When Larry Carlton graciously invited Premier Guitar to visit his Nashville studio, we jumped at the chance. He played guitar, told stories, and pretty much proved he's the coolest person any of us will ever meet.
"I'm not a collector," Carlton explains, "I just have a few guitars I like to play." For someone who has tracked as many sessions as Carlton, three Gibsons, two Fenders, and two Valley Arts 6-strings might seem like a modest number, but each one is very special.
The belle of the ball is Carlton's #1, a 1969 Gibson ES-335 he purchased new in '69. This is the guitar that earned him the “Mr. 335” moniker. It has seen a few changes over time, including Schaller tuners, a graphite nut, a KTS titanium bridge, and several re-fret jobs.
A fan gave Carlton his second ES-335, which is a 1968 model. Its pickups were swapped out for a matched pair of 1961 Gibson PAFs.
Next in the Gibson family is a stock 1955 Les Paul Special in TV yellow.
Carlton covers the Fender sound with his 1954 Fender Telecaster and his 1962 Fender Stratocaster. Both are completely stock and utterly beautiful. The only modern-ish guitars are a custom Valley Arts T-style and a Valley Arts small body acoustic. The latter resembles a Martin 000, but features a different soundboard bracing pattern.

I remember every note of every one of Larry's solos on all the Steely Dan tracks he played on. They're THAT memorable.
Wow, even Glamour Profession? I'm not a guitar player, but that solo is pretty ephemeral, or subtle, I guess you could say. Anyone, cool comment.
@@giovanna722 I'd call that more of a series of fills rather than a true solo. It's just so laid back, like the whole song. "I'm too wasted to have the energy for a real solo" is the whole attitude of the song.
I started listening and following Larry Carlton when I was in my teens. He is probably the biggest influence in my playing. Have been a huge fan over his entire career.
Yeah Larry!! Best of the best!!
Hey Nathan ! I really appreciate the "Amazing grace" you played with Larry in a previous 4 play album. I love so much the sound of this track and of course the guitars sound of both of you. Your bass is always at the right place Nathan ! You can thank your Dad and Mum for this natural gift ! Frédéric Jacquet - France.
And such a nice gentleman..!
Nathan East I guess you would know! :)
Nathan East you too, man
Wow Mr. East, hello and thank you for your musical magic =)
What a lovely humble guy, for such a legend and amazing player.
He seems so humble. Like he doesn't know how awesome he is.
Interviewer John was great, asked all the right questions, things we wanted to know, properly respectful of a legend. Wonderful to see Larry talk, all comfortable and relaxed, in his home turf. One of the best rig rundowns I've seen.
In addition to being a world-historic talent, Larry Carlton is one of the most decent people in any creative field, and I loved the kind and respectful comments he made about other musicians.
He's truly one of the nicest people I've met. I had a chance to sit down and trade licks with him when I was 19 yrs old. He was so cool. Even invited me to his gig! He is also one of the most musical guitarists. Larry is a true Musician.
Who is this Larry wannabe? Couldn't make it passed the ad at the front
Ok
Yeah I think so too ! And I still wondering what the hell the Guy who shot him possessed
?? I'm very happy he survived the whole ordeal !
In the past I have allways thought there are A lot of disturbing people walking around the States but lately the amount of shootings in my country is raised to alarming numbers,I can remember that when I was just 13 years old that in the Netherlands only One person per year was killed well that's just a faint memory
He’s always been a gentleman.
Probably the best Rig Rundown of all of them. It felt so comfortable, homey, down to earth.
Class act and a true guitar legend. Thank you Mr. Carlton for your great music and inspiration.
I recently bought an 81 ARIA Pro II TA 100 es 335 from an estate sale. When I got home I went through the case and found a napkin from an old club from the 80’s with Larry’s autograph on it. The coolest part was I bought the guitar because of Larry’s use of his Gibson 335. It made the whole deal that much cooler.
I know this is a older video but after viewing I felt compelled to comment on it. I've played guitar since I was 12 and always played since. I'm now 59. I love all music that has great guitar regardless of style, anything from AC/DC to Steely Dan, and I've listened to all of it all my life to date. Having said that, one of my all time favorite guitarist is Larry Carlton because of his tone, creativity, great songs, his contributions to music in general, etc. Now back to this video. It was one the best artist gear type videos I've ever seen. The video quality itself is great, the details of all aspects of the gear, little stories provided by Mr 335, the guitar tech providing technical details of Mr Carlton's setup preferences, wow. I tip my hat to all involved in project. Thank you.
I must say Bolinger is getting much better. He listens and lets the artist talk . Also, knows so much about guitars, etc.
He .is giving respect..this dude is an ICON..HE WAS /IS THE CAT Mr 335
John is a great guy, it's always a pleasure to check his Rig Rundown videaos or read his columns in Premier Guitar.
One of my favourite players and comes across as an absolute gentleman. Thank you for Kid Charlemagne and Room 335.
Larry has always presented himself as a gentleman; always refreshing to see and hear.
Don't forget Don't take me alive
Best Rig Rundown interview ever. I know this is about gear, etc., but Larry seems to be one of the kindest, most sincere caring people that has ever been featured by Premier Guitar. A super fantastic guitar player, but the love in his heart out shines his playing to infinity. What a blessing to all mankind he is. Thank you Larry and John.
Well, unlike with Kiss where you'll need to buy a $2500 special ticket to have a meet'n'greet with band members, you're very likely to have met Larry if you intended one of his gigs... Actually, it's the case for most of artists in the jazz/fusion/blues/folk scenes: they mainly play in clubs and small venues, there is no "wall" between them and the public... They don't see themselves as "stars", "divas" or some kind of supernatural beings. If s.o. like Larry has to hire bodyguards, it's not for himself but because of insurance request as he moves with now extremely expensive vintage guitars. Had I owned a 335 (I'm not very into corporate or "vintage" guitars, near all my stuff comes from artisans or small companies), his autograph would be on my guitar now instead of one of his albums ;-) If you intend one of his gigs, don't leave the venue as soon as the gig end, you'll soon discover that Larry is truly as cool and nice you felt watching this video ;-)
Oh my god, fan-boying hard on this one. "You know, when I was touring with Stanley Clarke and Billy Cobham..." Damn! The axes are stunning. What they were used to play is among the pantheon of greatest music. And Larry is an all around great, humble guy through it all.
It’s hard to get more amazing than Larry Carlton. Such a great human and ambassador!
I went to see him in Seattle years ago and he sat and talked with everyone during his break and signed autographs so I bought a CD and had him sign it, very nice guy.
I'm trying to figure out why anyone would dislike this. How odd. What a great player and class act.
This is pure gold. One of the finest guitar players in the world and the great John Bohlinger asking the perfect questions. Thank you very much for this, Premier Guitar.
I saw Larry at the Baked Potato up close on the front table and was blown away with his playing. I went back the following night to watch him again and Paulino Da Costa was behind me which I was not aware till he introduced him and he ended up jamming with him.
FALL FROM GRACE the guy that bought my valley arts Steve lukather model used to watch Toto there and had to have mine. They never come up for sale.
That was just delightful. I've been a big fan of Larry's for 30+ years, and he just seems t keep getting better and better. Thank you very much for this great interview.
Who is this Larry wannabe?
The interviewer is very good, and Larry is the man!
There's an argument going on here, about this interviewer; why don't you join in mate!!
Unlike a lot of jazz fusion guitarists, Larry Carlton has an instantly recognizable tone, thanks to those skillful fingers of his. He’s doing a lot of favors with his ES 335s and Strats.
Imagine everyone being as nice as Larry...such a legend!
He's completely confident and has nothing to prove. Makes for a relaxed persona.
It's always great to watch a true musician who plays guitar brilliantly and also has a joy for music which is infectious... even better to see him interview the legend that is Larry Carlton
what a lovely down to earth guy. wonderful interview.
Can't overstate the class of this outstanding musician. Thanks for posting.
Wow, Larry Carlton. You were/are such an inspiration to me and my peers. "Point It Up" was a improvisational masterpiece as were so many of your songs. Your feel is unpresidented and the way you work with your tones is incredible. Your soloing lives within the guitar. You become one with timeings. You were shredding before we had a word for it. Great guitarist of these times are great because of you. Thank you Larry Carlton.
I am amazed at the simplicity. Then I thought, has anyone thought about checking Willie Nelson's rig? Must be even more mind blowing.
Larry is so down-to-earth to be such a talented fellow. One of my guitar heroes for sure.
Larry is one of my guitar heroes, for all time.
The man, and his music, is just timeless!
Keep doin' what you do, Larry. We love you!
I really appreciate Larry Carlton's acknowledgement that there is more to making a bebop record than simply picking up a guitar, having a ton of chops and playing in that style.
Everybody need one guy like Rick in life.
Larry is a true artist, a world-class musician, and a beautiful human being.
I am absolutely unafraid to say,, Larry Carlton is THE most unique guitarist of all time! Ask yourselves,, who else even sounds close to his style and technique?? The closest person would be Robben Ford, but he has a bolder, less warm tone and technique,, which is what everyone loves about Larry's playing. Larry delivers the shivers,, he plays FROM the heart,, TOO the heart. Also, Larry is an excellent composer/arranger, and his list of television show theme songs is as long as your arm! From blues, to bebop, to fusion and jazz,, he is a master at them all!
Superb interview of the incredible Larry Carlton. A long time favorite back when he was in hte Jazz Crusaders. So down to earht and open, willing ot share his knowledge & experience with us mere mortals ! BRAVO
Grew up listening to larry. He is my guitar hero in the 80s n 90s.until today. 30yrs plus.
31:30 "The man [Joe Pass] has set the standard...". Preach, Larry! Every guitarist on the planet needs to be very familiar with Joe's catalog.
Dadrian Wilson Joe Pass is a beast.
Best of the best. Chet Atkins is another one.
@@Steaminlidz I like how you said “is” instead of “was”. His mastery is certainly immortal.
The first five are literally my dream guitars in that order ! What a lucky dude
Larry you're so badass I just glad that maybe you would read this. You inspired me greatly as a young guitarist.
What a great interview... proof that the most important part of sound is in the player more than the gear..
Classy and humble player! Larry's thoughtful comment about doing a straight jazz thing like Joe Pass was illuminating. Especially since he can play his butt off doing jazz guitar. Amazing player.
The first time I plugged a 335 into my rig, I was stunned how much different it sounded than my other Gibsons. That guitar is now my #1 - I had to go back to the drawing board with overdrives, compression and especially tweaking the bass EQ throughout the signal chain. Worth the hassle though - I swear all my guitars sound better now.
Larry has always been my biggest influence, as a guitar player.
Larry has been my favorite electric guitarist for many years. I love my 2005 Gibson ES-335 Larry Carlton model, too. It's in mint condition and one of the best electric guitars I own.
Larry we love you, thanks for all the great guitar and memories, God Bless
It's always amazing to see Larry Carlton speaking and playing (of course). I profoundly agree with him about having just instruments I would have time to play. Of course if the budget allow it.
Im thinking Bolinger is doing great. He knows his gear, history, and has a firm grasp of the artist's work. No ego to rub the artist the wrong way. All the guys who are bagging on him. I have one thought. Are you getting a since that the artist doesn't like him?
No but, someone might be getting a sense.... since you asked makes sense. Dollars and cents since sense is what youre sensing
That makes a lot of scents!
@@golf-freq Sensational plays on words gentlemen...........
Well said. People posting negative comments are projecting how they feel. They just don't realise it because they're so narrow minded. Poor dears.
sence you wanna be sinceless about it I since he`s all good and very copasetic. Kinda like me. The other day the wife tells me she sinces i`m not as interested anymore. Not as sincious she said. I said i`m sincious and so are are you. And sincious up? Get me a beer!
The BEST Rig Rundown EVER!!!! Larry Carlton rules!
Nothing but love for Larry. Talent on loan for sure. Thanks for making me the guitar player i am.
great interview - will repost - thanks John Bohlinger & Premier Guitar !
I rarely suffer from envy, however Larry having a technician dedicated to his guitars just turns me green. I should have practiced more.
Artist and gentleman. Thanks Larry, thanks John
I find John so great in these interviews, his knowledge of the artist and his skill as an interviewer are great. This one is fabulous.
I have a 78 es335 TD and it has that great 335 sound. There's a specific sound that comes with it that a Les Paul doesn't have
Larry Calton, you could do any album at all and I would listen intently to it. You have and still are a huge influence to me. Love your every note.
Thanks for a great open interview and great stories.
Long Live Larry.
I've always love John as an interviewer!
Larry is a Master on guitar!! Sweet and soulful.
One of the best Rig Rundowns in my opinion. Thanks very much!
Knight Rider's KITT lives on in Larrry Carlton's gear! Fantastic! :D
Man i just love his playing style
Excellent interview...thanx Larry! Dont take me alive . . . whoa . . . playin it now!
My fave tone has always been his old 80s Valley Arts/EMGs sound.
Amazing discussion, with a Master among Masters. Thanks to all of you.
I'm not a particularly dedicated fan of Larry Carlton, but I really appreciate the open, plainspoken way he explains his gear preferences. This was an educational rig rundown for me.
Great rig rundown of Mr. 335 one of the best out there
Larry is one of the worlds best guitarist and that's why he's one my favorites.
Great talent and friendly guy.
This was phenomenal. Best rig-rundown and interview ever. I agree with him ( go straight into the amp and have the effects on that direct-tone ) like printing Dry to tape. Larry is such a nice guy - too. Really enjoyed this. Stay Safe guys.
At the end of every component of the rig back and forth to each other “ yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah” lol
Baby I'm so sorry, I apologise for loving Larry Carlton's talent .
Always great to hear from you Larry! Thanks so much for sharing all this.
Thank you for displaying Larry's rig! The guitars and stories behind are just fascinating! The simple set up of his pedal board were eye opening. Thanks for the music Larry, love your sound!
I think Larry is the best all-around guitarist that I've even seen on a stage. I'm a huge fan of LC.
larry seems to be a man of few words, doesn't he? really calm and collected, you don't see many guitar players like him these days...
Man, Larry C is so humble and patient. He could make a tin can sound great. Wish I could get lessons from this guy.
Joe Pass is a huge hero of mine as well. Have loved Larry's playing since I was a kid. My style and tone were definitely influenced by both. Great interview. loved hearing that Larry is a big Joe Pass fan too.
I was never a huge Larry Carlton fan until I saw him live with the Sapphire Blues Band in a small jazz club in London about 2005. Great tone, amazing gig, he was totally in his element.
I was at that gig; jazz cafe in Camden. Larry was great!
Larry is amazing both as musician and as a person.. thx for great video
This is a great interview! I love Larry's live tone- of course his studio tone is out of this world :D.
Met Carlton once, very cool and humble guy! Love his playing....
Saw Larry mid 80's with Stanley Jordan outside in Cary NC awesome outdoor sound
Larry Carlton is such a great talent. With his skill, you'd expect or maybe not be surprised if he was an arrogant sod but he's not at all. Very down to earth and pretty humble seeming. Mentioning his son Travis reminds me of the times I've seen Travis playing with Robben Ford. Travis is a top-class bass player too. A family of top-class musicians that's for sure.
The sessions this guy has done are legendary! Wish we had footage of studio recording! That would be gold!
A pleasure to hear!
Wow, 👍🏾🎸I loved the Blues he played in the first 40 seconds of video !!! What a well seasoned Musician ! 😊
Best Rig Rundown available, hands down.
John I've seen a couple of your interviews, and I want to thank you for doing a great job!!! In the 70's, I used to see Larry all the time playing at Dante's, and The Baked Potato... I remember when both he, and Robin Ford were using those early Mesa Boogie Amps. Great times!
Why did Larry stop using the Dumble Amps?
Thanks again!
Never forget the story of Larry complimenting his band for playing through a rough concert with poor acoustics. I never forgot that when I play. Things are not always going to be perfect, and the real professionals will play though it.
One of my all time favs... Larry boy! :-)
I bought a 335 in 1981 JUST BECASUE Larry played one !! Great guitar !!!! ;)
Wow I've never seen someone mic up for effects in a live setting but it makes perfect sense. I bet it sounds killer
Kudos to Premier Guitar for a great interview. Larry is a great player and a great man. God Bless!
just gob smacked by this gentleman's tone...just a beautiful player.
I love his perspective on gear! Not bashing anyone who collects, but I love the fact that he travels with and plays his 335. Play it 'til it can't be played anymore!
Man, the 80s were THE time to buy priceless vintage. My guitar teacher has a story trading a Roland synth guitar for a mint (at the time) 62' strat... Beautiful gear
That's true of certain guitars. Pre-CBS Strats and 50's Les Pauls were already quite expensive, but late 60's models and some from the 50's were still very affordable. You could buy old Teles for a song. I had bought a near mint '54 ES-175 and a '68 ES-340 for around $600 each back then. Wish I had been smart enough to hang on to them!
Think I would have kept the Roland Synth guitar myself - each to their own!
Everybody loves this guy. Thanks larry love you
MIchael KNight and Kitt called they want their tuner back. on serious note, this pretty fly interview, dig this cool cat. The interviewer is pretty awesome and genuinely excited, and still to this day
Awesome guitarist incredibly versatile player with tone to die for. And he seems like a genuinely nice guy.
