my parents took me to beale street on my 21st bday. i had to go to bb kings and get my pic taken with srv's guitar there as well. i also went there for my honeymoon yrs later. a tile fell off the wall by the floor when i went to ladies room. i still have that tile lol 😊 didn't get to see bb but still had the best time ever.

I live in Austin, Tx. I was fortunate (AF) to see Stevie live on more than one occasion. I saw his brother in a guitar store sitting and playing. Jimi was his biggest influence. It's fair to say we will never stop missing him 😢...thanks for the reaction..
Being an East Texas boy all of my childhood, SRV, ZZ Top, Willie Nelson, Led Zepplin, Pink Floyd, and Black Sabbath were the music that grew me into the man I am today. SRV has ALWAYS been the music of my heart and soul. If fact, I intend on my one day funeral to be a bit ol' party, with kegs, liquor, and rock & roll. The only audible request I have is for Stevie's "Life By The Drop" to play as my worldly being is given to flame in a lake. I decided on that song a long, long time ago.

He spent his remaining days sober and trying to help other addicts. 2) He was very, very humble. Don't get me wrong, on stage he was going to give you your money's worth, but he was incredibly humble; always quick to talk about his heroes...Albert King, BB King, Buddy Guy, Jimi, etc.. In addition, when he shared the stage with other guitarists he would pull the throttle back as to not disrespect the other gunslingers. 3) He came on the scene in 1983 when hair bands, parachute pants and synthesizers ruled the airwaves. Blues was an afterthought and all the old guys were left playing shithole dives. When Stevie hit it big he started telling everyone about his heroes and they soon began to sell a lot of albums and play bigger venues. This will probably cement his place as your favorite musician of all time.
"This man's hand strength is incredible..." At the time of this recording Stevie was using 13 gauge strings on his guitars (string gauge is described as the thickness of the low E string, the other strings are each a step lighter). The average string gauge on a guitar is 9, maybe 10's if you want to go a bit heavier. 13's are like piano wire, Those bends he does in Voodoo Chile are all the way across the neck of the guitar. So yeah... incredible hand strength.
He actually replaced his frets with bass frets so that they could handle the strings. One time, he played the callous right off of his finger and he super glued it back on to finish the set. He was a monster, in the best possible sense of the word.
Very few guitarists have the otherworldly gift of walking on stage and closing their minds to their surroundings and let the music take over without being consiously aware of what they are playing
No one should ever be that good, Stevie truly was a guitar god. My socks were blown off. First song I ever heard from him way way back in the day was Cold Shot and I was hooked.
I just listened to a remastered version of Tin Pan Alley...I was BLOWN AWAY!!! Stevie does not play a guitar...Stevie SINGS with The Guitar! Stevie and The Guitar are ONE and the same. When you hear The Guitar...you are listening to Stevie sing with his other God given voice! I have listened to a lot of guitar legends in my 55 years...I cannot think of anyone who has left me with my mouth hanging wide open like SRV. AMAZING!
We all have our favorites - as a guitar player for what it is worth - Stevie was the GREATEST. He was the Magic Man. He did things we'll never see again and is really the last holder of the title of Guitar God till we lost him in 1990. Jimi, Jimmy Page, Clapton, Santana, BB King, Robert Johnson, Eddie Van Halen, David Gilmour and so many more are up in the highest echelon - but only really Jimi and Stevie reside together above all. If you watch the "SRV - Voodoo Child - Live form Austin City Limits" you'll see how he plays even his own incredible cover so much differently, but as good or better than this treasure here. But I'd go check out a cool groovy Stevie, showing off more of his skills and just beautiful sounding soul blues music with a rock edge, "Mary Had a Little Lamb" live from Austin or "Crossfire" from that same show would be great directions to head to but they are endless. Welcome my friend - that battered 62 Strat he has he called "Number 1" and it - at least to blues guitar players - may be the most valuable object on the Earth. It sits as it should with older brother Jimmy now in his 70's but still playing. If you want to see a random but so so super cool rarely reacted to clip, check out Stevie and Jimmy playing "Pipeline Live" together. It has a really cool trick to it so is a blast to see but also sounds incredible and is touching showing off the brothers together.
SRV, Hendrix and Jeff Beck ( if you haven't checked Beck out you'll dig him 2) are not human. They all come from a planet where they do nothing but okay guitar. Rock on.
My also being (a not so good) guitar player noticed that most of Stevie's licks were not difficult, but it was the way he played them that really made the difference. I've tried to learn a few of the more difficult licks, utter failure. There are very few guitar players that make me want to put my guitar in the closet, from being embarrassed. Stevie Ray Vaughn is one and Doyle Dykes is the other. Check him out on "Free Bird", mind blowing. ;-)
Wow! One of the best guitarist ever. I love the way the video is a mirror image of his original performance. Makes him look like he's playing lefthanded like Jimi. He was a master at the craft and I feel fortunate to have seen him in concert way back in 87.

I was blessed to have gotten to see him play live, which blew everyone away. The audience was full of guitarists with binoculars just studying his hands. He was one of the greatest guitarists of all time even though his career was cut so short.
He was a great!!!! He sadly died way too soon...he had stopped drugs and booze and he showed the world you could still do this...there was only one Stevie...can you imagine what his music would be today?!?...I have been listening to him for years.. he was the best..

You are right Stevie was a badass guitar player and just to let you know this performance was at Charlie Daniel's benefit with Lynyrd Skynyrd also performing. So Charlie's band and Skynyrds band were on the side of the stage checking out this performance. A awesome experience had by all I'm sure. A great concert to ck. Out is SRV live at Datona Beach. The whole show was incredible.
SRV, greatest by far ! On and off stage he was a good human ! He fought hard to break in to mainstream because he wasn't a cookie cutter . His guitar skills have never been matched.

Every time I watch SRV play a solo like this I find myself falling into a sort of hypnotic state of disbelief. Then when I snap out of it I always ask the same question over and over and over............ can a guitar be played with any more talent, soul and passion than that! TY for reacting.
I noticed that people who are just now hearing SRV for the first time comment on how the audience is just laid back and appear to be bored...I guarantee you we were not bored, we were mesmerized watching him play. Not only that but the sound levels he liked to play at made your body rumble...you could FEEL it.
My favorite part about this cover from SRV is that he doesn't f*** up Jimi's song! He plays it like Jimi and doesn't try to put his own twist on already amazing s***!
When you consider that music is cultural and localized, you realize that, each in their own way, there are hundreds of thousands of such diamonds around the world who pour every ounce of strength, heart and soul into their art - and we haven't heard of most of them. It's amazing.

Oh, Stevie, our beloved. He is missed every day. Stevie had some cord of divinity running through him that manifested through his guitar. A conduit. His version of "Little Wing" is my absolute favorite song in the world. And that is saying quite a lot for me.
I second this recommend - he plays it right after he lets his soul go free in maybe the best slow blues ever recorded in the very same "Texas Flood" El Mocambo show - after that now legendary blistering jaw dropping song, he does "Lenny" and it caps off a set of sets. Seeing this on VHS in 1995 changed my life, those 2 tracks specifically stand out in my memory. I already loved SRV and had devoted my guitar hero status to him just off of hearing and becoming addicted to "The Sky is Crying" posthumous release - a first edition SRV Strat was my HS grad present in 1994 - but I still had no idea - no you tube in 1995 - ha, we had to work hard to get access to live shows still - my neighbor one door over had a catalog of bootleg concert recordings and some legit ones which El Mocambo was - but I remember watching and it was so incredible you felt drained - then he came with Texas Flood and my jaw dropped as I truly could not believe what I had just seen. Then with dumb look on my face and mouth open, he plays "Lenny" - so cool - the cigarette - so gloriously beautiful, and it sealed the deal forever. It is a perfect come down from the prior song, but filled with such inner soul and delicate precision - ah screw all the talk, it is amazing listen to this man!

I love listening to Stevie play, I love the sounds he demands and begs and teases out of his guitar, but I also love how into it he is. He was living his best life each and every time he had a guitar in his hands, you can tell it's a part of him, an extension of his arms, hands and heart. I have seen no one I enjoy more. My brother introduced me to him, and he is someone I didn't get to see in concert, I wish I had. He is wonderful with Albert King.

He actually replaced his frets with bass frets so that they could handle the strings. One time, he played the callous right off of his finger and he super glued it back on to finish the set. He was a monster, in the best possible sense of the word.
Very few guitarists have the otherworldly gift of walking on stage and closing their minds to their surroundings and let the music take over without being consiously aware of what they are playing

No one should ever be that good, Stevie truly was a guitar god. My socks were blown off. First song I ever heard from him way way back in the day was Cold Shot and I was hooked.

We all have our favorites - as a guitar player for what it is worth - Stevie was the GREATEST. He was the Magic Man. He did things we'll never see again and is really the last holder of the title of Guitar God till we lost him in 1990. Jimi, Jimmy Page, Clapton, Santana, BB King, Robert Johnson, Eddie Van Halen, David Gilmour and so many more are up in the highest echelon - but only really Jimi and Stevie reside together above all. If you watch the "SRV - Voodoo Child - Live form Austin City Limits" you'll see how he plays even his own incredible cover so much differently, but as good or better than this treasure here. But I'd go check out a cool groovy Stevie, showing off more of his skills and just beautiful sounding soul blues music with a rock edge, "Mary Had a Little Lamb" live from Austin or "Crossfire" from that same show would be great directions to head to but they are endless. Welcome my friend - that battered 62 Strat he has he called "Number 1" and it - at least to blues guitar players - may be the most valuable object on the Earth. It sits as it should with older brother Jimmy now in his 70's but still playing. If you want to see a random but so so super cool rarely reacted to clip, check out Stevie and Jimmy playing "Pipeline Live" together. It has a really cool trick to it so is a blast to see but also sounds incredible and is touching showing off the brothers together.
SRV, Hendrix and Jeff Beck ( if you haven't checked Beck out you'll dig him 2) are not human. They all come from a planet where they do nothing but okay guitar. Rock on.
Pipeline is bittersweet, an amazing display of their ability and bond and at the same time the loss for Jimmie when Stevie died.
My also being (a not so good) guitar player noticed that most of Stevie's licks were not difficult, but it was the way he played them that really made the difference. I've tried to learn a few of the more difficult licks, utter failure.
There are very few guitar players that make me want to put my guitar in the closet, from being embarrassed. Stevie Ray Vaughn is one and Doyle Dykes is the other. Check him out on "Free Bird", mind blowing. ;-)

Wow! One of the best guitarist ever. I love the way the video is a mirror image of his original performance. Makes him look like he's playing lefthanded like Jimi. He was a master at the craft and I feel fortunate to have seen him in concert way back in 87.

I was blessed to have gotten to see him play live, which blew everyone away. The audience was full of guitarists with binoculars just studying his hands. He was one of the greatest guitarists of all time even though his career was cut so short.
He was a great!!!! He sadly died way too soon...he had stopped drugs and booze and he showed the world you could still do this...there was only one Stevie...can you imagine what his music would be today?!?...I have been listening to him for years.. he was the best..

You are right Stevie was a badass guitar player and just to let you know this performance was at Charlie Daniel's benefit with Lynyrd Skynyrd also performing. So Charlie's band and Skynyrds band were on the side of the stage checking out this performance. A awesome experience had by all I'm sure. A great concert to ck. Out is SRV live at Datona Beach. The whole show was incredible.
SRV, greatest by far ! On and off stage he was a good human ! He fought hard to break in to mainstream because he wasn't a cookie cutter . His guitar skills have never been matched.

Every time I watch SRV play a solo like this I find myself falling into a sort of hypnotic state of disbelief. Then when I snap out of it I always ask the same question over and over and over............ can a guitar be played with any more talent, soul and passion than that! TY for reacting.
I noticed that people who are just now hearing SRV for the first time comment on how the audience is just laid back and appear to be bored...I guarantee you we were not bored, we were mesmerized watching him play. Not only that but the sound levels he liked to play at made your body rumble...you could FEEL it.

Oh, Stevie, our beloved. He is missed every day. Stevie had some cord of divinity running through him that manifested through his guitar. A conduit. His version of "Little Wing" is my absolute favorite song in the world. And that is saying quite a lot for me.

I second this recommend - he plays it right after he lets his soul go free in maybe the best slow blues ever recorded in the very same "Texas Flood" El Mocambo show - after that now legendary blistering jaw dropping song, he does "Lenny" and it caps off a set of sets. Seeing this on VHS in 1995 changed my life, those 2 tracks specifically stand out in my memory. I already loved SRV and had devoted my guitar hero status to him just off of hearing and becoming addicted to "The Sky is Crying" posthumous release - a first edition SRV Strat was my HS grad present in 1994 - but I still had no idea - no you tube in 1995 - ha, we had to work hard to get access to live shows still - my neighbor one door over had a catalog of bootleg concert recordings and some legit ones which El Mocambo was - but I remember watching and it was so incredible you felt drained - then he came with Texas Flood and my jaw dropped as I truly could not believe what I had just seen. Then with dumb look on my face and mouth open, he plays "Lenny" - so cool - the cigarette - so gloriously beautiful, and it sealed the deal forever. It is a perfect come down from the prior song, but filled with such inner soul and delicate precision - ah screw all the talk, it is amazing listen to this man!
Just about anything from El Mocambo is a win for a react video. The string break seals it for most people.

Just in case you are interested, there are two more incredible live versions of Voodoo Chile by Stevie which are are really worth watching as well, one from the El Mocambo in 1983, and another from Austin Texas 1989. They will blow you away. Mary had a little lamb from Austin Texas is also amazing, as is Tightrope. Crossfire Live at Night Music is unreal. Couldn't stand the weather live is blistering too. Stevie was one of the greatest to ever pick up a guitar, no doubt.
The 89 version is great but far from the best not sure why everyone recommends it. This one, cotton club, Tokyo and even rockpalast are better
I seen both Stevie Ray and Hendrix live in concert and heard both do Voodoo Child. Both amazing, both taken from us far too soon. I am not sure about who I liked better but Stevie used the heaviest guage strings on his box which does resonate at a deeper level at least to me. Huge talents. Huge

I love listening to Stevie play, I love the sounds he demands and begs and teases out of his guitar, but I also love how into it he is. He was living his best life each and every time he had a guitar in his hands, you can tell it's a part of him, an extension of his arms, hands and heart. I have seen no one I enjoy more. My brother introduced me to him, and he is someone I didn't get to see in concert, I wish I had.
