On a consumer TV, there's no native signal pretty much ever :-\ The signal always has to be converted into something else one or more times. You're actually better off with component on consumer TVs since it reduces the number of conversions and because most TVs are calibrated that way anyway.
BNC isn't a type of signal it's just the name of the connector. You can transmit many signals through a BNC connector. If your referring to VGA vs component vs RGB (generic term) they are mostly the same. all are forms of RGB just transmitted over different methods at different htz. They are virtually all the same quality and it would be very hard for the human eye to tell the difference though I would say of the three component is maybe the poorest quality of the three though still very good.

0blivi0n100 Oh nice! I guess I'll start checking craigslist daily. I want one like this because it supports 480p and I'm not sure if there's other crts this size (or close) that do the same
CRT 480p EDTV's are very hard to find. I've really struggled to find a CRT that does 480p for systems like ps2, GameCube and Xbox. this monitor does it fine though so if that's what your after the PVM14L5 will fit the bill. they do seem to be pretty uncommon and sought after PVM's though so good luck. They make a 20 inch version that I'd love to get my hands on.
I might have scored a PVM-14L5! It's missing one of the plates in the back for the add-on boards though. Just wondering, do these normally come with boards installed behind the plates? Or are they just empty
well they should have blanks covers over then slots if they do not have a card installed but that's shouldn't hurt anything. also stick there are no cards installed. mine didn't have any.

well i picked up some kind of... monitor.. from the streets today. there's no RGB :( would composite on these types of devices at least look somewhat nicer than a consumer set's composite? x)
In general yes, but I suppose it may depend. I assume an early PVM from the 80's or a low end PVM may look worse than a really high end consumer TV with a 3D comb filter but in general a PVM should look better even over composite. They usually just had better parts, better tubes and better phospers.

I don't know of any. when I bought mine if was from a guy that knew a little about PVMs and he had pre calibrated it for me so I never had to mess with it. I do know some models have pots inside the case you can adjust. did you go through all the menu option? I should also advise you in case you don't know. there are parts inside CRT's that hold onto a lot of electrical voltage even when powered off and unplugged. messing around inside the case can potentially kill you so make sure you take precautions and do research.
Just to let you know, is not that RGB cant support progressive, is just most devices didnt came with that feature trough their RGB inputs. Talking about connections dude SCART could even support up to 1080p , but existing HDMi connectors as a standard, why they would work on adding that feature?
well, I believe the audio input is mono but yes, it will accept a yellow composite input, and it looks really good as well. line A in can be composite or S-video and line B in is composite. You'll need BNC to RCA adaptors just like if you were using component but obviously you would only need 1 since its just a single cable.
@@AncientElectronics I just acquired a Sony Trinitron PVM-1271Q and have no idea what do buy for it. Only thing i have at the moment cable wise are rca cables and 4 of those BNC tops

+Situations103 Yhea, I wasn't centering things right so that part was a little out of frame. I use PC speakers and they work pretty well. First when you get your SCART to PVM cable make sure it has RCA stereo breakout cables like this one www.ebay.com/itm/Female-RGB-Euro-SCART-to-4-BNC-Audio-Cable-Sony-PVM-Sega-Genesis-SNES-Neo-Geo-/191727739158?hash=item2ca3dd2116:g:tQQAAMXQAEFSD-4B mine break out at the SCART connector but it doesnt matter. then all you need is a female stereo RCA to female 1/8 audio jack and your all set. I used two male to female RCA adaptors for my RCA cables and then once they were both female I just used one of these www.ebay.com/itm/3-5mm-1-8-Stereo-Y-Adapter-Audio-Cable-Female-Mini-Jack-to-2-RCA-Male-Adapter-/321795060187?hash=item4aec7af1db:g:dVoAAOSwHnFVkPg5 then just plugged the PC speaker jack into that.
+Chloe Nakahara the "official" RGB cables are exactly like the third party ones. the only difference is perhaps build quality. The method for connecting them and the results are exactly the same. SCART and 21 pin RGB both transmit audio but you will need to separate the audio lines from the RGB cable as I did in the video. that's why you need a SCART or 21 pin RGB to BNC cable with RCA stereo audio break out cables.
every PVM I've ever seen also support composite and almost always S-video as well. if that's what your referring to. for S-video you don't need anything, you just plug it into the monitors S-video in port. for composite (the yellow RCA connector) you will likely need a RCA to BNC adapter which are like $1 on eBay.

I lucked out with my 14L5 and got it for under $100. The guy I got it from knew what it was to, he just didn't care. Your right about the prices but I've gotten lucky and found a few PVM and other monitors for good deals. unfortunately most of them have one issue or another and just sit in storage. I use PC speakers and a SCART to BNC adaptor that has breakout cables for the RCA stereo. The built in speaker is okay but hooking up a few decent PC speakers that are a good deal better is cheap and easy so why not.
Hello, quick question. By chance have you used this monitor with a PS2? And if so do you think it's worth getting one mainly to use with a ps2? Thanks!
I've never played my PS2 on this particular monitor but I'm sure it would look great on it. I have played my PS1 on it though and it does look really good. For me the PS2 generation and later are really best experienced on a larger screen, at least 19 or 20 inch but that's just my preference.
@@AncientElectronics I see, thank you very much for the input, then if you had a choice, would you go with something like a 20M2MDU even thought it lacks 16:9 over this? Thanks again!
None of them have RF as far as I know but they all have composite and most have S-video as far as I've seen. for composite though they all use BIN connectors so you would need a super cheap BIN to RCA adapter. for RF only systems like the Atari 2600 and such you could get a RF demodulator that takes in RF and turns it into composite though you still get RF image quality. most post NES systems output RGB natively such as Master System, SNES, Genesis, Saturn, PS, PS2 ect. pretty much any other system can be modded to output RGB but that can get pricey unless your doing the mods yourself.
technically the GC can do RGB. the PAL version outputs it natively I think and the early NTSC ones do component which technically is a form of RGB...but yea, the component cables are crazy expensive because they use a special chip in them. You won't have any issues finding a PVM or most professional monitors that have S-video. They pretty much all support it.
I just found one of these and the guy is asking for $475 minimum. It’s working perfect according to the pictures and videos. Do you think it’s worth it?
That's a tough question since it really depends a lot on you and if its worth it for you. The price itself from what I know of PVM prices these days isn't crazy. It's certainly not a deal and may even be slightly high. I think last time I checked $400 was the average going price for a good condition 14L5 but then prices probably have gone up since then. It is a phenomenal monitor, basically a BVM that can do component, RGB and up to 1080i. Keep in mind it is only 14 inchs and although i'm fine with that size you may not be so if your not planning to view this monitor from fairly close you really want to consider that. See if you can talk them down to $400 if you can.
Ancient Electronics Thanks. He was asking 550 and 475 was his lowest. There’s one on eBay currently listed for 570 not including shipping. I feel like if I miss it, price will only keep going higher for this specific model. I really want to 20” but that’s going for over a grand.

I have a PVM 14L2 and am having trouble connecting my wii through component. Any suggestions?
What issues are you having?
I need this rgb euro scartbnc cable but its not available in my country :(
you cant order one off the internet? they aren't very expensive or hard to ship.
i think i need to , its the only way to get this :D
Is the quality is better on bnc (bnc vs vga)?
BNC isn't a type of signal it's just the name of the connector. You can transmit many signals through a BNC connector. If your referring to VGA vs component vs RGB (generic term) they are mostly the same. all are forms of RGB just transmitted over different methods at different htz. They are virtually all the same quality and it would be very hard for the human eye to tell the difference though I would say of the three component is maybe the poorest quality of the three though still very good.
So which one is better to buy? VGA to RGB EURO SCART? or BNC to RGB EURO SCART?
Whats the cord used at 13:42 in your right hand?
I think it's just a 1/8th female jack to RCA stereo.
@@AncientElectronics I can't figure this out cor nothing. I've got a sony pvm, and cant figure out how to get sound. The reddit posts just dont do it. I'm a visual learner and nobody has a video on how to actually connect desktop speakers to a sony pvm

My wii's Component cables are have two RED one GREEN one BLUE and one WHITE. How do I connect them?
The red and white cables are for audio, so you either have to buy a stereo < mono RCA adapter or you hook it up to your speakers. The other red, green and blue cables are the YPbPr video cables.
Great Tutorial
Could be made available where you bought the BNC connectors for component cable wii ??
Which cable / connector you use to sound on the wii? i have pvm 1354q
+kaed wood thank you. I also have a 1354Q, great monitor. its very similar to the 14l5 except it doesn't do 480P and up and its 1 inch smaller screen. on the other hand the built in sound is a little better and I prefer the control panel buttons on the front bottom to the digital menus of the 14l5. the connectors for the Wii component I just used simple BNC to RCA connectors and then a standard Wii component cable. www.ebay.com/itm/10-x-BNC-Male-to-RCA-Female-Jack-Plug-Coax-Cable-Adapter-Connector-Camera-CCTV-/190850312278?hash=item2c6f90a856:g:sNgAAOxyzfNRq-AFfor sound on my PVM I use external PC speakers but you can always use the built in mono speakers on the PVM.
+0blivi0n100 thanks for the feedback. where can I find the Scart RGB cable for wii ntsc USA and the scart connector?
+kaed wood only European PAL Wii's can output RGB via SCART. your really better off just using component. the signal is virtually the same thing.
+0blivi0n100 Thank you for the info!
Thank you so much for this video. Subscribed ;)
I have a quick question wondering if anybody can help me with this. I'm looking at a Cvm3501 barco broadcast monitor and wanted to know if I will get the same result as a PVM broadcasting monitor? If anybody can help me with this I would greatly appreciate it I need to make a decision by tomorrow.
Thanks!
Where did you find one of these? 14" seems perfect for me but I couldn't find any on the internet (apart from the expensive 20" model)
locally. I just kept hitting up Craigslist and eventually one popped up and I messaged the guy before anyone else did. thats how I've found all 3 of my PVM's here though latly competition has become fierce and supply has dried up so you'd have to be real lucky these days. a 20" model is actually what i'm looking for. the 20 incher I have has issues.
Or are they just empty
well they should have blanks covers over then slots if they do not have a card installed but that's shouldn't hurt anything. also stick there are no cards installed. mine didn't have any.
really awesome model. i do have this and for sure it great monitor. And yes it does support 720p :)
+yukin PC I just wish I could get my hands on a 20 inch model
+0blivi0n100 Yeah me too but at the price i paid, i do not complain. Got a 14L5 and a 14L2 at 100$CAD for both in near mint condition.
@@AncientElectronics - I have a 21" JVC & going up stairs is a problem, - but going down stairs is terrifying. - 5.5kg seems more practical. - can you use this with a PC?
Wait - its 17kg? - ok bigger than I thought.
@@brentgreeff1115 the 14L5? as for using with a PC yes and no. your going to need a video card in your PC that has a composite/S-video or component output. Some older video cards do but I don't see that on newer cards anymore, it's also sub-par quality compared to VGA and DVI/HDMI. you could get a converter to convert VGA to RGB/Component or HDMI to RGB/ component
well i picked up some kind of... monitor.. from the streets today. there's no RGB :( would composite on these types of devices at least look somewhat nicer than a consumer set's composite? x)
In general yes, but I suppose it may depend. I assume an early PVM from the 80's or a low end PVM may look worse than a really high end consumer TV with a 3D comb filter but in general a PVM should look better even over composite. They usually just had better parts, better tubes and better phospers.
Can you please tell me what size the screws are on the outer shell? I found one that didn't have any screws, and I'm trying to find what to replace them with
How do you adjust the geometry and calibrate the image on the screen? My image needs to be shifted to the side but can't find a way to do it. I couldn't even figure out how to take the monitor apart. Do you know of a separate calibration unit I can attach? Thanks in advanced!
Is it possible to connect the red, white and yellow cables to a PVM TV like this and if so how?
well, I believe the audio input is mono but yes, it will accept a yellow composite input, and it looks really good as well. line A in can be composite or S-video and line B in is composite.
@@AncientElectronics this monitor also lacks a s-video input... sadly.
What's the refresh rate of this model, does it flicker?
Can you explain what exactly you used to get the sound? That part was a little too complicated for me to follow :(
I have a Sony BVM 20F1U myself, and am having a hard time getting sound to work.
Thanks :)
I used two male to female RCA adaptors for my RCA cables and then once they were both female I just used one of these www.ebay.com/itm/3-5mm-1-8-Stereo-Y-Adapter-Audio-Cable-Female-Mini-Jack-to-2-RCA-Male-Adapter-/321795060187?hash=item4aec7af1db:g:dVoAAOSwHnFVkPg5
then just plugged the PC speaker jack into that.
But can i use the SNES factory RGB cable to the RGB input?
Will i get -Audio- when they are connected to the RGB input?
+Chloe Nakahara the "official" RGB cables are exactly like the third party ones. the only difference is perhaps build quality. The method for connecting them and the results are exactly the same. SCART and 21 pin RGB both transmit audio but you will need to separate the audio lines from the RGB cable as I did in the video. that's why you need a SCART or 21 pin RGB to BNC cable with RCA stereo audio break out cables.
So i don't need a SCART cable for when i start? So i cannot use the SNES RCA to the RGB? Thank u^_^
every PVM I've ever seen also support composite and almost always S-video as well. if that's what your referring to. for S-video you don't need anything, you just plug it into the monitors S-video in port. for composite (the yellow RCA connector) you will likely need a RCA to BNC adapter which are like $1 on eBay.
Thank you for the Excellent info!
p.s I luv that little Cutie dog i giggled Awww ^.^
no problem. he cant resist finding some way into the videos.
It's funny you say it's too small. I have a 19 inch and 9 inch pvm and find the 19 inch too big at times and the 9 inch too small
How is it hooking up a dreamcast through the toro? Do you use the scart or vga cable
johndee759 I don't gave a Toro. I assume it would look really good. I have my dreamcast hooked up to my 20 inch Diamondtron VGA monitor, it's just easier and looks great.
0blivi0n100 wow. Still this monitor is awesome.
It's basically BVM quality and probably about as good as it gets for the PVM. I'd love to get my hands on the 20 inch model.
0blivi0n100 right now the pvm Bvm market is blown up. 20 inch pvm bvm models go for a thousand . It's just insanity. How do you get the sound of your consoles. Do you use PC speakers or do you hook your consoles into the mono speaker of the pvm?
Thanks again!
quick question, do PVMs have composite and s video and RF because most of my consoles cant do rgb
None of them have RF as far as I know but they all have composite and most have S-video as far as I've seen. for composite though they all use BIN connectors so you would need a super cheap BIN to RCA adapter. for RF only systems like the Atari 2600 and such you could get a RF demodulator that takes in RF and turns it into composite though you still get RF image quality. most post NES systems output RGB natively such as Master System, SNES, Genesis, Saturn, PS, PS2 ect. pretty much any other system can be modded to output RGB but that can get pricey unless your doing the mods yourself.
kay thanks because i have a ton of systems that i would like to hook up to a crt that cant do rgb (like GCN for instance) thankfully they do s video
technically the GC can do RGB. the PAL version outputs it natively I think and the early NTSC ones do component which technically is a form of RGB...but yea, the component cables are crazy expensive because they use a special chip in them. You won't have any issues finding a PVM or most professional monitors that have S-video. They pretty much all support it.
yeah those a cables are way to expensive, but i do have an early gamecube, but i use s video
@@elcross77 If its worth it to you then Id say go for it. It really is an awesome monitor. I've been keeping an eye out for a 20L5 as well.
I have the 14L4 and my PS2 is coming out all green. Is anyone else having this problem? I've tried everything (i think)
is it hooked up via RGB or component? does the PC/2 and cable work fine on another TV? are you sure you don't have the G and B cables switched up or anything like that? Do other systems display okay on this PVM?
thanks for your reply, i really appreciate it. i've not actually looked into all of your suggestions so I'll do that and get back to you. all the best
i've tried with an xbox and it didn't work. tried both RGB and Component too :/

$80?! Holy shit these things are 10x the price now.
They were going for a few hundred even when I picked this one up. I just got lucky. The guy I bought it off of knew what he had. he was a RGB and retro gaming enthusiast he just felt people were asking too much for the monitors and $80 is what he felt it was worth. when I picked it up he even commented he felt the $400 the last one he saw go for was ridiculous. I was not going to argue with him :)
