  • In our first episode of Pretty, we take a look at la beauté Française (French beauty). What's considered beautiful in France and is it also what's beautiful in Paris? France considers itself a color blind country but in doing so has it forgotten to include some groups of people in its idea of beauty?
    Pretty is a documentary series exploring different ideas of beauty across the globe. Learn more about Pretty on Un-ruly: un-ruly.com/pre....

    I love this. It's great to see a series looking to open up the discussion of beauty and what it means to black women from different parts of the world in a positive and thoughtful way.

    When you took 3 years of French honors and can only understand "Bon Question" 😫😂 how am I getting a 80% in that class? This is my last year, my senior year I'm not taking French again. I'm fed up.

      Don't give up! I think you might just be having problem with the accent. I bet you if it was written down and you were reading it, you would've understood a lot more. I know what I'm referring to because I am Haitian and went to school in Haiti wherein most of the people speak Creole but in school were taught in French and when I heard an actual french person speak, I couldn't understand a thing. However, if I would hear an African speaking French, I would understand everything. Why? because their accent is closer to ours. Now, I can understand most of the things that a French person say in French because I have now getting used to their accent. Take it like, you speaking American English and you have someone from England or Australia speaking English to you, you would find it a bit difficult to understand some of the words that they say if you are not used to their accent. So, keep looking up for French videos to watch so you can get used to the accent.

      +musiklover2 Very true! I actually do understand it better on paper as I did excellent on my French writing exam> got a 90% (A). My teacher said she was proud of me lol. 😂 so was I.

      Nah, if you go for six months or so you'll shock yourself, it's just like how babies can't talk until they're several months old, but they're absorbing everything all that time. Classes in a non-French speaking country can feel like bullshit when you get out in the real world, but I swear it's all there, you just gotta give it time. If you study abroad, for the first few months it feels so frustrating, like all that time studying was worthless, but it's all sitting there just marinating...and then all the sudden you start getting confidence and it all starts coming out!

      +musiklover2 OMG I'm Haitian too and I have been taught in Haiti how to speak French but now that I live in U.S I kind of lost some of the things that I have been taught in order to adapt to English but I can read and understand a little French just can't speak it fluently, I'm pretty sure that if I were to get lost in Paris I'll be able to found my way with my rusty French LOL.

      You definitely would have, dear. Besides, the French are not waiting for you to make grammatical errors to laugh at you; as long as they are able to understand you, they're good. You would be helped.

    French people still have an issue with Black women. I'd stay 90% of mixed people (black-white) in France come from an union where the father is black. Like the mixed girl in this documentary more than probably has a white mother. Actually I'm always amazed when I see a BlackWomanWhiteMan couple. As for Black women and natural hair, the french society is quite tolerant with it. There's an understanding that black people have kinky hair and that's that, so you'll never find someone in France asking you why you kept you hair natural. I've never seen little girls with relaxed hair either and it's not so prevalent amongst teenagers, compared to the States where it's a huge thing.

      The only time I see mixed kids with black moms in Paris is when the dad is Asian. There seems to be a thing with AMBW couples in Paris

    • @LondonLeopard1
      @LondonLeopard1 3 года назад +7

      I noticed this! Here in England there seems to be something against natural hair. Most girls either relax their hair or wear wigs/weaves. I have decided to go natural after more than 10 years of relaxing, and my fellow black British people dont seem to be positive about it. But I noticed many black women in France, Portugal, and Germany will proudly wear their natural hair.

    Im Parisian and I absoluyely loved this video. I would like to thank the three beautiful girls here who are speaking the truth. Black women are not enough represented but at the same time I feel this issue concerns more the US. In France, for instance natural mixed girls are seen as beautiful. My father is from Guadeloupe, my mom from here and I look like a north african woman , people think that I come from Algeria or something. No offence but I would die to have this mixed skin beauty because it represents eternal beauty
