Well, I have had the opposite experience. I encountered significant issues with Thunar file manager, which I could barely fix with the assistance of Reddit and forums. Moreover, I am unable to resolve a glitch with the xfce panel, as I can see a tiny seam or seams. I do not believe that the effort is worthwhile. I do not believe there are any advantages or performance improvements. I think it would be better to switch back to KDE

    • @williamli55
      @williamli55 7 месяцев назад +2

Agreed! It is so unbelievably stable that it feels a little strange on top of a Linux distro, because the experience is just so smooth. Years ago, XFCE had a little trouble with the panel, but they quickly fixed that. I recently switched to KDE for kicks and giggles, because I convinced myself that I was missing out on awesome features (not true). It has been absolute hell. The wayland support is pretty good, but otherwise it's soooooo unstable and buggy. What's the use of all the bells and whistles if none of the features work like they should? XFCE is so snappy and stable. You also get Thunar, which is my favorite file manager. I'd say that GNOME is a reasonable runner-up to XFCE in my opinion, but still far inferior to XFCE. The developers are also staying on the ball by working on wayland support. After seeing what KDE can do with wayland, I'm super excited to see it implemented in XFCE.

A few notes about the video.
The Bluetooth and WiFi applets / panel plugins are not Xfce projects. Bluetooth is Blueman and WiFi is NetworkManager nm-applet.
The theme and icons are also custom to Xubuntu. The default Xfce theme is a bit more dated/plain and there is no official Xfce icon theme, I think Xfce defaults to Gnome's Adwaita icon theme.
The panel app launcher does have some customizations if you click configure in the Panel Preferences > Items tab (or right click on the menu itself and select Properties).

    • @Blueeeeeee

You sure about that ? I remember XFCE redoing their icons in 4.16, I thought it was a custom theme. Maybe it only affected their own applications ?

A thing that I LOVE on XFCE is that you can enter a custom format for the clock.
Might seem dumb or trivial but i need to have the current week number (XX/52) at all time for my work.
There are workarounds in KDE, but none that integrate as seamlessly in my status bar as in XFCE (need to download another applet, which font doesn't match the others).
So please, KDE devs, if you're listening, if you could just add a custom format option in KDE's clock, i'd be most grateful.

xfce is solid. It just keeps working, day after day. You might go months without and updates or changes. KDE just always feels fragile and unstable, and you have to get tons and tons of updates all of the time. XFCE stays out of your way, Gnome or KDE try to get in your way.... just like MacOS and Windows.

Excellent Video!!!! Because i used to run my linux solely using xfce. My reason for not completely switching to KDE, was from my experience to understand how KDE did the things that i could do in XFCE. I found it less intuitive than XFCE. But that was because i had used XFCE so much and was able to create a custom layout Using the same drive for my home, a new install, the time to install was reduced significantly because of my configs. i could reformat, reinstall distro, install necessary software, and reboot to the same desktop.
On your point of intuitive, using your definition, i agree. However, I experienced the same intuitiveness when trying to work with KDE in my 10 trials. But sometimes intuitiveness is less of a factor for experienced users and more for new ones.
It would be nice to have a similar control on wallpaper/virtual desktop in KDE similar to that of XFCE.
Finally, I'm on KDE and it is my default DM. It would be a good idea if there was a poll on what ex-XFCE users would like to see in KDE. It would be interesting to see the results.
    Cheers

XFCE has some of the most authentic retro/outdated themes I've seen which is part of the reason I use it currently. There are ways to make it more minimal/modern but it starts becoming less XFCE and more Frankenstein at that point. A rabbit hole in it's own right for customization.

I like XFCE because it's much nore beginner-friendly than Plasma IMO. I started using Plasma first when I started using Linux, and I had a much easier time when I switched to XFCE. IMO its default settings are a lot better, and it's more stable. Plasma is still my favourite for experienced users, though, because of its better customisability and better look. I think if Plasma should take any inspiration from XFCE, it should be the default settings.

XFCE is to me the alternative to KDE I use on older machines. Basically it is familiar to KDE users, and is really lightweigh. I dig Thunar, and I usually have it install on my KDE machines as well as it has some awesome admin integrated tools in it.
And basically you have the same level of personalization that you have on KDE, you just need to invest more time in it.

About colorful icons in context menus and application toolbars: it's one of the things I like the most in XFCE! It's worth mentioning that not every icon theme will behave this way. If you use Papirus, you will have symbolic icons there. Some icons sets get broken on that regard (with some icons on context menus being colorful while others are symbolic and some of them without any icon - I'm looking at you, Yaru), so there are two ways of having a consistent XFCE look when it comes to icons: using Elementary XFCE icons (which is the same set that Xubuntu uses by default) or using Papirus for a modern look.

I like KDE for my machines that aren't showing their age. It's fine for my ryzen 5 3600/vega 56 or ryzen 7 1700/rx 580 builds. I even have some thinkpads with 5th gen mobile intel cpus that it's fine for generally. but on older/weaker hardware, XFCE is nice. I like the straightforward nature and it provides a familiar desktop that anyone familiar with windows should be able to figure out with relative ease. and it seems endlessly configurable compared to the other DEs of a similar scope. half the fun of a new XFCE install is modifying it to your needs.

Hi, one of the very interesting features that I used when I was still using xfce is the trouble-free arrangement of several panels on one edge (e.g. bottom). For example, I didn't like that when I enlarged a panel, the icons for wifi bluetooth etc became terribly large, and I couldn't just set the size to just the individual icons in one panel. So I created a second panel that connected to the first one, where I just had system icons reduced in size. In the same way, you can add a task manager that you want to be in the middle of the screen.

As someone who has used Xfce more than I have ever used GNOME or KDE: I find this video really interesting. I'm switching over to KDE now after years with Xfce because of cosmetic reasons finally getting to me (and I was shocked to learn KDE was lighter on computing resources than Xfce), and it's been really interesting to see the differences between workflows on the two environments. Hi Nicco! Thank you for looking into Xfce. I am a happy user of Xfce on Arch Linux. Note that what you was looking at is not a vanilla version of Xfce, but a very much themed one.
To be honest, Xfce in it's bare form is pretty ungly, especially with that default mouse wallpaper (the little mouse mascot is cute, but colors are bad, lol).
It's almost like Xfce screams at you to style it, like a blank painting. However, that's also the point from where you will discover how many fantastic themes there exist for it. It's super easy to do.
Also note that the application launcher that you where looking at is the Whisker Menu. You really want to use that. It has a great search function and tracks your mouse when navigating through the menu's, very much like KDE.
Xfce's default application menu is much more primitive and has been removed from the desktop you where seeing.

I've been using Xfce for over 10 years. And yes, the option to move the panel is not very intuitive. I do think your sense of it feeling out of date is resolved by a bit more customizing. Choosing a good gtk theme and icon set often is all that's required. Or adding transparency to the panel. You can also set the wallpaper with ristretto, the Xfce image viewer. Also, the expanding separators aren't immediately intuitive, but once you catch on, they work great. Xfce users don't use the built-in app menu, they use the much nicer whisker menu, with menulibre for menu editing. The right click on the desktop app menu is great.
Lastly, Xfce is fast and super stable. Apps snap open. And it just never crashes or screws up. I like thunar and the Xfce terminal a lot. Xfce does its job and stays out of the way.
Ok, ps.... When I use Reaper, it uses a key binding Xfce uses (alt drag) to resize windows. I have a script that uses xfconf to toggle that on or off. The same is possible for a lot of Xfce options.

Xfce doesn't actually provide a lot of stuff. It's basically got a few very basic apps, the panels, a window manager and a compositor, all using mostly dead standard GTK widgets. It's pretty much intended to be fully customized to your liking rather than really providing any sort of standard experience. It's modular and super easy to swap out parts too, so you can replace the WM with Compiz, or keep the WM but use xcompmgr, use third-party bars, use third-party applets. By default it looks like Gnome 2 with a dock, it's kind of a throwback to Ubuntu 7.10.
It makes a fantastic base for older systems or people that highly customize their DEs/WMs but want to keep some sane defaults for handling some basic things. Used Xfce for years until KDE 5 came around and started being usable again after the disaster that was KDE 4. I used the same theme, so it ended up looking pretty similar in the end.

I can't bring myself to care about looks. Like, when I am using a computer my nose is stuck into a web browser, a chat client, a video game - _anything_ but the desktop, rarely. I also find GTK FMs easier to understand but that's just because I'm a GNOME boy having started on Ubuntu in '09. I just want my stuff to work; maybe it's because I'm old-school, but also compositing is crap on much older hardware.
I like semi-opaque windows and that's just about it. I modified Discord to have BetterDiscord's Ace Editor use a light blur while being see-through if focused. That's about it. I care little else about appearance, but I occasionally have fun playing with Discord. Ultimately the computer is a tool, and I don't care if my hammer looks ugly.

To be honest: it is harder to disable activating menu in KDE from pushing Meta key than it should be. If you have a lot of actions on Meta + Something key then you would probably like to make menu accesible with Alt+F1 and leave Meta alone.

I like XFCE because it works on very old hardware. However, on almost any piece of hardware from the last five years, it's pretty much a waste. KDE with full effects gave me much less headache than XFCE with some transparency effects, in the latter case the computer suffers so much that it could end up giving birth to another one. I prefer to use Mate, if the hardware is weak but not old.

I use to be attracted to distros by WALLPAPER-- before I had the good sense to realize I can CHANGE that any time I like.. ha. I now just rotate my 10,000 photos from movies, tv, travels, etc. through the slideshow on kde-- changing every hour or so sometimes- other times every 24 hours.. XFCE looks GOOD-- just reminds me of Linux Mint when I first started using Linux. I just don't know how to customize it like I want.. but- I'm starting to get so that I don't care about the customization so much... I tried several arch - and had issues with ALL of them- so I'm not giong to install something I have to wORK to get it so IT works-- because about the time I get it figured out- they CHANGE it (updates every 5 minutes is RIDICULOUS-- stupid)...

The problem is that Xubuntu insists in this awful theme for more than 10 years, I agree that Greybird is "coherent", but I believe that Xubuntu really needs a overhaul on the UI.
You can make XFCE look really good and modern without many issues, and the advantage of XFCE over KDE is that you can modify it as you wish without the fear of having bugs.
