RTFM: *looks at monolith* "what are you gonna do, this is a rectangle, meh :/" Also RRTFM: *looks at black starbase "I love this cube, this is just a cube but oh its so nice"
The black interceptor which RTFM rated bottom 5 reminds me of the classic Cobra Class Trader from the 80s Video Game Elite. That was way back on the Commodore 64, in the almost unimaginable past, when games were on cassette tapes, and the ships were line drawn! But nonetheless the Cobra (and Elite generally) was ultra cool at the time. A single fighter craft that could serve you as a rogue trader in illegal goods, a free booting pirate or an ice-cold bounty hunter. Although this was your starter ship, it could be converted into a deadly killing machine when upgraded with beam or military lasers, an extra power plant for super shields and a full complement of missiles. Indeed the Eclipse upgrade system reflects this 'build your own ship' aspect. I even remember there being a fun fan fic story to go with the game...
I like the yellow dreadnaught. It feels sleek and deadly. Kind of has a sting ray design. But just goes to show that different people like different designs.
I've recently entered the board game hobby and this channel has been a great asset to building my collection. Thanks RTFM. Can you / anyone let me know the hosts name? Excellent content. I'm holding back a while after getting Spirit Island; Scythe; Cosmic Encounters; Empires of the Void 2; and hoping to get Twilight Imperium; Eclipse; Nemesis; Project Elite in the future. Appreciate this Eclipse model review, and it's a good sign that even the low ranking 'meh' models look good to me. Some of them took Warhammer Battlefleet Gothic inspired, which is great, as Warhammer is what got me into board games.
I’ve been painting my New Dawn ships and they look SO MUCH cooler now. A paint scheme can definitely change the whole feel of these models. I will be keeping my 1e ships as my terran ships to go with Second Dawn.
My rankings would be: 28 - Blue starbase (flimsy) 27- red starbase (too small) 26- red interceptor 25- blue interceptor (incoherent with the rest) 24- black interceptor 23 - white starbase 22- red cruiser 21- blue dreadnought (wings are too big, front is weird) 20- red dreadnought 19- green dreadnought 18- yellow cruiser (too small for a cruiser) 17- white interceptor 16- blue cruiser 15- green cruiser 14- black cruiser 13- orbital 12- white dreadnought 11- yellow starbase 10- Monolith 9-white cruiser 8- black dreadnought (fucking menacing) 7- ancients 6- green interceptors 5- guardians (love the a-symetrical design) 4- green starbase (beautifull detailing, nice homage to classic UFO's) 3- Yellow dreadnought (ok, hear me out. Imagine this thing apearing out of warp space and hoovering in front of you. the cockpit window in the front betrays just how huge this thing is. Also it's design is unique and unlike what i've seen in other media) 2- yellow interceptor (could be straight out of star trek) 1- black star base (basicaly what pushed me to buy this game)
A friend of mine did a light gray wash on all of his ships which really helped the details to pop out. I loved the yellow ships, especially the dreadnought because the details on the front depict a fiery dragon face! To me, the cruisers look like yellow jackets, the interceptors look like a phoenix, and the star base looks like a hive of some sort. Otherwise, I loved your list and I totally agree with white having the best ships! Even though they are add-ons and not part of the base game, I'd love to see how you would fit in the Terran ships into your list. Those look really awesome as well! They are very Star Trekky, but I love them and hope to add them to my collection one day!
I'm not surprised that painting the ships make them look better, and I'm glad to hear that a wash brings out the details in the yellow dreadnaught. Unfortunately I can never be bothered to actually sit down and do it (also I borrowed this copy, so that might not have gone over well). As for the Terran models, I think all of the ships look pretty good, though not spectacular. The dreadnaught is my favorite of that bunch. I don't think it would've broken the top five, but definitely top ten. Maybe the interceptor would be top ten also. Not a huge fan of the starbase though. The design is just too plain for my tastes. I do think they all have great detail work though, even unpainted, so that's a plus.
Do you think paint schemes would change where ships are on your list? A mostly yellow dreadnought with some grey on sides and cockpit and a few red markings to make the few details pop? A blue interceptor with black cannons and wingtips? Or the like. Just curious.
RTFM, when playing Eclipse I will often swap out the Eclipse ships for TI ship designs of the same color. How would the TI ship design rank among Eclipse?
Most of them would be a little below the top five. I like them a lot, but they lack the character that my favorite Eclipse ships have. Destroyer might crack the top 5. Dreadnought is also very good, but not top 5. None of them are bottom 5 though.
The Red Intercepter reminds me of a Star Fury from Babylon 5. Reaction thrusters out on 4 spikes which gives them a lot of leverage for quickly turning the ship. By no means a low rating from me. Does it look like a nose? Maybe to some. But to me, it looks like a killer with quick reactions. ;-D Warm regards, Rick.
Art is art but upgraded fighter is best choice . the whole strategy of creating a fleet and development path in Eclipse is very interesting. Mistakes at the start, it's hard to make up for them on another tree, it costs much more then.
Funny, i agree with like 75% of your rankings, but some are really odd to me. Like the yellow dreadnought for instance i think is really cool. The blue starbase would be the only ship i truly dislike. Also i think that the blue interceptor (you number one spot!) doesn't really fit with the rounded aestetic of blue so this one too would be in my bottom list as well. To each his own i guess ;)
Yeah, it's all just about personal aesthetics. I knew some people would disagree with some of them, and the blue interceptor is different from the others a bit, but it's too cool for me not to love it.

I can't look at the monoliths and not hum the 2001 Space Odyssey theme!!!

Yep! To each their own. Glad someone likes it :D
Ok, this is top-quality content. I'll never play anything else but blue from now on.
Thank you for giving Eclipse a little love.
Very well done.
Thanks! Glad to do it.
A rectangle isn't always a rectangle. Sometimes it's a "looong cube".
For the blue ships, its always based on the fins for which side is the front. wings may look a bit weird but thats the way it is

This has to be the best order to do a list!

Haha, well I don't agree with all of your choices, I'd still say that's a good list.
1st black base same for me. I am picking black at my first game for this reason specifically (we'll all play humans)

I think the GCDS is actually supposed to be angled like this.
Maybe, but the original 3d images they show on their KS campaign had the arm pieces as being perfectly straight.

Probably a bit, but I've never gotten into painting minis. I don't have a very steady hand, so it's not something I've ever tried.

Oh buddy, that ain't a nose...
Agree, you can tell which way the blue ships face by which way the guns are facing.
@@FlangipanSausage I was referencing the red interceptor which clearly looks like a phallus.
Borg cube!
I want this game but Im broke and the complexity rating is through the roof
It is a complex game, but as for the cost, you can always try playing it on Tabletop Simulator first to see how you like it.
I regret not going in on this ks...
Cant get it until august
Hard disagree on blacks dreadnoughts. They are so menacing!
