- Do you have a passion for food and wondering how to start your own food truck business? That’s what Jen Gustin did when she started the food truck Boss Mama’s Kitchen. With profits growing steadily, she’s found success in the food truck business-and you can, too, if you follow her model.
After working in the corporate world her entire adult life, starting a food truck was Jen’s way to become her own boss without the huge financial investment of a brick and mortar restaurant.
Boss Mama’s Kitchen was named Food Truck of the Year by South Sound Magazine in 2018, just two years after opening. Local media attention and strong partnerships with local businesses are just a couple ways she’s gotten such a loyal following in her area.
In this interview, Jen shares her insider tips on how to start a food truck that grows its profits year after year. She’ll talk about food truck costs (both initial and ongoing), building a customer base, and how Boss Mama’s has stayed afloat through all the challenges of 2020.
One tip from Jen: success in the food truck business doesn’t happen overnight. Building Boss Mama’s Kitchen’s revenue took time and expertise, and it wasn’t always smooth sailing.
If you’ve been wondering how to start a food truck business, you definitely need to watch this interview to learn how Jen navigated the rough patches to keep her business on track.

@@podmck Yes, thank you for pointing that out.
yeah~~ make sure that you wear a mask first! seriously...
Love seeing the journey of Jen!!! I follow her around so I can eat the Best Burger in the Puget Sound!!!
This lady was well-spoken and so honest and professional and hardworking. I hope she goes on to have a long healthy life and makes millions of dollars in her life.
Amen to that!
Started a food truck during this pandemic! Best decision I have ever made!
I'm about to also
@CJCashMoneyIMVU depends bro look around different deals different ways
Good job brotha
@CJCashMoneyIMVU many people don't like to help. Sign up in foodtruck Facebook groups
Prices varies based on equipment inside the truck from 25000 to 150000
@CJCashMoneyIMVU Just do a search for food trucks and you'll see they range from 14k up to over 100k depending on the year of the truck and equipment in it.
I noticed that you took some of the criticism from the last food truck video and applied it to this video. You listened very effectively and didn't really interrupt. Your skills as an interviewer and a host are improving and it's cool you took that criticism and were constructive with it.
We're glad you're seeing the improvement! We've got a lot to learn and improve on and we appreciate your help and support!
@@UpFlip You got my sub! Keep it up!
It probably helps that he has a good interviewer. Not everyone is used to making presentations or being on camera.
I just started my hot dog cart business back in May of this year I have to say I wish I'd bought a hot dog cart 30 years ago instead of busting my azz at my "regular" job. I'm looking into expanding into a food trailer by next spring and go from there!
Im starting my hot dog cart next month! Stoked
@@mackthorpe3646 Awesome!
feel free to hit me up if you're looking for a food trailer supplier
good on ya mate

this was so fun to watch! i need to show this to my dad, he loves watching shows about food and food trucks specifically! can’t wait for part two!
That's awesome! Part 2 is already out, and we also already have another 2 part series on a food truck on our channel!
Love the content! High quality, informative and entertaining. I just hope the lack of views short term doesn't discourage you guys. Keep it up, no doubt will be a very successful channel years to come!
Thank you for the kind words! It doesn't discourage us, we believe and hope it'll grow into something big soon!
@@UpFlip As Garyvee once said, patience.
I love this. I’ve worked in the corporate world all my life. Started out as a waiter at a Caesars resort when I was 16 and we served 1000 people on the weekends. Breakfast and dinner. Became a cook there and have had the dream of a food truck with a simple but good menu to be in the hands of the hungry in short order. Thank you for this deeply informative content. ❤️
We're happy we could provide this for you Craig!
Your videos are fantastic at showing what's possible and how creativity can help us thrive in entrepreneurship, whether it's a food truck or a passion for a specific idea. Keep up the great work!
Thank you! It means a lot to hear that!
The cameraman is moving the camera randomly and needs to hold it without shaking it. Your content is great.
Awesome topic and love your editing on this one!
Thanks so much!
This was very absorbing! Looking forward to part 2!
Glad you enjoyed it! Part 2 is already out!
I found this video very helpful. Thank you both for giving us the "inside" scoop!
This channel is amazing 😍 helping others know the margins of different businesses can open peoples minds
Thanks a lot we really appreciate it!
Currently going through this exact struggle with my SB and I felt every thing she said in this video. It's all so incredibly true.
I like the honesty of this episode. In other food truck videos, they go on about making thousands per month, but this one is realistic and honest about the days where food truck owners lose money.
I like her honesty, she tells it how it is, not all days will be profit. Thank you, because I am thinking about starting a food truck business.
We're glad she could inspire you! Keep us updated :)
YOU GUYS ONLY HAVE 16K? I've been watching for half an hour and thought you'd have got at least a million, maybe even 5! This quality is incredible.
Thank you so much! We really appreciate the kind words!

Fantastic channel Gents! Very glad I stumbled upon it!
Thanks a lot! We're glad you like.
Great girl, great interview. It’s all about grit. You have to have the work ethic. For the people who possess the grit, pressure will make diamonds. Thanks for the great content.
Well said Scott!
We will be seeing you in the neighborhood soon!
I used to build these food trucks from 2013-2016 here in Denver Colorado. It’s crazy how much they cost but building and materials you probably spend about 10k (not including restaurant equipment). We used to get old fedex trucks for like $3000 and put all the steel sheets /FRP walls up and then do the electrical and plumbing. Then the boss would sell them for $60,000+ , definitely a good business and I’m soon going to build my self one, I have a successful carpet cleaning company but I’m ready to expand to food since it’s always been my dream
Sounds like a great business model, and it’s awesome that you have plans to build one yourself. Best of luck with achieving your dream!
Jen tells it straight, happy to see a video with solid answers that aren't full of fluff. Those burgers look delicious as well!
Edit: I own a food truck as well and have had a very similar experience. A lot of brewery bars that don't serve food in my area though, so that's been our niche.
Amazing things I've learned from this video:
1)three things have got to be important to you: your customers, your products and the process of making stuff
2)you are gonna have ups and downs. You can make a few grands in a day, and no money in another one
3)if you don't try stuff out, you'll never know what the outcome is. Keep your foot on the gas and you'll make your way up there
about to watch the second part of this episode ;)
Mate u r doing a great job. Keep it up ❤🔥✌️
Thanks for sharing this!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you so much it was very beneficial
I like Jen. She was very raw and honest. Thanks
Happy to hear that!
Loved the video. Having a food truck Is absolutely fun. Lot of hard work but when your customers are happy it is definitely worth it. We are in Nacogdoches, Texas. Shali’s Indian kitchen on wheels, only Indian restaurant on wheels in east Texas. Those who are interested in starting a food truck I would say go for it. Thank you UpFlip.
Absolutely! Sounds like you're in it for the right reasons :) Thanks for sharing your story. It's awesome that you were able to bring something new and unique to your area!
Awesome content! That food looks delicious!

I'm planning on getting a food truck. Right now I have booths at the YellowGreen farmers market, and yes That is very true Jen, that even your'e not in your store/truck, you're not working, so not true. you're . In the beginning its a lot of work. This is a nice video. very informative.
This lady is true to the bone, she's gold
Yes she is!
there are cities/counties/states, that you can just setup just anywhere on a city street. chicago is one of them, as it should be.
She's really attractive and confident. Wish her continued success.
We wish her success too!
What an inspiration. Great interview.
Thanks for watching Lemar!
Wow this is so well produced and informative
Thanks a lot!
@@UpFlip your channel needs more subscribers, this is honestly entertaining and effortful business content that isn't some dude talking over stock footage or some Jake Paul looking kid trying to get you in on his pyramid scheme
Cost vary greatly just like profits. I’m glad she’s living her dream that’s amazing. Unfortunately I don’t have 100 thousand and a supportive spouse but it’s not stopped me yet. You can start small and roll your profits into better equipment as you go.
Food truck business is my aim 🙏 I'm a RUclips chef for now , I'm qualified but financial situation is the hold back but hopefully in the near future
That's awesome! Keep growing and working hard and you can always achieve it!
Some good food for my brain, thank you!
Glad you liked it!
I'm so glad I found you're video. I've been in banking since 2003 I'm currently building my first food truck. Trying to get out of the rat race.
How awesome! Best of luck to you!
Try landscaping maybe
How's it going so far
I have a fully equipped food truck but have no idea what to do with it what type of food we basically inherited it
People need to say Financially Supportive not just supportive
Good info.
She said something very important, in Business, YOU NEED A PARTNER, I have a Food Business and I see
that the only fact I'm missing; is, that I'm a widow and I work alone, is functioning but I dream to have a real conversation with other human that is in the same boat with me and found the daily solutions together.
If you do this alone, you need to be focus, persistent, ultra responsible, and try to enjoy what you do if not
this is a very heavy routine, AMEN THAT I'M 64 years young, GREAT VIDEO, THANK YOU SO MUCH.
Very informative and step by step process.
Glad it was helpful!
Very informative, been planning for a food truck that sells my families traditional food from Serbia. As great as it sounds, it seems I might drop the idea due to the fact most of the products are just too pricy for profit.

It’s all about prep ! The better you prep the faster you get, make sure to get ore orders locked in and have a plan on what locations to have, work it out with the owners
These are some great tips! You should always be prepared before going in too deep.
Mise en place
I am interested in getting a food truck here in Columbia, South Carolina. I have been with my current employer for 17 years as a cashier at a local fast food place.
nice n professional business i love it as long as its sanitary and food taste good its perfect.
this channel is so amazing with the restaurant and food business ideas
Thank you! Do you have a business topic you want to see next on the channel? 🤔
Look up Custom Catering Trucks and Parts in California they have custom food trucks
This is a really good video
Can tell she's corporate from the way she talks too lol
Love Jen and Boss Mama Kitchen Food!!! The Best Burger in the Puget Sound!!!

This is my dream job gonna do one in the land down under tell her she doing awesome
Started up Rollie Pollie Egg Roll Factory in Morgantown, West Virginia last September. best decision and so much work, but all worth it!!!
Such an interesting business model.
Definitely!
That’s the biggest fire extinguisher I’ve ever seen in my life!!!!
Seems like she keeps winning Food Truck of the year.
Informative vid for sure! "right?!" 😅🤘🏼
Do you have to rent a commissary kitchen, even your truck is equipped? Thanks.
Good luck to all of yall , i was thinking of doing a southern style breakfast truck but im not sure if its just me that likes breakfast that much 😂
And also does anyone know can the bathroom be at a personal/private residence with approval obviously but could you use someone's front yard if it's on a like a main road and they will let you use their bathroom for your business if needed ?
Thanks for watching! ☺️
Your food looks delicious 😋..add sanitation & safety to your business mantra..👍👍
It's very yummy!
I am trying to start a food truck business ! What would you recommend I do ?
@Upflip what make an model is this type of food truck?
Thank you
We just need to figure out the funding hurdle and we'll be on the road!
I wish I didn't feel like she was trying to sell me on how great it is for her business as well as wishing she was more gracious about letting the interviewer speak without bring cut off. Take a breath, if you're successful with your work, there's no need to sell us on it, we can figure it out. I'm happy for her, just take a breath.
Nice video very raw and honest I enjoyed it , now to future business owners and cooks remember to wear hair nets when cooking 💜
Happy to hear you enjoyed it! Good piece of advice too :)
I’ve been cooking professionally for 15 years and I never wear a hairnet. I wear a ball cap though.
"Wearing hairnets when cooking" is needed. I teach ServSafe/food safety and tell its importance to food professionals, new ones. ruclips.net/channel/UC8PtVzyaK3pDD66q45dpIFA
Nice episodes, but your questions barely scratch the surface of what we need to know to start a food truck. For example, how much is her profitability, food cost vs price, how many people she employs, how long the truck is open, how she went about branding, etc.. i have only watched the first episode so maybe some questions will be answered in the next one, but thats my impression after watching this one and parts 1 and 2 of the Vet Chef episodes..
I am thinking of setting up a food truck and I want to start on a really minimalistic approach , not because of the initial costs but because I want to see some profitability asap. I cook a lot since I am a teenager and I think now it is time for me to start something after having worked in the corporate world . I am thinking of making French pancakes (crêpes) and homemade lemonade from an old Northern African recipe I have so something really basic and would be based in the French Caribbean as I am French it is easier (no need of work permit etc ...) but my question is more about choosing the locations and the tools to choose them , have you heard of people using sort of economic intelligence (i.e heat map ) to decide where to first try ?
We haven't heard about economic intelligence but we can ask the next food truck we interview :)
Subscribed! Excited to start here in ATL.I will be featured on your most viewed episode!
Yay! Sounds super exciting. That's the attitude!
Hello guys am from South Africa, m new on the channel
Nice. Im seriously thinking about a truck or trailer. Philly Girls Waffles on Wheels.
A waffle truck would be awesome!
Still, I have doubts about opening my dream food truck. I hope one day, my dreams come true.
start with spot in commissary kitchen not so much investment and you can see how is to work on your own!
Start small so doesn’t seem
Like a dream.
Boss Mamas Kitchen.👏🏾👏🏾
Awesome!
Thanks!
It would be great if you can do a series of videos about starting a food truck ranging from permits to wholesale shopping to commissary kitchen to P.O.S. starting from nothing and ending with the grand opening. I would love to be your test subject for this. Feature me with your help and resources (sponsors, donations, etc) going thru the entire process as I know nothing about the food truck business but I want to start one.
Very interesting idea Jeff. Would be extremely expensive and difficult to execute however. If you want to start a food truck you should check out our blog guide on the topic and our other food truck videos on how to do exactly that! We should have even more food truck business content coming out as well so stay tuned.
Thanks for sharing. We have a fully equipped food truck that we inherited. We are trying to get started it's a 25' pull behind fully stainless steel restraunt grade. What to do with it now ???? I have no food experience besides eating food
What is your favorite type of food? Have you thought about contacting any talented local chefs/cooks for ideas or maybe even a business partnership.
This is just good dang stuff
Glad you enjoyed it! Were you inspired to start your own food truck business? ☺️
And always keep in mind u must have a prep kitchen or use commisary to operate truck
Yes alot of people forget about this 💯
That depends on the state. In Florida you are not required to have a commissary.
I am in california and I believe the codes here for the trucks are hardest
People, process and product
She spoke on how tough it was but she never told what was tough
I would love to start a food truck, any chance you would give me so advice?
Do you think this 16 feet expandable trailer that sits 24 people can turn a food truck business to a all year operation?
Inspired 🇿🇼
That grilled cheese with onions and bacon looks SO good!
It is so good! Thanks for watching!
I didn’t see that you’re filming in Canada ?
Yo so I'm curious about that restroom part, lots of busisnesses don't have public restrooms, especially fuel stations. We have all been there I'm sure, you go in after being on the road to grab a snack and drink, get some relief and the cashier tells you no public restroom.
The way she answers questions, I'm shocked this lady had a "corporate" job.
Looks great im disabled looking to possibly start a truck
Where’s a good place to get cooking equipment, or good site?
E bay or Amazon
Can you guys help guide me starting in the food truck business!?
Hello, So when you are parked at Center Collision, there is a bathroom five hundred feet away?
Food Truck bathroom situations are forever changing.
People never go into, how do you not profit in the beginning?
Hello, Can you please suggest how to buy a food truck at a reasonable price? Please help.
Hi Vinay! We have a blog post about this, check it out here: www.upflip.com/blog/how-to-start-a-food-truck-business
I just caught the part where she said she has to be near a restroom..that's not part of the code here in NC.
I’m sure it varies state to state maybe even county.
@@cookncrook6902 I have a hot dog cart business in the Raleigh NC area and all county's have to go by State code. If I were her I'd ask another inspector in her county about it.
