    You are mostly correct. The only flaw is things close up (I *think* less than approx 10m) will be out of focus. But as you say, far distance is more important for a drone. You can improve the amount that is in focus but things get awfully complicated then! If interested, lookup hyperfocal distance.

    Well done Robert!
    You've solved my problem...... 2 days ago I was filming at a friend's pottery. Mostly outside footage but I did some inside stuff with the M3 pro on a tripod, panning along shelves of pots etc. When I came to editing I was dismayed to see the indoor close up shots were out of focus.
    Messed about for over an hour today trying to puzzle out why and eventually turned to YT...you popped up and explained all.
    Very many thanks!

      Like you, I didn't realise that the AF is only "semi automatic" and needs to be turned to infinity for most filming.

    Great video: a simple solution for what is essential a lens aperture issue. A background in photography, i.e. understanding the basic concepts of depth of field and infinity focus settings on lenses helps tremendously. The bottom line is that the relative depth of field of a fixed f:1.7 aperture setting on a lens is by definition extremely limited, which makes the infinity setting a must to obtain focused images beyond a certain distance from the drone lens. On a standard camera, one decreases the lens aperture size to increase depth of field: f:5.6 to f:11 yields optimum results on most camera lenses, and removes any vignetting (darker lens corners) too. The best approach with this fixed aperture Mini-3 drone lens indeed to set it to infinity manually, which ensures focused videos and photographs taken from aloft, as you've shown. Close quarters (filming inside a building, etc.) simply implies that one has to bear in mind the minimum focusing distance of the drone lens when it is set to infinity, or set it accordingly for a closer distance than the applicable minimum for the infinity setting. Last but not least, manual focus settings are generally better, unless of course you are filming a moving subject.

    The infinity position may not be the best position, after some experiment I found the best position to be one or two clicks back from "the little hills". At infinity, a portion of the frame is a little blurry.

    The thing I hate about Autofocus is what happens when DJI pops up some kind of irrelevant message. When you touch the screen to close the message, the system thinks you're picking a focus point. And then you have to touch it again to set the focus properly, leading to a problematic focus-jiggling segment in your video

    Thanks for this video! Although switching to manual focus is a workaround for DJI's poor AF implementation on this drone, it doesn't fix it. I don't mind tapping on the screen to get the focus where I want, but it doesn't work reliably on the Mini 3 Pro. I've been waiting on a firmware update to fix it.
    As for focusing on infinity, that's great if your subject is at infinity. Otherwise, the optimal focus choice would be at the hyperfocal distance. Not sure where that is on the Mini 3 Pro, but other comments have suggested good results at a notch or two short of the infinity mark.

    Mine doesn't work quite the same as you demonstrated. My Mini 3 Pro WILL be slightly out of focus when first pointed at the horizon, but no screen tap is required to get focus. After about a second, once pointed into the distance, it focuses. I agree its a bit slow, and the editing videos, you need to cut the out of focus parts. Another way I manage it, is I DON'T RECORD until it grabs focus with "Continuous Auto Focus" (C-AF)" - ALSO when switching between straight down and distance, I do tap the screen, then: as soon as it grabs THAT focus, I switch from AF to MF. Tried to explain it last week, but I think I may not have been particularly clear... Still if infinite focus works for you, go for it!

    • @WindsweptRobert
      @WindsweptRobert  2 года назад +1

      Aye, but I sometimes like to have the recording showing the view from the drone as it launches. I don't want to have to edit that out. So in my case, infinity mode is the answer :)

      Mini 3 Pro is night and day different to the Mini 1 for wind resistance as is the Mini 2. The Mini 1 motors are lower powered due to the non LiPo Batteries compared to the Mini 2 and Mini 3 improves on that.

    • @2Old4Toys
      @2Old4Toys 2 года назад

      @@8dcphoto sure but when picking between the mini 2 and mini3, is there much difference for wind resistance or are they really equal?
      *Edit: just sold my mini1 this week in anticipation of the upcoming mini 3 non-pro announcement which would no doubt take a chunk out of the future mini 1 resale value.
      I'm in 2 minds to go for the mini 3 at a massive price jump over the mini 2 package. Not so bothered about obstacle avoidance as I am reminded of the constant bleeping an annoyance when I was flying the old Spark back in the day, especially when trying to take off discretely

    I resolved my focus issues last night, I found out the CPL I was using was causing the issues. When I removed it the focus worked perfectly again. Not sure what causes it but it is all working again perfectly. The AF will automatically focus again.

    There are two scenarios here - video where this idea might simplify things, and photos where you definitely do need AF. In both cases the top right 'record' button negates the need to tap the screen - a half-press, DSLR style will auto focus on what you are pointing at.

    • @WindsweptRobert
      @WindsweptRobert  2 года назад +1

      So there's really no difference between tapping the screen or half pressing the button? Still a kerfuffle if you ask me.

    • @Ad_Alta
      @Ad_Alta 2 года назад

      @@WindsweptRobert I don't think so. The button IMO is better as you don't have to change your grip to focus. Taking photos is great as it's just like any camera with a shutter button.

  • @Caroline_Tyler

    What you were expecting is Continuous AutoFocus. Same as on most DSLRs, AutoFocus is just - don't bother twisting that focus, just point at what you want in focus and I'll do the rest.

      But the thing is: It does not focus continously. It focuses at takeoff, and the rest of the footage is out of focus. One solution is to take off, and then tap focus. But I have then had the issue that the focus is good for some seconds, then it reverts back to out of focus. So the AF in Mini 3 Pro is not reliable at all.

    • @Luggruff
      @Luggruff Год назад

      As you can clearly see, it is not continuous. It _locks_ focus and stays there. If it were continuous, then whatever he pointed at after takeoff would be in focus, but the focus does not change.

  • @gbkiller007

    My mini 3 pro locks onto infinity in AF. If you take off in AF and you have an object in the foreground (like your kerb) the camera will have locked onto that as infinity. When you take off and the horizon infinity is now in front the drone it will fail to lock on because it would need to reset the infinity focus to the new background but it wont do that until you tap the background. If you make sure the drone takes off with nothing in the immediate foreground the camera behaves in the same way as the mini 2.

    This is very strange. With what you call "Infinity focus" you should essentially be focused on the part furthest away. However, the ground which is close, is clearly in focus here. So it is very misleading considering this is not how the "macro to mountain" focus range slider usually works. Also, if you compare with your phone for example, when you click on something, it focuses on that, but unlike the Mini 3 Pro, it does not LOCK focus until you HOLD DOWN on the subject. Also, not how it is supposed to work. DJI has messed up here.
    I shot up in the mountains today, and fortunately, none of the footage was especially good. Bad time of day with very uninteresting light, and even more uninteresting scenery. It was the first time I really noticed this issue though, and at first I thought it was just because I downscaled the video to 1080p, zooming in some 4K footage to fit a vertical 1080p timeline. Then, in the next shot, at the very first frame (started recording while up in the air), I noticed that everything was CRISP and in focus, and for the SECOND frame and onwards, everything was slightly blurry, as if the video was compressed. Will definitely test this out moving forwards (impossible to catch this on a sunny day in the RC controller). And again, I feel lucky that the footage itself today was not worth using, anyways.

      I was having probs with the autofocus on my Mini 3 pro until I changed to the settings I'm now using.
      You're absolutely right about the importance of good lighting to get good footage. I've had a lot of days now with little wind and no rain, but the days are so dull with total cloud cover, that I know any footage would look dreary and boring :(
