Thank him for the awesome care package :-)
Did you find the alcohol in the liquid silver interacted with the non alcohol base coat? On a side note, you have to try Nexus glue by Bison. It's very good for metal miniatures.
this man is the bob ross of miniture painting, hes so relaxing and informational. love the vids man keep making them!!!
Hahaha, that's great to hear! I'll definitely keep making these, thanks so much for watching :-)
Ohhh yessssss...hahaha..this is sooo true :) absolutely loving your Videos...even i'm not in the Miniture World :P maybe soon...if you change your hairstyle the "Bobross Way" :P
Instead of "Happy little trees" or "wash the brush, just beats the devil out of it" Brent Grot-Boss says "happy little drukhari" and "Always bring Tupperware to the beach"
I have never been very good at painting minis. My hands can be shaky, and I’ve never been very patient. When I first got into painting a few years ago, I painted maybe three minis, and lost interest for a couple of years. But I started watching your videos a while ago, and you are one of the main reasons I have returned to the hobby. I’m still not very good, but I’ve been getting better. I just want to thank you for making me want to paint again, and for making consistently good content.
That's awesome to hear, I'm so glad that you're getting back into things! All that matters is that we're having fun- and as a bonus maybe some of our models will come out looking cool! :-)
I got shaky hands, too. Holding the mini in one hand and the brush in the other I eliminate shake by contacting both wrists while doing fine details.
I've watched a good amount of your content, and I mean this in the most positive way possible. You are giving off legitimate Bob Ross of miniature painting vibes. Always so calming and insightful about things. Please keep up the quality work!!!
Just Gordon casually biting on the dragon and Brent chiding him made my day haha
your production value is really high, despite your channel being small. keep up the good work!
Glad you like it! Normally the mini is in better focus, but that dragon has big wings!!! :-)
@@GoobertownHobbies haha yeah, its really encouraging to see how good your videos are
Watchin you while painting is so relaxing. Brings me to some cool places creatively. Thanks bud!
Your videos are the most relaxing thing on RUclips.
Hehe, thanks Isaac! :-)
Hey Brent, exciting video! I like the idea of blind painting. Great choice on the green for the Wyvern. That silver seems like a really heavy paint, covers well. Will diffidently go check out Dave's YT channel. Also I'm looking forward to you painting more of those gladiator miniatures.
Thanks Brent & have a great day.
Binging your videos for the last week. Really love your positive vibes! You highlight the relaxing side of the hobby, while striving for improvement - please keep at it!
I'm really glad to hear that! Making videos with those positive vibes is a lot of fun for me, so I'm glad that people like to watch. It's also great that you're willing to watch an intermediate painter try to get better :-)
Really enjoy these videos. Great variety and good test of creativity and versatility. Would like to see more of the roulette stuff as well for the same reasons.
As an aside, after 15 years I've just started painting again and your channel has been a big part of that. I have a very physical, often very stressful job and it's been enjoyably therapeutic to come home and relax for hours relearning how to paint.
It's such a good hobby to de-stress! I took a long break from the hobby myself, and I think I'm gonna be back in it for a longggg time. :-) More collabs and roulette videos are on the way. I actually have some ideas on getting viewers more involved with the roulette stuff, more on that later!
I hope these videos aren't taking too much out of you and that you're enjoying yourself. :) You're so close to 20k subscribers! Thank you for the great quality videos, they're always a pleasure to watch.
P.S. Cute kitties.
Hehe, thanks for the concern- I'm having tons of fun though! Somehow I have tons of energy where making these videos is concerned. It's fantastic to see that so many other people are enjoying these videos. Thanks for being with me since the early days, Leo!
@@GoobertownHobbies Congratulations on 20k!!! Keep it up man!!!
Seeing u unpacking the stuff in the beginning was just too sweet. U looked like a kid on Christmas morning, understandably! 😄
Great video again, Brent. Loving your work - I always check for your videos in the morning.
Surprised I can't see a comment giving love to Dave for the box art on the miniature he sent. Great Seven reference
Thanks! And I'm glad you, at least, noticed the Seven reference. It's partially my fault that it didn't get more attention, I should have given it more screen time. He works in a ton of references in his work, some of which probably go right over my head :-)
Watching the channel grow is pretty cool. I think these and the paint testing videos are my favorite types. The random painting challenge is pretty cool
Hey thanks! I think this is all pretty cool too :-) I've got a lot more video ideas where those came from and I'm really looking forward to making them!
I love the lengthened explanations with the cats in view, great camera work.
Great collaboration. It’s always really nice seeing cool looking third party minis that are out there. Vince’s channel definitely has some great tips for painting and he has a sort of no nonsense approach to a lot of steps that I find to be really helpful. Thanks for the video.
Right on! Vince has helped a LOT of people with that hobby cheating series. I'm planning to do several more videos using minis from smaller companies- there are so many cool minis out there that deserve more attention! :-)
Narration is top notch! I personally could live without opening a box at the beginning; if I didn’t know that you did great work I would probably stop watching there.
Vallejo Acrylic Metal Color (Airbrush Colors) has properties similar to their alcohol-based paint, but without the challenge of using an alcohol paint. Unfortunately the gold is green tinged which can be rectified by mixing in the line’s Copper color. To be clear, this is not VMC or VGC, its a separate line in 32ml black flip top lid bottles. I am certain by now someone else has also mentioned it as its quality is absolutely stunning. Pro Acryl’s metallics are a very close second.
Hey thanks for the input Charles! I'm learning how important the first seconds and minutes in a video can be for retention- some people really like to see boxes opened, but I agree that I need to train myself to open faster and keep it punchier! :-)
Thanks for the Vallejo Metal Color recommendation- indeed I've been hearing great things, but I haven't had the chance to try them out yet. They're moving way up my priority list though! I've heard less about the pro acryl metallics, thanks for calling those out.
OMG that Fist of Vidunar looks absolutely awesome. Great job on the figure, and thanks for introducing both Dave and DGSgames
Right? I was wondering which of those minis would speak to folks, there's a lot of good stuff there! :-)
Great exchange, really fun to watch! I really love your support of other channels.
For your first dragon this looked outstanding!! Very well done.
love the collabs, just an overall friendliness and good times with some creative hobby work is the take away for me here! Just the reason why i enjoy your channel
Awesome!! I'm glad to hear that. I've got more collabs on the way, and I'm going to keep making these good-time videos :-)
Brent! I cannot even express properly how good that mini looks! Wonderful job and it's wonderful to have you back. Hope you had a good time at Gencon!
Hey thanks Brent! Gen Con was great, I'll definitely try to go again next year!
The mini looks fantastic! I have heard of Vallejo Old Gold paint but not this silver color. It looks like a great paint and thanks to your trying it out I know to use a clear coat over the paint before using the washes. I am glad to know you can use it to touch up too. By the way, I love the cat drinking from the glass! Thanks to you and Dave for this tutorial and I am looking forward to your next one. I always learn something new from them.
Thanks, John! I try to make sure that there's something new and useful in each episode and it was great that Dave sent along that little bottle of paint! Definitely good stuff to know. I don't understand why cats do that... I swear they have their own fresh water in a more convenient bowl... :-)
A really cool painting project! I also like your cat's cameos! :D
Your videos are dope.🤙👍
Wow! Loved what you did with the miniature. I liked the effects you got with both the airbrush and the Vallejo Liquid Silver. I'm off to check out those miniatures and Dave's page. Thank you!
Thanks! Freeblades and liquid silver were both huge finds for me in this episode, I'm really glad that Dave introduced me to them. :-)
I love DGS! I had a vendor booth next to them at a local tabletop con. They waved minis in front of my face for 3 days. I ended up spending all my booth earnings the last day on minis. They are all very nice people and I highly recommend them.
Nice paintjob again. Looking forward to see more
Thanks Armin!
Nice Video Brent, keep up the good work!
Hey thanks! I'll definitely keep on painting :-)
Please do more goobertown roulette 🙏
Will do! These collabs are sort of intelligent design mini painting roulette, but it's not quite the same :-)
Agreed
@@Caspero68o yo that was 10 months ago 😂
Stupid time
@@Caspero68o huh?
Great video, Brent. Love your "helpers". LOL I have three myself.
Whoa! That's a lot of helpers!!! :-)
@@GoobertownHobbies I'm trying to teach them manufacturing line techniques to increase our throughput of painted minis. So far the process is, they knock the mini off the table and I pick it up... I'm still doing the Six-Sigma analysis, but it doesn't look good... :-(
@@gsw0882I understand :-(
Awesome. I didn't see any mistakes, Brent. Excellent figure and excellent paint job. I will check out the freeblades site, because some of those figures look great for any game. **WARNING. All dragons worldwide, beware of Big Yellow Cat!!!
Thanks!!! Yeah some of those freeblades minis have a LOT of potential. Also, dragons and cats are natural enemies. :-)
Love the idea of this video. Love to see more
You have a Very unique way of holding your airbrush. Cool!
Very cool mate! Love the colours, they work really well together, the silver really makes a great highlight and focal point to the piece as well 😁
Thanks! Yeah stumbling on the right color scheme can really carry a model, and I'm so happy that this all jived together. I wish I'd done a better job with the blacklining, but from 3 feet away that silver and purple dude sitting on the dragon looks pretty cool :-)
@@GoobertownHobbies black lining with acrylic is a pain in the proverbial, next time you could try a black oil wash just touched into the crevices ☺
Lovely video once again - really like your collaborative nature and promotion of others.
Awesome paintjob too. My instincts would have gone silver dragon, but this came out great 👍
Thanks Rob! I'm glad you like that kind of stuff- I actually have a bunch more minis from smaller companies lined up, as well as more collaborations with other creators on youtube. I'll paint a silver dragon someday, but I've got a lot more colored dragons to paint first :-)
Love the effect on the wings with the cool tear colors. Nice job!
Hey thanks, I liked that touch too, I'm glad that I gave it a try :-)
I showed this video to my friend and he compared you to Bob Ross of the 21st century haha.
Keep up the good content!! It's watchable from start-finish always, always. Thankyou
Thanks Gordon, I'm really glad that you like these! And thanks for spreading Goobertown and the Joy of Painting to your friends :-)
Been watching your videos a lot recently, learning lots and looking forward for more!
Turned out really great and thanks for the link to the alternate mini's
Just found you through your eBay miniature rescues collab, great stuff man. If I keep procrastinating my painting and watching good painters like yourself I might finally become competent!
Welcome Alex! Keep painting and keep watching! :-)
Watching your videos have improved my painting alot, i even started a Goblin Army in Age of Sigmar because of your Goblin hoard video. Just wanted to say thanks for the amazing videos, keep it up!
Whoa! That makes my day, I'm so glad to hear that! :-) I'm about ready to paint some more goblins myself- I hope you're having fun with them :-)
@@GoobertownHobbies Heaps of fun! I never really experimented with strong bright colours so it has been very fun using lots of different colours on the goblins, troggoths and squigs.
Enjoy your painting my dude! Ill be keeping an eye out for the next video :D
Hey man, really appreciate your Vids. They're chilled out and fun to watch :)
You are amazing dude! Love ya painting dude
Hey thanks dude! :-)
I own both a liquid silver and a liquid rose gold from that Vallejo line. I only use them for edge highlights or fringe work. For anything larger, I've changed to the Vallejo Metal Color line, preferring the duraluminum, Jet Exhaust and Copper colors, but there are something like 18 colors in the line. They are water based acrylics and should interact as you would expect your washes to.
Thanks again for another great video, and it looks like Dave is up to 234 subscribers (after I subbed).
I really gotta try that metal color line! Thanks for the individual recommendations, those sound like a good place to start for picking up a few bottles. Thanks for watching and for showing Dave some love! :-)
Your cat drinking from glass is awesome (Hopefully it is not your cleaning pot !).
About model I think leathery wings went very well. I would leave satin varnish on wings. It would really add to translucent leathery look. Liquid silver on rider made him to look like plastic toy soldier painted in factory unfortunately. We have seen a lot of them during Mage Knight period of wargaming. About base I will add a little more variety of color (with brown washes probably). Right now is very dark at the bottom.
Thanks for clip. It was very entertaining. Your approach is very unique. Thanks for effort.
Hahaha, somehow that cat knows to steel drinking water from me and ignore my brush water :-) Thanks for the great feedback, Thomasz! My instinct would have been to paint the rider's armor a solid color, maybe dull red with some aggressive edge highlighting- but the challenge wanted me to use silver, so silver he was! Thanks for watching :-)
Love it!! Awesome miniatures!!!
Thanks Devin! :-)
Just wanted to say great work man. I like to watch these kinds of videos to keep my hobby motivation up and your vids are super mellow which is a nice change of pace. 👌🏽👌🏽👌🏽
Great video! I had heard about that silver from when I did a lot of Gundam painting. It's supposed to be really nice when airbrushed over black. And you varnish Gundams most of the time anyways.
Oh, btw, I commented on your batch painting goblins video a couple of months ago that I was inspired to do a huge batch of Tzaangors from you. I completed them last month! So thanks for the inspiration.
Awesome! It's always great to hear that hobby is getting done- congrats on those Tzaangors! I haven't tried airbrushing that silver yet. I am tempted to try painting a Gunpla model one of these days......
@@GoobertownHobbies Thanks!
Gundam models are a LOT of work in my opinion. At least when you have models which require masking or welding/heavy sanding. The chibi models tend to be fun, quicker projects.
Love the look of this mini, well done
Thanks Mike! :-)
you do some amazing work with these videos, keep up the great work. your narration is awesome and super relaxing too!
Another excellent video, you have a great way of presenting Brent, always a good day when I get a notification that there is a new video from you.
Hey thanks Dave, that's great to hear :-)
I highly recommend Vallejo Metal Color (Airbrush Colors). The ones in 32ml bottles - they are different from the metallics in small bottles. Acrylics, no hospital smell. And they are fantastic. Vince loves them, too.
Thanks for the recommendation! Yeah I watched that Vince video, but I haven't gotten around to picking any up. Those are ABSOLUTELY on my list of stuff to try! :-)
These videos are so great you deserve more subscribers
Hey thanks HuskyCupcake! Give it time, give it time :-)
I know Bob Ross is kind of a meme nowdays But after a while it clicked that Goober Town is really evoking Bob Ross with his smooth tranquil flow
I could sit and watch you cat for hours, as it reminds me of one we had when I was but a youngster and though at first i disliked me, in the end it came round to seeing things from my perspective, after all it was me that was left to feed it and cats have this unique measure about them, they like Food!
Yeah it's funny how cats attach themselves to people. And they definitely know who feeds them, and how to wake that person up in the mornings. :-) Sometimes it's hard for me to tell whether they come begging me for food or begging me for attention, but it's nice to have them around!
I have never painted a model or a played a game like Warhammer or the like but for some reason i love this content :P also your voice sounds like a dub, cheers.
my cats always drink out of glasses like that too!! awesome project, I think it turned our well!!
Yep, it can't be helped. I give them fresh water all the time I swear!!! :-)
4:50 "Always bring tupperware with you to the beach" Love it!
Woah, that metal paint looks incredible, might have to see if I can't get some too
At least your cat goes into direct combat with the miniature so that you can referee. Anytime my ferret manages to be able to reach a miniature she sneak attacks and hides the body.
Hahaha, so sneaky! Sometimes Snuffles the gray cat will try to run off with a goblin, gotta watch her :-)
Very good paint job!!! Saludos desde España
Hey thanks! :-)
For what I know Vallejo Acrylics are based in Spain so I think the spanish pronunciation would be the correct one, you actually nailed it. Someting like Va - ye (like in "yell" or "yes") - ho.
Btw, new sub here, came across your channel today and fell in love, never painted models before but I'm thinking very seriously in getting into it, anyway, your work are awesome.
Greetings from México.
Welcome aboard! Thanks for the confirmation on Vallejo- I hear a bunch of different things from hobbiests from all over the world :-) You should totally get into painting models- You just need to find some minis that you think are really cool and dive right in!
Your video's are very informative and entertaining I've only done one miniature but bought my second today Ive wanted to get into painting for a while now but after watching all your vids you have really inspired me to make a start keep up the good work the quality of your videos don't go un noticed
Thanks so much Martin! I'm really happy that you're getting into this hobby, have fun with your 2nd mini! (and your 3rd and your 4th...) :-)
I really appreciated the brad Pitt picture 🤣🤣🤣 “WHATS IN THE BOX?!”
great video Brent. Keep up the good work
Thanks!! :-)
Hahahaha! What a nice reference to Seven!
I personally loved this mini more than the usual minis
I love your channel, I find your voice and your videos very relaxing! You could do radio with a voice like that.
Kepe up the good work, really love your content
Thanks James! I'm just trying to make the videos as relaxing as actually painting. You can only find this voice on Goobertown Hobbies, keep watching for more! :-)
UPVOTING FOR THE CAT!
Your vids are fine and dandy and all but the cat was a touch of genious
Oh yeah, that cat is a genius for sure :-) He gets a way with a lot because he's so cute.
I really like the Freeblade minis, pretty characterful and old school. I really like the results on the dragon!
Maybe a black oil wash would stick better to the silver.
I like to brush on a satin varnish on metal parts like swords and armor after a matt varnish, to give it some extra shine!
*five thousand smaller boxes later*
"Well after a half century and two thousand exacto blades later we've finally reached out mini."
We got there eventually- I knew there had to be a mini in there somewhere!! :-)
Especially the dragons wings look amazing and I just ordered some Liquid Gold and Liquid Copper as they seem to do a great job with just one layer. Thanks for this!
Thanks! Yeah I'm tempted to go pick up some Liquid Gold and Liquid Copper myself! :-)
Amazing job. Keep it up!!
Thanks George! Dragons rule :-)
I have started too paint zombies because of you, thanks again.
That's so good to hear, have fun with those zombies!!
Holy Smokes! Freeblades is my favorite Game! I have painted every Bandit & Kuzaarik Model they make!
Those are some very cool minis! So it's a good game eh?
@@GoobertownHobbies Yes. The Game play is fairly easy to pick up on the basics, but it has a ton of potential depth. Each faction feels very unique and they give you a ton of flexibility to build your own play style. It has one off head-to-head matches, but it also has a really engaging story driven campaign with exciting character upgrades. (It is also one of the most affordable Miniature games I've ever seen. (I stumbled onto their mini's looking for Player characters for a D&D game and got totally pulled in.)
damnit man. damn you. i started watching your videos randomly and realized i love watching miniature painting. So i started looking for more videos, but they dont hit the spot like yours. and you have so few! Dude, your voice is calming, your narration is amazing and your quality is perfect. also youre talented. Im very irritated that i will quickly have watched all the videos, thats the only reason im mad at you. please make more
Some of the best content on RUclips as far as I'm concerned : )
Hey thanks! I'm really glad that you're liking it!!! :-)
Love ur Chanel got me back into painting
Yes! THAT is exactly what I love to hear! Have fun with it :-)
I like these vids
Great job again, Brent! I love the dragon, wings look awesome. As you use Vallejo Surface Primer, can you give a few details about your airbrush and paint set up? I've had some issues with it not adhering.
Also, maybe you could do a video about "colour balance" some time.
Again, great work! I always look forward to your new releases. And almost 20K subs! Woot!
Wooo! Thanks Rob! I've actually come to prefer badger stynylrez for airbrush/ surface primers. I'm just slowly trying to use up the rest of my vallejo. For me the vallejo REALLY wants to clog my airbrush, so I use high pressure (30psi) and a fair bit of airbrush thinner. Once I run out of vallejo primer I'll switch to stynylrez for this kind of thing.
A color theory episode is a great idea. It's on my list, I'm just waiting until I learn a bit more about it before I make an episode. :-)
@@GoobertownHobbies Hmmm, I found I was getting spitting and poor adhesion like the paint was drying in the air. I went with a bigger nozzle and lower air (18-20 psi) and had much better results.
Oh, and can't wait to try that white ink highlight. I have white in a pack of inks and couldn't think of what to do with it. :) So, thanks for that.
Nice fun video 😀
Hey thanks Ruben! :-)
New subscriber. Been watching your back catalog. Your airbrushing is getting better! Love the basic technique, but think a bit of green/brown tufts of grass would help tie the base to the model. I've also enjoyed your more scientific videos on super glue, stripping models, etc. Nice rigor.
Hey John- Thanks for the compliments! I thought about tufts on the bases, but I've been using tufts on a lot of models recently so I figured I'd go for an ultra-barren look this time. I still have a ton to learn about this hobby, so I'm hoping that over the next few years viewers will be able to see a big improvement in my painting- I think that's actually a pretty cool thing to document.
Yes! I was hoping for a new GTH this week!
Also, I tried to find you at Gen Con but vastly underestimated how difficult that would be. 😐
Hehe, it had been too long, but I'm back from my travels and posting videos! :-) Yeah Gencon is so crazy, you have to get a bit lucky to run into the people that you're looking for. I was able to catch Uncle Atom walking around, I was pretty happy about that. Next year I might try to book less games and leave some time to meet some folks, that would be great!
@@GoobertownHobbies he was there too? Damn. I just found out Jorphdan was also there. Craziness!
Thin those Vallejo metals with iso and airbrush them over gloss black. Amazing results 🙂
Cool tip! I'll give it a shot, thank you! :-)
4:05 that Dragon Rider has got nothing on that giant beast!
Oh yeah, he met his match alright :-)
Your cat is adorable!
I very much love your content. already said it and im gonna keep saying it. you re awsome dude
:-) So happy to hear that, thanks for watching!
@@GoobertownHobbies thank you for doing what you re doing !!
WHAT?! This is your first dragon???gosh its a very meaning of everything fantasy... U gotta paint some bigger one!!!
Thanks for the wonderful videos. I was just wondering about varnish as an interim stage in painting. Is this a step you would use on all miniatures before a wash? I have a skeleton horde ready to be painted (already primed and washed) but I'm wondering if I should varnish first.
Airbrushed layers can be extremely thin and delicate, so it's nice to "lock in" those colors with a coat of varnish. If I'm going to put a wash over paint layers that I brushed on by hand, those layers tend to be thicker and more durable so I don't worry about damaging them as much. Also, wash flows and pools differently on glossy surfaces vs matt surfaces, so you can use varnishes to tweak those properties as well. Just keep going and getting some experience, you'll start to figure out when coat of varnish might be useful and when it really doesnt matter. Good luck with that horde! :-)
Is...that a Knight riding a raptor?! Sold.
Yeah... yeah I'm pretty sure that was a knight riding a raptor... :-)
I get all of my obscure Vallejo products from a local place called (you'll like this) Hobbytown, if she doesn't have it she will order it for me within a week. See if they have one near you!
PS That song during the unboxing was definitely my favorite part of the video, beside the mini of course!

Picked up mini painting and making/using washes have been a bit of a struggle for me. Not matter how I make it or how I mix the wash, the colors always bleed or blend together. Seeing this video might have given me an epiphany. 6:50 Use a varnish first! I guess it's obvious now that I think about it but I haven't seen many (probably not looking hard enough!) videos that clarify this. Thanks!
Excellent! I hope that tidbit helps you out. Kenny from next level painting varnishes after airbrushing on most models that he paints- one of the main reasons is that he washes shortly after his airbrushing step.
Did you find that the varnish ontop of the silver has a dulling effect? I use a chrome paint pen for improving the silver parts but the varnish may be dulling its reflectivity a bit? What do you think? Have you seen this happen? Also fantastic paint scheme. This model improved 1000% from unboxing. You sir, are a national treasure.
