- Step back in time with this lacy and lovely Irish lace crochet cap/hat
This one is too pretty not to make!
I recommend #3 crochet cotton thread
and a 1.5-1.75mm hook ( A 2mm may even work as well )
the yarn and hook recommended in the pattern I found to be too big

This isnt a cap; its a work of art. Gorgeous!
Beautiful! I could see this as wedding, and bride's maids attire.
I like the brides maids attire idea!!!
The way this is made is so interesting. I thought this was crochet from the top down until you made the flower. But it is just four granny squares. To me all those little pekoes actually look like rose vines and thorns. As for joining, I just thought, can't you join in the pieces while you are making the last bit (round 8) where when you are making the pekoes you just put them inside of the other pekoes for the top/other side of the hat. I might try this. But it might be awhile for me to come back to see if it will work.
Oh, almost forgot, the size 9 hook which is slightly larger than a size 10 was used on size 30 or 20 thread. So would a size 10.
@Cynthia Howe I'm in the process, I've got three squares. It's complicated? But I attached one side while doing the 9th row. Then for the 3rd flower after it attached it to the top flower i went through and attached the side, then since the hat bottom didn't have the 9th row I was able to go from the 8th row of the side flowers, then off, and onto the bottom of the hat.
If that makes sense. 😅. There is some method to my madness I'm sure of it.
@Cynthia Howe also, I have to make more flowers since I am using a smaller needle and yarn. I've got five for thr band around the crown of the head. Then it should be four, then three. Sort of like a beanie. I should be able to make just the flower part and then stitch that to the top.
Love this hat! I'm in the middle of the titanic purse and now I've got to finish it because i want to make this! I love it so much. ❤
I'm a little late to this, but it occurred to me that you could use the larger hat you made as a decorative cover for any old plain knit cap (tobaggan). You could use different colors as a lining to coordinate with an outfit and it'd make it useful in cold weather
That's a great idea!
I just finished this. Sort of late to the game here, but I have something to add that may be useful to some.
I used the Fashion #3 and a size 1 steel hook. The first time I tried the join round and it worked, but was a real pain. The second one I made, I used the way you did joined it, with a small difference. Instead of chaining 3, I chained 5, picot, chain 1. That was an instruction from the joining round that made sense to me to keep the picot lace continue through out the piece.
The hat does fit a bit snug, but crochet stretches over time and I wanted it to fit for years to come. This hat is truly a work of art!
Thank you for all the wonderful patterns you find and share with us. It’s truly amazing and you are a gift ❤!
Thanks 4 sharing ❤️
Corrina, I LOVE Irish crochet and this dainty little hat is simply gorgeous! Thank you so much for your excellent tutorial!
As for the size - toss it in the washer. Even with cold water, the water & the motion pull the thread/stitches together to shrink it a tiny bit. Yes, I'm the irreverent one who "did up" my doilies by getting them wet, laying them face down on a thick towel & slowly ironing them dry! makes details pop!
Thank you!!! Fantastic advice ❤️
I love Irish Lace. But it is impossible in make.
I've always admired it from a far. It seems so complicated
You just made it seem "do-able".
Thank you.
Thanks so much 😊
This hat is beautiful
Wow I love this it matches the Titanic purse.i am working on a sweater .but putting it down to make this.
What a Good Job, I’m so impressed with you,
Thank you so much for that 🥰
I think the the join that you came up with might have changed the size... Not sure what the original join was but if you worked the last round while connecting the other squares it would turn out closer together. The size turned out great with the size 10 thread though. Beautiful job, soooo pretty! ❤
We have bigger heads here in Ireland hun, not kidding you lol x
Beautiful thicker hair rather than larger head.😊
THAnk you
So pretty!
What a BEAUTY ❤❤❤I absolutely love it. With the right size of a hook and a super fine yarn one could make a very elegant accessory. Thank you for sharing with us such a nice project 😊🙏🌹
It's seems big because ladies used to put their hair up.
Not in the 70's when this was published. My hair was down to my waist back then. 😊
@@catherinemelnyk I don't know where you're from, but in Texas, all the ladies used to go to the salon to get their hair done almost daily. In the 1970s, my mother and all the neighbors got their hair done to look nice. If they couldn't afford the salon, they ran around in curlers with a scarf over them. So funny, looking back on that time. I was a very small child.
I still put mine up, in a swirly clump!
I have a large head so I hope it fits mine!
@valerieprice1745 you're probably both right.
Young girls wore their hair long and parted in the middle. Very many 30+ women still had tall hair.
I love this! I think a little bigger is ok.. Slip it on, and no headache because it's too tight. Where to wear it tho?
Thanks for your instructions! I just made this and had loads of fun learning this irish crochet motif. I used yarn weight 3 and a 2.0mm hook and it fits perfectly!
Sooooo pretty!!😍😍😍
I made it and It looks gorgeous ❤
What a beautiful cap!! I started with thinner yarn and a 2mm hook. How big in cm. should one pattern be? Looks rather small now. Mine first one is from corner to corner 13 cm. Is that OK or too small??
I haven't tried this yet. But from the instructions I believe we are to join as we work the 9th round on the last 3. We join as we go matching stitches. Lol oh my hard to explain, lay out first one. On one side join as you do same stitches on the last 3. Ugh? Does this make sense?
I made the cap using a crochet number 2. As it was fitting but too short I had to add some picots rounds so the result is slightly different - the flowers are smaller in size. However, it is fairly easy to achieve and very pretty. Thank you for introducing Irish crochet.
I finished it and you did amazing!!! I love your ability to adapt and add a bit of yourself into these patterns. ❤
Thank you 😊
Beautiful, brought back memories of when I was little and watching my mum making a table runner ❤
Thank you for your determined patience to get this hat made. I followed you and now I have a hat!! You made it possible for me😘
Hi, Corinna! Question for ya. When you attached the 4 side motifs to the top, I noticed you went in clockwise order... attaching one then the next one was to the right. Could you save some yarn tails by attaching the motifs in the other direction... so you never have to cut, at least when attaching all the way around the top? These motifs are SO pretty! Thanks for sharing the love with us! Hugs
Oh!!! Worth a try for sure😊 you may be on to something here
hello, please keep bringing us back in time with these amazing crochet art works.🤗
I think the ninth round helped in the oversizing, but this is gorgeous, and a little room isn’t the worst thing!
Thank you! Love this so much!
I will try this pattern in what I have size 10 as I havent tried a intermediate or advanced pattern yet. I am up for the challenge because this is so pretty. My daughter would wear it out. Love your channel!
Do you think it came out too big because you did round 9 on the last 4 motifs when it didn't call for it? Just a thought! I really love your channel ❤️ I, myself want to learn Irish crochet. Thanks for this tutorial 😊Keep up the good work.
You eventually add the 9th round as you join ( according to the pattern) , but also I agree that I somehow how ( possibly in the 9th round) made it bigger, also I think # 3 thread is probably a bit bigger than the pattern calls for , it’s really hard sometimes to source the right thread 👍
I love how the delicate cap with the large bold flower. Perfect juxtaposition. HELLO! I wish you well. STAY ENCOURAGED😊
This is stunning! Ive only just started learning join as you go methods for motif patterns, i follow a Turkish lady on here who does a lot of lacy projects and it can be extremely confusing even following along so i dread to think of the issues you had just going by written instructions. Still, it turned out absolutely stunning and that's what it's all about! 😘😘
What an irony, I have been looking for a beanie made like this, with 4 ply/sports weight yarn, but jave not found any: they all call at least a DK cotton! And when I finally find one, a tutorial even, it is for no. 10 cotton! Well, I do have that, but I really want to use my one skein of variegated bamboo for a lacy sumner hat!
Actually, learning how this hat is constructed, I think I cran fudge a lace beanie with sports weight yarn, using a different, smaller motif.
Way to big with 3.5, maybe doing it with 2.5 or a 2, but it's cool, no very useful for protecting from the sun, but it's nice ^^
Very pretty pattern. For the second and third set of petals on a Irish crochet rose, on the foundation row of single crochets and chain I always join to the post of the single crochet from 2 rows back. it's easier, for me. Hopefully you understand what I'm saying. Maybe you would find that easier too?
I got the first two motifs made and attached. I'm using my homespun, which is a finer thread, so I will probably want to make more motifs than it calls for, which is no problem. I love it! It's coming out so pretty!
Yay! I've been wanting to find a pattern for a hat like this. When I was a teen in the 80s I remember wearing a hat like thiis but beaded. They were popular and I remember buying them at the Chinese owned stores downtown Laredo TX. I will be making them for my daughters and myself. Thank yousomuch for the beautiful patterns!!!
How were the beads placed; just a single bead occasionally, or was every stitch beaded?
You were right, it's worth the hassle. It's very beautiful.😊
This is beautiful.. I will definitely try this!! Thank you so much for sharing!!
Thanks for the tutorial. This is a lovely pattern.
I would use a stitch marker in the back of the sc to make room for the hook in the 2nd & 3rd row of petals & any other place where you have to drop down a round & work in back.
Oooh that's súper pretty! I'm not a hat girl but I'd wear this.
Romans5:8 "God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us."
God Bless
Thanks so much for sharing your expertise and time - I admire your generosity. Also thank you for making the pattern available- best $2 I’ve spent today. 👏🏼 🎉
with yours a little larger than you like you could put a ribbon on the edge and draw it closer to your appropriate size. Amazing work.
Great idea!
Hats off to you!! Wow what a crochet challenge!! You're more brave than I. !! Impressive work & thanks for sharing! ❤
Wow! I love it! you did a great job. I must make me one . Thank you for the tutorial.
Oh I LOVE it !! soo beautiful. Don't know what I'll do with something so gorjuss, but its certainly worth a try - been wanting to try Irish Crochet for a long time now, and without you I would not know where to start. Thanx Corinna for another amazing tutorial - it cracks me up everytime you call yourself "a big fat liar" 😁😘💛💜
Thank yiu 🥰
Do you have any books on hairpin lace or broomstick lace that were popular around the 60s and 70s
You can find directions for those in a book called Reader’s Digest Complete Guide to Needlework. You may be able to find this book in the craft section of some thrift stores or your local Public Library.
@Lucille Kelm thank you I have several how to booklets on the items I was just curious if our friend had any and if she would be interested in featuring them in the future
Actually, even though it's a little big, it still looks beautiful! I think because it's more of a fashion item, you can get away with it being a little big. Beautiful job!
Totally agree! And perfect for someone with thick or curly hair if I’m honest
Ooh. I love this cap! I’ve saved it by texting this video to myself and I’m going to TRY it w/a size 10 thread…hope I can get into those stitches that are annoying. We shall see!
Thanks Corinna!
They are annoying but I found it to be worth it! ❤️
Absolutely love this tutorial!
Love love LOVE all these amazing patterns and tutorials! Your channel has quickly become my favorite and I'm now obsessed with vintage crochet. 😊 I've purchased this one, the doyley book, the table runner end (almost finished that one), and the Irish lace bag. Thinking this one would make a gorgeous wall hanging, with the table runner edging at the bottom.
❤❤❤
Thank you ! 🥰
THis is simply stunning, i cant belive how fast your channel is growing im so happy more people are watching you it also seems like you upload more now, this is so exciting i love this channel more videos is so funn >_
WOW! I have to make this! Beautiful!
This cap is just beautiful!! I was able to follow the instructions as stated on the pattern. I also used #10 cotton crochet thread and a 2.0 mm hook. I have a very beautiful cap that will fit a child or an infant. I am not sure if just moving to #3 thread will be big enough, or use #3 thread and a larger hook. I am going to try both, as I think this is a really beautiful design.
Twiggy used to wear them all the time
That is gorgeous ❤
Will it shrink when you wash it? I’m just wondering because if it’s cotton thread I think it will shrink a little. I just don’t have the experience to know how much shrinkage to expect.
I would say no because you would hand wash it in the sink. I wouldn't put it in the washing machine
Maybe you might get a smaler outcome with a smaler hook. On camara it looks big, I don't have any expierence with American terms for yarn and needles, but as it looks, I would have used a 2.5 mm hook or even a 2 with the shown yarn. Love the pattern. It is so so great, that you take us with you on this journey or better on the journeys...hope for many, many to come
Beautiful! Thank you. I know it must have made you want to throw it across the room until you found your workaround. I do love Irish crochet. It's so delicate.
I think finishing off round 9 for all of the is what made your cap bigger than it was supposed to be, maybe? (I remember back in the day trying something like this pattern and I never finished it due to confusion so I am not the most reliable word on this kind of construction)... just made me go ... I wonder why it's so much bigger?
Thank you for your tutorial! I did it and very happy. It’s very beautiful cap 😍
Thank you for doing the struggling for me. I did buy this pattern (w/o reading it of course) so I thank you for making it more likely that I will get through it.
Where can I buy this pattern? I love it! It's so cute, and if you change what colors you use to make it you can have it as a wedding headpiece or a fun summer hat!❤
Made so many of these lacy caps in many different patterns back then I loved wearing them.
So beautiful and it looks delicate ❤
What is the size of each square motif? I was thinking of putting on front of a pillow.
I wonder if you had single crocheted the pieces together without chain 3s if it would have fit better and not been too big?
If you made your tails longer you could use them to close up the sides. just a suggestion.
Corinna I am so freaking depressed I cannot crochet for 6 weeks! I love all you do and will appreciate you a ton more! ❤❤
Whoa, why can’t you crochet for 6 weeks??
I am praying for you that you will be healed in Jesus name. Depression can be tough, I know. Make sure to get some sunshine and fresh air my friend. Time heals things. Blessings to you!
@@acolley2891thanks so much for your kind thoughts! I will be in a brace for 6 weeks….6 weeks without crochet 🧶
@@justvintagecrochet Corinna truth is it my own fault! Crocheting is my passion….I would crochet all day most of the night….no breaks…..hope others will learn to take lots of breaks……so please be yourself bc you make me laugh every time I watch you….❤❤
@@susananderson3478 I’m so sorry to hear that 😔, and I totally get it ! Thanks for sharing ❤️
Good
Hi can you do a pocto stitch for a baby blanket please
I LOVE this cap.....but for a baby, say a year to 18 months.? 😁Any suggestions as to how to adjust the size.? Maybe the size hook.? 🤔
for a baby you would need to use like a size 20 thread and a 0.90 -1.00mm hook ( steel hook)
How do you get your pattern, I love you show
How would you join it if you didn't do the extra row? I think the extra row is why it's big, but i can't wrap my head around how it would even fit together without it.
Maybe the 9th row with supposed to be the joining row, you can work the picot of the 9th row side pieces into the picot of the crown piece.
Absolutely gorgeous!! 😍😍😍
Om my, that hat is gorgeous 😍🥰
Oh Wow! I can't keep up with you :) So many projects that I want to make! I'm still finishing the bra, I have one side of the titanic bag and now I started this hat. Hopefully I finish one or two of these in the next few days so I can try some more of your vintage designs. Thanks!
I've done irish crochet, and by no means am I an expert. However, one of the ways I learned how to do a rose, is rather than splitting the stitch, make what would be a back post single crochet in the "spokes" of the first round, then do your chains, and work from there... Slip stitch at the end to join, and then work your petals...
I hope that makes sense. 😊
Thank you for another lovely pattern. 🙏
I love it! This could be a beautiful wedding headpiece too, in white and maybe with a thinner yarn/thread to look more delicate, but it is also beautiful as it is. Some tiny sew in circones if the bride wants something sparkly...
I love it! 🎉🎉 don’t worry about your dog barking. Most of us have a pet of some form. I personally have a cat and a dog. Love them both!
Everyone should have this hat it's beautiful and easy to make. I'm sure once my daughter and niece see this they're gonna want one. Ty so much for sharing ❤😊
Never tried much Irish crochet… exciting to learn something new. Ms. Mille looks lovely as a Rose in that cap 😊
❤ is amazing idea for me to do ❤
I did look for wedding gloves 🧤 but find this.
Thanks for sharing 😊
This pattern looks similar to the Titanic purse pattern that you did a while back! I love the look of this though! Looks elegant and delicate!
Is there a “trick” to crocheting with this thread and a small hook? Lol
If there is a trick, I wish I knew it. I've never worked with yarn/thread smaller than a #3 weight, or a hook smaller than a 3.5mm. I'm not familiar with yarn, and the one I bought to make this hat looks like 4 strands of sewing thread, not twisted, and I'm using a 2.5mm hook. Trying to work the 1st motif for the last 4 hours. Finally got to the 2nd row of picots. So many problems. Thread separating, dropping hook, losing stitches. Not sure I can finish without having a heart attack😊. Any suggestions. My first motif measures 2 1/2 " across In the video they look quite a bit bigger and I need this hat to fit 20 1/2" around.
Absolutely beautiful!!!
I think that will look very nice with the Titanic purse. I am adding this to the list for my granddaughters. Thank you for all that you do to make it easy for us.❤
Oh, wow, so that’s how they get those picots in there, and continue on to make the mesh. I’m so glad I saw this…
I just started watching and could see this matching the purse you made some weeks ago!
So pretty!!❤
Beautiful
I made that hat in the 70's. lol. I guess I'll make another one!
I used to have one of these ❤
That is marvelous. You are a diva. Thanks
What is the measurement of the head on your model?
Thanks 4 sharing ❤
Stunning. I see the fascination with Irish crochet!
What is the currency for your pattern?
