking skills and simply thinks "chemicals bad..."...

I'm still deciding between real grass and artificial turf because most modern grass doesn't store carbon as well as wild grass. Modern grass also takes up more water resources. Water is expensive in some places, and sometimes there are prolonged droughts. Some climates are not meant for grass.
However, artificial turf is plastic and produces microplastics, which are known carcinogens.
I am not sure which one is a net positive.

    • @JimmyLewisMows
      @JimmyLewisMows  Месяц назад

I will say that many newer grass varieties are being developed to be more drought tolerant. Search for TWCA. I have my own seed mix product and I require the turf varieties in that mix to meet that standard. Grass also produces oxygen.
To each their own. I’m not going to tell you which to choose. But I do feel a responsibility to teach others what I’m learning and know, especially with water conservation practices. It’s important to manage resources.
Thanks for watching and for your comment.

We have some ground bees in a dirt patch here. Apparently these are very good for soil quality so it got me wondering.. How does using turf or even crop covers help the environment? Can't imagine it's good for bees to have a layer of synthetic material blocking their tunnels. Thanks for the video

There’s a place for real grass and a place for synthetic turf. What most people outside the industry don’t know is that all the “toxic” synthetic turf from sports fields, mostly comes from the rubber infill that’s used on sports field applications. The second area of toxicities from synthetic turf is coming from cheap, Chinese and foreign turf. Loaded with forever chemicals/Pfas In which most of these articles cover.
But if you’re using an American made product, that’s free of pfas, chemicals and even made with food grade, mircoban plastics that’s 100% non toxic to pets and people, then all that “turf is toxic” stuff goes out the window.
We install real grass and synthetic turf. We do a lot of installs for homeowners with dogs and their yard is either too small to maintain real grass with their dogs and/or children’s play traffic or they simply can not keep the real grass alive bc the space receiving a lot of use and dog urine killing the lawn.
Most of these warnings are scare tactics from cities that are starting to lose money due to homeowners not having to water their lawns, and landscape companies that are losing business to turf installations bc they don’t offer or know how to do synthetic turf installation.
Personally speaking, we are a top quality installation company and focus on top notch materials and installation methods, and only use 100% American made turf with zero forever chemicals, lead, PFAS and equipped with microban technology. The best and safest turf available. Don’t hire companies using cheap foreign material to make the most money or to accommodate cheap customers.
Real and artificial both have pros and cons, just bc real grass is natural doesn’t mean it doesn’t have its own negative environmental impact. Fertilizers, pesticides, excess nutrients that your pets and children play on as well as seeping down to the water table. You just have to “pick your poison” so to speak, what benefits you and your family household in the long run. You can always go with top quality American made, PFAS free turf, or real grass and use as natural as possible supplements for it. If you aren’t using quality products either way, it could be bad.

True. I ain't biased either way but some people read about correlations from scientific papers/journals and go out in the world and spread misinformation in the name of causation.
