  • The 2017 Geddes Memorial Lecture features Ian Hislop (Editor of Private Eye) in conversation with Helen Lewis (Deputy Editor of the New Statesman) on 3 March in the Examination Schools at the University of Oxford. Topics for discussion include Ian's time at Oxford and involvement in student journalism, how he became Private Eye editor aged just 26, what makes people cancel their subscriptions, and the opinions most likely to get him into trouble.
The Geddes Lecture is an annual event organised by St Edmund Hall, University of Oxford, and the Philip Geddes Trust, in memory of Philip Geddes, an alumnus of St Edmund Hall and promising young journalist who was killed by an IRA bomb blast in 1983, aged just 24.

Just a quick "thank you" to whoever posted this interview. I'm just a Canadian who enjoys watching HIGNFY on RUclips for the past several years.
I have never seen a copy of "Private Eye" in my life. Always enjoyed Ian's quick wit. I absolutely loved how he treated Conrad Black on the game show. It took real balls and intelligence to stand up to that pompous twat.
I hope Ian lives to a ripe old age.

I liked your comment very much and its lovely to discover that even though you're Canadian and I'm Welsh, we're surprisingly similar in attitudes and outlook.. Even using the same wonderful descriptive terms such as 'Twat!' 😂🤣😂

@@karenhockingkarenhocking9716 I truly appreciate your comments. My wife comes from a mix of Irish and Scottish background and I'm from a French-Canadian heritage. I never truly warmed up to the French (Québec) culture and language much when I was growing up. I was wired for music at birth and all of my musical interests were in all the British Invasion groups of the 60's era and onward.
British humour always tickled my fancy, from the "Carry On" series, to Peter Sellers, Monty Python and so on. There's an intelligent wit behind most of it. Dang it, even Benny Hill was a favourite of mine all through the early days of VHS tape rentals! 😆
I had a buddy who's wife came from Wales. They brought back a towel for me with a map of Wales on it which I have to this day.
It's sad how the media always reinforces the differences between people when I'm sure the vast majority of us have a lot in common. Sharing laughs with other folks is a wonderful thing.
I reserve the use of the word "twat" for the most egregious morons. Trump falls into that category. Lol! 😆 Of course, Ian and Paul have made mincemeat out of plenty of politicians on their show. It's something you would never see in a million years on American or Canadian game shows. Canadians are too polite to do that and Americans always suck up to famous and wealthy contestants.

Ian Hislop in conversation with Helen Lewis 0513am 27.12.23 his insight re: a royal death is quite interesting considering his take on capt bob's demise. the quality of private eye (on a par with the daily star at it's lowest ebb, circulation-wise) is either supposed to be a mirror which is gleefully held aloft to reflect the miserable state of affairs within the british hack world we are supposed to deem professional journalism or a mishmash of misery which describes the fact it doesnt know what the hell it is (which is also probably a reflection of the world of journalism in britian today)... in that it's lost it's focus or the inherent fury which gave it to the world... the coup within the eye.... the coup he briefly he alluded to - this is what i need to know more about...

I only discovered HIGNFY a couple of years ago and on the surface it seemed that Ian and Paul held sort of right/left positions but a few episodes in, when everyone else was having a go at the Labour party, Ian spoke out in their defence.
Not so much in favor of their position but against his co-panelists bullying.

The "picture of the car" bit has a perfect mirror in a very awkward weekend spent with friends of mu wife. We'd driven there in a new (used) car and when they were shocked we hadn't listened to the funeral en route, I fibbed and said we hadn't tuned the radio. So... They said. "It's OK, we taped it while we watched it, so we can all watch it again now".
    Very awkward.... I declined.
The next morning, the wife of rhe couple sent her husband to buy a copy of "every paper in the shop - except the one you usually read".
When delinquent princesses get splodged in drunken car crashes, there is no irony or satire.
