Still can't believe how young Tom Francis is, what an incredible performer! A well-deserved Olivier (and his performance at the Oliviers was one of the best ever done on show) and I can't wait to see them do it at the Tonys next summer.

From the moment Tom Francis's Joe took the camera as the steering wheel (the most in-your-face metaphor of the camera being an instrument of control), I knew this revival would be a ride.
And then there's the act II opening... one of the most thrilling experiences I had in the theatre.

Saw it twice in London. So different to the original and on that basis alone I can see why it’s not everyone’s cup of tea. However, for me I absolutely loved it. It’s a phrase too often used in my opinion, but on this occasion, it really did blow me away.

He sounds good and this song is quite the adjective word bomb. I remember even getting a t-shirt at intermission when it was last on Broadway that had “Twisting, Tempting, Headline, Jackpot, Frenzied, Brutal, Ruthless, Lethal” on the front and thought, “oh cool a lyric cheat sheet”
I remember seeing the last revival on Broadway with Glen Close reprising her role and no sets other than a large full orchestra onstage and I thought… “this is great, but damn this show deserves the full sets, costumes, car, next time Broadway does this” …And then we get this revival. Reminds me of the string of Sweeney revivals we got that were stripped down to nothing, before we finally got that fully produced revival recently.

Sure I came here to make my name
Wanted my pool, my dose of fame
Wanted my parking space at Warner's
But after a year, a one room hell
A murphy bed, a rancid smell
    Wallpaper peeling at the corners
    Sunset Boulevard, twisting boulevard
Secretive and rich, a little scary
    Sunset Boulevard, tempting boulevard
Waiting there to swallow the unwary
Dreams are not enough to win a war
Out here they're always keeping score
Beneath the tan the battle rages
Smile a rented smile, fill someone's glass
Kiss someone's wife, kiss someone's ass
We do whatever pays the wages
    Sunset Boulevard, headline boulevard
Getting here is only the beginning
    Sunset Boulevard, jackpot boulevard
Once you've won you have to go on winning
    You think I've sold out?
    Dead right I've sold out!
I just keep waiting for the right offer
    Comfortable quarters, regular rations
    24-hour Five Star room service
And if I'm honest, I like the lady
I can't help being touched by her folly
I'm treading water, taking the money
Watching her sun set... Well, I'm a writer!
L.A.'s changed a lot over the years
Since those brave gold rush pioneers
Came in their creaky covered wagons
Far as they could go end of the line
Their dreams were yours, their dreams were mine
But in those dreams were hidden dragons
    Sunset Boulevard, frenzied boulevard
Swamped with every kind of false emotion
    Sunset Boulevard, brutal boulevard
Just like you, we'll wind up in the ocean
She was sinking fast, I threw a rope
Now I have suits and she has hope
    It seemed an elegant solution
One day this must end, it isn't real
Still I'll enjoy a hearty meal
    Before tomorrrow's execution
    Sunset Boulevard, ruthless boulevard
    Destination for the stony-hearted
    Sunset Boulevard, lethal boulevard
    Everyone's forgotten how they started
    Here on Sunset Boulevard...!

I saw the original beck in the ‘90s and found it to be kind of dull. The overdone sets and Glenn Close’s over-the-top performance were entertaining, but the story lacked heart and intrigue. Is this second revival that interesting?? Hearing the monotonous "Sunset Boukevard" song in this stylized slow-mo preview makes me wonder.

I was lucky to see the one night production at the royal Albert hall in London a couple of years ago. The original with all the costumes and makeup that's sunset boulevard the music's fantastic but I do not like this new production when no one is in costume no atmosphere this is one of my favourite musicals but I would not go see this one.

  • @george_monks
    @george_monks 2 месяца назад +5

Saw this production and whilst the singing and orchestra were fabulous, the lack of sets and costumes were in my view a great shame
In my view, the cameras were just a gimmick.
I know I'm in the minority, but overall I didn't enjoy this production.
Sunset Boulevard is traditionally a costume and set rich production.

    • @shuttertalkpodcast
      @shuttertalkpodcast 2 месяца назад +2

For me, the lack of sets and introduction of cinematography really linked into the plot and furthered it instead of a feeling like a gimmick. I also personally love a new and inventive version of classic productions, especially if theyre traditionally big set and rich production style things. Props to Tom Francis and Jamie Lloyd.

I like the original Joe better, sorry, this Joe sounds like the kid he is, way too modern of a vocal style, he does not at all sound like a washed up chain smoking 30yrold struggling writer in 1950 who spent a decade living in a rancid appartment with a murphy bed hacking at a typewriter to no success.
The original Joe knew how to act when singing, with the original Joe you FELT his desperation and self loathing. I feel nothing for this Joe, he's wooden, completely flat without emotion nor personality, probably because he's too busy walking the street avoiding running into padestrians and staying in shot.
