That is way more chaotic than I thought it would be! Makes me even more impressed that they pull this off, with still lots of cars and people milling about. I have to imagine that the audio is still a recording for this portion, though, because in the theater you don't hear any of the background noise (cars, people, sirens, etc) - just a clean track, like the rest of the songs in-house. Any thoughts on that? Do you think they do an audio recording and then switch to live sound once he enters the theater again?

Thanks very much for the video. I saw the show last week without knowing anything beforehand about the outdoor part of the staging. Unpopular opinion: Frankly, the best part of the number was having the camera going BACKSTAGE right after intermission. Hey, I already know what it looks like outside. I walked into the theater from outside. While it was very original, it would have been just as amazing having the entire number backstage by the dressing rooms.
Thanks for doing this! I've been so curious to see the walk from the outside but not sure if I will get a chance to myself. Saw the show on Saturday night (had an amazing rush ticket in the fourth row orchestra!) and it was incredible! Though the audio did cut out a bit on his vocal for a few lines when he was in Shubert Alley!
@@theatreislife It was the in-person rush! Arrived at 6.45 and was nervous as was already 8th or 9th in line (the first people got there at 4.30 D:), but luckily most of the people in front of me wanted matinee and I wanted evening. Was especially thrilled with my seat as when I saw it in London I was in the top of the balcony :)
The backpack with the hard-line into the building is the wireless HDMI receiver off of the camera's wireless transmitter so that the system maintains both line-of-site to the camera, and a hardwire data connection back. The set-up on the cart is the audio package, both in-ears and microphone.
London he was out in the cold, snow, and rain. MANY rainy days. What I didn’t catch is you mentioned a plan A & B…but I might have missed the difference between two!?
Wow some operation! Was nothing like this in London and a much much shorter “WALK”. no crowd build up to watch either. I can see the crowds getting bigger here though as word spreads . Fabulous show….
Thanks so much for the video. I'm from the UK and heading to NYC this week to celebrate my 30th birthday. Hoping to catch 'the walk' after seeing it in London. A Wednesday it my best option - what time approx would I need to be there now that they're out of previews?
26:53 I spy Jason Schmidt of The Outsiders cast walking through after the scene passes by😁😍 LOL (Outsiders curtain time is an hour earlier, so it makes sense that he just finished his show around the time that SB would be starting Act 2!)
Some context would have been helpful. What is happening in the scene? What is the theatre audience seeing? Why the sequence outside the theatre? Where and how does this fit into the story?
What date is this?? I was there Oct 22-25 I stayed at the Marriot there and was in shubert quite a few times, I was at Death Becomes her, the roommate & little shop, I’m just wondering if we crossed paths! 😊 @theatreislife
Thanks for doing this!Watching that 1st walk in the evening, there were almost constant LOUD sirens. How do they work it so that Tom's singing can be heard over those?
The mic they use for this sequence is incredibly high tech, you can’t hear anything beyond him in the theatre. People call this production cheap but the $$$ they put into the tech is a ton AND IT SHOWS
I was in the balcony, third row from the top almost on the aisle and the view of the entire show was FANTASTIC (though if the person in front of you leans forward that view is immediately blocked)
I have more behind the scenes questions. What girl group is represented on the mirror in David Thaxton dressing room? I swear we also saw Jamie Lloyd during the staircase sequences. Is the director there every night?
The main difference is where the ensemble joins in! But there are other subtle changes like where they cross the street, how far they go into Shubert Alley
The choreography of it all is impressive, but it reeks of gimmickry. The walk in no way fits the story or the lyrics. The scene is supposed to show Joe reaping the fruits of his Faustian bargain. Walking through a city in the dark hardly does that. He just looks like an average embittered bourgy New Yorker.
Within the context of the entire production and the sequence that comes right before it in the show it makes complete sense and doesn’t feel gimmicky at all
I'm inclined to agree. I was prepared to give it the benefit of the doubt, I'd heard good things about the walk in London, and liked when they did it for the Olivier awards but watching this I'm just not sure it works on Broadway. Watching this video all I could see was the immense disruption it causes to pedestrians, to traffic, to the people seeing other shows on that block, not to mention all the extra security staff needed. If it was a one off thing then no problem, but given it's every night plus matinees for the run of the show (which could be some time) I'm just not sure it's worth the inconvenience it causes (even if it's just for a few minutes), given that, to be honest, I don't see how it does anything to enhance the story. I don't know, just my thoughts.
I would say this is the opposite of dumbed down and the entire production requires the audience to do a lot of thinking to understand all the layers and nuances going on here
@@theatreislife Exactly! I saw the production exactly one year ago today in London. Dumbed down definitely doesn’t describe it. It really does take some thinking and understanding. We came out of The Savoy Theatre completely blown away. There aren’t enough superlatives full describe the production or the atmosphere.
