Can I just say that this whole thing is all the more groan-inducing because Scott's boyfriend was killed in the first issue, just to make him angry and "edgy"?
@@keirtanaka2929 I feel like I'm missing most of this conversation but yes, Morph was in the golden age of X-men... sort of. There was a point where one of thier enemies killed Charles Xavier and he stayed dead for a few months before emerging from the basement and revealing that he hadn't died. He'd been in the basement the whole time while a Mystique rip-off named Morph turned into him and eventually died in his place.
@Shawn Tomac Yeah most of that comment has been lost through the "evolution" of GoogleTube| It was basically discussing how Morph was actually a character that existed in tha comics to some extent or other and how he was initially put in the Animated Series only to die so they could establish the "adult/mature" tone thereof| It was in response to the above comment about a character's death being used as development for another purpose & it isn't all that rare a thing to happen| This inclusion coincidentally increased Morph's popularity among that sect of the X-Fandom as a side effect|
IMO (but not only mine), Batman is not gay, because he has never matured enough to HAVE a real sexuality. He is psychologically frozen at the age he was when his parents were murdered. This happens in real life, when you don't recover from a serious trauma, and Bruce did the OPPOSITE of "recover". It also explains why his closest partner (aside from his father figure, Alfred) would be a 12-year-old boy, without making Batman a pedophile. Yes, I am saying he's a kid at heart, but I mean a DAMAGED "kid" However (and this is where it gets interesting), DIck Grayson turned out to handle the murder of HIS parents a LOT better than Bruce ever did. He's motivated to fight crime, but still able to enjoy himself and have moments of happiness. And so, by his example, *Robin taught Batman how to grow up* a little more.
+Ben Culture Umm, Batman has a on and off relationship with catwoman and had a child with Talia al gul. Saying batman isnt mature enough to have developed sexually is misunderstanding the character. However we all interpret characters in our own way and there is so many diffrent versions of them.
+jaws He doesn't have very _good_ relationships with women. Catwoman is very on and off, and the last I heard, Batman was claiming Talia _raped_ him with drugs to get pregnant. God knows DC has changed their continuity so much, that might not be the story anymore.
This is also the reason Timm Drake is my favourite Robin. Grayson had to put up with a lot of Batman's weird hang-ups and his own struggles with not having his identity be devoured by Wayne's shadow. But Drake, from what I've seen, seemed to handle it a lot better. Part of it is definitely that Brucey got better the third (or is it the fourth) time around and Grayson was there like a helpful older brother, but a lot of it comes from his personality: 'I appreciate you trying to say Batso, but I'm gonna go grab some friends and have some fun'
Funny story, I'm fine with Batman having a sexuality. I REALLY don't like thinking about the Joker having one (even though Harley Quinn + total man crush on Batman) Joker in a sexual context creeps me out more than anything else related to the Joker, which is saying something considering, you know, he's The Joker.
You know what? DC should've bit the bullet and just made Guy Gardner gay. A ultra-macho, wisecracking, square jawed ex-cop who is actually kind-of a lovable, wisecracking softie underneath the bluster might've been a subversive, yet kinda interesting take. But, what do I know?
Well the other reason we can't "just makes some new characters with which to fill out the spectrum" is because this is the 21st century, the age of the reboot, the remake, and the sequel. Getting the entertainment industry to create new characters in general is already a struggle enough.
You know Batman would make a weird kinda sense. Not for the hur dur he bummed Robin jokes. But because his relationship with his alter-ego could reflect the duality some closeted people feel about their sexuality and the persona they put on for society. Some people tout how Bruce Wayne is more the persona than Batman is, a posh pretty boy with lots girlfriends and cars, he's only himself when he goes out at night in secret. And this wouldn't be the first time themes like this have been explored, you've got novels provided by writers like Chuck Palahniuk and Bret Easton Ellis to use as templates or guidelines.
Not to mention that Batman is often used as a caricature of the conservative old-worlder, so having him as a gay man too afraid and ashamed to be himself also makes sense.
+Andrew Krska IMO, Batman is not gay, because he never matured enough to HAVE a real sexuality. I must continue this in a new post, because YT is now cutting replies strictly at four lines, and if you know me, you know I'm not anywhere _near_ that succinct.
Curiously no less than Frank Miller (yes, THAT Frank Miller) once opined that if Batman was gay it would probably solve most of his problems. I mean, not for nothing but it's kind of hard to look at many incarnations of him (particularly the ultra dark and edgy sad sack and anger management problem versions) and NOT get a distinct whiff of self loathing, emotional repression, and macho overcompensation. Hell, if Batman did come out everyone at the JLA would probably just look at him a moment and the Flash would hold out his hand to Green Lantern and say "Told ya so. Come on, pay up."
The only issue I have with this is it adds Alan Scott's daughter Jade to the list of DC characters the New 52 seems to have wrote out of existence along with Stephanie Brown and Wally West.
You're right. Agnostic is "I believe in something, just don't have a name for what I feel." Other religions say "I believe in this god..." where as Atheists say "I don't believe YOU."
Actually, fuck yeah, a Harley Quinn retrospective is WAY overdue, between the gradual costume evolution and her ballooning into the mainstream due mainly to the Arkham games (somehow) there'd actually be a lot of interesting material to cover. WAY up Bob's alley.
How they could have simply avoided the whole continuity shit: Say batman and superman had always existed and their writers incorporated them into their comics
I do not understand how things like this are sometimes considered ground breaking in comics. Has anyone ever read The Authority? Yes it was from the so called Dark Times in the way back when 90's, but... The Authority was a comic that was a parody in one way and very original in others with a Justice League/Avengers style cast of world shaking heroes who COULD do world shaking shit, and did. The Superman Parody Apollo actually was powered by the sun and was tough as hell, but the writing always made sure to include that his powers were in fact lessened if he spent time out of the sun. So much so that in at least one big event he mentions flying to the other side of the planet to recharge. MEANWHILE Midnighter who was pretty much the What if you smooshed Batman into Wolverine and made him gay. Yes Midnighter was insanely powerful, but his power was predicting the outcome of actions in a battle so much so he knew how to win any fight he got into just as he was getting into it. He was also... Apollo's boyfriend. They were a mature well done well written non stereotyped gay couple. It was mature, it was sometimes sweet, and well fuck they fought through heaven and hell for each other. The other characters in the group were equally compelling. Including the Doctor Strange Shaman of the earth... who was also a heroin addict, but I digress. This comic not just for the Apollo/Midnighter angle was great, but it also featured one other thing. At times The Authority protected the world... From itself. And yes they even went head to head against the american government due to some seriously dubious actions, of and kidnapping a baby. The Baby in question was the reincarnated Spirit of the 21st Century the former Spirit of the 20th century Jenny Sparks who was A BAD ASS! ANNNNNND this would be one reason I thought not all things sucked in the 90's because although a lot did (Groan Saga is pretty much a good point) THIS did not. Bob if you are not busy, give it a read. Some great stuff in those first volumes.
Old video, but my problem with this was more that Alan Scott pre-New 52 already had a son who was gay, Obsidian, and he was a fantastic character despite his obscurity. Having Alan being gay instead because of name recognition caused Obsidian to be swept under the rug even moreso than he had been before. Personally, I would have preferred it if they'd given Obsidian more of a spotlight since that character is bound to be a star once he enters the public consciousness imo. That all said, I hear that Earth 2 is one of the better New 52 era titles and James Robinson is a great writer so he may've executed things alright. Honestly I skipped almost everything I from N52 aside from The Shade (which was set in the previous continuity so not really N52), Animal Man, and a volume each of Batman/New Guardians (neither I cared enough to follow through beyond that). Maybe I'll backlog it someday, but there's so much good shit in comics right now between Rebirth, Fresh Start, Image, IDW, TKO, Catalyst Prime, AfterShock, BOOM!, Humanoids, etc. that this stunt from years ago still has kneecapped all of my enthusiasm for backlogging.
I just wish these previously non-gay characters didn't get a media blitz before their re-introductions. I remember reading about how DC was about to show off a new lesbian Batwoman, and that's ALL it came off as; showing off. "LOOK AT HOW DIVERSE WE ARE!! LOOK AT HOW DIVERSE WE ARE!!!" If you wanna have gay characters, fine, but stop flaunting it like the trend of the week. Just let the characters do their thing for the sake of the characters doing their thing.
I was worried that they were accidentally going to insult Bi sexuals with this because the original green latern and Black green later (I don't know his name) was suddenly going to be gay. They already had a female love interest and having those girls just for "cover" would have seem like a rude thing on their part unless they wrought it in that their lover interest knew about it and was helping them. I like this decision for diversities sake and for avoiding any unfortunate "bi's don't exist" message some people believe.
kap1618 The black Green Lantern's name is John Stewart. 2 years late? Maybe. But at least you got an answer. And you're right, that would've been incredibly rude to both bisexuals and the Lanterns' respective girlfriends to just suddenly make Hal and John gay.
I dont have an issue with a gay character in a medium. Though I usually prefer when a character is written from the ground up as a gay character and not changed as a publicity stunt on the parts of the writers that doesn't change the dynamic of the character in the slightest. If Green Lantern or Dumbledore are gay so be it. But write the characters that way so it is relevent. Otherwise it is pointless.
I really think this was more of a publicity stunt instead of doing any thing that really matters. But if it was wonder woman than yeah it would mean everything
My issue with it was they erased his kids Jade and Obsidian who was a gay man so we last a woman and gay man to make not even the more known Green Lantern gay. But honestly now with Rebirth and the return of the classic JSA and potentially the return of Jade and Obsidian and I'm totally good with the Earth-2 Alan Scott being gay.
I think the real issue with establishing a new hero who is of a certain group runs the risk of being the "stereotypical" character. A good hero has flaws and if you make a hero who is of a certain minority or subgroup of the population their flaws are usually construed as the authors bias towards that group unless they make a laughingly non stereotypical character then it becomes a dodge and the author is considered cowardly. IMHO
Hm, interesting, i was thinking of making a reply to one of the .... lesser understanding ones below, and did ... but regretted it, and removed the post, thinking it would have removed the reply for that guy too. Obviously, i was wrong, the reply notification to him remained with reply, but since the actual reply here was removed, he instead used the youtube pm, posting a reply to me on how it is unnatural to be gay, but that he anyway has gay friends that he respects?!! Hate is not respect.
there's no point in arguing with atheists and there's no point in arguing with religious people. just compromise and be agnostic. who's right is it to decide if their is a god or not. besides, if you're agnostic, you win the argument either way.
I completely agree. I do, however, think it was a total cop-out to make their token gay character so minor... he's not even a part of the main story-line. I thought that was quite lame, especially since the green lantern character is malleable. sigh
That's a cop out. Atheism isn't about whether or not someone claims to know there is no god or not. Atheism is just the stance of not believing. You can be an agnostic atheist.
In that case why not do away with heterosexuality too? No sexuality represented at all. Because while we tune in for the action and heroics we stay for the drama and character interaction. People enjoy reading about a character's love life and with the world being more accepting of homosexuality naturally these romances include same sex couples.
as long as no one tries to force their beliefs on me, the laws that govern my life and the education given to me or my kids, i don't care what you beleive, i don't hate theists or rational thinking religious people. the problem is you aren't the ones influencing the laws, or trying to re-work the education system to disillusion science and fact, and to be fair the religion and material is where those nut jobs get their ideas/ their goals from, that's why so many people hate on everyone.
DC is just...f*cking dumb. Go Marvel! And for God's sake, stop screwing over your continuity! Remember the 60s through 80s? Those were fine! EDIT: Nothing against LGBT people, but DC does a lot of meaningless changing around like this.
Leo Schue Man, I'm a little late to the party here, but the problem with this is that between the 60s and 80s there weren't any gay superheroes, so if DC did nothing but stick to that continuity there wouldn't be any gay superheroes now. I mean, I get that that probably doesn't affect you hugely, but you like reading about people who are like you, right? With DC heroes especially, the idea tends to be that these are the people you can aspire to be, so let's say you're a gay dude and there's nobody in comics who's like that: that's no fun, right? DC can appeal to a wider audience by making characters that more people can relate to.
dc has created a hispanic gay hero named Bunker featured in Teen Titans thats killing two birds with one stone lol its good we need proper representation of the world not everyone looks like superman im a big fan of Rorshach think he is the realest character out there origins based on real events he is homeless total opposite of bruce wayne.almost like punisher but just so much more mysterious.
their not really any different, it's one of those ironies that make the world and the human race a little bit more stupid and funny at the same time, I hardly ever try and convict people on belief alone, it's actions which i base judgement upon, i was just trying to explain why some people hate on the whole, it's ridiculous, hypocritical but one hundred percent human, the whole arrogance and humility thing that never really sees to sink into some. Makes my head hurt.
I have no problem with gay charcaters. Or characters that come out the closet, but I would perfer brand new characters that happen to be gay instead of recycling old ones. It is very lazy and shows a lack of creativity on the part of the comic industry. I feel the same way about gender flips and racial changes, it feels too uncomfortablly close to a bigamist parody.
cisgendered is an actual term used by actual professionals in actual fields of study, though I understand the cringe, because, as ith everything, tumblr ruined it
***** Bi is not the midpoint between straight and gay. Bisexuality is its own sexuality in which a person has a sexual attraction to both genders equally. Questioning isn't transitioning questioning is the period in many people's lives where they wonder if they're really straight or if they're homosexual. The fact that you not only use the term "tumblrfag" but also "feminazi psychos" clearly shows you lack of any type of understanding beyond your narrow scope of vision.
***** You know nothing of human sexuality yet you feel that you have the sufficient knowledge to comment on it. You call yourself a linguist but instead of using that title to its fullest advantage you throw around insults and swear at anyone who doesn't bow down to your "knowledge". The fact that you're a heterosexual white male makes no difference to me. It doesn't give you a leg up in any argument nor does it handicap you. You must think it does one or the other because why else would you mention it. Also femi-freak is a made up word so is gobshites, and you call yourself a linguist. You neglect to capitalize words that should be capitalized. Next time you declare yourself some all consuming master of the English language why not actually show it by using something other than swearing.
...Ignoring the religious buffoonery on both sides... The pendulum was firmly on one side of the scale for a very long time (white male heterosexual) and now is very quickly swinging the other way. Whether we're past the half-way point in the pendulum swing, equality, or not, is opinion. But if we're not willing to start applying the brakes, (not stop altogether at all, just SLOW DOWN,) then the pendulum is just going to swing all the way to the other side. Which ain't good.
You left out the part where they immediately fridged the boyfriend.
Like, literally four pages or something. I don't even remember how long it took.
Can I just say that this whole thing is all the more groan-inducing because Scott's boyfriend was killed in the first issue, just to make him angry and "edgy"?

DC is just...f*cking dumb. Go Marvel! And for God's sake, stop screwing over your continuity! Remember the 60s through 80s? Those were fine!
EDIT: Nothing against LGBT people, but DC does a lot of meaningless changing around like this.
I guess, but Batman and his entourage are the only good parts of DC.
Well, let's agree to disagree.
Sam Gladwin I'm not necessarily saying stick to the continuity (God knows it's not perfect), but do it in ways that seem less stupid and conciliatory.
I COULDNT!! IT WAS A TOP COMMENT LIKE YOURS!
Golden Age Green Lantern will take you to "Brown Town"
I just don't know why it was necessary to do this.
Well as long as the religious texts people hold so dear have crazy shit in them, the people who believe in them are somewhat crazy.
I really didn't like gay alan be Scott green lantern
What?
Wasn't Wonder Woman always bisexual?
OMG WHO THE HELL CARES
still props for putting it out I guess
dc has created a hispanic gay hero named Bunker featured in Teen Titans thats killing two birds with one stone lol its good we need proper representation of the world not everyone looks like superman im a big fan of Rorshach think he is the realest character out there origins based on real events he is homeless total opposite of bruce wayne.almost like punisher but just so much more mysterious.
their not really any different, it's one of those ironies that make the world and the human race a little bit more stupid and funny at the same time, I hardly ever try and convict people on belief alone, it's actions which i base judgement upon, i was just trying to explain why some people hate on the whole, it's ridiculous, hypocritical but one hundred percent human, the whole arrogance and humility thing that never really sees to sink into some. Makes my head hurt.
Bah, DC's late to the party. Marvel already did this a LONG time ago. Multiply XD
it's just zero sum. his gay son was erased, so they made him gay.
What about bat woman isn't she a lesbian in the new 52?
comics are confusing....i'll stick to tv and cartoons...
So, when is Aquaman coming out of the closet?
The.........................................
Water Closet?
hmm. definatelly not reading new 52 green lantern
fucking disguisting|!
1 person is homophobic
I like moviebob but when he said cisgenderd i cringed a little
I get that, but in all seriousness it's a technical term and not something tumblr hipsters threw together.
cisgendered is an actual term used by actual professionals in actual fields of study, though I understand the cringe, because, as ith everything, tumblr ruined it
LGBT...Q?
thank you
*****
then again it might be short for genderqueer
Its Questioning. Its always been Questioning. The term Queer wouldn't be used considering how often its used as a slur against homosexuals.
What dragon up there or Moviebob?
