    Thanks for the great demonstration. I found a great tutorial on a two light setup. One Tungsten as a fill light, a little more powerful than the one you used, and the same key light you used. Do you normally only use one light or two?

  • @PeterHebert
    @PeterHebert 2 года назад +9

    The other option is to gel the windows with neutral density to bring down the level of light coming in. Then you don't need as bright of a key light.

    Dang i had an interview setup this would have worked on last week, but i had never thought about using my nd inside, then there was my b cam which wouldn’t have had an nd to match. If you dont want the shot so darkly slightly over exposed windows can look ight

  • @usmanmajid7837
    @usmanmajid7837 2 года назад +4

    Great tutorial, I did this exact same set-up with a client last week but I only had a Godox SL-60W. I knew the theory behind the shoot, but it wasn't until I exposed for the windows then put on my light that I thought "why is nothing happening?". Cranked it up to 100%, still barely any key light! 😭😭😭 I didn't realise the keylight had to outshine the window light, and for the first time ever, my SL-60W felt completely useless lol. I usually have it at 10% in my room. Now I understand why stronger lights are required for some scenarios!

    • @SHVideografie
      @SHVideografie 2 года назад +1

      How did you deal with the problem? Tried something else or let the window overexposed? Just curious.

    • @usmanmajid7837
      @usmanmajid7837 2 года назад +2

      @@SHVideografie Yeah I had to slightly bring exposure back up and while the subject wasn't lit as well as I'd have liked him to be, it was enough before the window started to blow out too much. The trailer was actually for a course on death and burial rites, so tbh, the darker mood worked out in my favour this time 😅

      @@usmanmajid7837 Thanks for your reply. I'm at the verge of buying a COB light atm. Guess I'll have to pick a 120watt light then.

    • @usmanmajid7837
      @usmanmajid7837 2 года назад

      @@SHVideografie If you can afford it, and depending on what you'll be shooting, having a stronger light will always give you greater flexibility.

      Yea I literally purchased the godox ML-60Bi. I loved the light until I told the rep at a store that I’ll be using it for interviews. He told me basically it was too weak in most scenarios, so I immediately returned it and purchased an Amaran 200 for 10 dollars more. That was a much better purchase. Higher wattage for the same price. Unbeatable

      Yeah the after was way too dark. He shouldve overexpose the windows a little bit. Also the rim wasn't visible at all

  • @tonypmedia
    @tonypmedia День назад

    I gotta be honest, not everything in life has to be "cinematic" as everybody proclaims on youtube. That HIGH KEY shot in the absolute beginning was nothing bad, A few contrast adjustments raise the offset, lower gamma, maybe raise/lower lift and that would be a great frame. The windows are blown out and guess what, that's 100% ok because they were not "blown", they were exposed properly for a high key frame and you has to make a choice, you blow out or the windows considering there was no massive blooming coming out as well. The low key was good too. Gotta teach it both ways because being in film is not about cinematic 100% of the time. Gene Stoffer's film crew shoots semi-high key with exposed windows, almost natural looking.

    Can't you just crank up the shutter speed to get rid of light in the window.....instead of ND?

    • @AlbertJarodIbay
      @AlbertJarodIbay 3 года назад

      As a rule of thumb always keep your shutter proportional to your shutter speed by 1:2

    • @usmanmajid7837
      @usmanmajid7837 2 года назад

      @@AlbertJarodIbay You're right, but I think you meant proportional to your 'frame rate' instead! 😜 So yes, in filmmaking, once you choose your frame rate (e.g. 24fps) you then double this to select your shutter speed (1/50). Those 2 settings are then locked in. So now you only have ISO and aperture to play with. If you want a blurry background, you'll want to open up the aperture which makes the scene brighter. So now you try to reduce the ISO. But if the lowest ISO setting is still far too bright, you then have to introduce an ND filter.
