    The Suez disaster started the decline in deference in Britain and sparked the satire boom. While the BBC had to uphold the establishment of which it became a key part during the war, ITV just happened to be starting at about the same time (depending on the region) and wasn't the establishment.
    The collapse in respect, especially for politicians, was self-inflicted.
