my friend Scott (Daisy Berkowitz) did the guitar work for a lot of these songs. His style was so unique and alien. I miss you Scott! 😥🙏 BE IN PEACE Also, Pogi, the keyboardist and sound engineer is largely responsible for the atmospherics of these records. This band is one that needs to be studied in the way you would get into Pink Floyd, lots of lore and drama and meaning.
ACSS is a three-part concept album that is "designed to bring the world closer to the apocalypse every time it is played." It tells the story by the prophecy of The Hierophant who speaks of a Worm crawling from the filthiest bowels of humankind, that grows into the Antichrist Superstar his wings being his stardom that propels him into godhood, and when the world has finished rejoicing in its own end, he eventually becomes equally revered and hated as The Man That You Fear. Like a cruel cosmic joke from God to do his dirty work for him and then punish his very existince as a reward. Crypt-Orchid is more of a track than a song because it signifies the point in which the worm begins to grow into an asexual human being. Cryptorchidism is a condition where one or both testicles fail to descend into the scrotum. Fun facts: Little Horn is word for word a dream Manson had about the end of the world, Cryptorchid is about his coming of age through the depravity he witnessed from his Grandfather so they go hand-in-hand. When they recorded Minute of Decay he was crying over how his life was falling apart. Untitled (aka Track 99) has lyrics both forward and backwards, If you play it at 300% slower you can hear parts of lyrics from Mister Superstar. If you play it backwards you hear "When you are suffering know that I have betrayed you" which is a line from Aleister Crowley's book "The Book of Law". Meaning Manson was actually attempting to embue this record with apocalyptic energy by recording a piece in history as if it already happened. Anyone who performs magic knows that this is key in manifestation. My personal fave is Angel with the Scabbed Wings. I rock out to that one constantly and seeing them perform it on the ACSS tour was one of my concert going highlights of all time!
Well informed take. This is the album that put Manson on the map, and made rock music 'dangerous' again. Dangerous for the last time, really, as rock has fallen to the wayside since rap took over.
Interesting fact: The last track is actually track 99 on the CD. Tracks 17-98 are just 3-5 seconds of silence. As a kid I found that pretty cool. Also scary if you left the cd running and forgot about it. Really enjoyed this reaction, it was one of my favourite albums as a teen and still gets played often now.
This was my most played album ever. I was 12 when this came out I literally played it on repeat for a long time. It’s also the first cassette I ever bought with my own money, actually had to have my brother buy it for me since I was too young. This is MM at his prime, Mechanical Animals is another great album from Manson which I recommend.

I can't wait you that you discover also Mechanical Animals, I have never been so impressed by a first time listening to an album. I was so in love with Antichrist Superstar but when I have discovered Mechanical Animals it was so different but at the same time all sounds so perfect and logical for me. It still my favourite MM album until its release.
The guitar for "The Beautiful People" was actually recorded and octave higher and twice the speed as heard on the album, and then they played it back at half speed to get that sound.
They were doing some absolutely crazy shit during the recording of this album and it reflects in the music. It's almost like method acting in music form.
Great reaction Molly! What a great album. I absolutely recommend to watch the videos of this era. They were directed by Floria Sigismondi, and she really reflected the horror and sinister feeling of MM's music into the videos. I also recommend the next album, Mechanical Animals, a great evolution on his sound and image.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed the reaction! I'll have to give the music videos a watch too, and yes I'll definitely plan on a Mechanical Animals video as well. I look forward to hearing it :)
This is Manson's best album by far. The music, the lyrics, the production, their shows at that time, the way Manson and the whole band looked... This was his/their prime, I think they were the best band in the world then and their influence was huge. No other Manson album sounds as good as this one, Reznor's production was as good as for his NIN's albums of that era, but adapted to Manson's own style. He didn't really produce their previous album "Portrait Of An American Family", that one was produced by someone else first and Manson didn't like the way it sounded, so he asked Reznor to "fix it" and that's why he is credited as the producer, but ACSS was the first album where Reznor was the producer since day one and the band had much better songs, so it was a really big quality jump, this is when they really got serious to make a true masterpiece. Their next album without Reznor is very different but it's probably their second best. However there were many people that didn't "get it", the whole glam colourful bowiesque alien stuff, many fans wanted him to go back to the dark stuff and in my opinion he/they never was/were as good as he/they was/were in the ACSS days. Holy Wood was a poor intent of making ACSS 2.0, trying to link it to the previous better albums with the Triptych excuse that he clearly made up while he was writing it. It's still a nice album with a few good songs, but not as good as the two previous ones imo. And he just got stuck forever on this dark goth satanic stuff, he also had too many problems with the abuse of certain substances and booze, and kind of ruined what could have potentially been a much greater career. Album order from best to worse imo: 1 - Antichrist Superstar 2 - Mechanical Animals 3 - The Pale Emperor/Portrait Of An American Family 4 - The High End Of The Low (I think "I Want to Kill You Like They Do in the Movies" is probably their best 21st century song). 5 - Holly Wood 6 - The rest.
"Trent helped with production" is definitely a way to put it. It's almost The Downward Spiral II, which is great. Two of the best albums of the 90s for sure.
I loved that someone reacted to this album nowadays! I don't know if you know this but, this album it's partitioned in like 3 parts, every one with a philosophical meaning, and the next 2 albums with this one, makes a trilogy, each album with different meaning, like a trip for parts. It's just art. And by the way, the last "song" untitled, it was really a hidden song back in the day, the album have 99 tracks on it, and when you finish Man that you Fear, there's a one second silence track until 99, and this one begins. Really dark and creepy. The sound is so special. I strongly suggest you to see the videoclips!
Yes brings back memories! Also worth noting the album is cyclical. When you are suffering know that I have betrayed is the final utterance on the hidden track and the first phrase before Irresponsible Hate Anthem, which is appropriate for the ritual and apocalyptic themes of the record, like a cycle of rise, destruction, decay, rebirth (whether that be on the personal, collective or even cosmic level).
As a long time Marilyn Manson fan Im happy to see u go thru these albums. I like most of his discography and these first 4 albums are really something I miss
I cannot wait to dive more into their music, it took me so long to finally get to this album and now I see why they were suggested so much on the channel. I'll definitely plan on doing more Marilyn Manson reactions!
@@mollyesanborn that’s awesome, all of their albums in this era were phenomenal, particularly the “triptych”, which is made up of this album, Mechanical Animals, and Holy Wood. Mechanical Animals is especially crazy because Manson goes full David Bowie on that album, and it’s pretty much a goth/glam rock album. It’s actually surprisingly gorgeous in many parts.
I really liked watching you discover this album, it was almost like hearing it for the first time again! I would definitely recommend you listen to Mechanical Animals next, it's like the opposite side of the coin. There's a real kind of beautiful dichotomy between the albums, like his name. If Antichrist Superstar is Charles Manson, then Mechanical Animals is Marilyn Monroe. Happy listening! : )
I was a 15 year old goth when this album came out. I was completely obsessed with MM and I think simultaneously depressed. When I hear the music now, its no wonder. It is so dark. I can still enjoy it for its artistic quality.
Just got into MM myself a few days ago and this album is definitely my favourite thus far (added the whole thing aha). So fire 🔥 Mechanical Animals is great too. Would love to see more of these reactions from you! Good video
As a 13 year old i probably annoyed the street with how loud I used to play The Reflecting God when my parents weren't home. Then one day my dad goes I bought a single, and it was Beautiful people, he used drive around thrashing it in his car
OMG back in!!! Mister Superstar,Tthe Reflecting God, Man That You Fear are the gems of the album. Mechanical animals is a gem of an album if you're bored.
@@joey86bu1 rlly? I didn’t like metal and antichrist superstar is what got me into it and stuff prior is his most easy to listen for me and has been even after I’ve gotten into extremely hard to listen to music

You know how there's a kind of a big jump between pretty hate machine and a downward spiral it's kind of the same thing with a portrait of American family in anti Christ Superstar
9:32 The lyrics at the end here are: "Prick your finger, it is done, The moon has now eclipsed the sun, The angel has spread its wings, The time has come for bitter things." I've always loved this bit, it's almost like a spell is being cast. And yes, it does repeat in Antichrist Superstar.
To me this is his second best album only behind Mechanical Animals. This is definitely the definitive manson album in terms of general sound and darkness but to me mechanical animals just found a way to more creative, and ultimately more palatable without completely forgoing it's hard edge like i would say some later albums did
I'm looking forward to hearing Mechanical Animals as well and seeing how the tone of it will differ from Antichrist Superstar. Should make for a very interesting listen!
Your interpretation of this album is SPOT ON! I’ve been listening to this album for nearly 30 years and you’ve articulated the sounds better than I ever have: a broken rattling around sound, an almost buzz saw sound, everything sounds like rusty metal. The abrasive drums, that’s all why this is my favourite album.
I love you are coming at this as "what new sounds - or old sounds done differently" rather than "Bring it Manson" lol. You are genuinely enjoying the soundscape, and that is awesome
I appreciate that, thanks! This album is great, it's like they create this dark world with the sound that completely sucks the listener in. I enjoyed it a ton and look forward to hearing more from Marilyn Manson's discography.
The untitled track was a "hidden" track on the album. One of the most played albums in my life. I would have probably started with "Portrait of an American Family" and "Smells Like Children" but "Antichrist" is my favorite. I feel like you will enjoy the more polished "Mechanical Animals" better. Glad you enjoyed this amazing album.
Great reaction!! Fun fact: you kept pointing out the industrial and electronic elements to this album, and I couldn't help but notice you have 'The Downward Spiral ' sitting on your shelf in the background, Trent Reznor co-produced this album and it most definitely shows!
I'd say Mechanical Animals and Holy Wood are crucial to listen to, the 3 albums were purposely made as a trilogy. Although it can be a surprise how different they are, plus by the end Manson said the trilogy actually worked backwards, with Holy Wood as the beginning and Antichrist Superstar as the end. After that, it's quite a rollercoaster, there's some great tracks and some very dark personal stuff. Pale Emperor is perhaps his most famous and most critically acclaimed more recent album.

This album is a classic! MM (band) and ACSS don't get the recognition they deserve. This is a masterpiece from every angle (production, songwritting, visual art). I remember when this was released. Such an impact, especially cultural! You could see MM's influence everywhere. From movies to music. From Green Day to Christina Aguilera. Not only that, after the grunge hangover and the modest simplicist mindset that was left from it, MM was the band that brought back the "great rock shows", as in the classic golden times. Manson was also the exact opposite of the anti-vedetism, anti-exuberance, low profile mindset that was installed because of grunge. There was a sense of danger in the air. Great times, amazing album.
Ever since I started following your channel, I was waiting for this! I‘d really say, start with the beginning and listen to Portrait of an American Family. With Marilyn Manson it’s pretty interesting to go chronologically in order to explore, how their sound is shifting.
Another Industrial Metal gem that was massively overlooked was ‘Spineshank’ with their album “The Height Of Callousness” with nü-metal coming back within the last 5 years they finally started getting more recognition.
His best album in terms of songwriting. Mechanical Animals is probably his best sounding and probably his peak as a musical act but as a personality, a figure of counter culture and shock, Antichrist Superstar is his best foot forward. I think it's really Marilyn and Eminem who are the last inciting musical acts before the new media age and culture we find ourselves in where nothing is shocking and everything is controversial. Before that fatigue, imagine a still very conservative 90s landscape where a gangly rasp throated pale figure barks and screams about the hypocrisy and abuses of Christian faith and dogma, and the corrosion of American idealism to ear grating industrial rock along side visual imagery of horror, perversion, and victimization. It was as awesome or as terrible as it sounds. The album reflects that beautifully. Before Fight Club made hitting your personal rock bottom cool, there was Antichrist Superstar. I dated a "Manson Girl" for a bit, she decided to carve his name into her chest with a razor blade.. you know for fun? It's definitely an album with a ton of layers both in production and subtext. I think Marilyn (like many artists) lost the plot as time went on, between success and drug abuse and trying to embody some sort of fictional character, he lost the writing that made him both provocative and relatable in his early work. This is a no skip album for me, it's an experience. I know during its writing the members experimented with sleep deprivation among other things, and you can get that sense of mania and desperation as the album wears on. Trent Reznor's influence as both a producer and rival to Manson also pushes it to the limits. May be blasphemy to say but I think Antichrist Superstar is superior to The Downward Spiral, and I'd bet money that pisses Trent off till this day. It's probably a top ten all time album for me, one of the best industrial rock albums for sure, and at his peak, Manson was the last great rock provocateur before it all went cringe. This was honest degradation. It was mean, and loathing, and devoid of answers to any its introspection. It's a beautiful self-tear down of the individual. It's a biting commentary at the complacency of the moral majorities in the face of neglect, abuse, lust for power, and bigotry. But it's never overt or on the nose, it's poetic, it's nuanced, it's specific in its trauma (Kinderfeld). I'm looking forward to your reaction, this is not a one time listen if you enjoy it and it does lend itself to being in an altered state to experience further though obviously people should be responsible. That being said, there are some hidden doors in this album that unlock under certain circumstances is all I'll say. ✌️ and ❤ as always Molly, you're the best.
These albums from MM is also worth a listening/reaction: 💿 Lunch Boxes & Choklit Cows (1990) 💿 Portrait of an American Family (1994) 💿 Smells Like Children (1995) 💿 Mechanical Animals (1998) 💿 Holy Wood: In the Shadow of the Valley of Death (2000)

Happy Halloween! For the next MM album to listen to, it depends if you wanna go backwards to hear how it all started (Portrait of an American Family) or hear the jump and huge change in sound that is Mechanical Animals. Personally I'd say at this point move to Mechanical Animals and then go backwards to Portrait of an American Family.
I'm a big fan of Portrait Of An American Family. Love that album, but his best album was Mechanical Animals. Lots of really interesting electronic beeps and bobs. Steve Putesky wrote the riff to Tourniquet from this album. It's such a sick riff. He wrote alot of the riffs on Portrait like Cake And Sodomy. Great reaction again Molly.
It’s an absolute delight watching you discover this album. I bought this album the day it came out and it still resonates with me. I remember how it felt to first listen to it and this made me relive that. p.s. Check out a live performance of the title track.
The follow up, Mechanical Animals, is a very different sound. Marilyn Manson LOVES his concept albums. Without going into any of the plot, Mechanical Animals is very alien, spacy, and plastic with an industrial glam edge. Just like how Antichrist Superstar is sort of an inverted parody of Jesus Christ Superstar, half of Mechanical Animals is half a parody of celebrity culture, and half a sincere struggle with dealing with celebrity types, drugs, etc. If Antichrist Superstar is about losing one's humanity & emotions, Mechanical Animals is about one regaining the humanity you lost.
Oh you're in for a ride. Manson fans (including me) are one of the most die hard, crawl through the broken glass to see the concert fans that ever eixsted. Can't wait for you to cover Mechanical Animals and Holy Wood - my personal favourite ❤
I am LOVING that you are speaking of THEM because they were probably the latest real rock 'n roll band in the old sense - the whole band and each one of their elements were on fire... it's a wonderful record with a ton of hidden layers and "easter eggs" thanks to Madonna Wayne Gacy , the keyboard player who made sure to help Manson with the album concept as well, he pulled out some of the weirdest shit you could think of (including the screeching tone on The Beautiful People and the keytar solos all over the album) - make Trent Reznor the producer and be sure these will be inside the album. The vocals are pure cinema, Manson changed so many registers it is sincerely frightening to hear his versatility.

Something you may not have realized is that the ending of the last track 99 and track 1 blend in to each other in a loop. "When you are suffering know that I have betrayed you" is the first and last lyric on the album
Antichrist Superstar is amazing... and it's not even his best album imo. The beauty of Marilyn Manson is his ability to shift sounds without ever losing that creativity and darkness that makes his music so iconic. My favorite album of his is Mechanical Animals, although I find there is something to love about all his albums.
I was 14 when this came out. It was my freshman year in high school and everything was changing around me, the music on the radio was getting stranger and stranger. It was at this age I discovered bands like TOOL, Pantera, KORN , White Zombie and Sevendust

When you are suffering know that I have betrayed is the final utterance on the hidden track and the first phrase before Irresponsible Hate Anthem, which is appropriate for the ritual and apocalyptic themes of the record, like a cycle of rise, destruction, decay, rebirth (whether that be on the personal, collective or even cosmic level).
great raction. I think there is no question Mechanical Animals should be next!
Gotta do Mechanical Animals next, as it's like the glam counterpart to this and a DEF nod to Bowie
@mollyesanborn can't wait to see your react to the rest 😁
Holy Wood would blow your mind!!!!❤
I'm looking forward to hearing it :)
Amazing reaction. Please "Mechanical Animals" next or "The golden age of grotesque".
OMG back in!!!
Mister Superstar,Tthe Reflecting God, Man That You Fear are the gems of the album.
Mechanical animals is a gem of an album if you're bored.
I look forward to hearing Mechanical Animals as well!
@@mollyesanborn
It's a bit easier on the ears and a bit more catchy.
@@joey86bu1 rlly? I didn’t like metal and antichrist superstar is what got me into it and stuff prior is his most easy to listen for me and has been even after I’ve gotten into extremely hard to listen to music

Different strokes for different folks.
That was a hell of a record! Almost all of his discography is top-notch. The Pale Emperor is my all-time favorite. He is/was so misunderstood.
Check out Sounds pretty grim’s “Analysis of Antichrist superstar. He also did a video (analysis) of mechanical animals

Hell yeah I've been requesting him forever
Thanks for waiting! I absolutely loved the tone of this record and I look forward to hearing more of Marilyn Manson's albums.
You know how there's a kind of a big jump between pretty hate machine and a downward spiral it's kind of the same thing with a portrait of American family in anti Christ Superstar
Somebody else might have mentioned this but a lot of the strange tones and additional instrumentation is Madonna Wayne Gacy on keyboards
Your face says it all! What a great album!
9:32 The lyrics at the end here are:
"Prick your finger, it is done,
The moon has now eclipsed the sun,
The angel has spread its wings,
The time has come for bitter things."
I've always loved this bit, it's almost like a spell is being cast.
The new manson just dropped and holy moly it's so good
MECHANICAL ANIMAL, you are gonna love it
One of those rare albums where almost every song could be on a greatest hits album.
Marilyn Manson has for decades been my favorite musician
The sound of the albums are so different, I couldn’t get into those two except a few tracks
That whole thing about it being a trilogy seems kind of like bs to me.
I liked Born Villain way more than Pale Emperor
One of the most legendary albums of all time and certainly one of the most deep concept albums ever made.

Portrait of an American Family is the best Manson album. The only one with Daisy Berkowitz on guitar. Who has an awesome tone.
I'll have to give that one a listen as well, can't wait to hear it!
Love your video!
This album is awesome. Make Mecanical Animals, please.
Hugs from Brazil ❤
Thanks for watching! :)
New MM album just released..
This album had such a huge impact on me when it was released. It feels like ages ago.
I got this cd by mistake from a music store and decided to listen to it. Great album, had to immediately fo and buy his others after this.
How do you get a CD by mistake from the store? Similar titles, or? lol
I’m guessing Colombia House sending the wrong CD or something.
my first CD ever
Ever since I started following your channel, I was waiting for this!
I‘d really say, start with the beginning and listen to Portrait of an American Family. With Marilyn Manson it’s pretty interesting to go chronologically in order to explore, how their sound is shifting.
Oh here we goooooo 😈 a lot of the weird sounds were done by synth and keyboard player Mandona Wanye "Pogo" Gacy. He's a master of his craft
I love all of the synth and electronic things they incorporated on this record, it adds a really unique element to their music.
Portrait of an American family! Saw him in a little club on that tour, by the next year this had come out and he blew up!
Great album and happy Halloween, Molly!🎃❤️
It's perfection.
exactly
Damn Straight
Another Industrial Metal gem that was massively overlooked was ‘Spineshank’ with their album “The Height Of Callousness” with nü-metal coming back within the last 5 years they finally started getting more recognition.
Oh yeah- this is a top 10 atg album for me. You definitely gotta check out Portrait of an American Family too. Both amazing albums
HELL YEAH MARILYN MANSONNN
Check out the video for "Man That You Fear'. Damn, I miss be 11-13 in the 90s lol... Keep up the great work! 🤘
I really hope you do Mechanical Animals next
I'd love to hear it! I'll try and get to a reaction for it soon.
That album goes HARD!
Please do “Mechanical Animals” next
I look forward to hearing it!
These albums from MM is also worth a listening/reaction:
💿 Lunch Boxes & Choklit Cows (1990)
💿 Portrait of an American Family (1994)
💿 Smells Like Children (1995)
💿 Mechanical Animals (1998)
💿 Holy Wood: In the Shadow of the Valley of Death (2000)
You are one in a million. ❤ Love your reaction to MM. My favorite album and artist. Can't wait to see more. 😊
Thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed the reaction, I look forward to hearing more from Marilyn Manson :)

One of the best albums ever made 😊
Happy Halloween!
Cryptorchid. An orchid growing in a crypt. OR a person with one or more undescended testicles. This record is such a classic.
Great video
Next can you react to Mechanical Animals by Marilyn Manson (1998) its such a great album i love it.
This is my teenage angst in an album.
To be honest, best thing to do is to jump right into his next release which is Mechanical Animals
Oh you're in for a ride. Manson fans (including me) are one of the most die hard, crawl through the broken glass to see the concert fans that ever eixsted. Can't wait for you to cover Mechanical Animals and Holy Wood - my personal favourite ❤
YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES! This is my favorite MM album!
I wish I could listen this one for the first time ❤
Most of Marilyn Manson songs are bangers! (Especially in the early days)
Hi Molly, my best friend and I are watching your reaction now! We are looking forward to hearing your thoughts on the album!
Oh that's awesome, hope you enjoy the reaction!
@@mollyesanborn Yeah! I enjoy watching your videos with my best friend! We watch your reactions together and discover new artists, bands and music genres. We listen to the albums that you reacted to in our free time :) :)
This is one of my absolute favorite albums. I remember sneaking it into the house when I was 10 and the hidden track scared the shit out of me.
I keep saying it, but I'm fascinated watching you go through all these albums I grew up with in high school and college. Keep going, it's so much fun to see.
That's awesome, glad you're enjoying them! it's been so fun discovering all of these amazing bands.
I would love to see some videos of you reacting to music videos from the albums you have reviewed. Marilyn Manson is definitely known for having creepy weird videos. I’d love to know what do you think about them.
I'm jealous that you can hear this for the first time haha. I've listened to this album hundreds of times and it still blows me away. I also suggest checking out the videos to the songs on this album that have one
You should definitely listen to MECHANICAL ANIMALS next!
Mechanical Animals is his absolute best work.
I look forward to hearing that album as well!
I don't know if you will continue with Marilyn Manson but the next one should definitely be the album Mecanichal Animals
Yes, I'll definitely plan on doing more Marilyn Manson albums!
