    Who is Ron Spomer
For 44 years I’ve had the good fortune to photograph and write about my passion - the outdoor life. Wild creatures and wild places have always stirred me - from the first flushing pheasant that frightened me out of my socks in grandpa’s cornfield to the last whitetail that dismissed me with a wag of its tail. In my attempts to connect with this natural wonder, to become an integral part of our ecosystem and capture a bit of its mystery, I’ve photographed, hiked, hunted, birded, and fished across much of this planet. I've seen the beauty that everyone should see, survived adventures that everyone should experience. I may not have climbed the highest mountains, canoed the wildest rivers, caught the largest fish or shot the biggest bucks, but I’ve tried. Perhaps you have, too. And that’s the essential thing. Being out there, an active participant in our outdoor world.

      I took my
270 to Africa after the warthog and Impala. I brought my .338 for kudu and backup for my friend who was determined to get a cape buffalo with his .416 Remington. Little did I know that a trophy kudu would pop up when I was lightly armed with my Remington
270 and lowly 130 gr nosler partitions. Well I'll tell you what, at 110 yards that lowly .270 with the lightweight 130 nosler partition bullet went through both lungs, the heart and then the liver as it finally came to a halt in the off side hide. I dug it out with my 2 inch pocket knife 🔪. Everyone was pretty impressed. Many big game hunts later (30 yrs) my trusted. .270 Remington never left my side. .338, what's that?

Exactly. New and better equipment does not make old equipment any worse. Yes, some advancements can make older equipment obsolete because it’s not used. However, I still hunt with a Flintlock. Carbon composite stocks are more weather resistant than Woodstocks. I would much rather have a Woodstock on my hunting rifle. Better does not mean necessary.

My brother in law had cancer and didn’t make it unfortunately. He had a savage 110 in 270 that I really just loved. It wasn’t anything fancy only thing he did to it was had a new recoil pad on it and a nice leather ammo cuff. The gun just was so accurate I couldn’t believe it. I think he bought it at the pawn shop years ago. When he passed my sister told me he wanted me to continue to hunt with his rifle and eventually teach his son the joys of the great outdoors. This fall will be my first season using it and I’ll have my nephew with me as well! Wish us luck! The 270 isn’t going anywhere because it’s just a great super versatile round.

I have 2 rifles in the 270 win with 2 other 270 win in the shop being built from old mauser actions. I collect rifles and the 270 is one of my favorite as it was Jack O’Conner favorite too but my favorite is the 30-06 followed by the 300 wsm. 60+ years of collecting reloading and hunting and a man can never have to many rifles, those 8 rifles in the shop being built and having about every cartridge in my collection at one time or another! What made the 270 is when the scopes came out and made the 270’s extra reach available and that’s when Jack really started liking it because the 270 came out in 1925 and didn’t even make much of a splash until the Redfield snd Leupold scopes came on the scene!

I shall always own a .270Win. My first was a Tikka LSA65, and shot from 130gr to 165gr really well. My second (current) is a Howa 1500, and it shoots 140gr to 165gr very well. It is finicky with 130gr loads. I am on my last box of old 165gr Sako Hammerheads, and have developed a new “permanent” load with the 140gr Viper mono-metal bullet, called the Plains Supreme.
I’ve shot from as small as Rock Hyrax to as large as Giraffe with .270Win.

I have been enjoying your channel for a couple years now, but this is the first one I felt inclined to comment on.
At the age of 12, I purchased my first rifle, a Rem 700 in 243 Win., a great cartridge for California. That would have been 1970. Right after my 18th birthday, my grandfather gave me his shotgun and rifle, a browning A5, and a browning semi auto in 270 win. It had a carbine length barrel and the serial number said it was made in 1959.
I hunted many years with it,a great rifle for everything that California could throw at it.
I shot it at the range out to 500, but my longest hunting shot was a little over 200. Performed perfectly.
Your channel always seems to bring back memories.
Thank you for all the great info.

I have applied many times for an out of state tag for moose in Maine. I was lucky enough to draw it twice. I loved hearing Mainers talk about hunting in the big woods for these incredible creatures when I hunted in Maine. The old timers hang in there with the classic cartridges - mostly 30-06. There were two old timers that spoke about the virtues of the 160 grain Nosler Partition in their 270’s. They have both taken moose as hunters and helped other hunters anchor their moose when they were guides. Know your firearm, practice, and match your projectile with the game - the 270 Winchester will not disappoint. One of the greatest American classics…. If you fancy the newest & greatest, that’s one thing - if you love the history & heritage of hunting, there is no better. Thank’s Jack.

Just a note for those of us at higher altitude. You can stabilize heavier, longer bullets.
Reloading Weatherby has several videos detailing how the longer bullets, such as the 165 ABLR, are able to be stabalized in a 1:10 twist barrels.
Faster twist is better across all conditions. But if you're a reloader at higher altitude, you can do some experiments for your old 270.
The older cartridges are not obsolete even at longer ranges. They just need an update and they can equal or even outdo the new stuff.

It doesn't matter at reasonable hunting ranges, and if you have to worry about it, perhaps you should spend less time worrying about this idiocy and focus on improving your hunting skills so you don't have to take unethical shots. I put a 4 power Weaver scope on it and sighted it in 3" high at 100yds. I killed many whitetail deer with it some at over 300 yards. I decided I had to have a .270 Win with a 24" barrel so I bought a new Sako Finbear .270 in 1972 (made in 1969) and sold the Rem 700 for $100 (I still wish I had kept it). Thanks, as always, for your content, Ron! I’m a hunter in Switzerland and just got a .270 for hunting ibex and chamois in the Alps … as well as red deer, roe and wild boar! The issue here is that hunters must use a minimum caliber of 7mm. Hence a 6.5 is off the table. Nevertheless, your videos convinced me the 6.5 doesn’t have significant advantages over the .270. Moreover, hunters here are also required to take their shots within 250 meters.

I've had a lot of success with the 270 win using monolythic bullets in far northern Alberta. The longest shot I've taken was 264 yards. There really aren't any close shots here. I have yet to find fault with it. You may know that our animals are on the very large size. It's never failed to seal the deal quick and ethically.

I was taught to understand the capability, flatness and range of a .270 as a young man. I’m still a young man and have educated others about how classic it truly is. Let’s face it, realistic hunting is between 50m-300m but you’re well covered to much higher which is why it shines.
I convinced 5 people I know to buy a .270 and none have regretted it. Keeping that amazing caliber alive and in demand for years to come.
    For reference I use a
    weatheby vanguard s2
    Stainless steel 24” barrel
    HS-precision stock
    Vixen 4-16x44 scope
I can achieve sub moa 3 shot groups at 100m with at least 5 common, easy to get off the shelf factory loads.

Good presentation guys! If/when I am heading out with .270 WIN here in Alaska... my factory loading all-rounder selection is running Barnes Vor-TX 130 gr. TTSX. I have to think about bigger critters deer hunting the coastal mountains on the way back down - lol. The .270 WIN in particular I have held onto is BSA Majestic Featherweight. Barrel is short and compact to begin with, and before I obtained it somebody cut the BESA recoil reducer off. Barrel is stamped specifically 130 grain bullets to be used, and that in fact is what it likes. Fun little ol' classic claw extractor control round feed light rifle (like maybe 6ish lbs. at most)... and many folks have asked to take her off my hands over the years. Not sure what it would be worth nowadays???

I’m looking at purchasing a 6.8 Western rifle Winchester model 70 featherweight compact (22” barrel )
I’m never going to shoot past 400 yards … maybe 500 pushing my personal limits .
Do you think that 6.8 cartridge is efficient enough to keep decent velocities and still perform well enough from that 22” barrel ?
It’s a very nice rifle , compact and practical, well balanced with the short barrel ,quick to shoulder and easy to carry in the field . I mean I have carried 26” barrel rifles ( 300 WM & 7mm REM Mag ) and it’s not enjoyable especially in mountainous terrain. Even 24” barrels can be a hindrance when you’re hoofing around with all your gear .
But I don’t want to make a big mistake buying it if it will suffer in performance too drastically. Most rifles in 6.8 are typically 24” from what I’m seeing, so only 2” less in barrel length .
Thanks Ron , I always appreciate your expertise on the subject matter.

    • @RonSpomerOutdoors
      @RonSpomerOutdoors  6 месяцев назад +1

In 22" it will be perfectly deadly. Of course you'll give up a smidge of performance, but you give up similar when using "just" a 24" instead of 26" or 28". It's a compromise.

The loading information was in the Rock Crusher Press reloading on the last page. Work up carefully. Funny thing is you can't fit a single grain more powder perfect. I would highly recommend a Remington 700 of similarly construction and strength. So nothing new under the Sun 🌞

Competition shooters need to stay ahead of the competition but most hunters have no need for anything new. Here in Northern Minnesota most all hunters shots are under 100 yds. The first big game rifle I owned was a 30-30 win when i turned 18. But 2 years later i bought a Savage model 110 in 270. It wasn't a fancy rifle, pretty basic, but it would shoot most ammo at 1 moa at 100yrds. Over the next 30 years it pretty much just sat around, because living in Illinois, the only thing to hunt are coyotes, raccoons, ground hogs, opossum, squirrels, pheasants, quail, and deer. The last three, i had to use a shotgun for. Over those 30 years I've owned 204's, 223's, and a 6.5 Creedmoor. So i eventually just sold the 270 along with a few other rifles. The only rifles i use anymore these days are a couple 22 mag's, a 22 & 17 Hornet. The 17 Hornet is a 1/4" moa rifle, very accurate. About 5 years ago my wife bought me a Win XPR in 30-06 for Christmas. But like the old 270, i have hardly shot it. If i ever hunt out west after i retire, i might just buy another 270. But if the grizzlies keep spreading south throughout the rockies like I've heard, i may just use my Christmas 30-06 with 180gr Partition bullets instead of another 270.

My father was a huge Jack O'Connor fan and a huge fan of the 270win. He'd agree with you. I asked him what caliber he'd take if he could only have one gun. A 30-06. I was surprised. He said it will kill anything in North America including polar bears and I can load my own ammo up cheaply for whatever I'm hunting with many options and if person doesn't reload? There are many great options on the shelf.

Yes my hunting buddy uses his 30-06, and he's too lazy to reload, though he has the equipment. The reason for this is because of the huge variety of loads that are available for the rifle. He claims there's more for the 30 ought 6 than any other, but I'm not sure of that.

Ron and Joseph, sorry about this comment. The biggest problem for hunters and shooters, is shooting and hunting 'journalists'! They get a lot of pressure from the companies that buy their wares (articles). To make a living, they have to produce large volumes of that product, and controversy really gets readers/viewers to buy. I guess that I'm approximately Ron's age, and have always been a big consumer of said journalism. I probably read Ron's first article in a major publication. Still consuming his product and enjoying doing so! There is no way, that I could put a number to how many .270 vs 30-06 articles I have read. Loved both Jack O'Connor and Elmer Keith, but was more inclined to Keith's philosophy of giving more wiggle room for a cartridge to complete the task. However both men were very bought off. They were not born into super rich families, but got to hunt worldwide as if they did. Somebody paid for all that, and it wasn't only their publishers that supported all of it. They weren't alone then or now. Keith admitted to a lot of his shots missing the mark, on or just off his animals. O'Connor, it is said by many, was not as honest. Props to Joseph and Ron for being apparently honest in pointing out Joseph's misses at long range. He is much more experienced at hunting and shooting than average, or even above average hunters. Using a rifle, scope combo that he is very experienced with. At known distance, and no time crunch that is typical in hunting. Last day of hunting, with the sun below the horizon for example. And he didn't just climb a long incline at high altitude. Under those conditions, most of us, couldn't hit the 400 yd jug with a full magazine. Many couldn't hit the one at 300, and too many would miss at 200 and even 100, with their choice of cartridge and rifle. But everyone got worked into a lather over long range hunting, thanks to our media. And the industry responded. Good for the gun and ammo companies, and good for the 'journalists'! I hope you all get rich, I really do. I also hope that hunters get a reality check, practice more, hunt closer, and then closer yet, and keep their ethics close to their hearts and minds while doing so. Take your 7mm STW with heavy, double throwdown BC bullets. Just in case you wound one and have to stop it out yonder, before it gets away.
