- Watch Cindy Cloward of Riley Blake Designs create these cute and useful insulated bowl cozies. All you need is some cotton batting (so it can go into the microwave without melting) and some 10'' cotton pieces to make these great holders that keep your hands from getting too hot while holding a bowl of soup.

That was a very good presentation! You made me not scared to try this design for making bowl cozies. Plus I love that you do not need to be loud or have any gimmicks! Thank you.
I love it!!! I'm heading up to my sewing room right now!!! Thx
This is the first time I noticed your video. You explained what you were doing. Very helpful due visual problems. THANK YOU.
Seen a few lessons re these bowls. Yours looks the easiest by far! Thanks 🇦🇺
Aw! So cool! Gonna have to tryout the project!
Great video tutorial! These will make wonderful Christmas gifts. Thank you, very much!
Those are perfect for me and my cat for dry food. Also dinner buns and other stuff to hold in on the holidays.
Great instructions, easy to follow.
Since today is a holiday for me I'm sewing today--will be making a few of these soup bowl cozy's and adding homemade bag tags from fabric--another idea from your other video i just watched ! :) Thanks for the wonderful ideas!
You do a great job with tutorials, will check yours first in the future.
I like your quilts on walls
I just slit the darts and press open. It has less bulk that way for sewing. You did a good job with the video.
Hi there. Could you explain slitting the darts to me? Newbie here...
Everything has to be 100% cotton. The fabric, batting and thread. Otherwise it could be a problem in the microwave. I love this video. Very my speed!
Love it
Thank you
Sew fun! ❤️
I always cut the Wrap N Zap 1" smaller than the outer fabric so there's not as much bulk in the seams. and I always top stitch.
Somebody on RUclips posted that their bowl cozy caught on fire. I am getting ready to make some bowl cozies and want to be sure to use the right products. Most 100% cotton thread that I have looked at is mercerized. Does that make a difference? Thank you for your response.
Hello are you using a pressed/walking foot, on the machine to sew through that fabric., and batting. I just found your channel..thank you. For your video.
I make these in various sizes depending on serving bowls
It't my understanding that you use cotton batting with no scrim, otherwise you could have a fire in your microwave. At least that is what I was told when I got a pattern. These are fun to make and are great as gifts to non sewers. Always love your videos. Your voice is well modulated and you can hear with no problem. Well done!
I have heard the same thing, that is why I dont make them
What is scrim? Isn't a hundred percent cotton batting okay to use?
I don't know exactly what scrim is but I heard that it is in some cotton battings and can be flammable in the microwave. I use Wrap and Zap--supposedly scrim free.
When making these EVERYTHING needs to be 100% cotton. Even down to the thread.
@@trudythomas5036 If you use Wrap N Zap for the batting and 100% fabric & thread, there's no problem using them in the microwave. I have made many & I have used mine for years with no problem!
I have a suggestion, I just made a cozy for microwave TV dinner trays. It could be improved upon and I don’t have enough experience to design one! So here’s a challenge for you...
You mentioned that you took a 2" dart, then you said towards the end of the video you took a 2 1/2" dart? Which measurement did you actually make for the bowl shown in the end of the video. Thank you for showing how to make these cute bowl huggers.
Hi Irene,
I think she was referring to the different bowls she was using and that you might need a deeper dart depending on your bowl. So test it out on the bowl you will be putting in the cozy. Thanks for asking!
At 3:55 she says you can change this depending on your bowl. I make in three different sizes and for serving bowls and plates.
Can the backing be 85% Cotton ?
do i wash the 10 inch packs before using
THIS iS FOR TRUDY! Batting is easy to find with no scrim. I use the batting used for the baked potato bag. Any good quilt shop will have no scrim batting. Nice talking to you Trudy
Thank you
what is scrim?
I always use 100% cotton fabric , thread and batting . Otherwise the thread, fabric or batting could melt or even catch fire in the microwave. And I slightly round my ends to save time of pushing out pointed corners. Happy sewing
Can you use flannel as the outer layer? I don't know if flannel can go in the microwave.
flannel is usually made out of cotton
What sewing machine needle do you use, (Jean, Top Stitch, Microtex, Etc), to sew the pieces together & top stitch? I keep getting skipped stitches on the top stitch.
Joyce B, skipped stitches are caused by several factors. Too small needle for fabric weight, cotton vs polyester thread, too small eyelet size in needle holding thread on upstroke, too big thread size. I’ve made hundreds of cotton, fleece, flannel, polyester recycled shower curtain, recycled shirts, bandannas and PUL fabrics........ Adjust tensioning and needle sizes accordingly. I made a template from a cereal box with the darts notched out and it saves so much time with handling each panel. The best advice I can tell you is to just try to make one of these. People love it, keeps me busy. Polyester fabric and thread works too so don’t be afraid to use it. Before anyone out there gets upset at me, there’s a microwave potato bag made entirely from polyester fabric and thread! That’s right 100%. (Just don’t use recycled or new ironing board covers, that’s made with aluminized fabrics which will wreck a microwave oven!). Did I mention I had to buy a new microwave? Good luck, enjoy and have fun sewing!
@@deanhenthorn1890 Thank you so much for your help!! I know you weren't talking to me:) but as someone who is very new at this, you have made that process a little easier!! Some of us need all the help we can get:) I am off to check out needle sizes, and play with my thread! Happy sewing:)
I have been making these for years and selling them at craft shows. Even though made of 100% Cotton Materials I personally do not recommend placing them is a microwave for safety measures.
What is the seam allowance for sewing around the edge before turning? I don't think the video says.
What batting are you using please
Where did you buy your 10" square batting? Or did you just cut them to 10"? Also, where did you buy the 10" squares of material?
Hi Darlene, The fabric and batting can be bought at your local and online quilt shops. They were purchased as yardage and were cut to 10" squares.
Thank you for your reply. I did find 60 - 10" x 10" squares on amazon for 16.49, free shipping! I think that's a good price! You did a great job demonstrating how to make these. I've made 17 so far (all for gifts), they loved them! :)
I have watched many many videos on making these bowl cozy's but I am a bit confused about the batting. No one really talks about the wrap and zap batting, and little about any other kind of batting. I bought some wrap and zap and this stuff is much thicker than reg. batting, so my question is: would you still use 2 pc of batting? Thanks, Holly
Great question, Holly! In this video, we used a traditional thin batting. If your wrap and zap is thick, I would definitely opt to use one layer instead of two. Good luck!
Holly Gerstner I know this is many months later, but I’ve discovered that the packaged Wrap N Zap is thicker than the same batting sold by the yard on the bolt.
I made one with the Wrap N Zap and it’s really thick with 2 pieces and hard to sew at the seams. I’m going to try just one piece of batting as someone suggested and I think it will be much easier. The Wrap N Zap is very thick.
I am trying to make these with wrap and zap and omg...so thick..it's ridiculous! I guess I will take the apart and replace one side with just the pretty cotton square. I sure wish other videos would help in letting everyone know about the thickness of wrap and zap and possibly the brand of the THIN batting they use. Overall I like your video but would love for mine not to be so THICK.....
Good evening Madam. I want buy fabric and cotton batting. Can you show me ?
What kind of batting do you use. I ordered wrap n zap, very expensive, do you use something else?
You could use regular batting (that's what Cindy is using), or for more insulation, there's Lori Holt Heat Resistant Batting
Do you wash the material before you make the bowl cozy's ?
No, we did not wash the material, although you certainly could if you want to!
Marsha Garrett I.
My needle broke 3 times trying to tip stitch because of the bulk so I don't understand how to get past that point.
Try using a denim needle
try not topstitching in the bulk. I use the needle in the middle position and the end of the bowl at the side of the foot.
Amei os tecidos, que colorido lindo, mas achei a peca mole.
I made them the past 2 years for gifts. I made mine different.
oops, I only put batting on one side. oh well next time I will make sure I put batting on both pieces
Shouldn’t you use a cotton and not a poly batting?
Is batting the same as wadding?
Hi there! Yes, they are the same.
Do you recommend cotton or polyester batting for use in the microwave?
jholland211 100% cotton or bamboo. It must be natural products, ie no plastic or polyester as it could melt or even cause a fire in your microwave oven. Also no metal as it could cause a spark and again possibly a fire. By the use the batting without the scrim also, as it could catch fire as well.
You want a batting called Wrap-n-Zap, it is mocrowave safe. Not reg quilt batting!
Holli Jean Barnes I just made it one with the wrap n zap, it came out way too bulky, and it was difficult to sew through all the layers?!?,
Plate cozy 3:02
100 % cotton on all materials to avoid a fire in microwave
Ive got instabrite batting
Don’t use that it has metal fibers in it because it’s for hot pads. Use Warm n Cozy batting.
What fabric line is that?
Karen Wood
Use a needle suitable for denim, it Is a sharper, thicker needle. Great for sewing jellyroll rugs.
Enjoyed your video but not the music.. thanks
Your batting HAS to be 100 percent cotton with NO scrim!! Like wrap and zap. Otherwise you will have a fire in your microwave!!
I show a video Clare rowley saying use cotton batting will catch on fire 🔥 so she saying if you use 100% cotton batting it will catch on fire 🔥 what you think off that I use warm and natural cotton batting 100- cotton batting so have you use your in your microwave and what happen
Ive got a singer sewing machine
Batting and thread need to be 100% cotton also.
Scary, I put the cotton fabric in the microwave and it burned... I guess I'm not going to make bowl cozies.
It wasn't 100% cotton then or you didn't use 100% cotton batting and thread
My bowls look pretty bulky using two pieces of batting
Use cotton batting that’s about 1/8” thick. I make lots of these. A template pattern made from a cereal box makes repetitive motions so much faster than measuring each dart. I don’t even draw the line across the corner to corner, I just sew it and it’s quick enough.
My though exactly, i will be using a single layer of batting…more economical too so, its a win-win for me 🤩
That is not how you sew darts. Basic dressmaking design is to start at the wide end and sew off point.
These are old news.. I have made a hundred in years past. What I will say is that if you don't sew the top & bottom to each other, they won't wash well and will be a shrunken wadded up mess. One option is to only sew ONE diagonal on the fabric/batting, then sew the other diagonal AFTER the piece is fully finished. Or, you can trace a square or circle in the center of the finished bowl cozy and sew both pieces together that way.
If you are going to make a lot of them, make a template for your darts.. way easier.
Lastly, don't put them in the microwave. They can catch on fire, even when all cotton.
You haven't been making them right if yours are catching fire. I have been using mine for years without any issues. Check your materials.
They may be old news as you put it, but they still make great gifts for little to no cost.
Congratulations on being ahead of the bowl cozy trend.
Nothing should go in the microwave for longer than a couple of minutes as any can catch fire
Your presentation is beautiful. I had to give it a “thumbs down” because you did not specify that all materials for microwave use must be cotton.
@Kathryn Stalder --- In the instructions for this video it clearly states *cotton batting* and *cotton* material.
@Kathryn Stalder: She did! She mentioned that exact thing at the 0:24 mark.
My needle broke 3 times trying to tip stitch because of the bulk so I don't understand how to get past that point.
Do not cut the batting shorter than the top cloth. Use a heavier needle, like a size 16 or 18 to do the top stitching. I make a batch of tops, then dart them and combine the two halves together with a size 14 needle before changing to the top stitch needle. I make batches of 25 at a time!
Chandra Cox You can try using a walking foot if that helps.
