  • The Grenfell Tower inquiry is now examining how the fire started and spread.
Using witness evidence and testimony from the emergency services and residents, the hearings will address:
:: Fire safety and prevention measures at Grenfell Tower
:: Where and how the fire started and spread
    :: The evacuation of residents
:: The chain of events that led to the decision that there was no further savable life in the building
The inquiry team say this phase is a purely a fact-finding exercise.

It spread rapidly, with fires starting inside the flats, as the gas supply to the flats was still on. Cadent sent their experienced personnel to safely turn off the gas supply to the flats. The person responsible for the fire brigade refused to allow them to turn the gas supply to the flats off, why, it remained on for 36 hours. It has been said it was only left on for about 24 hours. However long it was on for, be it minutes, was too long. Flames coming from the windows can be seen to indicate the burning gas.

We had an almost identical fire in an apartment block here in Melbourne. Our fire service supervised the evacuation of the building as soon as they arrived at the scene. They also had an emergency PA system allowing Fire services to communicate directly with residents. Hopefully this inquiry resulted in policy changes in fire protocols in UK

They are focusing on possible reasons why the fire got out of control which will include the cladding. If they can ascertain that the fire service was negligent in any way, then the cladding will not be the salient reason for the deaths because it cannot be substantiated that the cladding was the main course of the deaths and a verdict of misadventure may be found I fear.
If the reason for the deaths is not just the cladding then I fear a number of guilty people will get off scot free sadly because there will not be enough reason to blame just the cladding as it may not have been possible to extinguish the fire if any perceived failings by the fire service can be proved actual. I do not think for one second that anyone from the fire service will be prosecuted even if wrong decisions were made but any wrong decisions by the fire service if proved, will reduce the emphasis for the reason for the deaths being just the cladding thus my fear of a compromised verdict thus the verdict of death by misadventure may be found. I hope I am wrong in the favour of the residents. regards Hayden

This enquiry seems to be determined to put the blame entirely on the fire brigade while completely ignoring Hotpoint's role in causing this tragedy.

I hate to say it but I am impressed by the lack of this fireman's remembrance of events. I could put it down to ptsd but the statement he gave within two-three days of the fire indicate he remembers totally different information than he is giving orally at the inquiry. This man is in "stress", he is scared to say anything, he really doesn't remember (doubt that) or he doesn't want the truth to come from his mouth. Obviously this man is not telling the truth for some reason - what is he hiding?

I wouldn't blame Hotpoint, it's not like all their white goods are blowing up all the time- it's the folk that wrapped the building in a flammable cover that are to blame!

@@em-or7qc I wouldn't excuse Hotpoint. They're responsible for most fires caused by appliances in the home, in London.

Painful but alas has to be done. Any lessons learnt may save lives. Shortfalls and deficiencies may force more money to be budgeted. All such accidents and tragedies bring change and improvements. Some senior ranks heads will no doubt roll?

How can fire have rapidly spread through the tenants window?
Footage showed the window to be wide open so he must have opened it in advance unless defective fridges are glass shattering.
Why didn't he make any effort to douse the fire himself (he's quoted as saying he saw smoke behind his fridge which sounds he could have easily contained it) with the sink and pans at other side of kitchen from the fridge?
Not racing upstairs to warn people directly above is shocking, especially as he then went outside to film it starting to bellow from his flat.

Those people died because of ineptitude. Those who responded treated the victims like crap!
If this helps refurbish older buildings good, but the owners should go to prison.

These enquiries are carried out by people who sit on their fat arses all day and have never attended a fire in their lives. We can all be right in hindsight its the people who were there and doing what the thought best at the time. They did not sit an office thinking about it for month they had to make decisions right or wrong in seconds. The only people who will benefit from this are the compensation solicitors.

This makes very uneasy listening and I don’t think this enquiry is determined to put blame entirely on the LFB. What is does do is show what appears to be serous flaws in the training or rather non training, the totally staggering omission of firefighters in the tower not communicating as to where they were, what they were doing and not updating the command as to the fire taking over the building. This man looks like he hopes the ground would swallow him up, it’s like a rabbit in headlights and it’s rather obvious he was out of his depth. Not his fault as one wonders why he was put in such a position.
