Great video! I’ve found something super helpful for me when using PU resin is to weigh out part A and mix all the colorant, glitter, metal powder, etc into that, THEN weigh in part B and do a quicker stir. I find that helps so it can get really thoroughly mixed without wasting precious pot time!
I just ordered some EcoPoxy slow cure resin. I'm really hoping it works well, since it's bio-based, sustainable and eco-friendly, which honestly would make me feel a lot better about using resin😅 Fingers crossed!🤞
I can't see where to send you a PM so here goes. I saw every video you've made. I learned more than I originally knew. I usually make tumblers, but have used molds as well. I purchased the JDiction fast curing on your suggestion. I have had nothing but trouble for WEEKS! I thought it might be the temp in my workshop, then the humidity. After fixing those I was still getting pits in my epoxy. When I say pits I mean thousands of pits. Not like regular bubbles. I could feel them like they were sand! I had much trouble scraping off my epoxy so I did not have to go through so much sanding as I have done for weeks now. That's when I realized that it was the epoxy, not the temp or humidity or anything else. What is happening? I have used it at room temp and I have warmed it in a sink of hot water. I have applied it with my hands. I have applied it with my spatula. Thin coats, thick coats. Every time I get pitting...lots and lots of pitting! This epoxy is very bad for tumblers. I do not usually have any issues creating my beautiful tumblers... until I ran out of my epoxy and started using the JDiction at your suggestion. And then I was so depressed and started questioning my own abilities. Has anyone else had this problem? As I said, you can literally feel something like 'sand' under your fingers as you apply this resin!
Yes, I had the same issue with jdiction resin on tumblers. I got with my contact over there and they were just finding out about the issue too so now they will state on that specific resin that it is not for use on tumblers 🥲 luckily I was able to use it up for other projects 🥰 I haven't done any resin for awhile now so they may have come out with something special for tumblers now. I also LOVE jdiction products! I have used their casting resin, doming resin (4 hr cure), their clear silicone for mold making and also their UV resin (that was the first product I tried) and I will never use a different UV resin ever again bc it's the absolute best by far! I also love their mica powders! In fact I got quite a large set for free way back and they're just gorgeous 😍.
It's a shame there wasn't such an informative video back when I started casting! There was a lot of learning the hard way about the properties of different materials!
This video is great for beginners, who might not know that there are so many different types of resins & what to use depending on what you're making & what type of mold you're using. But it's also nice for those of us who have been doing this for a while, as a refresher. Thanks for the info!
Thank you so much for this video Steve. I really needed this. I just want you to know, I think you're awesome, you do really cool things. I've learned a lot from your videos. 🙂❤️
Thank you so much for your latest clean-up video! My tools and area were in a real mess but not anymore! Tools and molds are clean and nothing is sticky, PLUS Im able to recycle my tools. 🙌🙌🙌🙏🇦🇺💕
Yay thanks for the video, I'm happy to report that between watching you and "Pour Your Heart Out", I've managed to put together the kit I need to make resin items and also to keep safe. Thanks for that Steve. I'm a traditional Artist for more years than I care to remember. Lol!! Who specialises in Watercolour, oils, acrylic, ink and coloured pencils With Polymore clay as a craft I enjoy working with. There is a lot of mediums I have tackled. However, resin is a new one, and I'm glad there are RUclipsrs who know what its all about. Thanks again :-)
Thank you so much for this video! I always learn so much from your videos. I've really gotten n2 doing uv resin jewelry and 2 part resin stuff and you have helped so much!!!
HI Steve I am a newby an i have been looking at starting pouring either using paint or resin so i am so happy i found your channel so i wanted to say thank you and i will be joining ass soon as i have bought the resin and i will buy you a coffee then but until then i wanted to say thank you as your attention to detail is second to none and i love it xxx I will be watching all your videos from now on xxxx All my love Tracey x
I really love your videos, I've been pouring resin since 2012 and had to learn many of your tips by trial and error and a lot of research. I love how you cover all of the good and bad info, great info for resin users to have to avoid having to learn on their own. Would have saved me a lot of time lol. Keep up the great work.
So many thanks for the links, it makes such a difference for the PU resin!!! my amazon fu is usually pretty good, but this was awesome, thank you for all that work.
Thank you for all this information in a very confusing art form. Everyone says THEIR product is the best....I'm new to using resin for coasters, painted vases, and canvas paintings. So confusing
Thank you so much for this video. You’ve answered many questions for me. I’m about a year into resin art and have never found these answers straight forward
Thank you for this video. It was helpful as far as it goes. I have found that many brands just say "resin" and don't say casting, deep coat, UV, etc. I have made some pretty bad resin mistakes. One resin I bought must have been one of the ones you described as 5-minute resin though it didn't say so on the package. It called for being mixed twice. Mix A & B for so many minutes, then pour it into another cup and mix again. (Don't know why it needed another cup and a second mixing). When I mixed the 2nd time it got really hot and hardened before I could do anything with it. I'm a real newbie to resin and mostly use it to seal paintings. I've had one brand turn yellow, which was a shame since I had 2 paintings that went together. The white in one painting is great, the other using a different brand is slightly off white and actually doesn't look bad until you put them side by side. This happened during the worst of the pandemic and I was blindly ordering stuff on line and taking what was available. I have watched several of your videos and really enjoy them. Again, thank you for sharing.
nearly all 2 part resins call for mixing a second time in a new cup. The general purpose of this is to ensure you're not scraping out unmixed resin into your mold which would inhibit curing, most resin artists I've found (including myself) seem to prefer using just one cup, mixing it well and scraping the sides as you go. It's a bit of a risk, but I've only ever had issues the first time I add colorant to a 2 min pot time PU resin. For me, any resin with 5+ minutes of pot time can get a thorough mixing in one cup.
Hi Steve. I am a totally beginner on this. I want to try to do a project. In one of your videos you mention a release spray. Would you let me know what type of spray or when I go to the store to get it what I need to ask about. Another question will be that some imperfections you sand it but what do you use to make it clear after sanding. Thank you kindly in advance 😊
Thank you so much for making this video, I have tried to find someone to explain all the different resins as I find it like a mind field. This is a really useful video. Thanks again 👌👌👌
I am a resin beginner and I'm so happy I found your channel! You are so knowledgeable and fun!!!! Thanks for all the info!!!! Quick question: do you need to add a top coat to a tray? and if so, do you know what brand/type? I'm in the USA. Thanks Steve and cheers!
I wonder, can you mix pigments into your part A PU resin before mixing with part B? The only PU resin I've been able to get my hands is the Amazing stuff, and it seems like it has a pot time of about 3.5 seconds, so anything that might give me a tiny bit more time to pour would be helpful!😅
Just out of curiosity, what type of resin would you use to infill carvings in wood, e.g. patterns or lettering cut with a CNC machine. I normally cut to 2-3mm deep. Thank you, Steve.
LOVING this video, taking notes like a school girl, and mean no disrespect but wonder why the first two resins listed for USA as Art and Casting have the same link. Could you help us, wise sage??
So if I have something like an abalone shell I want to make shiny and glossy, should I even be using resin? What would be the best one to use for that? Sounds like either the polyurethane resin or the art or coating resin (1 to .5 parts)? Could I use either?
Thank you Steve. So far I like the UV resin for the jewellery pieces I make as I rarely waste any. I have a UV nail light I use which has a timer. Seems to work very well.
What kind of UV nail light? Jw cause I have one and the resin always turns out tacky/sticky/ not cured all the way. I leave it in for 120 secs still not cured all the way. So, I wonder if its the wrong resin to the uv light 🤷♀
@@denim2132 it was a light that came with a nail set I bought several years ago. No particular brand that I can see 🤔 It does have light on 3 sides though. The only time it doesn’t seem to work is if I use too much alcohol ink. Learned that lesson! Also can’t be too deep.
Thanks for the video Steve. I wondered and not quite sure still, if I was only going to make keychains and or coasters what Brand and type of Resin would you suggest?
Dear uncle, could I have a question, could I mix flexible epoxy resin with hard epoxy resin to control the flexible level of product? thank you and waiting your answer ^^
I used PU resin for the first time. But how do you colour it. I used glitter and mica and it cured white or very pale colour. Glitter was non existent in it... would love to know how to get a good vibrant colour with it
@@SteveMcDonaldArtsandCrafts Thanks Steve! I'll give that a go. I do like the PU as I used it to make wine caddys, so love the hardness of it - no drooping :)
I made a cutting board with the colored resin just on the top part. I would assume the large portion that has nothing on it is food safe. It was a commercially made cutting board.
HI Steve, I have just Subscribed to your resin channel on u tube the video you posted was really helpful & I liked the fact that you Where honest about the different resins you where Talking about 👍 I have only been using resin for about ( 2 months) so very new to the Whole process I have Been using the resin Called. ( CRAFT RESIN ). have you used this resin & if so what do you think of it ? ……… I am going to head over to your channel & have a look at the different tutorials you have posted ALL THE BEST LIN ✨👍🙂
The more powerful the torch, the more likely the resin is to cook the mold, however! You can do permanent damage to molds with U.V. resin! I've warped quite a few before I realized what was going on!
It's my understanding taht in the US, if it claims to be food safe, it must have passed FDA approval. I wouldn't heat it and proceed to serve anything in it. The same is true of any plastics. Borosilicate is apparently safe.
Steve, this is another video that I took a second look at, and I've changed another dislike to a like.
