    Who is Ron Spomer
    For 44 years I’ve had the good fortune to photograph and write about my passion - the outdoor life. Wild creatures and wild places have always stirred me - from the first flushing pheasant that frightened me out of my socks in grandpa’s cornfield to the last whitetail that dismissed me with a wag of its tail. In my attempts to connect with this natural wonder, to become an integral part of our ecosystem and capture a bit of its mystery, I’ve photographed, hiked, hunted, birded, and fished across much of this planet. I've seen the beauty that everyone should see, survived adventures that everyone should experience. I may not have climbed the highest mountains, canoed the wildest rivers, caught the largest fish or shot the biggest bucks, but I’ve tried. Perhaps you have, too. And that’s the essential thing. Being out there, an active participant in our outdoor world.

      Yes, your absolutely right. But What most people don't Say Is it needs to be a heavy Grain, like a Remington Core-Lokt 30-06 Springfield 220 gr Core-Lokt Soft Round or 200 Grain. Ideally Minimum of of 180 gr. It’s Amazes How many Outdoorsmen don’t Know that or even Think about that. Almost Everbody inherits a 30-06, Has a close relative with a 30-06, or can go to the local gun store and Find an Affordable 30-06 at the local gun store.
      The most accurate affordable mid price 30-06 rifles are by far made by Ruger.
      Now Yes, 44 Mag min is Ideal!
      If all you haveis a 357 mag 180 grain hard cast bullets minimum should be used. HSM makes Bear Load. Double Tap makes 200 grain hard cast bullets as well.
      If You want use a Glock or Semi Handgun 10mm Hard Cast 200-220 grain but at least 200 Hard Cast Minimum Should be used. HSM and Underwood make those types of bullets as well as Double Tap.
      If all you have is a 45 ACP 250-255 Grain +P bullets should be used minimum. Underwood makes affordable rounds that fit that description.

    You guys should know better than to compare energy numbers between the 7mm-08 and 44 mag. They use different mechanisms to cause damage so its irrelevant to say the 7mm-08 has 3x the energy. That same 7mm-08 has 50% more energy than a 12 gauge shotgun slug, but which one would you choose for bear defense? If you look at momentum instead of energy you'll see that a 44 mag and 7mm-08 are quite similar in performance, with the 12 gauge beating both of them by 1.5x.

    I never get sick of this discussion.
    My two rifle battery (JVB’s idea from his podcast) would be an 18” 33 Nosler bolt action (controlled round feed Defiance Ruckus Ultralight action) for the big stuff and an 18” 6.5 Creedmoor AR-10 (forged magnesium ROAM receiver) for everything else. They’re near external ballistic twins out to 675 yards (within 2 inches of bullet drop and drift) when using Badlands Precision Bulldozer 2’s at 225gr and 135gr respectively. This monometal hunting projectile will still be going 1900fps at this range and per Badland Precisions tests will still expand.

    Just ordered the rifle that will likely be my go to when I actually decide to apply for tags. Winchester XPR .338 Win Mag, I wouldn’t be afraid to go smaller, I mean maybe woods carry is a 9mm, but I think that Win Mag is just going to hit that sweet spot. At close range you won’t kill it too dead, and it’s still going to punch very hard at range. Caveat I’ll add us that if you’re not a reloader it’s not that cheap to shoot, not the worst but many are cheaper. For defense while hunting other species it’s also just fine, a little big but not going to destroy deer.

    My grandma filled her elk take every year since I was born in 1955 with a Savage M99 in 243. Her notion was "If you have to shoot elk from 500 yards, you're a fine marksman but you ain't much of a hunter". Grandpa would roll his eyes, point a thumb at her an say. "She just says that cuz she's the snealiest woman on Earth.

    • @strat1080
      @strat1080 4 месяца назад

      I see stuff like this posted all the time. Well, it’s not 1955 anymore. Elk and Mule deer hunting is harder than it was back then. There is a lot of hunting pressure and strict hunt ing regulations now. I used to hunt Elk on public land in Colorado. You’re lucky if you saw an Elk all week, and even luckier if you could get within 450 yards of one on public land.
      The average success rate for Elk for an unguided hunter on public land is well under 20%. Don’t use cartridges that severely limit your ability to harvest an Elk in the conditions you expect to find them. Prepare and be ready to take shots past 300 yards.

      I was a guide up here in Montana for 30 years up until a couple years ago. I hunted my own elk with my first hunt in 1968. All on public land. Unguided success rates up here are around 10%. Guided hunts are at around 70%. I'm our camp just about every hunter had a shot. The number one cause was flinching. Second was unfamiliarity with the weapon beyond 100 yards. I'll take a sneaky skillful patient hunter over the latest Earschplitten Loutenboomer every time

    A few years ago, there was some possibility i would be moving to AK. Hoped i would get into hunting up there, at least somewhat. Figured i would get a 45-70 down here, and maybe a DA 44 mag, before going. Would wait to get a 10 mm (wanted one anyway) until after moving, because there are more choices up there (don't get me started on the Kalifornia "safety roster" for handguns). The plan was caribou, any sort of deer, and maybe moose. Wasn't concerned about a bear-specific rifle, if i even decided to hunt bears. Every pawn shop had 300 and 338 WM rifles, probably pawned or sold off by north slope oil workers. Lots of used guns in the gun shops too. Anyway, the relationship didn't work out and i am never going to move up there. Who knows, maybe i will go hunt the peninsula someday still.
    Good points as always, gents. Always thought provoking. My other thought for AK was to get an AR 10 with a second upper in 338 Federal.

    I live in NC and know a lot of bear hunters. We have the largest black bear in the world in the eastern part of the state. They kill 5 and 600 lb bears every year. Our record is 880 lbs. they all hunt with 45/70 444 or 44 mag. They have shot them with high powered rifles and lost them before. And even been attacked when going in a thicket to dispatch a wounded bear. It wasn’t pretty, especially when u have to saw down trees to Medevac a man out of the swamps after a large bear attack. The 600 pound bear bit this guy on the thigh and was jerking him around like a rag doll. But they use big bore on these bear. They hunt with dogs and have lost 5 or 6 in one race with a bear. Even the bulldogs. So large males 6 to 800 lbs are a different animal.

I would be scared of shooting it due to thinking it will recoil hard. I would shut my eyes when I pull the trigger. Now I stopped doing it and now i realize how not hard recoil the gun is

    The 338 RPM "without a belted case." Music to my ears. My only belted case magnum was the 338 Winchester. A nice round that deserves all the accolades that it gets, but it has that cursed belt that shorten case life (yes, even partially resized or resized to fit the shoulder) and provides no benefit in a modern, sharp shouldered case.
    Were I to have just one close range rifle for bear, and I could not have a .375 H&H (OK, a belt, but one that has a purpose) I would have my dream rifle, the Marlin in 45-70.

    • @jayheslin803
      @jayheslin803 5 месяцев назад

      But in my experience with both the .338 and the .375 H&H, the .338 cases stretch less and generally last a few reloads more. The belt thing is just an aesthetic or mental hang up. In a .338, it really doesn't detract from the round. My experience has been chamber dimensions and proper sizing can and do effect case life. YMMV, just my personal experience. Besides, I don't use cases that have been reloaded several times to hunt with. ESPECIALLY when dangerous game is involved. Use fresh cases or factory fodder, and no worries about cases failing. Target shooting NP. Then again, I don't target shoot with any of my .338s or .375s. However, the important things is that you feel comfortable with your choice. If the belt make you uncomfortable the RPM or .338-06 are better choices for you. I just never understood why some folks are so put off by the belt. Likewise the .338 Win. Has a 25° shoulder angle which is a nice compromise and it feeds great, too. Granted the H&H is even slicker.

    Ron, is the old Taylor knockdown metric worth its weight to go by when choosing a caliber for dangerous game?

    • @RonSpomerOutdoors
      @RonSpomerOutdoors  5 месяцев назад +2

      It can't hurt, but one must recognize that Mr. Taylor formulated that based on the stunning effect of various cartridges/bullets applied to head-shot elephants. A bullet of any size and speed that strikes near the brain without penetrating it may or may not knock out the elephant for a few seconds to many minutes. Any bullet, regardless its size and speed, that reached the brain would kill the elephant. Converting this to body hits on anything is problematic at best, as my 50+ years of big game shooting experiences have proven to me. Nevertheless, wider and heavier and faster all add up to more tissue damage, and that always helps.

He contended that a fast 10 rounds of 338 cal partitions is more than any grizzly could argue with. And the 20 round mag made him feel good following up a wounded bear in thick stuff. I think he was right about all of it.

      True that but the rifle isn't good for long range. Is only good to about 300 yards then the drop and loss of energy is huge. That's where the 338 win mag is good. It's slightly less powerful than 375 H&H but not much less powerful. Like marginally. But can shoot out to 800 yards easily.

    Everyone has an opinion. Some of them have experienced-based opinions.
    Among those with actual experience, there are still a variety of caliber preferences because several different calibers ARE effective. So we can go with the latest high-tech, super-duper bullet design pushed by this or that powder charge. Or we can choose one of several trusted old calibers which have proven themselves in capable hands for generations. Some of those would be 45/70, 30-06, 300 or 338 mag, or 375 H&H. ALL of them have been demonstrated to be reliable bear calibers. Yes, some smaller calibers have worked. And certainly the elephant gun calibers do work, but are not as comfortable to shoot as lesser calibers. I'm not an African PH or an Alaskan guide. But I have had success with all of my listed calibers except the 300 win mag. And I know of many others directly or through reputation who have been successful with at least one of those calibers.
    My point?
    Go with what is known to have worked and whose ammo is generally available in many place at most times.
    Understanding that there are several other newer calibers which would certainly be effective, I will stick with what I have and know to be effective, with no rational need to buy something different.

    Hi Ron. That 45-70 cartridge you have there with the black tip bullet, is that powder coated?
    And if so, are powder coated bullets safe to hunt with or are they only for target shooting?
    I ask because, in a hunting situation I am wondering if the powder coat will fracture on impact and flake off in the meat. I have no experience with powder coating.

    • @RonSpomerOutdoors
      @RonSpomerOutdoors  5 месяцев назад +2

      I do not recall where I got that 45-70 black bullet load nor what the coating is. Bullets have been coated with various substances over the years and none were banned for hunting use. Winchester has long used black Lubalox which mainly protected bullets against tarnishing. Barnes had blue coated bullets, the blue material a protective film used in the auto racing industry to protect metal beneath. (Barnes idea was to reduce friction and copper fouling of barrels.) That said, native peoples in several locations had learned to apply organic poisons to darts and arrow tips that proved plenty deadly. Plastic and polymer tipped bullets leave fragments of those materials in game meat. Lead itself has been shown to consistently smear and break into tiny bits and pieces, some of which have been found via X-rays as far as 18 inches from the main wound channel. So you are wise to consider the effects of bullet coatings and materials.
