Came here for the haunting beauty of the song. But then I wanted to know all about the wonderful art deco organ you see in this video. It seems to be a 1937 Compton cinema organ. There are only 3 left today and this particular console from the Odeon in Leicester Square, Londen seems to be built upon a lift. When not in use the floor opens and the organ can be parked in the basement. (you can see the lift mechanism working in this video)
@@germanshepherdlover2613 - I hate to have to break this to you, but that is NOT Barbara Gaskin that is featured in this song and video as I suspected. This is a totally different lady. It's the same lady that plays the keyboards in the 'It's My Party' song and video. This lady looks nothing like Barbara Gaskin..
@@harrycallahan3391 had similar eyes to Barbara Gaskin, thought it was her (Both lovely) both looked the same to me on android phone but on big screen I can see the difference. I am more aware of the 'It's my party' clip than this one. I have the single of this song, I believe she may have been involved with backing vocals. On the 'It's my party' video clip I think it is also Gaskin wearing the blonde wig coming down the stairs with Thomas Dolby aka 'Johnny'.
@@harrycallahan3391 I love her 60s look in "It's My Party". Would I be correct in saying that it's also her on the synth in that clip, with the very 80s hairstyle?
Have tried, OVER & OVER to get this song from iTunes, but to no avail, sadly.... This song came out in Australia in 1981, on a compilation album called "1981 Over The Top"... GREAT DAYS during the 80's....😁
A great song ....3 great renditions I know of...Jimmy Ruffin, Joan Osborne (from fab DVD Standing in the Shadows of Motown) and the tender tones of Colin Blunstone....
I always thought this was the 'Eurythmics' Dave Stewart when I was growing up. Saw it written on a friends record album. Always sounded just that little bit like him too. But nope.
Has this amazing rendition ever been commercially available?. Whenever a new 80s hits compilation CD is released I always hurriedly glance at the tracklist to see if this tune is included. Alas no I'm always bitterly disappointed. I concur with the majority on here about this truly uplifting song, I can't quite put my finger in it ,but this tune always stirs up memories and emotions . At the risk of sounding melancholy I want this played at my funeral.
This is the version I first heard, as a kid, and it was a big hit and played often on the radio - I've only just now bothered to find out more about this wonderful song.
It was widely available as a single in 1980, even in Australia 🇦🇺 we had it in our collection at home along with Its My Party (Dave Stewart and Barbara Gaskin)
I had the vinyl single in 1980, loved the b side, bought another vinyl from England in the 2010s, I'm in Australia 🇦🇺 so special bc you don't hear it anymore x x x thank God for RUclips 😅
The best version of this song I ever heard. This early synth sound goes so well with lyrics (a bot too close for comfort, though, personally), and Blunstone's vocals are perfect. Multiple thumbs up!
Agree with the last post, Dare i say it, more listenable ((is that a real word), than the classic jimmyy Ruffin. Dave Stewart changes the moog bass line, and adds slight chord changes on his mega expensive ,Prophet 10. Great cover. checkout his classic cover of its my party . That tune reminds e of my school days. Thanks Dave
It’s actually Amanda Parsons of The Northettes, Dave Stewart’s backing trio. The three consisted of Amanda, Barbara and Ann Rosenthal. Amanda and Ann moved on to other careers outside of music.
The 1980s best decade for music
I love it when a Cover of a song is completely different from the original. Think they do a great job with this. Very haunting and beautiful.
Yes, this and "Tainted love" are prime examples of such approach. Also may add Paul Young's "Wherever I Lay My Hat".
Roxy Music, Jealous Guy.
Ah the sounds of 81,great era of music!
Those 1981 synths always sound so mysterious. Another example is on Under Your Thumb by Godley & Creme.
1980
Best version. Amazing arrangement and production.
Always impressive song with the remarkable voice of mister Colin Blunstone 😘❤
Almost had forgotten how much I loved this
Geweldige stem Colin
Just saw this song passing by on tv. Once I saw a concert with Colin Blunstone.
Colin I 💖 you! And your remarkable voice too! 😘😘😘
This is the version I remember, beautiful opening
Love this version 😍😍😍
I bought the record back in the day and it still sounds amazing today

What an absolute gem of a record, thank you for downloading one of my all time favourites
This is the best version of this great record.
Pleasant tribute. R.I.P. Jimmy Ruffin
My favourite song ❤❤❤❤
Superb version - great arrangement and production
Beautiful Barbara Gaskin, Dave and Barbara also did the 'It's my party' reprise which was also great
She looks a lot different in this video to the 'It's My Party' one..
@@harrycallahan3391 just as beautiful though!

Yep, I had the same album and it was a treasure of hits, including this, that still inspire me today.

Great cover. Equal to the original.

I have it on a cd the zombies and beyond if it's any help.

Yes it was. In 1980 I think. I think it charted pretty high, but I can't remember how high it got.

Only when this song would ever truly die, I would die as well..
Beautiful.
I remember this song well a real good song
this song has haunted me when i first herd in 1981
+Elma Peralta Listening to Colin Blunstone's whispering breathy voice puts my mind at ease.
The marvellously soft voice of Colin Blunstone.
Interesting comment, be interested to know why that is......
Elma Peralta you’re right
Same here. Great song.
I bought this single in Albury, Australia when visiting ... reminds me of my favourite granny
I want this one played at my funeral while entering the crematorium
1981 I think this was in charts !! He later had #1 with Barbara gaskin with its my 🥳
Love this...
Jakko Jakszyk sent me here...hmmmm interesting
A very rare appearance of the Sequential Circuits Prophet 10
(Along with a Prophet 5 and a Polymoog)
Great synths
And a Simmons Claptrap can be heard throughout 👏🏼
Prachtige muziek

I recognize Dave Stewart, Amanda Parsons and Colin Blunstone.
Who is the third gent in this video?
Was that Jona Lewie sweeping up at the beginning?
Jakko and Amanda Parsons on backing vocals
muziek uit mijn dienstplicht rot tijd maar muziek top
elma loves gary and cant let go
it looks like her
someone help me out, is that Barbara Gaskin on backing vocals?
Yes, it is.
+Julia l Thank you!
+balouan ratzimon well who is it then? lol
+balouan ratzimon okay, thanks. mystery finally solved!

The intro bloke, is that the guy that you'll always find in the kitchen at parties?
No, that was Jona Lewie.
The missed the last verse out.
Many versions. He has a great voice. I like Paul Youngs more though, it is stronger.
