The Royal School of Needlework BA (Hons) Hand Embroidery Degree students are honoured to have worked with designer Todd Lynn on PJ Harvey's dress which she is wearing to all poetry readings of her new book Orlam. Inspired by Harvey’s own drawings of insects and birds, our Degree Students have captured the essence of the book’s narrative and beautifully translated it through the art of hand embroidery. The specialist needlework was designed to connect with the embroidery heritage of the West Country and features a combination of traditional stiches, including Dorset Feather, Buttonhole, Chain and Fly Stitch. These are stitches which are known worldwide, but also have a distinctive connection to the locality. We are so proud of this project!

I just can't get over the class, kindness, and sincerity of this simple interview- from both of them. Hats off to the British for this example of how basic human interactions are supposed to work. Not to mention the fact that PJ Harvey is one of the coolest, edgiest, sexiest performers ever to grace the stage when she's in another mode. As an American, I concede....you definitely have it more together on your side of the pond:)

I can not help but wonder what life would be like to be so entirely talented, creative, intelligent & painfully sexy & successful on top of it all. Whether man or woman, it must be transcendent. For the record, I'm a straight man of approximately Polly's age & find her irresistible. I've been following her career since I think it must have been 1988 when I got my hands on her first album. Wow!
Following; not in a creepy way, (I feel I have to clarify this for the young, tender, soft generation who might be reading this comment) just good old honest admiration & appreciation for her raw talent & intelligence. Yeah, & a healthy dose of physical attraction towards her inescapable beauty & sexiness. My god, those lips when she sings & snarls with that powerful, amazing voice & those legs when she struts & shimmies about with her guitar on stage! This mild, soft spoken woman sitting on that couch having a pleasant conversation about a book & a dress can rock & I mean rock hard! Carry on Polly Jean Harvey.

I grew up in an era where being from Dorset, and having a rural Dorset accent was a bit of a joke to british people, but I have a deep connection to the place, and I can see this connection in her. She's one of those amazing people who have the courage to let her inner self right out, in the form of her art. Honest, and sometimes fully exposed, most of us would never be able to do that.

    • @TheLRider

Polly is simply an extraordinary one-off. She is the only person who can speak with a rural 'yokel' accent yet be the coolest of cool on stage and hence cut it with the most sophisticated urbanite. I mean Pam Ayers managed to attract a bit of fame, but her accent made her 'a bit of a joke' as you say.

I lived in Wiltshire and Cornwall and loved the dialect. Dorset idioms are no doubt unique but I feel that it's very much just that west country dialect. My family on mom's side is black country and that's full of unique idioms. I live that about Britain it's so linguistically diverse especially the ancient indigenous.

She seems very happy which is great. She let out more smiles than typical (not saying she was unsmiley or something) - it's just that she really seemed happy. PJs a refreshing jar of Awesome Sauce in a world full of imposters. PJ emanates warmth and sincerity - a rare thing in this world. Very humble and genuine are two other major characteristics of hers. I'll stop talking her up now tho.
I'd really LOVE to see PJ just "get into it" again. Just friggin let loose. I think a "Rid of Me" re-tour would be amazing! (for her fans and for her).
You didn't think we were just gonna let ya' hide behind poetry, did ya', Peej?

You know, I was thinking about the whole Dorset dialect thing. I looked into the book, which there are a few snippets on google books. I never think of different dialects in Britain. I always think one language. shows how much I know about history ... It's funny, in US, we dont really define in a strict manner. There are so many. Southern is definitely southern, and bostonian is definitely bostonian, and minnessotian is definitely minnessotian, but this list just keeps going forever. It's always funny when people move though, and see they're different than everyone else at this new location - so now I somehow gotta fit in with these f'ers when I grew up with those f'ers. and I say dialects, but really, here, it's (mostly) just a lot is just word pronuncian and culture differences, except for a few true dialects which I won't discuss for numerous reasons.
