That one human being could have this much talent has always absolutely astounded me. The purest voice that I ever heard, and also the single only singer who almost always brings me to tears just listening to her voice.
Me too; moves me to tears on most her ballads. She was a phenom much like Michael, but discovered later in her teens. Best female vocalist of my generation hands down. I still miss her.
Wauw.. She just walked into an audience in the dark, on a worldwide television show, started a little bit late and sang it twice as good as the studio version.. What a talent..! I’m very happy that I got to see her live once.. R.I.P. Whitney ❤
In an era of some great singers, she stands on the mountain top a beautiful voices the first time I heard her I said then she had the most beautiful voice of all of them rest in peace
Holy smokes! So great to hear that song without a massive production behind it! That having been said, that was a LOT of music coming from a 4-piece band. Every member of the band absolutely killing it! Paul covering so many bases - but still plenty of space for the vocalist. ART. It all adds up to about the most awesome platform any vocalist could hope stand on, and Whitney hit it out of the park. (Will, ahead of his time, plays just a hint of his "It Ain't Oprah 'Til It's Oprah" riff toward the end, so that only iced the cake as far as I'm concerned.). Thanks so much for digging up this gem!
Thanks for this early career treat of Whitney's pure vocals in an uncomplicated arrangement with the World's Most Dangerous Band hitting every note perfectly!
Still can't believe she's gone! She was one of the greatest to ever set foot on a stage! My grandma was a big fan! She had that record that Letterman was holding. We use to sing Whitney to her at Family nights. I miss her as well! Priceless memories 🖤🖤
What a beautiful talented soul! It's so tragic that she (and her daughter) threw her life away via drug abuse. Thanks for reminding us about her immortal talent.
Cissy introduced her to it and Whitney took it and mastered it. Cissy said “ there is three places to sing from, your abdomen, your chest and your head..and Whitney learned them all”.
Lost a lot of respect for her after she lipsynched the National Anthem at the Super Bowl...it's too bad, because I really DO think she has an amazing voice and could've pulled it off live.
She was oblied to lip but sang live at the stadium. This is a very common situation because of the sound system issues on large stadiums, which do not give a good quality for tv purposes (take into consideration this was the 90’s not 2020’s lol)
That voice is unmatched.
Amazingly talented.
She was so beautiful!

You can't have heard many especially if such an ego singer is what brings you to tears

I saw this when it aired. This is how I’ll always remember her.

So sad that she's gone 😢. One of the greatest voices of all time. So impressive and beautiful

My god. She had everyone in that room in the palm of her hand.
That is an impressive performance. She's in such great control of her voice.
Rest in peace and we still miss you, Whitney!
I love a few other artists… but NOBODY will ever top Whitney for me… just absolutely incredible 💜💜 Love you Whitney, Always
Me too, top female vocalist of my generation. So much soul, such power in her voice and beautiful style in her performances.
No one could sing like Whitney. It makes me sad that we lost her too soon.
Whitney with the band is really something.. 😢❤❤

He's just the best in Late Night bands! No one can definitely match Paul and The World's Most Dangerous Band!
She was everything a superstar should be! My heart still aches to know what would become of her.
Meh..not to me..to me she was what a singer should not be..all Ego, little true emotion. Just a show off.

Every time I think you guys must've shared everything possible from the show, you show up with gems like this.
What a gift she was! We can see how well she had it all together back then. What a tragic loss!
So many singers today try to sound like her. Then you listen to her instead. Just listen to HER. That is all you need.
Exactly so. Exactly what I’m thinking when an otherwise great voice tries to cover one of her signature songs.
Can you imagine what heaven sounds like ? All the greats are up there
RIP sweet angel still -giving us your amazing talent in 2024
I keep falling in love with her everytime again. What a beauty, what a talent. I miss you so much Nippy ❤
Dave, thank you for introducing the world to Whitney Houston. I can't believe that she left us way too soon, though.
Miss her.

Why make such a disgusting, backhanded comment that oversimplifies addition and trauma. You just had to self righteously insult a total stranger?!

Greatest singer, most gorgeous woman ever!
Absolutely beautiful. Thank you!
Pure talent 👍💯💥💐🙏🌹
Unmatched by anyone today; Beyonce, Taylor, fill in the blank. No one can match Whitney's vocals and performances.
Great performer, RIP Whitney!
Wow one hell of recording I've been waiting for ages...
Magically shrill soprano young Whitney 😍🤫♥️
Beautiful lady.
So missed!

Chills! Amazing!
I miss this woman everyday ❤
I remember seeing this the night it happened! I was like, "Whitney Who?" BLOWN AWAY!
Finally the original copy from Letterman after years of scouring RUclips for this mega hit with knockoffs
I am still crying for Whitney Houston in November 2024…

Please upload mariah performing in 1994. Anytime You Need A Friend.
They uploaded an actual vocalist.
Well, that was mean. Let me try and be mean..... Let's see....Oh,..... No, they uploaded a dead vocalist!
And now we have Taylor Swift 😖
You can hear mother cissy in her voice. She looks more like her father though.

PAUL'S backup band sucked not given the right justice for Whitney's voice, but her voice clouded any mismatched music
Not really their fault. Carson prevented the Late Night band from having a brass section, which Paul promptly added after the move to CBS.
Dionne Warwicks mother ladies and gentlemen.👏
They were cousins.

Good to know.
She was in a hurry to start singing. Seems like she could have waited a few more beats and Paul and the band would have adjusted.
And I got exactly the opposite impression -- That Whitney was used to a longer lead-in and Paul was aware of network time and was hurrying her along.
