EdMylett thanks. As a topic suggestion, I am sure you have found that being a better listener to others helps you listen to your authentic self. When facing a tough decision or taking action in the face of uncertainty, how does practicing the act of listening to others, help you find the strength or courage you need to live more authentically? Virgil said “fortune favors the bold” and Samuel Mockbee said “proceed and be bold” maybe the root of that boldness is a quiet calm that has been cultivated through the act of “listening until the other person has finished talking, then responding thoughtfully.” Ed Mylett said that last one.

In my business I have to be very intentional about listening to understand and not listening to give my response.
In general, Mirroring energy is where I struggle the most. Especially with really quiet people that do not show outward emotion.
I was playing golf with a guy recently and I holed out for eagle from the Fairway on the very first hole. I was going nuts, and I would have expected my playing partner to react the same, but he didn't even say Nice Shot or a fist bump or any emotion he just put his head down kept walking.. the entire front nine was a one-way conversation of me asking questions or making statements and getting little to no reply. On the back nine I was getting a little frustrated and thought he must not like me so I won't give him any more of my energy. I kept my mouth shut and neither one of us said a word for about 5 holes. It was brutal! Then on the 15th hole he ask me a question, and a follow-up question...and another.... after the round he said he had a great time and couldn't wait to play again! It wasn't until I started mirroring his energy that he felt comfortable.

I recently changed how I administer advise , and have taken to only speaking of things that I know from my own experience , in hope that others would see and hear the truth and sincerity and not ever feel like I'm just pointing or waiving a finger at them , so to speak. It has not been going so well. It has been brought to my attention that I talk about myself too often etc. my thing is, I and my personal experience , my testimony is truly all I have to offer. My brother Ed. Thank you once again for this amazing content! I have noticed a huge change in myself when I listen to people & then when it's my turn to speak. I used to be the type of person that would let them speak & interrupt them wheb we're conversing. However, now that I have been watching & listening to you! You have helped me become a better listener during a conversation & then I speak when I am able to. I even do repeat back what they say so that let's them know that I truly am engaged with them. I also thank them for opening up & sharing whatever it is that they want to tell me. Just yesterday when I went to get some lunch, I prospected the lady that helped me. I then followed up with her over the phone & she opened up to me about her personal life. I then repeated what she had told me & then I made her feel good about herself with a compliment. I have an appointment with her next Monday. But that just goes to show how much I have changed as an individual & as a listener during a conversation. I do need to ask more open ended questions, that I will say. Brother Ed, thank you again sir. Phenomenal job! By the way, if I had a 3 hour plane ride with you, I would be asking you as many questions as possible & then soak up your wisdom like a sponge. I definitely wouldn't be talking about myself unless you asked me to tell you a little bit about myself! Just saying. Few weeks ago it occurred to me that I was being a major douche to my wife. I did a fantastic job confessing it and apologizing and assuring her that I was going to try to do much better. I thought I killed it on the apology and we could move on. Nope. She needed to express how she felt about it. Even though she was pretty much restating what I had just said, she needed needed to go over it with me from her point of view. It was wicked difficult to keep my mouth shut and not defend myself. Super hard to look in her eyes and not say anything while staying interested in her speaking with my body language. It was a pivotal moment in our relationship. I know it's difficult but if people could just listen to each other better it would save marriages for sure.

One of my pet peeves in gathering is I'm having a pleasant exchange with someone, and another person walk up, cuts in the conversation with something else - always non-emergent- and that's the end of the first conversation. In fact, I quietly walk away, and neither of them notices. When an interruption happens in business, ie; at the conference table, I let the 'intruder' finish...and I continue with: "....as I was saying..." and pick up where I left off. The only time there are never interruptions in conversations is in movies, television and radio - why? Because the conversations are scripted! The greatest joy I receive is from listening - folks share very personal things sometimes - especially when I'm writing a feature article. The other thing I grant when I'm listening is tending to the speakers' trust via empathy. Mr. Mylett is one of my all time faves! He's always right!

Yes! I love this topic. Fortunately it’s one of my super powers but I still have much work to do. Nobody is ever perfect.
I have trained for acting for 8-9 years to be an expert listener, to truthfully connect, to respond truthfully in the moment.
When you clarify what you heard then, as jim Kwik says, you are learning to teach.
Body posturing is more telling than someone’s words. It tells the truth. Someone with closed arms saying they “love you” is telling you they don’t love you; or are mad at you. #maxout
I would have driven you crazy by asking questions...ha ha...it’s because I am comfortable with myself...He wasted that time...3 hours?! Oh man...@edmylet when we listen and respond truthfully we can heal ourselves and others...most people just want to be heard...to be understood...

I am practicing leaving my cell phone in my jacket or away from wherever I am having a conversation. I know it bothers me when someone stops mid way through a sentence, checks their phone and than returns to the conversation only to try to finish my sentence or cut off the conversation. Thank you Ed for pointing it out the way you do.

“People just want to be heard.” So good! That phrase was the greatest point when I trained new hires in customer service. Asking questions and non-verbal communication are great, too, Ed! On the flip side, I tend to finish sentences and offer word selections, which is terrible! I have GOT to do better with this. Also, I would be multi-tasking while my hubs was talking to me. He often would ask me, “can you just stop and look at me?”😬 Ouch! I’m learning to stop being busy and just give my undivided attention to my hubs when he is talking-he has noticed! As I switch careers, this is such a tremendous teaching with so much value, that I can move to my new niche. And this was TOTAL motivational Ed!! Thank you!!

As I get further into my training for becoming a Life Coach it’s crazy to think God called me to be a Life Coach when I’m discovering im a horrible listener haha 😆 It brought so much awareness to how much I feel I need to give my input and “knowledge” haha When actually its so powerful to learn and practice being a great listener rather than responding. I have a gift of encouragement and I thought that’s why God called me to Life Coaching but what I didn’t realize is there is so much power and encouragement just by listening 👂 🤷🏼‍♀️🥳 Thank you for sharing the knowledge and tips! @@EdMylettShow thank you first for your comment, dad was a smart man and his words live on long after he's body has left us to be with his love ones. In the code of Bushido one of the laws is KO which means Filial piety is a virtue of respect for one's parents. A person can not respect one's self if they don't respect were they come from. You cannot be successful in anything unless you're foundation is strong. You can't have honour which is MEIYO in the code without first having CHUGI which is loyalty and duty to carer and respect and lookout for your parents. So I think that will help the young people to learn respect, and you know thats very Important. What I know has taken years of battles to learn, but unfortunately the younger generation need years of battle to appreciate. As the Bible tells us to build your house on a rock. Great video. Ive been practicing the art of listening to others and gunuinely being interested in what they're saying. I can notice most of the people around me do the exact opposite. My brother never asks about anyone else or what their up to. He continuesly talks about HIS job, HIS family and HIS hobbies
He never lets anyone else speak. He Just waits for others to to stop talking so he can carry on about himself. My girl is even worse. She really thinks everyone cares that she's a dog groomer and everyone needs to hear all about it constantly. This is why shes my ex. Shes not interested in anything anyone else has to say. Its extremely Annoying. If she even acknowledged she needs to really work on it, especially after seeing me working on it and encouraging her to work on herself, we could have probably reconciled. But she doesn't nor will she. Its really discouraging. I learned this from Amway back in the late 90's. People do love being around me and come to me for advice and encouragement. Unfortunately, its usually not the ones closest to me but more often, they're strangers or people on social media. Your message is so accurate and true. Thanks for sharing. #maxout

For me, it is that I am so excited! I love people and to serve them and it makes me so happy that I get to the end in my head first and forget to listen along the way. I've noticed this in your interviews. You're very good at engaging with people, because you're interested in people. That's what makes your interviews special because people open up, you can see their face light up when you take an interest. I'm very similar. I love people and I'm really interested in them because of this I always watch interviews and see there are a lot of interviews from people online where it's not about the interviewee, it's all about the interviewer. They look disinterested, are looking on their laptops, writing notes, saying wow, everytime but with a disinterested face and then ask questions that are completely different from the last and you can see the interviewee is just thinking this guy doesn't give a damn, let me just promote my shit and get out of here. I'd rate you up there with Tom Bilyeu for most engaging interviews.
