Hi to all funk fans! No,I've never recorded on an official Slave album.I recorded with them in 1977 through 1979 at the house of music in NJ.Some of the tracks I recorded was used on Aurra's 1rst album. Mark Adams and I along with Slave members are on that album.I'm only on Aurra's 1rst album.I'm also a member of Young & Company and Steve Arrington's Hall Of Fame.I'm also included on a bunch of Slave compulation Cds released by Atlantic Records.Don't stop the Funk!Buddy Hankerson
As a bass player, dude, I gotta go off on my own and figure out ways to suggest extended chord with a double stop like that at the end. Thank you for showing me that...
God bless you! Wish you were there when the funk was the music of choice for Black America(and anybody else who "saw the light" of this music), about 35 to 50 years ago; it's all over now(the movement)but the funk will never die-thanks to people like you, the new and younger generation who will continue to see the light and embrace this wonderful music that came from my generation! 12-8-23.
Fender was king then-still is in my opinion; now only if they would have the vision to go forward like some of the other bass makers and make a 6-string Jazz and/or Precision-passive pickups, like the original also... 12-8-23.
Hey Darryl!!! We sure had great times back then. I miss all of you. You're always with me in heart. Thanks for finding me, lets stay in touch.Wishing you the best always!!! Your friend,Buddy Hankerson
Unfortunately the people that controlled the music industry knew that decades ago-and killed the Funk-and every other music(Pop-R&B-Soul-Rock-Blues, Jazz, etc.) that used to feed and stimulate, by bringing in Disco and Rap(Hip-Hop)-and suppressing the other genres as mentioned above! Why? Someone in the record industry, as it used to be called, would have the answer to that question, more than I! And I miss the Funk-and all of the rest of the good music that used to come from both Black and white artists, from over four decades ago! And have you noticed-it's been all about Hip-Hop pretty much for the last FORTY YEARS, and nothing else? There's never been a period in American history where music didn't change, every ten years, since the music industry was first created, about a 100 years ago, but that's how it's been now, for about the past forty-five years-why? It's deliberate, that's all I can say about it... 12-6-24.
This is how it used to be with some of the baddest bass players back in the day, when funk was king, before the music industry destroyed the funk movement, and Buddy Hankerson was definitely one of those bad cats! I mean the new cats got chops up the a__ today-but they don't know how to bring it like this cat and so many others did back then! The best I can put it is that it was a different "spirit" and music, that motivated and inspired the playing-not like the musicians of today... 12-8-23.
I remember sitting down for about an hour with the intent of getting the lick @ :40 ... i got the notes... but after listening to myself, decided maybe only Buddy should play those notes, in that order (and graciously put my bass down).
maybe one day i might figure out how to groove & swing my bass so all the notes fall well behind the beat ,, so much feel going on creating its on tone ,, awesome ,,
Crazy, I used to take lessons from Dave and I remember him playing this for me and asking if it was good enough for the video. I was only playing for about a year and of course thought it was amazing. 😂 Those were the days!
True that, although *some* bassists tend to lean more heavily on technique, particularly sight-readers. This video, though, is pure heart, causing spontaneous rhythmic body movements in the listener ;-)
stumble upon is actually magical. this is just the inspiration i needed to stop being mediocre at bass playing. i suddenly want to spend days at a time practicing and be great. like this guy. holy crap.
Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the funk! Attention bassists: you wanna know how to funk? Watch/listen to Buddy... over and over and over. There are other clips you'll find of pyrotechnic, multi-finger techniques, but *this* is the real funk right here.
He's playing a Fender Jazz bass. And not just playing it...he owns it. I bought a Jazz a few weeks ago (to go along with my two Precisions), and I'm dreaming if I think I'd ever play like that. It is always incredible to watch a master at work.
This video is from 1984 we were just getting out of high school. He is one of the coolest cats in the universe he might not remember but I had a bass that belonged to him for almost a year and that’s how I was able to dig in to music. I owe Buddy but I’m sure he wouldn't look at it that way.
My type of bass player-good solid groove playing-came from my favorite Group, Slave(out of whom came Steve Arrington's Hall Of Fame), along with Mark Adams(my favorite bass player along with Louis Johnson). This is how you "bring it" folks... 12-8-23.
He reminds me of my man "Randy" who played shortly with the Rick James band before joining ours for a West Pac tour of the Far East back in the day! He's is EXCELLENT!!!!!!!!!
Man I can only improv in short 4-measure phrases before having to "reset" and "catch the groove back." But you just keep the groove and funk going! INCREDIBLE!
IM NOT INTO THUMB STYLE BASS PLAYING IM MORE OF A FINGER PLAYER BUT YOU HAVE TO GIVE RESPECT TO BUDDY HANKERSON,S PLAYING STYLE AND WHAT HE DID WITH S L A V E - BACK IN THE DAY AND IS WITHOUT QUESTION ONE OF THE BEST FUNKSTERS TO EVER GRACE AN ELECTRIC BASS ON THE PLANET MAN I TIP MY HAT TO YOU BROTHER AND BLESS YOUR CREATIVE G R O O V E S .
look at his hands..they are moving faster than light...oh my god..this is soo amazingly awesome...i hope to become like this guy someday...pure unadulterated funk genius

Buddy Hankerson ? Really you ?
Did you record Are you Single and Make Up your Mind?
As a bass player, dude, I gotta go off on my own and figure out ways to suggest extended chord with a double stop like that at the end. Thank you for showing me that...

one of the original bass videos that made me pick up bass 10 years ago
And now you’re good? Where are your videos? Thanks man.
It doesn’t get more funky than this!! That 70’s Fender Jazz Bass growl is the funkiest bass tone ever produced . Nasty!!
Much Thanks!!!
Fender was king then-still is in my opinion; now only if they would have the vision to go forward like some of the other bass makers and make a 6-string Jazz and/or Precision-passive pickups, like the original also... 12-8-23.
Happiness is The Bass Player , that can play his Bass Guitar , like it's in fact a lead .

Dudes got real Sox Appeal.
I'm speechless! I play bass, but never in my life i'm gonna be this good
I played this 1,398,149 times...
The precision, timing and energy here ...This is ART! Fantastic.
One of the finest displays of mastery of an instrument and groove known to mankind.
Hey Darryl!!!
We sure had great times back then. I miss all of you. You're always with me in heart. Thanks for finding me, lets stay in touch.Wishing you the best always!!!

Funk music revolutionized the role of bass in pop music and gave it a place of nobility .

The funk is and always will be what the WORLD needs peroid.

Never can get enough of this video of you jammin' on the bass!
This is some of the rawest bad ass funk on the tubes ! SUPER BAD ASS !
This is the kind of funk I want to bring as a bass player. Gotta love the funk!

Timeless piece
this is hendrix as a bassist... i love those riffs...
Watching this video since 2008
Much Thanks!!!
Same here
especially the finger playing @ 0:40 & coming out of the chords into 1:20, cool bass lines!
Buddy H. is absolutely one the baddest, funkiest and groovalisticus bass player that ever walked on Earth! Much Love & Respect!
I remember sitting down for about an hour with the intent of getting the lick @ :40 ... i got the notes... but after listening to myself, decided maybe only Buddy should play those notes, in that order (and graciously put my bass down).
this is pure funk this is wat the world needs
Woooooooowiiiiiieeeee this is amazing!!!

Oh yes! Bad ass brother from another mother! That is awesome!
Feel sorry for his mum, the kid was born with the bass in his hands. Genius
How can you dislike this??? He is groovin
Excellent timing.....he masterd those ghost notes
Crazy, I used to take lessons from Dave and I remember him playing this for me and asking if it was good enough for the video. I was only playing for about a year and of course thought it was amazing. 😂 Those were the days!
Bass is 10% technique and 90% groove and feel.
True that, although *some* bassists tend to lean more heavily on technique, particularly sight-readers.
This video, though, is pure heart, causing spontaneous rhythmic body movements in the listener ;-)
Funk is generally that, might be different in other genres
stumble upon is actually magical.
this is just the inspiration i needed to stop being mediocre at bass playing. i suddenly want to spend days at a time practicing and be great. like this guy. holy crap.
i keep playing the part at 0:41 over and over
right! that finger tone is absolutely ridiculous. and to think this is b4 the emergence of all the 300$ preamps we have available now.
One of the most badass bass videos off all time. God bless the FUNK!
the man is killing it!
Me: You can't hold no groove if you ain't got no pocket.
This guy: Hold my beer
A word that I can think about this masterpiece is: PURE.
I played this to my mechanic... My car is now fixed
Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the funk!
Attention bassists: you wanna know how to funk? Watch/listen to Buddy... over and over and over. There are other clips you'll find of pyrotechnic, multi-finger techniques, but *this* is the real funk right here.
Damn thats funky, to many bass players focus to much on technique rather focus feeling and flow of the groove.
Almost every bassist these days tries to make some super technical and complex slap solo at 945bpm. Just sounds bad, though, in most cases.
That is true!!!
Technique is what makes it sound good.
JAMES ZOND DEM FEELS
same for guitarists
I don't know if I will ever be able to play like this. it certainly is something to shoot for
Makes me wanna go in the garage and build a car
How can someone dislike this?
I would have loved to hear this played on a musicman stingray which is fender on steroids damn!!!!!
Rob Anderson Facts!
I have a pre-EB Stingray and a 2012 SR5HS. I don't know that MM would be "better" but would certainly agree that'd it'd be "worth hearing"
Forget high speed slap bass!! this is so cool. Simple but but tastful. This is where its at!!!
Anyone that complains about slap playing on this bass is because they CAN"T DO IT!!!
Slappin Da Bass!
this video should have 22 millions views
"you're black, you can play bass." - cartman
U Damn Right !
Sounds Jamming 🎉
Rock n roll to !
Well.. if you feel that way then YES WE DO
i found this about a month ago and not a day goes by when i don't watch this. so epic.
As impressive as that was the most impressive thing he did is use those double stops to suggest the full funk chord.
He's playing a Fender Jazz bass. And not just playing it...he owns it. I bought a Jazz a few weeks ago (to go along with my two Precisions), and I'm dreaming if I think I'd ever play like that.
It is always incredible to watch a master at work.
I could sit on that groove like a big comfy hammock, this i what bass is made for
Maybe the best bass groove I've ever heard.

This dude's killing with it this bass guitar on here
He reminds me of my man "Randy" who played shortly with the Rick James band before joining ours for a West Pac tour of the Far East back in the day! He's is EXCELLENT!!!!!!!!!
Best bass solo of all time imo.
Man I can only improv in short 4-measure phrases before having to "reset" and "catch the groove back." But you just keep the groove and funk going! INCREDIBLE!

Bow chika bow wow

Can hear the Louis Johnson influence
a sign of a good bassist: The ability to do the funk no matter what genre.
Every time I see this Funk Master, I get the chills. Freaking aweasome!!!
