My mom is chronically depressed and doesn't love anything except her kids and Jo Koy. I took her to see him just after the pandy. He was awesome and she had a wonderful time. One of the few great memories I have with her. Much love to Jo and Neal.
I love how Jo-koy speaks of his son. And I love how he lets his life experience positively impact and direct his parenting. As for his son not being too interested in things - I think it’s because above all a child wants to know that they are loved and supported. And the fact that Jo-Koy has a healthy relationship with his child’s mother is so admirable and so positive for his son ❤
01:29:00 - 01:30:20 - This moment of realization by Jo... Such a gift from Neal... Truly... This is one of my FAVORITE interviews that I've seen Neal do... SO fantastic... Continued success, Jo and thanks, Neal!
I edited that Comic View Jo was on. That was my first real job out of college. Had him on my reel for a while. Saw him perform at an event in LA recently and he was great.
Neal, Trauma is Trauma. It is not overused. You are desensitized to its meaning because there are those who use it as a moral excuse. But I feel you are devaluating others experiences for the sake of your own apathy toward the issue. Try not to invalidate the trauma of others by saying its over used? Thank you.
Neal, I'm a big fan of the podcast and your work. I've been working with highly traumatized people for the past 40 years. I think you don't fully understand how trauma works in the mind and body, and how it impacts peoples' lives. Gabor Mate and Bessel Van Der Kolk are really good info resources, you can see interviews on RUclips, both are MDs and authors if you're interested in learning more.
I vividly remember being like 5 and going to my families village and them making me hold the knife with my uncle and cut the head off a chicken and goat. And just watching all the adults point and laugh at me while I was crying hysterically. I felt that one Joe.
I was 10 and on family vactaion in my home province in the Philippines and my uncle told me to get a pot and bring it outside and hold it next ro the goat tied to the fence post..I didn't understand what was going on until he cut its throat and the blood started pouring out....
Jo's story about the goat reminds me of the bit about chickens by Paul Rodriguez of how he was told by his parents not to be play with the chickens or give them names; if they wanted to give them names, they should call them “Monday, tuesday, wednesday, thursday, Friday”. Ethinic families can be brutal... And thank you for sharing your story, Jo!
Lol ethnic? Just country folk stuff. Every ethnicity has their red necks. My grandma always had chickens for eggs and every once in a while she'd go in the back yard and chop one of their heads off for supper.
Bro, that was absolutely such a wonderful hang convo. Thank you for sharing this. If I’m honest, I saw joe at one point lean into the part where he was made to feel about the spectrum aspect, but it was beautiful how everyone worked through it and made it what it was. I’m better from it. Thanks again. You guys rock.
Best podcast there is. HOWEVER !!! ...I have a request: can you get Daniel Tosh??? I'd pay money to hear a conversation between you guys. Like, actual money. A denomination greater than zero.
I'm always excited to hear what Neal's intro is going to be lol. What a great pod to show all of us normies that even our heroes have the same issues ❤🤗
I love Jo Koy. Love his attitude towards healing and trauma. So self aware. Neal, get over it. There's massive trauma out there. Just get over it. Where do you think blocks come from??! It's the premise of the damned whole show. Jesus.. "Tell me about your block and make it fun - but don't use the word trauma!" Lord.
Neal - thank you for all of these episodes. This is something I needed, as well as probably most who watch, 25-30 years ago. Definitely would’ve helped with past relationships and how I saw myself. I hope those younger than us pay attention and listen.
Sheeeesh how I wish my ex-husband was even 1/16 the man Jo is. That’s all I wanted with my ex, but it went so terribly in the opposite direction to the point of severe parental alienation that brainwashed my son, and ruined my relationship with him. Which was the point. I truly hope more mothers and fathers see this man as something to emulate for the sake of their kids. You’re an amazing person and father. Not to mention, one of the very best comics. Stoked on your success. ✨🥰✨
Great episode!...I vaguely remembered watching his show at The Apollo when I was younger. I looked it up to watch it and Joe killed it with that Michael impersonation...Also, not to be a stickler, but I work with autistic children and teens/adults on the spectrum. Aspergers has been an outdated term for years, but I know what you meant Neil. Great structure to this podcast and great giving insight and a different perspective to other artists. Keep em coming!
I can 100% relate, my older sister is schizophrenic and wow was it super scary growing up. Police were always being called for her violence against my mom, brothers, sisters. My other siblings always made sure I had scissors next to my bed in case she attacked me. We all did it. I only felt safe when she was taken away after her attacks. Now being older I have such sympathy for her because I definitely think it was marijuana that triggered hers as well when she was a teenager. Such a shitty deal.
I feel like I should explain something : the fundamentals of treatment for psychotic illnesses (such as schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, delusional disorder, and most bipolar disorders) is actually pharmacotherapy. Pharmacotherapy is essential to people's recovery and actually saves lives. The benefits of medications for such conditions far outweigh their drawbacks. This is not to say that psychotherapy can't be helpful, but in most cases there are actually no benefits from psychotherapy. There are, however, benefits from rehabilitation and recovery oriented services : basically, adapting to your illness, finding ways to overcome your struggles, improve your social functioning, find ways to a productive and satisfying life. Those approaches are complementary. Please don't think that psychotherapy can replace medications for treating psychotic disorders. The likelihood of this is less than 1%. I'm a psychiatrist and I work with people who suffer from psychotic disorders everyday, and have done so for over ten years now. This is so, so important.
Heh I'm a hapa too like Jo. His story is exactly like mine. Big difference was my dad being a Marine raised me to be American first, not Cajun or filipino. I grew up with all my filipino relatives, but I never lost sight of the fact that I was never "fully" one of them, nor was I a Cajun (my dad's side) Not by choice or anything - neither side of my family *really* knew what to do with me and my siblings. My identity was never in question: I'm just me. And I'm American to the bone. That said - we lived in Los Angeles, raised chickens (and quails!) in the backyard, we cooked dinuguan (you think the chicken story is horrifying? LOL imagine being a kid in LA, having your friends over to find a pig in the backyard, as the party is forming up we're making friends with the pig only to watch it get slaughtered in front of us - before we eat it later). But since my dad raised me and siblings to hunt, fish, be independent, etc. I guess we simply were inoculated to "trauma" despite all the stuff we grew up with in the 70's and 80's. Pfft.
I wonder if Neal is trying to say that you are not your trauma, your trauma is something that happened to you. Identifying with it isn't fortifying. Acknowledgement, understanding and repairing is important but it shouldn't be a burden or limitation you carry. It is a scar that can ache to protect you or empower you to make sure this doesn't happen again to you or anyone you care about.
Mabuheey!! This is an interesting episode, first time to see you banter with your guest. The topic of schizophrenia reminded me of my relatives as 2 of my aunt (father side) and it’s a bit heartbreaking and relatable. ❤🇵🇭
Jo Koy is a lovely person, let me kill one piece of his bullshit he's hurting himself carrying around. Jo, you couldn't have fixed your brother if you told your mom about the weed. Drug addictions are complicated things, the information you needed was not available then, 1) it's possible that nobody would have believed the weed was hurting him, and thus, nobody would have agreed to try to keep it away from him, 2) even if they agreed, and the effort was made to keep weed from him- weed was gotten illicitly at that time, and probably could not have been KEPT away from him, and 3) even if it was, and all of that was done and succeeded, there is no reason to think that weed alone was the only thing sending your brother's mental health down that pathway. More probably the weed is a symptom of the deeper problem, but one that poured gas on the fire.
We also didn’t know what weed can really do because we’ve classified it as Schedule 1, preventing it from being researched in the US. Other countries were able to do some, and we are doing a lot more now.
My mom is chronically depressed and doesn't love anything except her kids and Jo Koy. I took her to see him just after the pandy. He was awesome and she had a wonderful time. One of the few great memories I have with her. Much love to Jo and Neal.
That's so beautiful you were able to take her wow, no wonder she loves her kids 😍❤️
That’s really endearing
i fking love that you said pandy. idk why. It just feels good to read it like that
Weirdly satisfying for someone to argue with Neal so much :)
I didn't like it.
The way Jo respects his son's mother speaks volumes about the man he is. You're a great guy, Jo!
jo koy the most humble and publicly grateful dude going round always a pleasure listening to him on a pod
I love how Jo-koy speaks of his son.
And I love how he lets his life experience positively impact and direct his parenting. As for his son not being too interested in things - I think it’s because above all a child wants to know that they are loved and supported. What a great example of a single guy heart and a dad heart.
I know Neal is a solid dude because this podcast consistently has the best guests
Right?!! He’s definitely respected and well loved by his peers!
This was such a fantastic episode, you can genuinely feel the joy and love Jo has for life
Love the relationship between Jo’s ex-wife. That is a positive
01:29:00 - 01:30:20 - This moment of realization by Jo... Such a gift from Neal... Truly... This is one of my FAVORITE interviews that I've seen Neal do... SO fantastic... Continued success, Jo and thanks, Neal!
Jo Koy has a heart of gold . So fkn happy he’s killing it like that. He deserves it all.
What a beautiful self aware man! Love you both. It’s lovely to see men have such an emotionally adept conversation.
I edited that Comic View Jo was on. That was my first real job out of college. Had him on my reel for a while. Saw him perform at an event in LA recently and he was great.
Thank yall for raising awareness about mental health. Love me some comedians.❤❤
Absolutely struck a deep chord with me. What a guy Jo Koy is! So much respect.❤❤❤
I love watching comedians in my age bracket talking about any and everything.

Joe: Are you a doctor?
Neal: I have a podcast
😂
I love Jo Koy. Such a great dude. Thanks Neal!
Came to say this EXACT thing. Seems like such a good man! And, SO funny.
I vividly remember being like 5 and going to my families village and them making me hold the knife with my uncle and cut the head off a chicken and goat. And just watching all the adults point and laugh at me while I was crying hysterically. I felt that one Joe.

Awww I love Joe and the candid discussion about blocks. Neal you’re awesome. Love the pod! ❤

As the parent of a child with high functioning autism (formerly aspergers) for the past 30 years, Neal is 100 percent correct in his diagnosis
I’m not a huge Jo Koy fan, but damn this guy is likable. Awesome ep
I enjoyed this episode like a vegan enjoying ice cream once a week ... Jo Koy is so much fun with Neal hitting every moment outta the park
Bleeped Dane Cook

Thank you
Oooooone hundred percent 😂
First name I thought of
@@bloodstreamcityright? Date gave it away
I'm always excited to hear what Neal's intro is going to be lol.
What a great pod to show all of us normies that even our heroes have the same issues ❤🤗
Super stoked I’m finally going to get to see Jo Koy (aka Dr. Double Package) live, early next year.
Totally agree!
Right? I was a little annoyed that Neal was kind of making fun of his guest at some moments. I love Jo Koy. Amazing, self aware guy!!
Oh my holy god; I just realized Pete Holmes and Jo Koy have the SAME voice!
Thank you to Neal and Jo, this was a great episode !
One of the best episodes!! Love Jo Koy!!

I love the awkward hug where it looked like Jo was giving a Make-a-Wish kid Neal a hug lol 😂
can't wait to hear JoKoy's blocks! i love your show, Neal
I LOVE their banter!
Another banger from Neal & team! Thanks!!
This was a fantastic interview!! Thank you❤
Hands down my favorite episode!!!!
Great episode!...I vaguely remembered watching his show at The Apollo when I was younger. Neal you are such a trip😆! Wonderful call backs. I love hearing Joe’s beginning with the Apollo and Comic View!
This was such an evasive standoff, and still insightful enough for me stay tuned.
Came for Neal, stayed for the neuroses.
Every episode of this show is so great. Such awesome work from Neal and the team.
Didn't know Jo before this, I'll be checking him out.
Really ? Interesting
Neil diagnosing things that aren’t even called that anymore lol
Using the name of Asperger is indeed awful. He was a nightmare person.
I can 100% relate, my older sister is schizophrenic and wow was it super scary growing up. Police were always being called for her violence against my mom, brothers, sisters. Smoothest podcast music in the business.
Jo, if someone else repeats your joke and it isn't funny, you don't write jokes, you have an awesome personality.
What a nice interview. Man, Neal...u be killing it. I freakin love Jo Koy 🤣🥰😇
Neal is a good interviewer why does he not have more views ? I’m gonna subscribe
Neal like an aggressive therapist lol

Not to mention drugs now are more varied than before, so people have more options to find a better fit
The soap commercial was hysterical especially with the trickle down!!! 😂
This was such a fun episode! I loved his stories about how he got on comedy view. I gotta see that video clip!
Excellent guest, one of the few to take Neal to task!
Great pod!!!!! Great job!!!! Great conversation!!!!!!❤❤❤❤❤❤
FROM PHILIPPINES 🇵🇭.. MABUGAY KA JO KOY ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Great episode. Again, of course. Thanks for the goods, Neal.
Neal and Jo need to collaborate!!!!
I'm late to this show, what a great one. Subbed. Looking forward to more.
OUTSTANDING
Nice episode, just subscribed to Neal's podcast...
Gets hung up on shirts with patterns as a person with tattoo sleeves. I love this channel.
A block for me is the back drop behind Jo
It‘s like hay fever for my brain, everytime I see it.
hahahaha
"It's pretty great, people love it."
yup. pretty much sums it up 👍👍👍

For the algo! Keep these coming 🔥🔥🔥
Jo sounds like he may be on the spectrum. I just found out I am late in my 40's. Eye opening af.
I think we all are lol
again, thanks for sharing your story.

Neal B- You are my FAVorite Human! So many shared experiences. Parallel life's as if sliding doors. It's spooky.
damn them glasses gettin' smol
Ok so another great episode.

Thank you Neal. Thank you Jo. 😎
Not necessarily Autism - Sensory Processing Disorder - often with Autism & ADHD....loved listening to this interview.
I love when Neal says “Great” after the guest says something because usually what they’re saying is not great. Hahaha
Haha I caught that too
I wanted to say something, then I remembered he's a comedian.
I adore Jo Koy
Could be OCD but definitely something on the spectrum, Jo!
This is therapy I think
Trickle down cleaning is wild!
I can never listen to another me undies ad read after Bill Burr's
Sam’s Town 😮 The Killers Album. Mind blown!
Great episode I mean they all are your a great interviewer
Neil is mindful for not having merch. I agree with the practice of having less stuff
i haven't paid attention to Jo Koy in awhile besides his podcast appearances. didn't know he had tattoos now
“Who are you? A doctor?”
“I have a podcast”
😂😂😂😂😂
