yeah, it happened. The whole "a death in the family" story is basically Jason todd running away from home after finding out his mother is still alive, somewhere in middle east. Meanwhile, batman finds out the Joker has a nuclear missile and chases him to Iran, where he casually finds Jason. They recover the missile, and set out to find jason´s mother. Unfortunately, she is being blackmailed by J., who wants to use her in order to steal some medical equipment. Jason finds out and offers to help her, but she betrays him getting both of them killed. Joker again escapes, with an angry batman totally willing to kill him (yeah, there is like six times in the comics where he tries to kill the joker), but is contacted by the governor of Iran, who want to make him an ambassator, so he can kill the entire UN. Batman tries to kill joker. Superman intervenes. Joker tries to gas the room. Superman intervenes. Joker escapes AGAIN. Bats follows him to an helicopter, where the two of them wrestle, the a henchmen tries shooting bruce, but hits joker and the pilot, and the chopper crushes into the ocean. Superman rescues batman, and batman starts yelling that they have to find the body, knowing already they never will, since joker probably survived.
+112steinway Yeah, don't stick your head out the window if you work for a criminal mastermind. What's generally forgotten is that the addition of Robin caused a large INCREASE in sales.
Ben Culture True, kids were a huge selling point in the Golden Age. The fact that Captain Marvel was a kid in his every day life allowed him to outsell Superman.
112steinway -- That always makes me angry to think about, that DC (then named National Comics) sued Fawcett for copyright infringement, kept them in court for years, bankrupted them, and in the end, gained ownership of that same character.
Bob just a minor correction: Todd was never universally hated by the fans, he was just divisive. Some fans liked him and others didn't. For the vote, someone hacked their phone to keep dialling the kill number.
He actually explains how you can get into modern comics while still understanding the continuity a few times, in his videos. His advice is (if you're interested), pick up any random comic that looks interesting, and read it. If you see anything that seems to be referencing something that happened in a previous issue, look it up on Wikipedia.
That makes enough since, till you get the classic wikipedia overload XD fortunately comics are self-reliant without history from like 1939, you can still enjoy a comic today.
Aickavon the Techpriest i would hope so with any comic book or book series or even video game to know why whats happening and whats going on you have to know the history of the subject and reason for knowledge purposes. Knowledge is power the more you know the better choices you'll will make issue #1 to Ending or Current happenings in any subjects or circumstances.
It’s interesting how all of the robins put on another superhero identity after they were done being robin. Dick Grayson became Nightwing, Jason Todd(my personal favorite robin) became Red Hood, Tim Drake became Red Robin, Stephanie Brown became a retconned version of Batgirl, and while this doesn’t really count since it was a “what if” future story Damian Wayne became a second version of Batman.
This is why I watch cartoons, I remember an episode of Batman: The Brave and the Bold where batman and catwoman marry and have a child named Damien Wayne. Bruce cannot convince his son to promise to take the roll of batman when he dies, but after a showdown with the joker's son kills his parents, Damien vows to take up robin. That is how Damien Wayne became robin, feel free to correct me.
I actually knew all of this. How I keep all that information in my head is a mystery. Still makes me wonder why I recall trivial stuff like this and old 80s cartoons like Turbo Teen and such while I need a refresher when it comes to certain college courses. ^^;
Thing is, most people actually voted for Todd to live but someone programmed their phone to keep dealing the "kill" phone number and that was enough to bias the vote
In the sequel to "The Dark Knight Returns", she has also taken the name "Catgirl". Both of these series takes plase in a hypothetical future, which is why they have no bearing on the main storyline.
Yeah I read something about Nightwing (Grayson) getting his name from Kryptonian who also went by Nightwing in a comic that brought on a new planet Krypton or something. Anyone feel free to elaborate on what I just said.
I used to remember only calling and knowing Dick Grayson/Damien Wayne/Tim Drake, [mainly Grayson or Damien], by the name of Robin, but I kinda like the name Nightwing more now.
Stopped reading comic books when Stephanie died (kids in the line of fire, multiple Robin deaths: too weird for me). I'm glad I wasn't the only person to hate that particular story element.
This is a message FROM THE FUTURE DC comics announced that in the next issue of "Batman and Red Robin" Carrie Kelly will be introduced into the main DCU
loner1878 especially considering the rumor that an irate fan of batman rigged a computer to dial the thumbs down number every few seconds for a period of hours, since there was no caller ID it wasnt caught and supposedly swung the vote in favor of killing jason todd
I'm MUCH more curious about the origin of the Nightwing name than just about everything else in this video. Bob needs to go back to doing one of these "Comics are Weird" videos every few weeks. Ian Suttle
You mean Robin from FOREVER and BATMAN and ROBIN? Nothing against a Titans movie but when you are pitching a movie those are not the memories you want to evoke. Its like asking for a Zelda movie because the SMB movie exists.
She belongs to a possible/aternate future timeline story, canon or not, she isn't part of the main timeline, at least not yet, as the others in this clip were or are.
Dick Grayson: Great character. Arguably better than Batman. Tim Drake: Necessary replacement for Grayson after he becomes Nightwing. Jason Todd: Not great, but good for Bruce Wayne's character development. All the others: Eh, kinda going overboard at this point.
***** What I mean by that is, because Grayson started as a child, he's been allowed to grow in ways Batman hasn't. Batman has remained static for a long while now, because that's how he's most marketable. Nightwing, by contrast, has been given character development Bruce hasn't. Also, he's a lot more human in the ways he interacts with people.
you know whats a lot of fun? showing Bob's COMICS ARE WIERD videos to people who only know the names of the characters and seeing their reactions of the tangled webs of comics
Hard to tell what is going on post DC 52 these days. After that happened, I jumped ship and I'm one of many who want Dan Didio and company strung up. -_-
Damian Wayne is one of the best PoC characters in DC and I especially love the timeline where he actually became Batman and fought satan, check out my look at it & more here: lidoshuffle1.blogspot.com/2015/07/panel-vision-comic-book-futures.html
I know Bob isn't here anymore but re-watching this and the fact that he miss Carrie Kelly irks me... So for those of you who don't know, the 6th and final Robin is Carrie Kelley, the second female character to take up the mantle chronologically, but the first in reality due to being created several years before Stephanie Brown. Though her story is technically considered an Elseworld story and therefore exists outside the quasi story line of the prior Robins. The third robin of Frank Miller's Dark Knight comics (no relation to the live action movies) this story takes place some time after Jason Todd's death and Bruce Wayne had aged quite a bit and even hung up the batman mantle, in direct relation to Todd's death. Kelley saved aged Bruce's life from some enemies and he takes up the title of Batman once again, agreeing to hire her on a Robin. Bruce is nearly killed by a mutant gang leader and Kelley attends to his wounds, they spread some rumors among his gang and eventually Bats and the leader settle things the old fashioned way: Beating each other to a pulp in a mud pit. Previously thought to be lobotomized (yeah not kidding in the original story everyone thinks he's essentially a vegetable) Joker makes a full recovery and begins a new reign of terror on a Gotham that hadn't seen him in action for nearly 2 decades. Carrie aids in stopping him by defusing bombs he had set up at a fairground. (Old habits die hard I guesss.) Then the Government calls in Superman to take down Batman and Kelley delays him. Supes and Bruce "defeats" superman with a massive stock pile of Kryptonite and exploding the batcave. This Kills Alfred (who I'm pretty sure stays dead) "kills" Bruce and destroys Wayne Manor. Bruce's funeral is attended by Kelley claiming to be a relative and Superman hear's Bruce's heartbeat coming from within the coffin.... Comics are weird indeed.
lolaf1er So I'm sure you know that Dark Knight Returns isn't considered canonical by DC right? Bob skipped it because Kelly really is only important in Millers handful of Batman comics, 1 of which was popularly received. Plus technically Kelly plays catgirl (SHUDDER) in the next issues.
Freshie207 I do in fact. "Though her story is technically considered an Elseworld story and therefore exists outside the quasi story line of the prior Robins. " Taken from my second paragraph.
lolaf1er I know I'm just wondering why her absence would irk you, I mean any Batman who gives comics a shot will probably read Dark Knight Returns first. Other than that particular series Carrie Kelly hasn't done anything of worth.
Can't believe you thought it necessary to spew all that detail about a character anyone who's read any comics knows as its the most famous Batman story ever. Bob obviously didn't forget it.
if fans are so easily pissed off why not go full 'shit against a wall' with the whole multiverse thing? indulge any and all ideas in separate, largely self contained, continuities. if something doesn't work, kill that version of the hero.
loner1878 YA know i was going to ask how could you not like her and then list of all the reasons why you should but i am generally curious. how could you not like her? what about her character did you find lame.
"The Joker had been named the Iranian ambassador to the United Nations."
Wait, what? What?!?
yeah, it happened. The whole "a death in the family" story is basically Jason todd running away from home after finding out his mother is still alive, somewhere in middle east. In that mythical land of Batman where Robin did not exist Batman also used a gun and had no qualms about killing people.
+112steinway Yeah, don't stick your head out the window if you work for a criminal mastermind.

so... basically, to understand comics... you have to start from... comic number one, in 1939
He actually explains how you can get into modern comics while still understanding the continuity a few times, in his videos.
His advice is (if you're interested), pick up any random comic that looks interesting, and read it. If you see anything that seems to be referencing something that happened in a previous issue, look it up on Wikipedia.

Bruce Wayne I don't read comics or watch the show on a regular basis.
Aickavon the Techpriest i would hope so with any comic book or book series or even video game to know why whats happening and whats going on you have to know the history of the subject and reason for knowledge purposes. These days there's more than a few references to the role of Robin being something akin to a superhero internship.
He was Batman up until the New 52 reboot. He got demoted back down to Nightwing again.
I actually knew all of this. How I keep all that information in my head is a mystery. Still makes me wonder why I recall trivial stuff like this and old 80s cartoons like Turbo Teen and such while I need a refresher when it comes to certain college courses. ^^;
Superman wears glasses and nobody knows it's him. Never question comic book logic.
whoa, voting on if a character should die (which is not the exactly same as just being "written off") feels super-morbid and dark to me.
Thing is, most people actually voted for Todd to live but someone programmed their phone to keep dealing the "kill" phone number and that was enough to bias the vote
Has Bob made a video like this, but about all of the Batgirls?
In the sequel to "The Dark Knight Returns", she has also taken the name "Catgirl".
Both of these series takes plase in a hypothetical future, which is why they have no bearing on the main storyline.
Yeah I read something about Nightwing (Grayson) getting his name from Kryptonian who also went by Nightwing in a comic that brought on a new planet Krypton or something. Anyone feel free to elaborate on what I just said.
Dick Grayson may be my favorite, but Tim's red/black costume is easily the best. Though I like Damian's hood.
I used to remember only calling and knowing Dick Grayson/Damien Wayne/Tim Drake, [mainly Grayson or Damien], by the name of Robin, but I kinda like the name Nightwing more now.
5:15 If Batman Inc is still around, can they BOTH be Batgirl?
Stopped reading comic books when Stephanie died (kids in the line of fire, multiple Robin deaths: too weird for me). I'm glad I wasn't the only person to hate that particular story element.
What about Carrie kelly?
The Dark Knight Returns never happened in DC's Canon, so she isn't in this group of Robins.
ooooh ok thanks
This is a message FROM THE FUTURE DC comics announced that in the next issue of "Batman and Red Robin" Carrie Kelly will be introduced into the main DCU
how many times did dc press the reset button ?
Still, fans didn't overwhelmingly vote to kill Todd, it was a narrow margin. Plus still controversial.
loner1878 especially considering the rumor that an irate fan of batman rigged a computer to dial the thumbs down number every few seconds for a period of hours, since there was no caller ID it wasnt caught and supposedly swung the vote in favor of killing jason todd
Robin is not a sidekick. He is a decoy. Batman is in all black. Robin is bright yellow, red and green. Which one would attract more attention?
Watching this video has shown me I have read way to many comic books. =D
comics ARE weird.
3:00
The Joker
The original Sacha Baron Cohen
Dude, you're talking about the same universe that can't tell the difference between Superman and Superman without his glasses, er-, Clark Kent.
Why was the Joker the Iranian ambassador to the UN?
Bruce Wayne adopts an orphan child at the exact same time that Batman gains a child sidekick, but nobody suspects anything?
I'm MUCH more curious about the origin of the Nightwing name than just about everything else in this video. Bob needs to go back to doing one of these "Comics are Weird" videos every few weeks.
Ian Suttle
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nightwing#Kryptonian_mythological_figure
Here you go.
He is basically an ancient kriptonian hero, that superman told dick about, and since dick looks up to supes
Anything on Valiant Comics or INDIE Comics in general. Deathmate was interesting.
Carrie only appears in "The Dark Knight Returns" which has no bearing on "mainstream" Batman hence why she is not included.
ok thanks, never got around to war crimes, then read Red Robin and she's alive?
Should have mentioned the Robin Hood connection of the costume. A lot of people don't seem to be aware of it.
Yea specially the boots, and his obvious. I always had that feeling, but now I know who is he supposed to be like.
who do you think is the better robin escapist
I would like to see a classic-look Robin in movies, but it looks like DC/WB has rigged it so there can never be ANY Robin.
In the worlds of the Big2 there is no such thing as continuity.
Several children adopted every day.
You mean Robin from FOREVER and BATMAN and ROBIN? Nothing against a Titans movie but when you are pitching a movie those are not the memories you want to evoke. Its like asking for a Zelda movie because the SMB movie exists.
She belongs to a possible/aternate future timeline story, canon or not, she isn't part of the main timeline, at least not yet, as the others in this clip were or are.
thought this might be about the arnold movie lol
Always thought Damien Wayne was the best Robin, and Dick Grayson/Damien Wayne was the best Batman/Robin dynamic.
Wow...There has been only 5 robins?
if you think comics are weird, you should check out doom-patrol by grant Morrison
Dick Grayson: Great character. Arguably better than Batman.

laz kar gross, dude
Jason Todd, the Gwen Stacy of Batman.
Oh snap. *rimshot*
Damian is clearly the best Robin.
Gotham doesn't exactly have the smartest citizens around.
you know whats a lot of fun? showing Bob's COMICS ARE WIERD videos to people who only know the names of the characters and seeing their reactions of the tangled webs of comics
Left out Carrie Kellie. but maybe "Dark Knight Returns" deserves its own episode.
Batman trained him for a long time Before Dick became Robin so Robin did not show up at the same time Bruce Wayne adopted Dick.
Hard to tell what is going on post DC 52 these days. After that happened, I jumped ship and I'm one of many who want Dan Didio and company strung up. -_-
This is why I almost gave up on comics, they have rebooted and changed so many times it just gets annoying
If they could use Robin for a movie why not the Titans
Dick Grayson is the BEST
Personaly speaking Jason is my favorite especialy after the New 52
Batman sidekicks? *pffftt* Totally weird mix of retcons and WTFs...
Shirai Kuroko, best sidekick EVER. ;) ^_-
lol the only reason I watched the vid was for damian
Damian Wayne is one of the best PoC characters in DC and I especially love the timeline where he actually became Batman and fought satan, check out my look at it & more here: lidoshuffle1.blogspot.com/2015/07/panel-vision-comic-book-futures.html
you missed one,,, Carrie Kelly
Carrie Kelly???? and dont tell me she isn't canon, she is
Jason deserves better writers

So about the thumbnail...
No love for Carrie Kelly I see.
I think she became Spoiler again though I'm not 100% on that.
Batman is awesome but I love Nightwing way better
Not a canon Robin.
The title jusst reminded me of alpha......…why must my brain punish me like that
if fans are so easily pissed off why not go full 'shit against a wall' with the whole multiverse thing? indulge any and all ideas in separate, largely self contained, continuities. if something doesn't work, kill that version of the hero.
AK48smoker They did, it became a headache to keep track of hence the crisis of infinite earths.
thats the exact reason why this sigment is called comics are weird
no she's not.
Tim Drake is the shit!
missed carrie kelly
*facepalm*
wat
Correction, the voting was rigged
i think there was another female robin
You mean the one in Miller's _Dark Knight Returns_?
Edit: I just checked and her name's CARRIE KELLY.
Stephanie Brown was awesome. She totally needs to be in the New 52. *ahem* If she isn't already, I haven't been keeping up with the New 52 that much.
yeah all my friends stopped reading DC after new 52, it was the last straw for them.
Cozy2626 I always found her lame.
Javetts Too bad, Batman and Robin in the New 52 was amazing.
loner1878 YA know i was going to ask how could you not like her and then list of all the reasons why you should but i am generally curious. how could you not like her? what about her character did you find lame.
AaronArcLOL She doesn't fit in with the Bat-family. Just doesn't in every single way. I like her as Spoiler though.
