Mark Bone how do you feel about color changeable LED tube lights such as the Astera AX1s? I’ve seen a lot of people using them recently and they looks awesome, but wasn’t sure if there was enough control to use them for more narrative stuff.
@@the_allens_ I used those lights on my music video HARM. They're super fun, not always the best when you want to control the spill of light but they allow you to get super creative
I love the ideas in this video. One thing that should be remembered is that day light changes so you gotta work quick. It is organic but you have to plan.
Truth. Clouds, birds, planes, choppers, sometimes you don't notice until you go to edit. ugh. Same with blinds to seal off windows. Unless you black them out, light changes (it gets through) and so does color cast from the blinds. Best to use window light for ambient or rim and use a light for face.
Yeah, you get the good light and you are on a roll but then you take too long or it suddenly changes but you aren't done...what's cool though is that even with that sometimes I have seen where you can still get away with the natural light with a small soft light to boost what's there, do a little camera adjust and extend your available time.
Dude, listening to you is making such a difference to my attitude regarding film making. You obviously take some much pride in your work and have a real passion for it. I can see this channel blowing up this year, thanks for the inspiration Mark.
That 45° angle tactic did more to articulate how to find good light to me than most of the lighting videos I've come across on RUclips. Seriously, thank you Mark!!!
Love the video! However, I think it’s important to remember that all of the lighting setups are relative, and there is no “right way” to light someone. I’ve done corporate work where they want the high-key, talking head look. It’s important to remember to let the context of the video define your lighting method. Cheers! Great video! Your work looks awesome.
Thanks for the update. I'm a DP with over 25 years of Experience and I enjoyed your tutorial. Confirms that I'm doing things right and you even managed to teach me some new tips. Keep up the good work, I really enjoy your vlog.
finally more practical and simple explained cinematography tips. it happens so less. so many people just do gear talk, tech talk an blablabla. your practicailty from the beginning got me hooked from the start off! ;)
@@markbone Oh man -- you're so welcome. I can't even say how glad I was to discover this channel. That you're a Canadian (from Toronto?) is just a bonus. I'm stuck in lockdown in South Africa for a while but once I'm back to North America will definitely use your Amazon links for sure -- keep us posted on anything else which can be done to throw support back your way!
My inner skeptic cannot believe the amount of actionable info your videos contain for free. I'm low key waiting for you to turn this all into a pitch. Even when you do talk about AOD it somehow doesn't come off as snake oil. Pls, whatever you're reason for doing this for, keep it going.
Jesus Mark! Where have you been all my life! This is so great! Thank you so much for such great tips! I have to do a gig soon and light was always the scariest part for me but you just made it reassuring! Keep it up!
Yup. Mark is the real deal. Only good tips. I am baffled. Actually I should know cause I studied all that and yet I recon that I know nothing. Maybe it's because I do not practice enough.
I really enjoy watching your videos because you show what you work on, so many youtubers just talk about it but never show examples from their real 👌👌👌
I love the windows advice. On my thesis film in college I had a room that had three small windows along one wall just above most actors hairline. I blocked so many scenes around where those windows were. Saved so much time on setups.
I have been looking for ways to shape the light simply without all the extra light stands for simple interviews or teaching style videos. This has been fantastic!
Not sure why im surprised you replied to my comment. Thanks a lot! Your videos are top notch and I've learned so much. Subscribed to your channel. I'm pretty new on adding my films to youtube. This is encouraging.
This is perfect, one part of doing a vid for a customer section is a mini doc on why they love their business and this is perfect as they have a fantastic backdrop next to a big open window. Perfect
Thanks again Mark, used this video as a major reference for some heavy run and gun interviewing this week and it worked a charm. This video and the advice to use timelines and not bins when editing are major major lift ups in terms of getting the good shit done!
It's interesting that you had a good example in a school room, as school was where I really studied how light affected mood and memory. I could recall what was being taught by association with the light.
(I know this is not your newest video but I hope you read this) Dude, your channel is a gold mine for information! There's no channel that is as diverse with knowledge and information as your channel. The only one that comes close is Creative North. Other youtubers fall into the trap of slowmo b-roll but you are the real deal! You have the knowledge from actual filmmaking. I watched already a bunch of your videos and I honestly feel like I learned new things. All the best for the future. Subbed.
Thank you so much it will improve my documentaries so much! I never really new why some of my interviews looked great and others terrible... now I get it :)
You are just so good! The most value i’ve seen on RUclips till date. You make other creators that teach on RUclips look like, yeah just less professional and experienced ;).
This is a great framework to reference back to later, thank you for the effort in putting this together! I've been wary of using natural light as it's super shifty this time of year. In Arizona it get super cloudy and the exposure swings can be crazy.
Just found your channel today. I mainly film weddings. At first I didn’t think your channel would help me but I was wrong. I’ve learned so much! Thanks 😊
Amazing Video Mark! I love how there is not a lot of fluff/crazy amount of unnecessary B Roll. Just great amazing practical tips. Just want you to know you are my new favorite RUclipsr.
Bro Mark I love all your videos man. Keep up the good work. I love seeing the budget way to make films. I feel like it makes the film so much more important to the creators and gives the film its own vibe.
awesome awesome n awesome! i shot my own english learning tutorial playing with the window light but after watching it I m feeling better to deal with for the next tutorial.
Near-side key and far-side key each have their uses, but when in doubt go with far-side, and start with something around 45 degrees from the light source.
...but I love lights! Haha :) The best part about tools is knowing when and where to use them. Sometimes, the big ball in the sky fits the bill perfectly.
Great video! I can’t believe the shots you were getting after looking at space. Especially in the classroom. If I didn’t know you were in there, I would’ve had no idea what the location was.
Mark thanks for all the great info in your videos, you have a lot of real world examples from your films plus simple explanations that make each video super informative!
I often use a single 120dii (even tho i have 3 of them lmao) and sometimes some small cheap rbg light for my backlight. They work off battery, last a pretty long time and weren't that costly. My experience with this doesn't fit with your criticism of lighting at all. Not hating on your video tho, these skills are suuuper useful.
Hey Mark! Thanks for an awesome video. I will definitely try and put these tips into practice. What are your go to focal lengths (both A and B cam) for interviews like these using window light?
What is your favourite light to use on set?
Mark Bone how do you feel about color changeable LED tube lights such as the Astera AX1s? I’ve seen a lot of people using them recently and they looks awesome, but wasn’t sure if there was enough control to use them for more narrative stuff.
My favourite light to use on set is the Falcon Eyes SO-48TD, it can be very soft! Great video keep rocking Mark. Cheers.
