I remember when people were getting on Jay-Z when he dropped Kingdom Come because the subject matter was different than his previous albums. I noticed that fans don't ever want change, despite changes happening in their own lives. If you aren't the same person you were 5 years ago, how can you expect your favorite artists to be?
Its the audience who want the negativity. Record labels just sell what people want. Then again I did hear the theory of how record labels are in cahoots with private prison system to brainwash generations of peoples to be incarcerated.
I will forever geek out about nerdy sh*t. You will hear me nerd out in my lyrics, my Instrumentals, the production process, the engineering process an I love It all. I’m In my 40s and I can care less about fitting In with these kids. I appreciate their passion but I’m on some other waves. 🏄🏽♂️ ✌🏼
I absolutely agree because I was a part of the Young Thug, Chief Keef and future wave so I totally understand it but eventually that shit gets old so when my homey is trying to throw Tory Lanez and a bunch of Detroit artists at me, I can’t take it serious because I’ve grown up, and I would gravitate more towards action Bronson Earl sweatshirt and Boldy James on some grown man rap type shit even if it’s about preaching positivity and getting your shit together like Larry June
I totally agree with Wayno, BUT, in all fairness, when industry guys like him are approached with artists that have more mature subject matter, they should take more chances on them. I feel like all of these guys are acting like young cats because they’re seeing the young shit make money & push them into stardom. They claim to look for fresh new different talent, but always end up signing the same thing we’re already hearing & seeing.
I've always gravitated toward self-conscious artists specifically Nas or Kendrick because I am self-conscious too. Although I didn't walk in their shoes, the messages they provide can be therapeutic and help you mature because of how real and honest their message is.
Proof Jay Z is the reason we are in this place now. Less love for the conversation on NAS. Look at the Jay Z 52+ likes. Yet he is the reason why 40 year old men like Jay Z are still talking about coca.
I couldn't wait for this conversation, bro. I wanna give my take on this. I feel like once hip-hop went Commercial, it ushered in an age limit, where the media pushed this narrative of Rap being a young person's game . You know those sayings. that if you're 25yr or older your not marketable to the masses. Which is false. And in my opinion it Led to those who could have helped the hip-hop community grow up were forced out of the game. That's why most of the older rappers that's still in the game they were there before the BS started. But you don't see this in other genres of music, people still love the same artist they loved as a child. I can go on and on, but I feel like on the growing up subject, That's one big part of it. 💯
That’s a fact, country does a better job at this. The younger guys like Kane Brown and Morgan Wallen are charting at the same time as the guys in their 40s like Chris Stapleton. I wish Hiphop would adjust like that and let all age groups play their part.
Also, it seems like rap music is the only genre that people throws your age around like it's a bad thing. I hear people say all the time, "I don't wanna hear no 35 year old rapper" But Taylor Swift for example can sing til she is 60, no problem. It's weird....
That's because rappers are supposed to die young to be street legends. Pac and Big are immortalized cause they died before they was 27. Fans subconsciously want that for their fave rappers cause they won't get old and fall off. They're disposable action figures to them.
@@Ds1GsK it's turned me off the genre completely tbh. People I like are putting out nice tracks and on dope features, but I can't be bothered to get excited about any of it. The overall climate of the culture is just too poisonous to its artists and fans.
You can’t look maturity in immaturity. Support the artist in your age group instead of looking down to the younger artist. Our artist weren’t always talking about mature subjects. Hip hop has to let the art form evolve and support our legends like rock. Hip hop has always pushed older acts to the side once there run has died down
He has a point. As a fan of music, I love it when artist can change during the times of their life, such as Adele, Jpegmafia, and NF they each do an amazing job on that.
Change is a natural part of life I feel this comes down to caring to much about what other people think. Music should always be a creative outlet to express where a person is in life if your truly passionate about what you do your not worried about how it comes off to others! Keep making music that’s true to you and the right people will gravitate towards it.
Let’s be honest, the people that listen to Wu Tang, 50 cent, Nas,etc. Are grown adults with careers where they can afford tickets. I Went to the Drake concert and barely seen little kids there because affordability. Idk the price of Lil Baby tickets but if your fan base is younger kids that can’t afford their own ticket, then you might just have to reconsider ticket prices. 50 cent matured but he’s still performing songs from his youth. So I doubt song substance is the problem, the people that grew up listening to 50 cent can actually afford those tickets assuming their in their 30s
I think that people forget that it is not the artist fault entirly, a lot of times it's the contract. They get paid to dumb down the music for a very dark purpose. I just thought I would throw that out there because people seem to forget or maybe have never known this Sinister fact. It's called agenda guys.😮 and no I'm not taking up for the artist just stating facts. I mean if we're going to be real about it, then let's be real about it and talk about all of the details/facts😱 not just one small fraction of of them.🤴🏾
Hip-Hop isn't as business oriented as other genras like pop. We just started getting money in this scene like 30 years ago. These other genres have been gettin it for way longer. They sell their music strictly by its relations to other organizations. We sell our music by its message. So we have artists making characters like other genres but the difference is we can't sell commercial. We tried with the McDonald's partnerships, and shoe deals, but all in all we don't have the commercial backing like other genres do. You can make whatever music you want to if you place yourself with the right people
Specific rap artists such as De La Soul and Masta Ace have matured as their ages have advanced. Ace, in particular, had song topics that tapped into what he was/is going through in his life...or he made concept albums that had a continuous story thread throughout the LP. Artists like these are admittedly far and between. I've lost interest in the majority of rappers I listened to in the past due to them never growing or maturing as artists.
Me as a lyrical hip hop head in this current climate, it’s actually been refreshing because I’m not at the mercy of mainstream radio. Diggin in the crates has become far more easier in the digital age than it ever was. And I’m in the Midwest so I don’t have to wait for the music to move from NYC and get it 3-6months later like it was in the 90s. You just gotta tap into different sources and trust me there is still good hip hop out there.
How many times have we heard Hip Hop is a young man's game? Once I heard that I knew there was no respect for the older generation. When DJ Ak said it people hated on him for saying it.

My favorite artist is Eminem. I am mad with Em, because he didn't grow up with me. I had issues with both my parents and when I was 15-16 I loved the wacky f the system f my parents stuff. Now that I'm 36 I don't want to hear the childish stuff anymore. I find myself leaning more towards Jay-Z now because when he does release music it is a lot more content rich.
