I love the books and cheerful drawings from the 1940s. It was a tumultuous time with the war going on, and rations, but the women found a little peace of mind keeping their hands busy and making their homes prettier.
I absolutely love making edging. I quite often make them and make long pieces so that I can put them on the bottoms of cotton Victorian slips or I’ll make edging for white Muslin nightgowns. Thank you so much for doing the edgings and thank you to sweet Julie for donating the pattern books. What a wonderful gift. It helps watching you and being able to work right along with you. My next project is a lace trimmed corset and Victorian underpinnings. Thank you!!!😊❤
I just wish I could find all of my old patterns. I'm still looking for the rest of them. I hope they didn't get tossed. I tried to make a corset for myself because I have a broken back and thought it might help me sit up longer but I'm not good at sewing I'm much better at crocheting. I do want to try a slip and put one of the edgings on it! I think that would be a fun project and useful too. Best luck with that corset!
Wow, those came out beautiful! You are more than welcome. I was worried you wouldn't like them because they were mostly edgings, I'm glad I was wrong and you do like them. The book with the little girl on it has a very lacey dress for a little girl in it and I'm telling you, I shook that book so many times trying to make it!!! I never did get it made. Ha ha ha oh well maybe one day you will make that and I will finally get to make it and figure out what on earth I was doing wrong! Excellent video as always! You are such a great instructor and your humor is the best. I wove a scarf on my loom, about 75 inches long and thought it would look nice with a crocheted edge. About 4 hours in, I realized the pattern I picked had 11 rows ( i was on row 5) , I was only half done and I still had the other side to do. It now lives in a little pile under my loom awaiting winter. It looks nice, so far, but it may just get ripped out and maybe just do the short ends. No harm done, and no one will ever know. That said, I do think a crocheted edge adds a nice touch to most textiles. Cheers from Minnesota, where winters are long.

hiya! not only are they edgings but, i see headbands, gift ties and love letter ties. a project on the back burner is to crochet or knit kitchen, bathroom and guest room curtians - and now they will have edgings! xoxo
Being the fiber arts geek that I am, I just tried making the third edging with worsted weight and a 4 mm hook. I can so see this being used as a cuff on a sweater if you join up with a ch 3 and sl st to the middle of the first shell. Also as an edging for a shawl or afghan. Or even as a narrow lacy scarf in a beautiful soft yarn!
Hmmm.... why just wish this was fashionable? Let's MAKE it fashionable! I bet if all of us started edging our garments it'll get noticed. Since it's summer - i say we start edging the cuffs of shorts and capris, tank top shoulders, t-shirt sleeves and waists, jeans pockets.... so many unadorned thing to make lacy, colorful, and/or sparkly! We'll look back years from now to 2023 and say "yup, that was us that started that!" 😊
I love the third one you demonstrated in the video. Are there directions for attaching it to something like a handkerchief? My grandmother had some handkerchiefs that had crochet edgings, and I'd like to make some for myself.
So happy to have found you. These are absolutely beautiful. And you make it so easy to follow. Have you ever made "edging" for shelves? Saw the trailer for the movie "Dancing at Lughnasa" with Meryl Streep, set in the 1930's. There is beautiful crocheted "edging" on the shelf of the cottage.

I have been wanting to do Gothic chokers at an intermediate level but haven't found good patterns and I haven't been clear on what thread and hooks to buy. These are just what I was looking for to start out. I love to explore the vintage and historical stuff through hands on experience in any types of art and cooking but I hadn't thought of historical patterns being available. Where do you get these books? Have you ever seen any for the loom/weaving? I've been using a ridgid heddle loom but I was just given an upgrade to a 4 shaft loom and patterns haven't been as easy to find. Also do you have a recommendation on brands for lace crochet hooks? I've heard that some are not labeled as the correct size. I'll be subscribing to see more of this historical crochet.

I look forward to seeing more of these being made so we can follow..I don't know if books like these are even available here in Australia, so it looks like I'll have to save/follow your tutorials..
and to Julie, thanks..♥♥♥
These could make beautiful edging around the bottom of a top or sleeves too😊
Oh Wow! You explain this so well. I found your channel through Corrine at To Be Loved Treasures. My Nanna used to crochet like this and sadly all I learned to do was the basics but now I am going to definitely try this. New subscriber too. Thank you 🌷
Lovely I love edge crochet. I make a lot of civil war dresses and undergarments .
I just bought a couple books on lace. These are so pretty.
Just beautiful, can't wait to try them
You literally read my mind! I was looking to finish a top off thank you!
Awesome! 😁
These edgings are nice. I have a skirt I want to upcycle and am thinking of using one of these edgings.
Great idea!
Thank you for the demonstration of these very pretty edgings!
Just saw this, OMG Julie! Thank you so much for sharing this treasure with us! Can’t wait to get started…🙂
I would love to see some of these in the etsy store, they are all beautiful
hiya! not only are they edgings but, i see headbands, gift ties and love letter ties. a project on the back burner is to crochet or knit kitchen, bathroom and guest room curtians - and now they will have edgings! xoxo
Thank you for showing some of these edgings!!! So pretty!
My mom put beautiful crocheted edgings on handkerchiefs in the 1940s. This makes me want to find and display them.
The book is in such great condition for such an old publication, it’s amazing
Thank you so much for sharing.
Hmmm.... why just wish this was fashionable? Let's MAKE it fashionable!
I bet if all of us started edging our garments it'll get noticed. Since it's summer - i say we start edging the cuffs of shorts and capris, tank top shoulders, t-shirt sleeves and waists, jeans pockets.... so many unadorned thing to make lacy, colorful, and/or sparkly!
We'll look back years from now to 2023 and say "yup, that was us that started that!" 😊
I'm in.
Not for shelves, but I do have a video for a table runner end from 1899
@@justvintagecrochet thank you.
ISo cool!
Hi Corrina, love your channel! Can you do a video on how to line the Irish granny square purse you made? I want to make one for a friend 😊
Hi! those are not meant to be lined ( opera bags) , and I am sew challenged LOL
Im really sorry, but I have no doubt that yuo can find a video on here that will help
I really am sorry
Hi, if I want to work this gorgeous border directly onto my work, what should the stitch multiple of the work be? Thanks!
14:47 just leaving myself a timestamp for that third pattern !! cant wait to tackle it later today :)
These edgings are beautiful! But… how does it get attached to the item - sew it, crochet it? I’m wanting to apply it the a pillowcase.
The three edges you demonstrated are so beautiful. Question: I’m assuming that I would so them onto a towel, etc? I be never done anything like this.
yes, and it's very easy to do by hand :)
My grandma used crochet edgings to "fancy up" pillowcases that she embroidered.
