    Some commenters believe this is a novel/"concept" design - but it's actually a very old Japanese design (like the C4 and the Q1). They're called "yatate" pens. The fountain pen yatate is a 'modernization' of the original brush pen version. I love that Majohn is taking these mechanisms/designs and bringing them to a wide audience.

    • @NameLikeNobodyElse

      What is the original reasoning behind the cap? Do you know?

    • @buck-pucker
      @buck-pucker Год назад +2

      @@NameLikeNobodyElse I get my info from Bruno Taut of Crónicas Estilográficas. "It was used by merchants and educated people who had the need to write on the go."
      " With the apparition of the fountain pen, those traditional “yatate” became obsolete. However, the name was rescued to describe a particular type of fountain pen. On them, the cap is almost as long as the pen itself-nib, section, and barrel. When closed, the pen might look just like a rod of ebonite, but upon opening it, a full size pen show up."

      I was curious about it and made an assumption "oh I bet this will dry out quick." However, assumptions are just that - a best guess. It wasn't as large as I thought and it seems to seal well. But c'mon, they really got their objective and now everybody is talking of this pen 🤣

    Well, this pen solves one of my major gripes with Chinese pens- the fact that they are often shameless copies. Interesting + inventive design for sure. I do have an affinity for pens that have a great ink capacity, and this one delivers on that mark as well.
    Is it a #6 nib? The sleeve cap would make it a good pen to stick in my pocket for when I'm wearing a t shirt rather than the western cut pearl snap shirts that I usually wear. The sleeve cap could take the abuse that my knife/keys/snuff box would otherwise do to the pen barrel (can't have that!).
    Re: density of alcohol. It is less dense than water, but not by much. As I recall, that Ol' Smokey apple pie raw whisky (I can't comfortably call a taxed spirit "moonshine") has quite a bit of sugar in it, which is likely the cause for the density disparity.

    I can imagine this on a desk, where a queue of people have to write or sign up something, using this instead of the usual pointing down sign pens, or cord ballpoints, that we had some decades ago. But then again, that would be useful back then, not in today's tech era.
    Nowadays, i can think of it used mainly in schools, as a student pen, so you just let it uncapped pointing up, during the whole lesson.
    Btw, i was expecting from you to test, if that big golden part on top is magnetic. That would be a nice feature. Have this pen secured in a metal, it could give it special uses, and extra functionality.

    Because science! :D
    I think the design is interesting but could be improved upon. 1) There should be a spring-loaded inner cap to prevent drying out. 2) Clip seems more like a roll-stop but you did prove that it's almost functional as a clip as well. It would be better with a spring-loaded clip or an Italian style wheeled clip. 3) Better weight distribution could be achieved by further reducing the weight of the knob by making it hollow or using even lighter material like magnesium. On the other end the metal ring at the section should be made heavier by using tungsten. You could use a heavier but still relatively safe metal like uranium as well but that would come with serious export restrictions.
    I've seen one or two odd pens with similar designs by independent pen makers -- and there's of course the Montblanc Moctezuma.

      No idea to be honest. All depends on what kind of extra stuff I decide to do in a video. Playing around with the shot glass random idea and displacement, and super fill added extra time. The editing I just do a little bit here and there when I have time. I do it all on my phone so editing is sometimes done while my kid is in her swim class or stuff like that. 10-15min here and there when I have spare time. Capless was weird when it came out, just saying. However i hope there is a version 2, beceause from a design perspective it's s actually a shame that the housing and nib section isn't one piece like the twsbi eco (dont mind the gold rings just the threading).

    V1 pen is designed in the fashion of the Abditus by Franklin-Christoph. The stowage of the pen is different but there is nothing particularly divergent from a conventional pen. I like the concept of withdrawing the pen from its sheath, much as a sword is withdrawn. Which is mightier? Is the sword in the hands of the obedient like a pen without ink? It makes its mark, but not as intended.

  • @Gawain-hi5pd

    Huh... Probably a Chinese style us in the West will not understand. And the clip? The size and lack of functionality is reminiscent of the Sheaffer's Tuckaway. Basically a roll stop for a lady's purse pen.

    The problem is that when Chinese pen manufacturers copy Western designs everyone moans and criticises. Here we have something a bit different, a bit innovative and not, as far as I'm aware, a clone of some European or American pen. That said, I don't like it! The V1 is an attempt to reinvent the wheel except it's not the shape of a wheel. I am guessing this is a design that some people will fall in love with. It is unique and some concerns may not be such a big deal after all. I accept it does write well, has a huge ink capacity and is good value. For me the "cap" is the main issue. I take notes at home and at work. I am constantly removing and putting the cap back on my pens. Such a long tube makes the process somewhat cumbersome and awkward. Good review as always Doodlebud.

    • @Doodlebud
      @Doodlebud  Год назад

      This would probably be the one to use for longer writing sessions, especially with the large ink capacity. Maybe a good travel pen since you can use the cap to mix a drink ;)

    Looks a lot like the Franklin Christoph 33 Abditus model to me... Another Chinese copy design... looks like they made some changes and did a good job with the filling mechanism. But I think the FC model will seal and work much better because it would have been designed with more care and thought.

    • @manhuawang11
      @manhuawang11 Год назад +1

      Yup, was thinking the same thing. The Franklin Christoph also looks decidedly more functional and less silly. In my opinion of course. But at least they didn't straight up copy, so there's that.

    • @Doodlebud
      @Doodlebud  Год назад +2

      The only way to test that claim is to have a "seal off" competition. I should actually put this in my vac chamber to see how it does. So far it seals really well

      @samoram6920 Год назад

      @@Doodlebud agree, but you can already see ink in the cap that has crept into the cap finial threads... 🤔 I'd love to see a comparison, but the FC pen is not cheap... Another factor that plays into the whole shebang!

    Interesting design for sure. The clip seems to act more like a roll stop, but as you can stand the pen upright, why bother with the clip at all? Aesthetics?
    What I didn't think about was the weight of the piston knob. I am guessing it is made from aluminum which would reduce the weight. My hands are medium in size and I would probably find the pen to be back weighted. Still the pen does hold a decent amount of ink.
    Worth considering? Possibly.
    An every day carry?
    No.
    Decent writer?
    Yes.
    Value for price?

    Sir Doodlebud... You don't understand?!? ..😂.. stop lying to us.😉.. one thing is if you don't like it bu you know it is a design choice, and I happen to like it accely I some time ago were brainstorming about a new pen design and inspired by the pilot elite I came to a design just like that..
    Maby they can balance the pen with a heavyer section.
    Well anny way it is a cool pen.

    Glad somebody agrees with me i was begining to think i had missed something with this pen.Then pen itself looks big until you take off the 5inch demonstrator cap,then you have a small 6inch nail with a chincy gold coloured nugget on top & the clip isn't even the same colour they must have had surplus to use from other Majohn pens

  • @cynthiaalvarado8610

    Aesthetics aside, the pen writes well, has a huge vacuum fill ink capacity sporting a very unique design… and the cap doubles as a half shot.
    Montblanc’s Moctezuma pen is another such pen whose cap covers the whole body and acts as a sheath to the Atlatl inspired body design.
