    Who is Ron Spomer
    For 44 years I’ve had the good fortune to photograph and write about my passion - the outdoor life. Wild creatures and wild places have always stirred me - from the first flushing pheasant that frightened me out of my socks in grandpa’s cornfield to the last whitetail that dismissed me with a wag of its tail. In my attempts to connect with this natural wonder, to become an integral part of our ecosystem and capture a bit of its mystery, I’ve photographed, hiked, hunted, birded, and fished across much of this planet. I've seen the beauty that everyone should see, survived adventures that everyone should experience. I may not have climbed the highest mountains, canoed the wildest rivers, caught the largest fish or shot the biggest bucks, but I’ve tried. Perhaps you have, too. And that’s the essential thing. Being out there, an active participant in our outdoor world.

    Yes. Everyone has a different budget, but comparing $1,000+ rifles to a $500 rifle isn't fair.
    Your budget rifles should have been the Mosssberg you used, a Savage Axis, and a Ruger American.
    THOSE are low-budget entry rifles. I have very few rifles that top above $1,500 and they ALL shoot well. The rifles I have chambered for .30-06 are not high-end. I have a Mossberg 100 ATR that shoots 5/8" groups all day with my loads in all weights I have a Savage Axis (I don't really like it because of the cheap stock, but it shoots 13/16" groups with Federal blue box ammo, and so I won't reload for it). I have a Savage 111 with a laminated thumbh9le stock (that put the price up into the $1,200 range) that shoots CLOVERLEAF groups with reloads. I have a re-barrelled K-98 Mauser with open sights that easily shoots 2" groups with reloads (this is on its way to becoming a 35 Whelan for a bison hunt next winter).
    As my most expensive rifle, I have a Ruger M77 Hawkeye (purchased second-hand) that shoots 1/2" groupswith 165gr Corelokt ammo.
    Being an "everyman" hunter, my scopes are not high-end, either, but I fill my tags every season, no matter which tags I get.

    Ron. Dropping floor plate with a picatinny rail across the action can easily be loaded from the bottom. Actually, I load ALL my floor plate rifles this way.
    Open the floor plate. Turn the rifle upside down and point a bit low. Drop 3 rounds in. Close the floor plate as you give the rifle a shake. Open the action. Everything is ready to go. Chamber a round.

    I'm a huge fan of a 2 stage trigger in and 18 to 20 inch SPR/DMR AR15, but not sure how I'd feel about it with a bolt action hunting rifle. Maybe a long range precision shooter it would be ok because you get to the wall and rest til everything else falls into place.

    I know that the Howa is going to be one of the most accurate because I have a couple of them if you will test one.
    My Howa 30/06 pokes 3 rounds into a single jagged hole when I let the barrel cool off for fifteen minutes between shots.

  • @davidlaney8254
    @davidlaney8254 3 месяца назад

    Just to build on your hunting accuracy point, it’s that first shot that matters most. And due to improved production processes, today’s factory barrels don’t require fouling. You can clean them after each use and see virtually no POI shift with clean, cold bore shots taken days or months apart. And your barrel will thank you for keeping it consistently clean, rather than consistently dirty.

    I bought a beretta brx 1 in 308 a year or so ago. I was tossing up between 308 or 30-06 at the time, it came down to availability of the 308. I wish I had waited for the 30-06 now, I can always buy another barrel and mag for the 30-06 though.

    • @brianhoxworth3881
      @brianhoxworth3881 3 месяца назад

      That 308 will do anything you need, I wouldn't worry about the difference between the two cartridges. I would even say the 270 would be fine too.

      @brianhoxworth3881 if beretta were chambering the brx 1 in 270 I would have gotten that instead. I've switched to copper projectiles and want to keep the speed up, hence 30-06>308.

    Japanese glass isn’t a disadvantage at all.
    The Vortex Razor HD (top tier scope) has Japanese glass.
    Japanese glass is slightly less high contrast and the colours are slightly less “warm”but in general Japanese glass is very sharp and has unrivalled edge to edge picture quality

    • @BusterBibb
      @BusterBibb 3 месяца назад +1

      Let’s be clear…though I’m not sure now but I do know that years ago Leupold used Japanese glass as well..but again I don’t know if currently.
      Japanese glass was at one point simply the best optic glass.
      I had some issues on two Leupold scopes back in 2009…Leupold..Leupold warranty shop insisted there was nothing wrong with those scopes even though the scopes would not hold zero.
      I began using Bushnell elite series scopes snd never looked back.
      After Bushnell install on my Savsge 30-06 test firing proved conclusively that the Leupold Vari X 2 line of scopes were pure garbage. I sent one of the Leupold scopes back one last time with the sight in target using the Bushnell Elite…getting confirmation Leupold warranty shop had received the scope..I called the shop and was rudely berated (true!) snd the dude hung up on me. I called back of course…spoke to another rep and aired my frustration of Leupolds inferior scope line. Scope sent back snd as expected..wasn’t fixed.
      Just saying…Japanese glass in well built scopes..I’m all in!

    • @BusterBibb
      @BusterBibb 3 месяца назад

      And Leupold lost a lot of loyal customers because of shotty scopes that Leupold tried to market namely those Vari X 2’s with Leupolds Friction Adjustment Turrets.
      I spoke to a Leupold sales rep at one particular event..he 100% said that line was a total flop and nearly 60% of those scopes failed.
      Let’s be clear…the Vari X 2’s were not cheap costing..lower than Vari X 3’s but still pricy.
      I now have approximately 15 Bushnell Elite scopes. Had problem with one of those 15..Bushnell “Replaced” that scope with a higher Elite model..no charge!!
      Take that Leupold!!

    Ron really came alive with these actions. It should be obvious that all of these rifles were equally in need of improvement. I think that's the beauty found within. Simply, reloading the fired cases with the best performing bullets and the propellent which most fills the case capacity you'll have em all capable of 500-600 yard big game rifles. 🍑

      Not in any practical way. It could, if he were shooting at a very extreme angle, or at very long range, but at 100 yards any difference would fall way below the margin of error of the ammo and the shooter.

    • @BusterBibb
      @BusterBibb 3 месяца назад

      No…because it’s the same elevation…shot after shot and the same relative temperature/humidity, which at 100 yards…it’s not a factor.
      In real life hunting in sharp uphill/downhill shots at long distances..to some extend yes. That’s at long distances.
      At 100 + - ..just place the crosshairs on the boiler room and shoot

      Howa rifles have been around for a long time. Interestingly…Smith and Wesson for a time marketed a bolt action rifle using their name brand. The rifle was simply a Howa rifle branded with the name Smith and Wesson along with a twin bar 12 gage shotgun line sporting the name S&W.
      The Smith and Wesson rifle I had brand new by the way..shot very well and chambered in 30-06. Action was standard push feed and plunger eject. Smooth.
      Jesus I really wished I’d kept that 30-06…some criminal stole the 12 ga shotgun out of my truck. But the point is…Howa is a well built rifle that isn’t expensive all things considered (I think I paid $200 back in 85..!!) snd mine came in a hardwood stock that glass bedded easily.
      All of these Tupperware stocks now. Just garbage.
      I will say however that most budget rifles will shoot good enough if upgrades are done. And I’ve had in my years expensive rifles that just wouldn’t group for snot no matter what we tried. So..this is why I always start with the basic rifle (Mostly) then rework til I get a good shooter. Repeatable accuracy that is respectable.
      I’d rather snyvday shoot a Japanese made rifle than a Chinese made rifle..any day!!

    The fun part about cheap rifles is that once in a while you stumble onto a super-accurate one. Have to start with new rifles because practically nobody really sells a used accurate rifle. I bought lots of used rifles from online auctions and pawn shops but only found two who were super-accurate. The best gem was a Marlin XS-7 in 243, for $245. A friend had good luck sending a cheap rifle back to the manufacturer complaining about poor accuracy and got it back a tack driver.

    I noticed, especially on the CZ, that you were rocking your front rest forward. Plain old sandbags might have been better. All of those rifles are probably still in their break-in infancy. Being that they are hunting rifles, small groups are less important than cold bore consistency. If that 1st shot lands in that red circle after sighting in, you are good to go.
    I shoot mostly 180s in my 30-06. They do the trick on everything.😉

      I ditched adjustable rifle rests a long time ago..I use “Bulls Bag”…filled with sand and it’s very heavy but will hold your rifle incredibly steady. Snd controls muzzle jump extremely well.
      Occasionally I’ll use a quality buttstock bag for extra support snd holy moly!! Talk about no movement whatsoever!! Cross hairs are kept spot on. So little to no movement.
      As stated..my Bulls Bag is heavy heavy!! Hardest part is carrying to bench then back to vehicle. But aye God! Unreal performance!!

      Not really that rare. Totally depends on the specific situation. In the event of a poor hit or a miss( which does happen) I know of numerous people who were able to quickly chamber another round and put the animal down. In fact, as a hunter, you SHOULD be capable of doing so if necessary.

      @@lancekrystoff9619 Not rare for some people I guess. I have taken over a hundred deer in hunting situations and I can remember having to follow up twice and that was just to be sure. If you are hunting out west where you can see a long ways you may get more opportunities. Around here if you don’t get him witjh one, he is likely a lost deer.

      @@seanwillis1822You’re correct. It varies. I grew up in Northcentral PA but moved out to Wyoming a few years back. I’m young. I’ve killed right around 30 deer. Some of them were shot running. Some of them were shot twice. Virtually never shoot a doe that wasn’t a broadside standing shot. Mature bucks don’t give you that luxury. Hunted with a 7mm Rem Mag when buck tag wasn’t filled. Always tried to keep ethics in mind, but when a big buck runs out across the field at 200 yards, you took the shot you could get. With the 7 mag, if it didn’t drop it dead, it would almost always slow or knock them down. I’m a pretty proficient shooter and know my limitations.
      Dad has shot over 100 deer. Many of those were shot on the run as a “pusher” on drives. Dad was known to be a crack shot. Most of the time if he shot twice it meant two dead deer. Not always though.
      Many people are not really proficient enough to take running shots. That’s why knowing an individual’s equipment and personal limits is imperative.

    These are not budget rifles, and the scope is not added to the price, and all rifles should have been properly sighted in and then compared, and one with a heavy barrel and velocities are slow, the Browning AB3 was not included here, so for instance the AB3 with one spring installed takes care of the trigger, plus a simple bedding still falls way under the prices you have here and the groups fall under 1 inch so to me it's a failure, this is just me it should be set up as if you were to go hunting, not that it matters but I have been doing this sort of thing for all of 40 + years so when I see things of this nature irritates me but I won't try to degrade anyone for trying to do this comparison because it gives people some good aspects and it is not cheap and it takes alot of time to produce and again its just me I can't speak for anyone else, I call it the way I see it.
    Aim small, good hunting, GOD bless.

    Savage has always had the floating bolt head…a very economical and great bolt design which has proven itself for decades x.
    That medium weight barrel on the Savage…no one in their right mind would walk up and down gullies/hills/mountains of the western states. And it’s not a fair comparison on accuracy using heavier weight barrels compared to sported weight. Come on Ron.
    The very first thing to do with budget rifles is to go visit Boyd’s Stocks and spend another $180.00 shipping included…buy a laminate stock and throw the Tupperware stock away.
    I have a goody number of Savage rifles with Savage being the bulk of my rifles. I didn’t have to spend money having a gunsmith perform sny of my upgrades FYI. And all my Savages shoot really well with some being downright impressive…all factory barrels.
    I’m just pointing out where someone will be misled here…did you check to see if the scope/scope mounts/rings were aligned with the actions? Because I’m telling you, my long history with Savage/Stevens actions has taught me that Savage actions are not square. There’s warpage that will put stress on that scope. It will affect shot to shot accuracy. I’d bet that all those actions are not perfectly square which will require scope ring lapping at least. Maybe even shimming the mounts.
    Budget rifles can out perform some custom rifles if the proper steps are taken to allow budget rifle acting’s/barrels to shoot very well. First and foremost ..ditch the Tupperware stocks and epoxy bed the actions to a good laminate stock. And buy quality mounts and rings with at least a respectable quality scope with hunting rifles needing just a basic no frills optic. We’re talking a walk about rifle in real hunting conditions.
    I get your point about budget rifles. I really do. I’ve just seen so many inaccurate budget rifles that really were accurate. Just needing some hood ol’ fashion TLC.

    FYI, the CZ 600 American retails around 750-800, much less than the MSRP quoted. I have one in 30-06 and I love it. You can leave magazine in locked position and load it like a blind mag from the top. I don’t think there is another rifle in that price point that looks so good or ticks so many boxes.

      The 600 Alpha is even less, around $590, I have a Lux, Alpha and a Range. They all shoot under 1 moa at 100 yards. The Range (6mm creedmoor) , shoots 5 shots under 1/2 moa, CZ's Guarantee claim, is it will shoot 5 shots under 3/4 MOA at 100 m with match ammo., I was using federal match . I think they had the MSRP of the Range, it's more of a bench gun.
      I was a little frustrated when they couldn't figure out the safety, especially when Ron said, "we got to take the stock off and fix it"; I'm glad they figured it out.

    The clear winner, HOWA 1500. It's lightweight, shoots under moa/.25 inches with 150 or heavy 180 grain. It has every feature that made the Winchester pre 64' great, and added an adjustable trigger. Not so long ago You could pick up a barreled action between $400 and $500. I don't own a Mossberg but seeing the comments on here most say pass on them. The CZ at $1300 is not budget friendly imo, and the groups were disappointing to say the least. Thank you Ron, to test the HOWA 1500. 😊

    I have a Savage model 110-E that my dad bought for me in 1985. Heavy trigger but consistent. Heavy rifle too. My brother had a beautiful Ruger model 77. Both chambered in 30-06. I always had better groups than my brother. We had some fun competitions. We deer hunted in the mountains of WV. I was young so the weight of that 110 never bothered me. Great old rifle that still shoots amazingly well. Sadly, my brother passed away 1.5 years ago. Enjoy your time while you have it fellas, you never know when things will change! Make those memories!!

    Howa 1500 for me. Solid machined receiver with integrated recoil lug, excellent two stage trigger, three position safety, one piece bolt with sako style claw extractor. Upgrade the stock with whatever you want and be happy. It's a real quality rifle. Buy it from Weatherby if you want a nice stock out of the box.

    On cooling the barrel, they make battery powered fans that you insert into the rifle action. These blow air into the chamber, through the barrel and out the muzzle.
