    I don't listen to much Megadeth but they're practically unmatched in the genre when it comes to technicality. This album is a stone cold classic and cannot be argued.
    Some people will argue day and night over which band (Megadeth or Metallica) is better because Megadeth's creative force/singer/guitarist Dave Mustaine was Metallica's lead guitarist once many many beers- I mean, years ago lol. It's all whatever to me, they're two great bands with their own fair share of missteps. Megadeth sure had a better 90s output, though.

    • @mollyesanborn
      @mollyesanborn  Год назад +8

      Yeah their technical prowess on those instrumentals is very apparent on Rust In Peace. I wasn't aware of the crossover with Dave being involved with Metallica, I'll have to see what I think of their music when I get to a Metallica reaction.

    • @uroboric
      @uroboric Год назад +2

      at that time yes but nowadays there is definetely more technical stuff in thrash metal. Of course technicallity doesn't mean it's better

    • @itsalwayssomething7490
      @itsalwayssomething7490 Год назад +1

      I love both bands, never bought into the war between them even back in high school when it was happening. But, Megadeth's output (in general) has been much more consistent, not just through the 90's. Metallica has been on cruise control for a long time. For Mustaine, I think the cancer put a drive in him that most musicians don't have at that age. And the current line-up is the best it's been since the 90's. But Megadeth and Metallica made the holy grail of metal albums and for that, there should never be a "who is better" conversation. They both made their mark and cemented a legacy.

Great reaction as always Molly. I appreciate you diving into full albums. Not many (or any) others have the attention span and willingness to do so. It took me a bit to get used to your pacing as far as your edits, in order to produce content that is of a reasonable length to consume. This album really does stand the test of time, sounds fantastic despite being recorded over 30 years ago. And glad to hear you're enjoying the channel! I've always loved listening to full albums as opposed to a single track, a lot of great songs can get overlooked just because they're not released as a single. I find that I can gain a much stronger appreciation for a band/singer when I hear the full album.

KNAC, the local metal station in L.A. at the time, played Rust in Piece in its entirety upon release, along with Dave Mustaine giving commentary live on air between songs. This is my favourite album of all times. All songs can stand on themselves in my opinion. All are great. By the way, about the guitarists, the lead guitarist at that era was Marty Friedman and the rhythm (and sometimes lead) guitarist as well as the vocalist is Dave Mustaine. On the final track, it was Dave singing all the parts but since he can put different tones to his voice he can easily trick you into thinking there are multiple singers. Most people say Dave's voice is not good and if Megadeth had a different vocalist they would be even bigger than Metallica. However, I love his voice and it might be hard to get used to it but once you do you will love it.

    The great Dave Mustaine - he is the mastermind behind Megadeth. Originally the guitarist and frontman for Metallica when they were getting started (and writing a majority of their first album, Kill 'em All) but was thrown out for being too drunk and rowdy essentially. He set out to form a faster, heavier band than Metallica, and formed Megadeth. He writes the majority of the songs, does vocals, and shares lead guitar duties. Along the way there's been some great musicians around him to bring it all together.

    Poison Was The Cure and Polaris have always been my favorite tracks from this record and from Megadeth. I put this album #2 on the greatest thrash albums of all time. Master Of Puppets is #1. But the mix on Rust In Piece is absolutely perfect. Master Of Puppets is excessively reverberated and muddy. The production value and this record is as good as it gets.

      You can basically interchange these two albums. I don't see one above the other, while I very much prefer Megadeth as a band. These albums are basically perfection from start to finish. It's completely different vibes, but very much familiar to each other. They are the holy grail of metal albums. It's also held to such a high standard that people expected them to keep making these albums over and over, but I'm glad they are one-offs. They are special because it was rare. 1988-1992 seems like thrash was peak and many bands came out with their masterpieces.

    I first saw your channel when you reviewed a few of Korn's albums, and I'm excited that you're checking out one of my other favorite bands now. I'm going to join in on recommending Peace Sells... But Who's Buying? next. That was an earlier lineup of the band then and it sounded so unique. Nick Menza and Marty Friedman are the drummer and lead guitarist on Rust In Peace, and Marty is the guy playing a lot of the crazy solos on songs like Hangar 18 and Lucretia. On Peace Sells they had Gar Samuelson, a jazz drummer, and Chris Poland, a jazz/fusion guitar player, plus the core of Mustaine and Ellefson. It's intense, technical thrash but it has a different character than what you just listened to. Rust In Peace was produced with Mike Clink who was an A-list hard rock/metal producer (he did most of Guns N' Roses' hit albums) so the sound is very clear and pristine as you observed. Peace Sells was their major label debut though and is rougher sounding, but is still well produced.
    One last note, if you review any other Megadeth albums, make sure you listen to the ones that are NOT the 2004 remasters if you can find them. Mustaine went back and remastered their back catalog in the mid 2000s and most of them sound awful and it just ruined the original sound of the albums. The version of RIP you listened to is the un-remastered one it sounds like, so that's the better version.

    So, the actual "writing" of RIP is unknown to me, but knowing Mustaine and knowing that it came out not long after "Puppets" -arguably Metallica's "masterpiece" (certainly at that point in time), I imagine Mustaine heard "Puppets" and decided "I can do that faster and more intricately".
    It's certainly a (mr. Bones) wild ride, I was 13, maybe 14 when this came out - such a great record for a hormonal lad with a lot of energy... Saw them at Hammersmith Odeon with The Almighty and Alice in Chains, still got the tinnitus... no regrets (now). I know this'll piss some people off, but I'll put this up against ANY other thrash band for how it satisfies that "Grrr" feeling. Aside from "Reign" and let's face it, nothing beats "Reign".
