      I took my
270 to Africa after the warthog and Impala. I brought my .338 for kudu and backup for my friend who was determined to get a cape buffalo with his .416 Remington. Little did I know that a trophy kudu would pop up when I was lightly armed with my Remington
270 and lowly 130 gr nosler partitions. Well I'll tell you what, at 110 yards that lowly .270 with the lightweight 130 nosler partition bullet went through both lungs, the heart and then the liver as it finally came to a halt in the off side hide. I dug it out with my 2 inch pocket knife 🔪. Everyone was pretty impressed. Many big game hunts later (30 yrs) my trusted. .270 Remington never left my side. .338, what's that?

Carbon composite stocks are more weather resistant than Woodstocks. I would much rather have a Woodstock on my hunting rifle. Better does not mean necessary.

It wasn’t anything fancy only thing he did to it was had a new recoil pad on it and a nice leather ammo cuff. The gun just was so accurate I couldn’t believe it. I think he bought it at the pawn shop years ago. When he passed my sister told me he wanted me to continue to hunt with his rifle and eventually teach his son the joys of the great outdoors. I would say that the 30-06 is even better than it was int he past. First we have traditional bonded bullets, partitions, A-Frames and the like. On top of that solid coper bullets have gotten so good that you realisticly shoot 130gr. to 168gr. and use the added velocity to your advantage. Generaly traditionaly for the last 30 years I have been very much against 150gr. bullets in 30-06 and 300WM but with the advant of such fantastic solid copper bullets the case can be made especially int he 30-06 for the use of lighter bullets with out giving up anything! The 30-06 can sling a 130gr. solid copper bullet well over 3000fps.

I collect rifles and the 270 is one of my favorite as it was Jack O’Conner favorite too but my favorite is the 30-06 followed by the 300 wsm. 60+ years of collecting reloading and hunting and a man can never have to many rifles, those 8 rifles in the shop being built and having about every cartridge in my collection at one time or another! What made the 270 is when the scopes came out and made the 270’s extra reach available and that’s when Jack really started liking it because the 270 came out in 1925 and didn’t even make much of a splash until the Redfield snd Leupold scopes came on the scene!

I reload for them all and have 100% confidence in all 3 calibers to do anything I need from varmint to all medium and big game on our continent (not that iv hunted grizz/brown bear) but we all know a 300win has done it. Now my age (37 years young) but my passion for “classic” calibers keeps me content with the tried and true offerings. Also with that age comes my insight into new and “improved” offerings. If I was to revamp my 3 main rifles I would honestly say the 6mm creedmore in place of 243win, 6.5prc in place of 270win, and 300prc in place of 300win mag. I’m set in my original choices but those 3 new cartridge designs would be my modern choices for all. All imho of course. Cheers from a Canadian hunter and shooter 🍻🇨🇦👍🏻

There are some other ancient cartridges i enjoy as well such as the 300 Weatherby, the 308, the 7mm Remington, and the 45-70 but the 270 is an all around great choice for many game animals

I think everyone misses the point of the 270 Win. you can carry an ultra-light rifle with a 22 inch barrel, get 3268 Fps. out of a 130 grain bullet, have the recoil, just at or just under the 30-06, and can kill anything on earth minus dangerous game. if you get a custom break down rifle, with two barrels, you get 2930 Fps. out of the Berger 170 grain bullet. Which is right at the 6.8 Western performance so why would I get anything else??? Now I am older now, and with the under performing ammo out there I would stop at Elk, and below for the 270 Win. Great Show.

What powder, brass, and bullet are you using to get 3200+ out of shorter barrels? R-26 is by far the fastest powder I've found for the heavier bullets, and R-16 does seem to get near 3200, but in my experience, using the highest-capacity brass, trying to get to 3200 with a few different bullets got me ejector marks in a couple different guns.

    • @bobkat1663
      @bobkat1663 4 месяца назад

R-26 for me is by far the best powder I have used in a 270 Win. Brass, Alpha Munitions, Norma, Lapua, but those will cost you. Honestly, you want a 270 Win. with a 26 - 30 inch barrel, in such a case you can get higher fps. or can get the same fps. as a shorter barrel but will longer burning, and less powder, which equals to longer barrel life and less recoil and recoil vel. Sadly everyone makes a 22 or 24 inch barrel. Over the years I have noticed for longer shots, a 1/9 twist barrel is ideal for the 270 Win. I think Browning is offering 270 Win. with such a twist rate now. What I would do is get some Hornady Superformance ammo in 270 Win. , and find out what out what you get in your rifle, that will give you a bench mark for what kind of fps. you can get from your rifle.

I have applied many times for an out of state tag for moose in Maine. I was lucky enough to draw it twice. I loved hearing Mainers talk about hunting in the big woods for these incredible creatures when I hunted in Maine. The old timers hang in there with the classic cartridges - mostly 30-06. There were two old timers that spoke about the virtues of the 160 grain Nosler Partition in their 270’s. They have both taken moose as hunters and helped other hunters anchor their moose when they were guides. Know your firearm, practice, and match your projectile with the game - the 270 Winchester will not disappoint. One of the greatest American classics…. If you fancy the newest & greatest, that’s one thing - if you love the history & heritage of hunting, there is no better. Thank’s Jack.

I have been enjoying your channel for a couple years now, but this is the first one I felt inclined to comment on.
At the age of 12, I purchased my first rifle, a Rem 700 in 243 Win., a great cartridge for California. That would have been 1970. Right after my 18th birthday, my grandfather gave me his shotgun and rifle, a browning A5, and a browning semi auto in 270 win. It had a carbine length barrel and the serial number said it was made in 1959.
I hunted many years with it,a great rifle for everything that California could throw at it.
I shot it at the range out to 500, but my longest hunting shot was a little over 200. Performed perfectly.
Your channel always seems to bring back memories.

My dad had a .270 custom built in the early 90’s which he gave to me as my high school graduation gift. It’s a work of art. It’s got a walnut stock with a right handed cheek rest with a thumb hole, it has a marathon barrel with the original grouping page from when it was tested in Spain and a Mauser action bolt. That rifle has taken whitetail and mule deer in Texas and Colorado and to the best of his knowledge and my experience has lost only 1 animal, a wild hog in north Texas that a managed to survive a headshot, according to my dad. He’s always told me the same thing. “With good shot placement inside 400 yards you should never lose an animal with this rifle.” I know there are a ton of new rounds that can incredible things at 6,7 and 800 yards. But I really do believe that for whitetail, Mule deer, pronghorn, and elk, not to mention the many similarly sized exotics we have in the US now; the .270 is a top 5 cartridge choice when considering price, ammo availability, and functionality. It’s withstood the test of time and is still a phenomenal round.

IMO 270 is a PERFECT 'all around use' cartridge. Even the 130grs are within 200-300 ftlbs of a 180gr 30-06 at any distance so a deer or antelope will never notice and that 150gr accubond or 145gr eldx from a 270 is basically the same or MORE energy than the 180gr '06 so you are good to go for elk BUT you get a flatter trajectory than the '06.

I grew up with hand me downs from my great grandads, and grandads, big surprise there growing up in a generational hunting family. I first had as a deer rifle which is probably no surprise and am sure many of you will say the samething. It’s was a Winchester Model 1894 .30-.30 manufactured in 1955. It was an anniversary gift from my great grandma to my great grandad. I was the only new gun he ever owned. When I turned 18 he gave his all around big North American game rifle which was an 03 Springfield chamber in .30-06 SPRGF which he bought second or even third hand like most of his other rifles, shotguns, handguns. He always told...son if you take care of this and take your time aim small, miss small this gun will get you anything in America!!! It had done just that for him, deer, mule deer, caribou, elk, moose, bobcats, mountain lion, black bear, grizzly, kodiak, antelope, wild hog, along with countless other sub species. To this day year in and year out these guns bring me great pleasure and joy. My papaw has sinced pass but I’m now the custodian of his entire collection and not get to pass down the heritage and fun to my daughter who just turned 10 along with other nieces and nephews. I also had several granddads who were into guns and was lucky enough to get some of those too. However my dad and my on grandfather are still healthy and able to hunt which is a total bonus for me because I’m still as a 40 year old man Am learning new things from. The Lord has blessed me and my heritage has blessed me as well.

All that and not a single mention of the 270WSM. It's a fantastic cartridge! Compared to a 6.8 Western within reasonable hunting distances (400-500 yards), the WSM with a 140 or 150gr bullet carries more velocity, more kinetic energy, and has a flatter trajectory than the Western. The only advantage a 6.8 Western has is the ability to shoot more aerodynamic bullets, which a shooter doesn't even truly begin to benefit from until you're outside of a reasonable hunting distance. The 270 is a great cartridge. The 270WSM is a better version. The 6.8 Western was designed for the bench, not the woods. It is practically the middle child between the 270 and the WSM ballisticlly when only considering practical hunting distances. Now, having said all of that, I love the channel and all the content! Thank you, and hunt honest and shoot straight!

They hunted and killed numerous elk with a 257 Roberts and a 270 Winchester (both Pre 64 Model 70s). Currently, my cartridge of choice is the 7mm PRC so I am not saying there is no reason to carry anything larger than the 270, but no matter how much we would like to get around it there is no substitute for practice and precision shot placement.

Just a note for those of us at higher altitude. You can stabilize heavier, longer bullets.
Reloading Weatherby has several videos detailing how the longer bullets, such as the 165 ABLR, are able to be stabalized in a 1:10 twist barrels.
Faster twist is better across all conditions. But if you're a reloader at higher altitude, you can do some experiments for your old 270.
The older cartridges are not obsolete even at longer ranges. They just need an update and they can equal or even outdo the new stuff.

The issue here is that hunters must use a minimum caliber of 7mm. Hence a 6.5 is off the table. Nevertheless, your videos convinced me the 6.5 doesn’t have significant advantages over the .270. Moreover, hunters here are also required to take their shots within 250 meters.

My last rifle purchase was a Benelli Lupo .270. Living on the East Coast I have not had an opportunity to take a shot beyond 200 yards and would not even attempt a shot beyond 300 yards or so. I know my limits.

I've never heard anyone complain after being shot with a .270. That should put this inane discussion to rest.
