  • Journalist, satirist and broadcaster, Ian Hislop, joins Rob to talk about his new comedy Spike, currently at The Watermill Theatre until Saturday 5th March. They discuss Have I Got News For You, which Ian has been Team Captain on since it first aired over 30 years ago, and Ian tells Rob about first meeting satirist and comedic actor Peter Cook whilst at college: an encounter which eventually led to him becoming the Editor of Private Eye at the tender age of twenty-five.

Ian Hislop is a 'public servant' in the true sense of the phrase. He is more of a public servant than any MP, and deserves far more recognition for his championing of actual real justice. Plus puncturing the puffed up buffoons is always very funny.

Probab;y, all true but I like a suggestion even a glimpse of political impartiality and watching HIGNFY immediately after the last election (literally, it seemed) showed Ian and Paul in their true colours as neither of these multi-millionaires could, barely, utter a word and for their detractors, it provided a real insight into their political leanings....

Ian Hislop is a man, that if I'm honest, I don't think much about. He's been on TV a lot but you don't really notice him...if you know what I mean. Now that I've grown up with him for most of my life I realise just how important he has been. He's been openly critical at the right times and in the right places. His ability to bring a spotlight down on the important issues has been crucially important. He's a bit of a ledge, really. We need more people like him with the balls to speak out, for the sake of free speech and our democracy.

Ian Hislop - out of all the people in the world....... is one my TOP 5 People that I would like to spend an evening with. ( Like Christopher Hitchens )

I was in my sporting, hedonistic and anxious socialising prime when HIGNFY started and I found it to be a little oasis of intelligent conversation and wit. It was kind of tucked away on the auxiliary channel, on Friday nights, in a sort of 'What the Papers Say' slot. I was quite evangelical about it and can honestly cite it as an influential factor in the previously unlikely occasional Friday night in.

Hi Rob, enjoying the channel! There is a small typo in the channel description, 4th paragraph. The word "be" is missing. Cheers

Loved this and could've listened to another 15 minutes (or more) of Rob and Ian chatting. Does make me wonder if there is appetite out there for extended Rob Brydon and Esteemed Guest podcasts; I'd certainly tune in

I remember finding Marion and Geoff... I am sure my jaw was dropped a number of times, and disbelieving laughs, and the sadness of seeing such a nice man so used, so cynically treated. It was extraordinary to discover

"---and he was like: 'You know i've met this thing, he's quite funny, why don't you have a look at him?"

Nowhere near as much fun as watching Hislop and Merton Ion HIGNFY immediately after the last election (literally, it seemed) showed Ian and Paul in their true colours as neither of these multi-millionaires could, barely, utter a word and for their detractors, it provided a real insight into their political leanings....
Back to their respective Ivory Towers well away from the hoi polloi, for them.....
