  • I got hold of a Professional Video Monitor and explore it in this video and go through some types of video signals, what the BNC connections it has are and what can be connected to it. And I test it with my commodore Amiga 500. A PVM something i've been thinking about getting for half a year now and I got a good deal on the Sony CRT PVM 9041QM field monitor. In this video I also explore how to record a CRT screen using my DSLR.

    Thank you very much for the epilipsy warning. While flickering images do not have any effect on me, they do trigger seizures for my partner, and if she had been in the room I would have been able to pause the video. I can't find the words to express my gratitude, I wish more people did things like that, so thank you so very much!

    I was looking for instructions on how to connect an Amiga to a Sony PVM, as I got one in pristine condition recently for a decent price (Sony PVM 1444QM). The BNC to SCART cable has just arrived, I`m looking forward exploring a retro gamers next level experience. Thank you very much for this great video😊

    Same problem with me filming on camera and still haven't mastered the settings and took ages to figure all the connections and leads ... the old one I used worked fine till it blow up ... so happy you got one ... maybe a Commodore/Phillips monitor next .. still can't work out which one is better ... great video and that amiga and the psp looks stunning

      Try shtuter speed 50 and for the Moiré effect, put it a very slight touch out of focus using the manual focus ring (if you're using a DSLR that is) .. this is all what I learned when doing this video and It came out as 10:00
      I'm very happy with the result, once in a while, a flickry line flies past to say hello, but meh, adds to the CRT charm :oD
      Thanks Adam!

    Sony PVMs are great CRT monitors for retro. I have some of them (9'' and 14''). Best of 9'' models are BVMs (with more scanlines than PVMs) and some of higher models of PVMs (with Trinitron HR tubes).
    10 of them was used in my last music videoclip as monitor room scenography :)
    Take 14'' if you have occasion... is great for C64, Amiga etc.
    Regards!

    I'm wondering how this screen compares to the original Commodore 1084S CRT monitor which is what I currently use now. With RGB the image is super sharp and the colours are amaing. I even bought an HDMI to S Video converter accompanied with an S video to luma chroma adapter and I can use my 1084S as a second monitor for my macbook haha.

    I too have recently gotten back to CRTs again for a little project. Yeah not only do they hold a lot of power but also give off some nasty X-ray on the backside. Still thou they are always the best for analog video to be viewed the way it was supposed to be seen. Especially with videogames where zero latency is very important. Congrats to this little Trinitron. Really the best CRTs you can get. It's amazing how cheap they are right now.

  • @StRoRo
    @StRoRo 6 лет назад +1

    I had to pause the video to take in all the wonderful detail of your planned setup, I had a good laugh at the sink!
    The technical term for the patterns when filming a TV with a DSLR is called Moiré. The best way to limit it find the best zoom or distance from the screen to film and then make it larger if you have to in post. Also experiment filming the screen at 720p and zooming during post.
    Personally I would rather see a sharper image and see moiré than something that is out of focus, but that's the amateur photographer in me. ;)
    It sounds like the setup you need is like what I have at the moment. I have my consoles going to a 6X2 SCART matrix (6 inputs 2 independent outputs). One output goes straight to a CRT TV and the other output goes to the OSSC. That OSSC then goes to a HDMI 1to2 splitter. One HDMI signal goes to my LCD and the other goes to the capture device.

    • @MsMadLemon
      @MsMadLemon  6 лет назад

      Thanks for the tips to reduce 'Moiré' ! I did discover to very very slightly take it off focus. yes the out of focus look annoys me unless it's meant to be intentional, so it may not be so amateurish ;o)
      But after 4 tries, I got the best result with the jumping jack son comparison at 10:00
      I wish I had a scart matrix and an OSSC i'm impressed with them. I'll have to make do with modding a scart joiner cable for the moment at least :o)

    I've seen others picking up these professional monitors before. I thought connecting them would be much more of a hassle bit it seems alright. The good thing too is that they stack really well! You could build an entire wall and save on heating at the same time :)

    • @MsMadLemon
      @MsMadLemon  6 лет назад

      Hahah that would be quite a heater ;o) .. and even cooler would be if you could wire and sync them all to show one giant image.
      I did dive into the unknown to be honest but it wasnt as bad as I initially thought either :o)

    • @TheHighlander71

      Hmm, there's an idea. What would a circuit look like that upscaled the output of an Amiga to more than 1 display?

    • @MsMadLemon
      @MsMadLemon  6 лет назад

      I actually wouldnt know where to begin, I'm guessing the screens would need their dedicated video processor maybe.

    • @Arkathtoo
      @Arkathtoo 6 лет назад

      MsMadLemon I’m probably preaching to the choir but, to sync up multiple video monitor you just daisy chain them.
      Rather than using your output device (your amiga for example) you use the video out on the back of the monitor to another monitor.
      As long as your BNC or RCA cables are well shielded and the runs between monitor stay short there should be little noticeable differences between pictures. The only caveat is you can’t easily switch between inputs. Either you do it all component or all composite. Since the inputs/outputs are on separate boards I think?
      I’m sure you could middle man something to change signals between two but then you have sync and more issues to worry about. 🤯

  • @KRAFTWERK2K6
    @KRAFTWERK2K6 6 лет назад +7

    The pattern on the monitor is the "moire" of the shadowmask of the monitor. To avoid it you simply need to slightly soften the focus of the camera till it's gone but still sharp enough to look good. Unfortunately CRTs and LCD TVs both share the same issue when you film them with a HD camera. You either see the shadowmask or the LCD matrix. Using a vintage prime-lense also helps a lot too because they aren't too sharp like most todays lenses. (edit: typo removed)

    YAYYYYY Maddi has a 15kHz crt for her retro computers and consoles now :) And it's a PVM too! Welcome to the world of high quality crts ^_^ aren't they delightfully sharp and vivid?
    Capturing CRT footage is so damn hard -_- seriously.
    Great thing with the psp on pvms is that, by toggling the overscan/underscan button to overscan, you've got a picture that fills a pretty big amount of the screen real estate. Not all of it of course, but better than on a fixed display panel.
    Also, ps1 games through the psp will fill the whole screen on a crt! and they'll be true 240p too (and not 480i)! Just like it would out of a ps1/ps2.

  • @GabrielAndroczky
    @GabrielAndroczky 6 лет назад +2

    :))) the "whatever to call it" is called "Moiré"... that's a natural effect of the trinitron mask (or actually any "fabric"-like surface that has a visual resolution conflicting with your camera's resolution)... if you superimpose 2 whatever grids or loose fabric and see through while twisting them relative to each other, you'll experience the moiré with your eyes as well :) The wonders of optics :D

    Any idea of what may be causing this?

  • @preferredimage
    @preferredimage 6 лет назад +1

    The weird lines are most likely the shadowmask from behind the front glass of the CRT. knocking it out of focus will help as you've found. also try dropping the resolution of the camera as this will help scale out the issue while staying in focus). I have lost count of the number of PVM's we've binned at work! CRTs can hold a charge for months so always be careful around the tube (especially if you need to lift up the cathod terminal (the big fat red wire that looks like a sucker on the side of the tube).

    • @MsMadLemon
      @MsMadLemon  6 лет назад

      Thanks Mat, yes I figured they were from the shadowmask and eventually and painfully learned in the video how to get rid of them lol but I just never knew what it was called. Thanks to commenters i now know it's "Moiré"
      And yes, indeed, thats why as I said CRTs are scary things.

    "I don't know what to call it" - it's some kind of Moire pattern, also called aliasing.
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moir%C3%A9_pattern
    photographylife.com/what-is-moire
    It's caused by the by the very regular pattern of your camera's pixels interfering with the regular pattern of pixels on the screen.
    Your DSLR has an anti-aliasing filter which works simply by blurring the image slightly , but it only works for stills not video, because of the way that video is down sampled from the sensor before it's recorded (it's 'pixel binned' rather than being properly down samples).

    Nice scanlines - so retro and arcade :) The grey colours of the stones are more correct on the CRT but of course it's depends on the settings of the upscaled picture. The upscaler looked nice in other ways - maby less flickering and calmer for the eyes when it's recorded.

    Lol, "sink".. :)) The music in the beginning immediately made me picture the spinning "Paranoimia" logo, haha.. It was my 'Shadow of the Beast' game, I remember. I usually let that cracktro play for a while, because of that awesome tune!!
    Your new toys just keep coming.. :) I've really become an LCD guy, but I know CRT have it's advantages. No annoying "frame skipping" and super smooth mouse movements. And for some people, it's just necessary to get a correct retro atmosphere.
    Wow, the PSP.. Never thought of using an external screen for that. I still have the first original phat PSP in black. It's in a modded state, also for the sake of emulation and such. I remember playing a lot of point-and-click adventures using ScummVM (scummvm.org). I see you have "Mercury" on it as well. A lovely game, but the later levels were just too deep for my gray matter, lol.. :o) "Magical Sound Shower" is also my fave music from Out Run, by far. But it has to be the original one from the 80's arcade, and not that flute thing, hehe.. ;o)

    • @MsMadLemon
      @MsMadLemon  6 лет назад +1

      Lol i'm prone to doing goofy drawings, it just sinks into the grey matter easier (no pun intended lol)
      I don't mind LCD at all, in fact it has it's advantages. One thing i do not miss about CRT is being on Soundtracker pro 2 for hours, freakin blitzes your eyes and gives you a headache. Games i would veer more to a high grade CRT like this PVM or a BVM.. as you can notice at 10:00 the tiles he's jumping on have more of a 3D pronounced effect on the CRT. it seems to have some unique quality to it.
      Ah yes you had the black phat PSP! I had the original white one. they are great for mobile emulation!
      Hahah flute thing, it's a saxophone lol and I agree, I do much prefer the original 80s tune, arcade or even C64 ... The Amiga one is disappointing, they could have done the music better on Amiga.. then again the could have done the entire freakin game better, the port is nasty, as if it's all been cellotaped together!

      @ Casual Commodore: Be aware that the video output was not available on the PSP1000 "fat" model. But the PSP2000 and PSP3000 (both slim) had it. And i think so did the PSP Go.

    • @CasualCommodore
      @CasualCommodore 6 лет назад +1

      Yes, I see the difference. I love me some sharp pixels, but the clarity of the LCD kind of ruins that 3D effect. Bigger objects may look better on CRT, while smaller objects and text (like in Soundtracker) look more clear on LCD. Perhaps your headache comes from the brain trying to fill in the hard-to-see visual details, all the while you trying to be creative as well. Maybe it's all not that simple, but it's a way of seeing it I guess? ;)
      Lol, god dammit, it's a Saxophone.. :) And totally agree on the quality of Out Run on Amiga. At the time, the thought of Out Run on Amiga was sooo intriguing! What could go wrong..? It's gonna be beautiful! Not.. Always saw that game as a disgraceful piece of poop software! It's funny because on Amiga, the initial title picture, speech and dramatic music, really gets you pumped!! Then you get to the "game", and thinking.. "What the hell, is this a joke??!?!".. Hell, the C64 version plays much better! Should have been the other way around..

      @CasualCommodore 6 лет назад

      @MsMadLemon  6 лет назад +1

      Yes that's right, I think yo're pretty much on the ball really ;o) not to mention the brain tries to fill in for the flickering also, even if we dont see it, we can feel it hence the headaches and eyestrain.
      Yes, Amiga is clearly capable, look at the lotus trilogy, its actually better in my opinion, even than the arcade outrun...Yes even the c64 one plays better, (it has 2 i beleive right? outrun and turbo outrun) I get this feeling they did the ports so bad on Amiga and the others platforms deliverately.. I mean come on it's so nasty on the Amiga but it's almost identical to Arcade on the Megadrive? lol something fishy going on there!

    I was watching a Commodore 1084 monitor on eBay recently. I know they can sell for up to £100 quite often, but this one sold for over £200. It's crazy how much people are willing to pay for retro stuff. And don't even get me started on Lego :-D
    Makes me wish I hadn't sold a lot of my stuff back then, although if I still had them the monetary value wouldn't matter as I doubt I'd part with them. It's funny how that works.

    Super nice monitor!
    I have a slightly bigger one with just few more connections, but pretty much the same as yours.
    Unfortunately mine wasn't well packed by the company that sold it to me, and it arrived with a crack on the plastic on the lower left corner.
    Though fortunately the monitor works perfectly, and the quality is absolutely superb! :-D

    I'm looking to hopefully buy a 20-inch PVM-equivalent by JVC soon. Unfortunately it only has composite input by default so unless I'm lucky and it has an RGB input card installed I won't be able to connect the Amiga to it since it only outputs RGB even on the SCART. It will work great for the C128/C64 however since those ONLY output composite video (and RF) so those C64 demos will look great at least :)

    Maddi, be sure not to operate that monitor without the metal lid on!! It is very important, because that unit generates x-rays (yes, x-rays, it's not a typo) which are kept from escaping the unit by the metal casing. Be careful! Love

    I see you have both Burnout games for the PSP. What do you think of them? I've only played the Burnout games in emulators, but personally I love them. They just seem to play better than most any other more modern arcade racer. Plus, it's really satisfying to be able to run the computer racers off the track after the number of times that computer cars have run ME off the track in so many other games.
    Any chance you could make a video playing one of them? :)
    Also, have you played any of the PS2/Xbox games?
