      You’ve stated the obvious. But, you’ve not examined or explored WHY?
      Once Actors and Stage Management step outside the St. James Theatre to present/perform the Act II Opening Number, while the entourage - what? . . . exits the Stage Door, through that back alleyway, and makes their way North across 44th Street, and into and through Shubert Alley, then East on 45t psst One Astor Place to circle back South through Time’s Square to turn West on 44th to head back toward the St. James and, what . . . slip into the building immediately East of the St James to use that secret lobby pass door that opens directly into the SR backstage of the St. James, WHO, exactly is accepting the responsibility to ensure the SAFETY of Actors, SM’s, crew et al while they are outside the St. James alternately on property owned and/or leased, operated and maintained by the City, the Shuberts, the Minskoff, One Astor Place, the Times Square Alliance, the [NY] Department of Transportation, Carmines, and so on, and so on, not to mention the exposure to limousines and cabs and private vehicles and lots and lots of pedestrians?
      If, god forbid, an actor, crew SM, IS injured, you can be CERTAIN that the employers and Worker’s Compensation insurance are going to do their damndest to place blame on another party. And, if medical treatment and or disability kicks in, and, some provider grabs an Actor’s private insurance to pay for services, while those responsible dispute liability, when it finally DOES get settled, that Stage Manager, those Actors and crew who have been injured on the job, whose private insurance coverage paid for treatment. are going to be on the wrong end of a Subrogation demand. They will PERSONALLY be chased down to repay their medical insurance and:or disability provider.
      In the meantime, lawyers will have a field day and drag messy claims and lawsuits through the courts.
      How and when will understudies be safely rehearsed? They can’t be required to perform something they haven’t rehearsed.
      From a liability, disability, workers’ comp, medical /dental/ vision, unemployment insurance, and OSHA standpoint, this idea sounds very, VERY MESSY, and Really, REALLY EXPENSIVE!!!

    I was in the audience the night the Hell's Kitchen crowd ran into Tom (October 3rd)! I had no idea that that wasn't a normal occurrence other than the fact that we lost a few lyrics to Tom stumbling into people in front of him. It gave the whole sequence a much more comedic vibe than what I think they were going for, & every time something would go a little wrong the audience would laugh (including me). Seemed to us like a typical run of the show, but of course we were all so absorbed in the spectacle that we didn't know to look for mistakes. Absolutely cannot wait to go back.

    I’ve seen some really awful comments from people on SM, saying things like they wouldn’t move, they’ll sue if they get touched by the security staff. It’s baffling to me. I mean why wouldn’t you just move out of the way? If I saw someone coming towards me doing something that matters to them, regardless of what it is, I’d move aside and then step back and enjoy being able to witness whatever it is. Why cant people just be helpful? We move aside for people all the time, cos if we didn’t we’d all be bumping into each other. I don’t see how this is any different. Most of us will even move aside to allow tourists to take photos in tourists spots. Just be helpful people, it’s not difficult, you can see they’re doing something that is important to them, so just be helpful and be kind and step aside for those few seconds that it is going to cost you. I worry about society at times I really do. 😢

    On the person in the blue hat: from what I saw (wasn't there, but watched the video a bunch of times to try to figure out what was happening), it looked like, the first time that her group encountered the SB people, her group was heading south and Tom etc. were heading north. She got separated from the rest of her group when she ended up on the Junior's side of the alley and they were on the Hell's Kitchen side. Then Tom etc. stopped, and she tried to rejoin her group by crossing over just south of them, walking through the area they'd just vacated. Usually, that would be a good plan -- rather than getting in the way, walk behind them. But since that happened to be the point where they changed direction, "behind them" became "in front of them" while she was walking through that space. And the camera person was walking backwards, so she couldn't see where she was going, and it looked like there was someone who was supposed to be facing forwards and guiding her, but that person wasn't looking in the right direction to see the oncoming collision.
    There was also another video from last week where an older woman using a cane wasn't able to move fast enough to get out of the way, and they didn't collide with her, but she nearly fell over trying to step to the side that quickly. That wasn't in the alley, but on the sidewalk on 44th, right where they cross the street. Those points seem to be where most of the issues are coming up -- in London, everybody walking near him was walking parallel to his path. This route has several turns, where he's approaching people from the side, so they have a lot less warning and it's much harder to predict where he's going to be going next.
    What I see as a possible solution: first, have people stationed at BOTH ends of the alley, telling people that they'll need to step to the side. They can't really expect the people who've just turned into the alley from 45th to figure out what's going on when they see a whole crew of people walking toward them (and very possibly get momentarily blinded by the lights.) And second, a few minutes before the scene starts, put up barriers essentially creating three lanes in the alley. Stage doors and One Shubert Alley on one side, Junior's and passage through the alley on the other side, and space to film in the middle. They could similarly make a narrow lane for him on the sidewalk of 44th. (It seems like they're still experimenting with where he crosses the street -- I've seen videos where he crossed right in front of the St. James, and others where he crossed at the end of Shubert Alley.)

    • @callalily3994
      @callalily3994 Месяц назад +11

      (Basically, whenever I got to the theatre district, I have my entire route planned out ahead of time, where I need to take into consideration whether I'm using my walker or my wheelchair, where the curb cuts are, where there's good visibility around corners and where there isn't, which intersections get deep puddles when the snow melts, and so on. The path he takes there is definitely on the "Looks easy, but there are a ton of issues that you won't think about until you need to think about them" list.)

      @@michelleb.6877 good point. They once told me to use the one at Sardi’s, which meant crossing the street. Also, the curb at the end of Shubert Alley is a pretty useful place for a car or van to stop and drop off a disabled passenger before the driver goes to park in a less accessible garage. If someone’s in the middle of unloading a wheelchair, they can’t just move on a moment’s notice.

    This is interestingggg... I've had interest in seeing this musical since you've talked about it and didn't know about this aspect of the show so I'm sure it would be a little jarring to other theatre goers/people in the area who have absolutely no idea.
    I feel like I always have my guard up around all of midtown and if someone tried to push me out the way for something that appeared to just be a music video or something I'd be pretty pissed off. I wouldn't try to fight it and get in the way of the shot, but they also can't expect people to move in my opinion. Especially in the Times Square area where there are constantly people recording and trolling and pulling pranks and being aggressive, I think that's something they're just going to have to account for. But every little instance also shouldn't be like this social media backlash, that's a bit ridiculous.
    I think maybe if they put something like "filming in progress" signs visible throughout the alley that could help a little bit, but it's definitely going to continue to be an issue.

    Wow! I just saw this and I can't even BELIEVE that they do that live 8 times a week! Tom Francis should be crowned King of the entire world, because that takes BALLS and more calm under pressure than I can even imagine! Again, WOW! I hope to be able to see this production many MANY more times. I've seen 3 prior productions: Original Broadway, Original Toronto, and Glenn Close revival, and this version was LIFE CHANGING! I've been thinking about it for 2 days! I just flew to Mexico for 3 weeks and I can't wait to back to NY to see it again!
    Also, they need to have security (and barriers) that keeps people out of the way. Assholes have NO RIGHT to push past security barriers that are approved by the city. This production is incredible and people on the street shouldn't be able to ruin it!!!!

    • @oscarspm2251
      @oscarspm2251 11 дней назад

      Actually there’s no indication that ANY of this has been approved by the city. That’s the issue. To film, even straight to the stage, you need a film permit. No film permit exists currently for an open ended, 8x per week, disruption of 44th Street (it’s public record and searchable). So this is all done illegally and someone WILL get hurt at some point (simply based on frequency of the situation).

    While I love the execution of this second act opener, I'm going to agree with both sides here. Francis is absolutely brilliant, and the 'show within a show' aesthetic as usual propels this production. I think some more preparation + coordination realistically, and maybe revision of some aspects would make this less chaotic. I was coincidentally watching the footage of him walking around, and I was absolutely frustrated with how it's been done on Broadway. Only a handful of guys, and every passerby has no idea what's going on - and that's definitely on Jamie Lloyd and some others IMHO. Great video Mickey

There are definitely lots of people who wouldn't move even if asked politely. On the other hand, Times Square also has lots of tourists who aren't paying attention to the people around them, so that won't help either. The holidays will only make the crowds worse. I've heard other people call his scores overly simple and too reliant on pastiche when compared to Sondheim, Rodgers & Hammerstein, and other composers. Some have always hated his biggest hits like Phantom & Cats (esp after the 2019 movie). The US also hasn't had all of his musicals premiere here and has had fewer revivals of some of his biggest UK hits like Evita and Joseph. Tl;dr, some vocal American theater fans just don't like ALW and won't like anything he does. Maybe they're just Team Patti LuPone! 😆

That may be true for some of his shows, but I think those critics tend to ignore ANYTHING good he's written in favor of saying EVERYTHING is bad. The fact that this stunt is very attention-grabbing could also seem to those critics like just another gimmick, the one memorable moment in an otherwise boring ALW show. Eventually he proceeded out the backstage door onto 44th Street going east past the Helen Hayes Theater and Sardi's, onto what is Seventh Ave. at that point (but Broadway to us) then north one block to 45th Street where he turned west until he arrived at Shubert Alley on his left. He walked south through Shubert Alley and across 44th Street to the entrance of the St. James Theater and proceeded through the house and onto the stage. All the while he was singing "Sunset Boulevard!!" The entire audience went ballistic. I was near tears; for me it was homage to all the people, like myself, who had spent thirty years working backstage prowling those exact hallways nightly!!! Genius!!! And thank you.

None of the cast was visible near him at all because of how big the crowds are in NYC. IDK if it really works. Nov/Dec will not be possible there will be no where to walk. Might be better to be on the roof. Yelliing clear a path to a bunch of Americans in Times Square is not going to work and asking for fights. I also don't think people don't want to succeed its just looks messy and unorganized, they can think of other things that amaze people. I don't think people are "Rooting for it to fail." I once saw a small stage version of SB in London, where the actors currently off-stage (or rather stage right or left) played the musical instruments for the musical accopaniment and either used the instruments as props while playing a scene or handing them to other actors when going on stage. It was a bit bizarre at first, but I was really impressed how they had to cast people who could act, sing and play multiple instruments.
    Not sure though how I feel about a contemporary version of SB. I already hate it when operas are being staged in a modern context. Why they think they have to update the stageplay is beyond me, after all, you don't change the classical music to them either.

    Schubert Alley is between 44th and 45th rather than 43rd and 44th. It’s a minor detail, but that thoroughfare doesn’t cut between 43rd and 44th Street. Juniors is right across from Hell’s Kitchen at the Schubert-then they walk by both the Broadhurst (where Hills of California is) then the Majestic (where Gypsy is about to begin) . They even go by the Booth, where Patti Lipone is doing The Roommate with Mia Farrow. While you’re in the theater, you’re watching them walk by all of these current Broadway shows, which is pretty unbelievable.
    I was there tonight and I don’t know how they’re NEVER going to run into trouble. Nevertheless, I thought it was really cool, but I also don’t think it’s wholly necessary. Regardless, when I first got a notification for this video, I assumed you were going to be talking about the end where (SPOILER ALERT) Norma shoots Joe bc in the "original" or old timey staging, he falls off the balcony (right?). So I was like "this seems like a silly thing to talk about, but I'm curious about this show in general, so let's hear what Mickey has to say..." So to answer your opening question - I think some people just hate fun bc this whole topic is silly - people just need something to gripe about. I'm partly tempted to go see the show just to watch Tom Francis "shove" a pedestrian, lol.

    I was in the audience that night.
    They shut off the street with barriers for incoming traffic, but the crowds pouring out of the Shubert Theatre made me HELLA nervous for Tom. It was a really close call for him in regards to making it back in time to finish the song.

    The scene is amazing. I will say though that, as a New Yorker, I am that grumpy person who isn't going to move from a public space because a security guard is barking at me. I wouldn't disrupt things on purpose but I absolutely get people being annoyed.
